Introduction
With UPnP architecture and wireless local area network (WLAN)
you can create a home network of compatible devices. The
network may consist of your Nokia N93i, a PC, a printer, and a
sound system or a TV.
You can use your Nokia N93i as a remote control, easily catalog
music, pictures and video on your PC, create custom music
playlists, photo albums and movie collections. You can also
transfer compatible media files to your Nokia N93i and back up
files from your Nokia N93i to your PC.
Using the wireless LAN function of the Nokia N93i in a home
network requires a working wireless LAN home connection
setup. The other target home devices must also be UPnP enabled
and connected to the same home network.
To create a WLAN connection, you can use WLAN wizard,
connection manager, or Connection in Settings depending on
the type of your connection. This guide explains how to create
the connection with WLAN wizard.
Using this guide
To get started with home network,
1Create an access point. See "WLAN wizard", on page 2.
2Set up home network. See "Set up home network", on page 3.
3Start using home network. See "View and listen to media
files", on page 4and "Copy media files", on page 5.
Some places, like France, have restrictions on the use of wireless
LAN. Check with your local authorities for more information.
Features that use wireless LAN or allow such features to run in the
background while using other features, increase the demand on
battery power and reduce the battery life.

WLAN wizard
The WLAN wizard helps you to connect to a wireless LAN and
manage your wireless LAN connections.
The WLAN wizard shows the status of
your wireless LAN connections in the
active standby mode under calendar
entries.
Tip! The necessary setting for
WLAN configuration are provided by your WLAN service
provider, or determined by your network configuration. If
your WLAN settings are incomplete or incorrect contact
your service provider.
WLAN connection
Scan for a connection
1To scan for available WLAN connections when the status is
WLAN scanning off, scroll to the WLAN status line in the
active standby view, and press to start scanning for
WLAN connections. If several connections are available,
WLAN networks found is displayed.
2Press , and select Search for WLAN to show the
connections.
Select the connection
1Scroll to the desired connection and press .
2Depending on the type of the network you select, continue
as follows:
•For a nonsecure network, access point is created and the
browser bookmarks view opens. Continue with "Set up
home network", on page 3.
•For a secure, but not hidden network indicated with ,
security passwords are required. Continue with "Secure
network", on page 3.
•For hidden networks, continue with "Hidden network", on
page 3.
Important: Always enable one of the available encryption
methods to increase the security of your wireless LAN
connection. Using encryption reduces the risk of
unauthorized access to your data.

Secure network
Enter WEP or WPA/WPA2 key. The WEP
and WPA/WPA2 functions can be used
only if the network supports them. The
browser bookmarks view opens.
Continue with "Set up home network",
on page 3.
Hidden network
1Enter the network name (SSID).
2For a secure network, select the
encryption used in WLAN security
mode:Open network, WEP, or
WPA/WPA2. If you select Open
network, no encryption is used. The
WEP and WPA functions can be used
only if the network supports them.
3Enter the security key. The same
settings must be entered on the
wireless LAN access point device.
4Continue with "Set up home network", on page 3.
Tip! To make access point changes, such as changing the
security key later, press , and select Tools > Settings >
Connection > Access points.
Set up home network
To set up home network, do the following:
1Press , and select Connect. > Home net. When you access
the home network application for the first time, the setup
wizard opens, and helps you to define the home network
settings for your Nokia N93i.
Tip! To use the setup wizard later, select Options >
Run wizard in the home network main view.
2Enter a name for your Nokia N93i. The name is shown to the
other compatible devices in the home network.
3Select the access point that was
defined with WLAN wizard. For
more information, see "WLAN
wizard", on page 2. You can also
select Always ask if you want the
device to ask for the home access
point every time you connect to
the home network or Create new
to create a new access point.

4Select whether to share content
like images, videos and music. If
you set Content sharing on, the
other UPnP compatible devices in
the home network can view and
copy your files you have selected
for sharing in the Images & video
and Music folders of your Nokia
N93i. Even if Content sharing is
off in your Nokia N93i, you can
still view and copy the media files
stored in another home network
device if it is allowed by the other device.
The options related to Home net. are not available in Gallery
before the Home net. settings have been configured.
To connect a compatible PC to the home network, on the PC, you
must install the home media server software from the DVD-ROM
supplied with Nokia N93i or available on www.nokia-asia.com/
N93i/support.

