Installation & Upgrade Overview
Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software Upgrade and Installation overview
You use the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 CD-ROM, Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Upgrade Boot diskette,and
Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Security Key Code Installation diskette to:
• upgrade an existing Norstar Voice Mail system to release 4.1
or
• add Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 to a Norstar Applications Module II (NAM II) or Norstar
Applications Module (NAM) that is running other software, such as Norstar IVR applications.
Figure 1 provides an overview of the steps required to add Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 to a NAM running
other applications. For complete instructions, refer to the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software Add-on
Installation Guide, included with Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software Add-on Package.
Figure 2 provides an overview of the steps required to upgrade an existing Norstar Voice Mail system
to release 4.1. For complete instructions, refer to the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software Upgrade Guide,
include with Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software Upgrade package.

Preparation
Loading Release 4.1
Completion
Shut down the NAM
Attach the CD-ROM drive to NAM.
Power up CD-ROM drive & insert CD-ROM diskS
Install the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software
Back up the NAM capabilities file.
Enable the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Security Key Code
Back up the NAM Capabilities file after the upgrade
Installation procedure completed
Test Norstar Voice Mail
•Verify NVM Feature Codes (Feature 9*1)
•Verify the NVM Directory Number (DN)
Initialize the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software

Loading Release 4.1
Completion
Shut down Norstar Voice Mail
Attach the CD-ROM drive to Norstar applications server.
Power up CD-ROM drive & insert CD-ROM disk
Transfer the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 files to
the Norstar applications server
Back up NVM programming and the Norstar
applications server capabilities file.
Enable the Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Security Key Code.
This step must be completed before you load the
Norstar Voice Mail 4.1 Software.
Check the Norstar Voice Mail software version.
Back up NVM Programming after the upgrade
Reset Norstar Voice Mail (if required)
Upgrade procedure completed
Test Norstar Voice Mail
•Verify NVM software version (Feature 983)
•Verify NVM Feature Codes (Feature 9*1)
•Verify the NVM Directory Number (DN)
Re-initialize Norstar Voice Mail (if required)
Update Cintech Dial-by-Name (if required)
Check the size of the Norstar application server hard disk drive.
If you have a 270 MB hard disk drive, it must be replaced before
the upgrade can be performed.
