Disposing of your used product
In the European Union
EU-wide legislation as implemented in each Member State requires that used electrical and
electronic products carrying the mark (left) must be disposed of separately from normal household
waste.

of names in this section, refer to Names and Functions of Parts in this document.
Safety precautions
Follow the instructions in this documentfor the safe use of the NEC Express server and console drawer.
This User’s Guide describes hazardous parts of the server and console drawer,possible hazards, and how to avoid
them. Components with possible danger are indicated with a warning label placed on or around them.
In User’s Guide or on warning labels,W ARNING or CAUTION is used to indicate a degree ofdanger. These terms
are defined as follows:

Safety notes
This section provides notes on using this console drawer safely. Read this section carefully to ensure properand
safe use of this console drawer.For symbols, refer to Safety precautions.
General
WARNING
Do not use the console drawer for services w here critical high availabilitym ay directly affect human
lives or high reliability is required.
The console draw er is not intended to be used f or control facilities or devices concerning human lives,
including medical devices, nuclear f acilities and devices, aeronautics and space devices, transportation
facilities and devices; and facilities and devices requiring high reliability. We assume no liability f or any
accident resulting in personal injury, death, or property damage if the console draw er has been used in the
above conditions.
Do not use the console drawer if any sm oke, odor, or noise is present.
If smoke, odor, or noise is present, immediately turn off the console draw er and disconnect the power plug
fromthe outlet, then contact your sales representative.
Using the console draw er in such conditions may cause a f ire.
Do not insert needles orm etal objects.
Do not insert needles or metal objects into ventilation holes in the console draw er or openings in the optical
disk drive. Doing so may cause an electric shock.
CAUTION
Keep w ater or foreign matter away from the console drawer.
Do not drop a pin, paper clip, w ater, alcohol and other foreign materials or liquid into the console draw er.
Failure to follow this w arning may cause an electric shock, a fire, and other failures of the console draw er. If
such things accidentally enter the console draw er, immediately turn off the pow er and disconnect the power
plug fromthe outlet. Do not disassemble the console draw er, and contact your sales representative.
Do not break or damage the LCD.
If the LCD is damaged and the liquid inside enters the mouth, gargle immediately. If the liquid adheres to
skin or enters the eye, w ash w ith running water for at least 15 minutes and consult a doctor. LCD contains
irritative substance.

Rack installation
WARNING
Use the console drawer only under the specified environment.
Do not install the server rack in any environment that is not suitable for installation.
Installation in an unsuitable environment is harmful f or the console draw er and other systems installed in
the rack and may cause fire or personal injury due to the rack f alling. For a detailed explanation on
installation environments or seismic reinforcement, consult w ith the instruction manual supplied w ith the
rack or your maintenance service company.
Use a rack that conforms to the designated standard.
The console draw er can be mounted onto a rack for the Express server that conf orms to EIA standards.
Do not mount the console draw er onto any rack that does not conformto EIA standards. Doing so may
cause a device malfunction, personal injury, or damage to peripheral devices. For more information about
rac ks that can be used w ith the console draw er, consult w ith your maintenance service company.

CAUTION
Am bie nt temperature
The operating temperature of the rack ambient is greater than room ambient. Therefore, the console
draw er and other optional devices must be installed in an environment compatible w ith the max imum
ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer.
Air Flow
Make air flow required for safe operation of the console draw er and other units.
Loading of rack
Mount the console draw er and other units onto the rack evenly. If the w eight of units is shifted to the right,
the left, or the upper of the rack, the possibility of rack falling is increased.
Circuit overloading
Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that
overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply w iring. Appropriate
consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used w hen addressing this concern.
Reliable earthing
Maintain the reliable earthing of mounted units.
Do not atte mpt to carry or install the device alone.
More than tw o people are required to carry or install the rack. Otherw ise, the rack may fall, resulting in
personal injury or damage to peripheral devices. In particular, tall racks such as a 44U rack become
unstable unless steadied w ith a stabilizer. Make sure that tw o or more people hold the rack to carry or
install the rack.
Do not install w ith the load weight distributed unevenly.
To avoid unevenly distributing the load of the rack and device, install a stabilizer or connect multiple racks
to distribute the w eight. Otherw ise, the rack may fall, resulting in personal injury.
Do not install components alone, and check the door hinge pins of the rack.
At least tw o people are required to install a rack door, rail, and other rack components. When installing
the door, make sure that both upper and low er hinge pins are held in place. Incomplete attachment may
cause components to fall off as w ell as personal injury.
Do not pull out the console drawer from a rack that is not stable.
When pulling out the console draw er fromthe rack, make sure that the rack is stabilized (by using
stabilizers or quake-proof fixtures). Otherw ise, the rack may fall, resulting in personal injury.
Do not pull out more than one device from the rack.
Pulling out multiple devices fromthe rack may cause the rack to f all, resulting in personal injury. Pull out
only one device at one time.
Do not exceed the rated capacity of the power supply w hen connecting devices.
To prevent burn injuries, fire, and damage to the console draw er, make sure the load on the branch circuit
that supplies pow er to the rack w ill not exceed the rated load.
Do not get your fingers caughtin the rails.
When mounting/removing the console draw er onto/fromthe rack, be caref ul to avoid getting your f ingers
caught in the rails or cutting your f ingers on the rails.
Do not apply any weight on the console drawer whenit is pulled out from the rack.
Do not apply f orce on the console draw er when it is pulled out from the rack. Doing so causes the f rames
to bend, w hich makes it impossible to be mounted on the rack. It may also cause the console draw er to
fall, resulting in personal injury.

