3. Tools:
Fretsaw: for all curves and shapes where other types of saw are not suitable.
Note:
Insert blades with teeth facing forward, use a fretsaw board.
PUK saw: Use a PUK saw for all small pieces and dowel
Modelling knife: Modelling knife for foam
Note: danger do not cut towards yourself- use a steel ruler as a straightedge and
guide. Take care not to cut yourself!!!
Sanding block: use glasspaper and block on flat smooth surfaces .

5. Planning overview

Trace off the parts of the fuelage (1) motor mount (2) and boom tube holder, (3) on to the plywood sheet (See
page 7)
Cut them out with a fretsaw ( Fine blade) and sand to finish with glasspaper
This stage must be done carefully as the flight characteristics will depend on the quality of your craftsman-
ship!!!
Glue the motor and holder and boom of the fuselage together and leave to dry (see page 9)
Saw the two wing carriers (4 / 5 x 5 x 23mm) to length
Glue the two carriers, in the fuselage at right angles. The best way to do this is to lay the carriers on a flat sur-
face (building board) and then ensure that the fuselage is upright (90degrees) Finally glue te wing supports (
5 / 3mm dia x 150mm ) on the carrier, see sketch (front view) and the plan (Side view and plan view on page
9)
To ensure clarity the wings are not shown.
5.2 Producing and constructing the tail fin (TF) and tailplane (TP)
Trace the outline of the tail fin (TF 6) from the pattern ( page 7) on to the hard foam sheet 3 x 210 x 300mm.
The tailplane ( TP / 7) must also be traced on to the hardfoam sheet 3 x 210 x 300 and cut out

Use a block and glasspaper to sand and shape the edges of the tail fin and tailplane (With the exception of
the edges where the T fin and T plane will be glued in place)
To do this lay the parts on a table top and only sand the appropriate parts
Glue the tail fin, at 90 degrees, in the middle of the tailplane , in flight direction (Use a set square to check for
a right angle ) Use PVA white glue and hold in place with pins until dry
Finally glue the tailplane/ fin together on to the fuselage tube so that it stands 50mm over the end (See page
9)
5.3 Finishing the fuselage
Mount the fuselage tube boom (8) on to the nose part and adjust it so that the tailplane are is parallel
The tube must be set at an angle of 2 degrees as shown in the plans. This is very important and will effect the
flight characteristics. Without this 2 degree angle between the bottom of the wings and the tailplane there will
not be enough lift
( See the side view on page 9)
5.4 Assembling the wings
Take the hard foam sheets 3x 250x500mm and cut them in half ( 3 x 125 x 500mm )
Lay the under part of the wings flat on the building board )9)
Then place the wood strip (10) upright along the wing 43 mm from the front edge (See daiagram 1V)
Take the second sheet and cut a 2mm line along as shown in diagram 1V with a sharp knife
NOTE: DO NOT CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE WING –ONLY SCORE IT 2MM!
Finally bend it carefully over the wood strip on the under wing so that it “ Knicks”to shape
Glue the wood strip in place on the lower wing, and before its dry, glue the top of the wing in place and hold in
place with pins
Once dry sand the front edge ( leading) to 90 degrees and glue the nose strip(11) along the front of the wing.
Leave to dry and then round off
Carry out the same procedure with the second wing .

Joining the wings together
Before joining the two wings together the ends ( Root) they must be sanded to angle of 7 degrees using a block
and glass paper. To do this make a pattern using a piece of scrap plywood as shown in diagram V
Place a strip of sellotape ( Ca.15cm long) under one end (root) so that one half protrudes.
Lay the wing on a polythene covered board and then offer up the second wing half, pressing it down on the pro-
truding sellotape. Now both halves should be flat on the building board , with no visible gap between them
Ask your Craft Teacher to check this stage for you this part must be carried out very carefully before gluing in po-
sition
Apply glue to one wing half (at the root) and weigh it down. Lift up the other wing
Half to a height of 120mm and support it at this height. Remove any excess glue and check that one wing lays
absolutely flat. Hold everything in place until the wings are absolutely dry.
IMPORTANT!
This procedure will only make the wings stable enough to work on – if you place them straight on your model
and try to fly it they will not last long at all!!!!!!!
The next stage is to place a glued bandage over the joint as reinforcement
Apply the glue thinly and make sure that is a neat joint
This is how you can do it
Apply a bead of glue to the joint and spread in out with your fore finger until its 2,5cn wide
Place the bandage over the glue and press it in place. Use your forefinger again to make the bandage is well
glued in place- leave to dry
Remove the sellotape and carry out the same procedure on the underneath of the wing
Finally glue the wing tips (13) in place (see page 3 / 1)

5.5 Finishing the model
Painting the model
To keep the weight as light as possible we suggest using as little decoration as possible. For colour use a water
based ( No solvent ) felt tip pen. Especially the wings should be kept light
Cut out and colour the wasp logos glue one on each wing half

Installing the motor, wiring and batteries
Solder the cables (16) on the poles of the motor (15) and then to the switch and poles of the re-chargeable Solder
the cable (16) on to the motor connection (15) and the wires on the switch (17) as shown in the plan and connect
it to the battery pack. The battery pack ( Order separately article no.208530) is secured with a single layer of
sellotape or with a hot glue gun. The pre- wired switch is fixed with an all purpose glue. Once the propeller has
been added (18) the Wasp model is ready to fly.
The battery pack is loaded via a transformer (Article 208338). Loading time at 300mA is about 30minutes. To load
simply connect the transformer to the battery pack. Please read the instructions supplied with the transformer.
Balancing and trimming
Hold the wings with your finger tips on the end on a flat surface, let them go and note which way they fall, which
wing is heaviest. Place a small piece of lead or nail in the lightest wing end
The Centre of Gravity lies 43mm from the front of the leading edge. Hold the model under the wing tips at the C
of G and see how it balances. It is correct when it dips slightly down at the nose. To arrange this, adjust the posi-
tion of the batteries. The balancing must be carried out carefully as it will determine the pattern of the flights.
First flight
Fly only on a calm day or with little wind
Make sure that the wings are securely held on the rubber bands
Launch the model into the wind, with the nose slightly down , with a gentle push
If it glides smoothly and lands gently you can then try a powered flight
If on launch the model goes up steeply and then dives it is either tail heavy or has not be launched with the nose
light down. If its the former , the batteries must be place further forward
Try until a smooth flight path is achieved
If the model dives on launch, then it is probably nose heavy, here the batteries must be adjusted to the rear
When flying the model should fly in large circles, to change this adjust the tail fin in the direction you require (do
this carefully as not to snap it)
Motorised flight:
Check the wind direction ( Throw some loose grass cuttings high in the air )
Switch motor on and launch model carefully into the wind
Should the model fly out of sight- there is an address label which you can glue to the side (See page 7)!