View and listen to media files
You can share media files saved in Gallery with other compatible
UPnP devices using the home network. You can also use the
home network to view, play, copy, or print compatible media
files from Gallery. To manage your home network settings, press
, and select Connect. > Home net..
Your device is connected to the home network only if you accept
a connection request from another device, or in Gallery, select
the option to view, play, print, or copy media files on your Nokia
N93i or search for other devices in the home network folder.
Show stored media files in your Nokia N93i
To select images, videos, and sound clips stored in your Nokia
N93i and show them in another home network device, such as a
compatible TV, do the following:
1In Gallery, select an image, a
video clip, or a sound clip.
2Select Options > Show via
home net.
3Select a compatible device in
which the media file is shown.
The images are shown both in
the other home network device
and your Nokia N93i, and the
video clips and sound clips are
played only in the other device.
Show stored media files in the other device
To select media files that are stored on another home network
device and show them in your Nokia N93i (or in a compatible TV,
for example), do the following:

1In Gallery, select Home network. Your Nokia N93i starts the
search of other compatible devices. Device names start to
appear on the display.
2Select a device from the list.
3Select the type of media you want to view from the other
device. The available file types depend on the features of the
other device.
4Select the image, video clip, or music clip you want to view,
and select Options > Show via home net. (images and
video) or Play via home network (music).
5Select the device in which the file is shown.
6To stop sharing the media file, select Back.
To print images saved in Gallery through Home net. with a UPnP
compatible printer, select the print option in Gallery. See ‘‘Image
print’’ in the user guide. Content sharing does not have to be
switched on.
To search files with different criteria, select Options > Find.
Play audio files
To select audio files that are stored on another home network
device and play them in a compatible device using your Nokia
N93i as a remote control, do the following:
1In Gallery, select Home network. Your Nokia N93i starts the
search of other compatible devices. Device names start to
appear on the display.
2Select a device from the list.
3Select an audio file from the other device. To select several
audio files, mark them first (Options > Mark/Unmark >
Mark) one by one.
4Select the audio file. After a short pause, a set of devices is
shown.
5Select the device in which the file is played.
6To stop playing, select Back from your Nokia N93i.
Copy media files
To copy or transfer media files from
your Nokia N93i to another
compatible device, such as a UPnP
compatible PC, select a file in
Gallery and Options > Move and
copy > Copy to home network or
Move to home network. Content
sharing does not have to be
switched on.
To copy or transfer files from the
other device to your Nokia N93i,
select a file in the other device and
Options > Copy to phone mem. or Copy to memory card (the
name of the memory card if a compatible miniSD card is inserted
in the device). Content sharing does not have to be switched on.

Important security information
When you configure your wireless LAN home network, enable an
encryption method, first on your access point device, then on the
other devices you intend to connect to your home network. Refer
to the documentation of the devices. Keep any passcodes secret
and in a safe place separate from the devices.
To view or change the settings of the wireless LAN internet
access point in your Nokia N93i, see ‘‘Access points’’ in user
guide.
If you use the ad hoc operating mode to create a home network
with a compatible device, enable one of the encryption methods
in WLAN security mode when you configure the internet access
point. This step reduces the risk of an unwanted party joining the
ad hoc network.
Your device notifies you if another device attempts to connect
to it and the home network. Do not accept connection requests
from an unknown device.
If you use wireless LAN in a network that does not have
encryption, switch off sharing Nokia N93i files with other
devices, or do not share any private media files. To change
sharing settings, see ‘‘Home network settings’’ in the user guide.
Troubleshooting
Q: I cannot see my compatible PC from my device over the home
network. What’s wrong?
A: If you are using a firewall application in your compatible PC,
check that it allows home media server to use the
connection. (You can add it to firewall application’s
exceptions list.) Check that the firewall application allows
traffic to ports 1900, 49152, 49153 and 49154.
Check that an in-build firewall of WLAN access points does
not block the traffic from the ports 1900, 49152, 49153 and
49154.
Check that you have the same WLAN settings in your Nokia
N93i and in compatible PC.
Q: My connection stopped working. What can I do?
A: Disable WLAN from your compatible PC and Nokia N93i and
enable it again. If this does not help, restart your compatible
PC and phone. If you still have a problem reconfigure WLAN
settings to compatible PC and Nokia N93i.