Power supply and power cord use
WARNING
Do not hold the power plugwitha wethand.
Do not disconnect/connect the plug w hile your hands are w et. Failure to f ollow this w arning may cause an
electric shock.
Do not connect the ground wire to a gas pipe.
Never connect the ground w ire to a gas pipe. Failure to follow this w arning may cause a gas explosion.
CAUTION
Plug in to a proper power source.
Use a grounded outlet w ith the specified voltage. Use of an outlet w ith a voltage other than that specified
causes f ire and electrical leakage. Do not install the console draw er in any environment that requires an
extension cord. Connecting to a cord that does not conformto the pow er supply specs of the console
draw er causes overheating, resulting in fire.
Do not connect many cords intoa single outlet by using extensioncords.
The electric current exceeding the rated f low overheats the outlet, w hich may cause a fire.
Secure the power pluginto the outlet.
Insert the plug of pow er cords into the outlet completely. Arc tracking may be caused by inserting the plug
halfw ay and the possibility of fire is increased.
Do not use any unauthorizedpower cord.
Use only the interf ace cables provided w ith the device. Electric current that exceeds the amount allow ed
could cause fire.
Also, observe the follow ing precautions to prevent electrical shock or fire caused by a damaged pow er
cord.

applying extra pressure to the connector may damage the cable part, w hich may cause a fire or electric

Installation, relocation, storage, and connection
CAUTION
Do not install the console drawer in other than the specified place.
Do not install the console draw er in the follow ing places or any place other than specified in this User's
Guide.
Failure to follow this instruction may cause a fire.

A humid place such as near a boiler
･
A place exposed to direct sunlight
･An unstable place
Do not use the console drawer in an environment w here corrosive gas is present.
Do not install the console draw er in a place subject to corrosive gases including sulfur dioxide, hydrogen
sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, chlorine, ammonia, or ozone. Do not install the console draw er in an
environment that contains dust, chemicals that accelerate corrosion such as NaCl or sulfur, or conductive
materials. Failure to follow this w arning may cause the w iring on the printed w iring board to short-circuit,
leading to fire. If you have any questions, contact your sales representative.
Do not connect or disconnect anyinterface cable with the powercordof the console drawer
pluggedto a pow er source.
Be sure to pow er off the console draw er and unplug the pow er cord froma pow er outlet before
installing/removing any optional internal device or connecting/disconnecting any interf ace cable to/f rom
the console draw er. If the console draw er is of f -pow ered but its pow er cord is plugged to a pow er source,
touching an internal component, cable, or connector may cause an electric shock or a fire resulted froma
short circuit.
Use only the specified interface cable.
Use only interf ace cables provided by NEC and locate a proper device and connector before connecting a
cable. Using an unauthorized cable or connecting a cable to an improper destination may cause a short
circuit, resulting in a f ire.
Also, observe the follow ing notes on using and connecting an interf ace cable.

Cleaning and working with internal devices
WARNING
Do not disassemble, repair, or alter the console drawer.
Never attempt to disassemble, repair, or alter the console draw er on any occasion except as described in
this document. Failure to f ollow this w arning may cause not only malf unction of the console draw er but
also an electric shock or f ire.
Disconnect the power plugbefore cleaningthe console drawer.
Be to pow er off the console draw er and disconnect the pow er plug froma pow er outlet before cleaning or
installing/removing internal optional devices. Touching any internal device of the console draw er with its
pow er cord connected to a pow er source may cause an electric shock even of the console draw er is of f-
pow ered.
Occasionally disconnect the pow er plug fromthe outlet and clean the plug w ith a dry cloth. Heat w ill be
generated if condensation is formed on a dusty plug, w hich may cause a fire.
CAUTION
Secure cables or cards in place.
Be sure to secure the pow er cord, interf ace cables, and cards in place. Incomplete installation causes a
loose connection, resulting in smoke or f ire.
During operation
CAUTION
Do not use without lockingthe slide rails.
When using the console, pull out the console until the slide rails are locked.
When storing the console, close the LCD first and unlock the slide rails, then store the console into the
rac k.
Avoid contact with the console drawer duringthunderstorms.
Do not touch any part of the device including the cables w hen a thunderstormis approaching.
Also, do not connect or disconnect any devices. There may be a risk of electric shock f romlightning
strike.
Keep anim als away from the console drawer.
Keep animals such as pets aw ay fromthe console draw er. Pet hair or other w aste enters the console
draw er, which may cause a fire or electric shock.
Do not leave the console beingpulled out.
Bumping the console may cause personal injury.
Do not remove the console drawer from the rack while it is running.
Do not pull out or remove the console draw er f romthe rack w hile the console draw er is running. In
addition to causing equipment to not function properly, separating the console draw er fromthe rack may
result in personal injury.
Do not place any unnecessary object on top of the console drawer.
Keep unnecessary object (e.g., cup or glass of drink) aw ay fromthe console draw er. Doing so may cause
an electric shock or a fire if such a liquid enters the console draw er.
