fabricated and shipped from our factory under stringent quality control. In order to maintain its design
performance throughout the life of your meter, this manual offers the operator the necessary installation,
operation and maintenance information.

1. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1.1 Confirming the Specifications
（1）Once the flowmeter is received, inspect its appearance and confirm that it is not damaged during
transit.
（2）Product code and specifications are indicated in the nameplate of the flowmeter. Make sure that
information on the nameplate conforms to your particular specifications.
（3）This section describes the handling precautions. Read this section thoroughly. If at any time in the
future you seek our assistance, contact the nearest sales office in your area.
When you inquire, specify the product name, model number, serial number,
ratings/specifications and other information.
CAUTION:
1.2 Transit Considerations
（1）It is desirable that the meter be transported to the installation site in the shipping container used for
transit from the factory.
（2）During transportation, exercise care to avoid impact shock and rainwater.
1.3 Storage Considerations
If the flowmeter is to be stored over an extended period of time before installation, it could be involved
in unexpected happenings. So if an extended period of storage is anticipated, the following precautions
should be taken:
（1）The meter can best be stored in the shipping container used for transit from the factory.
（2）The place of storage should meet the following requirements:
・Free from rain and water
・Free from vibration and impact shocks
・With least temperature and humidity variation (around 25℃ and 65% R.H.)
（3）A meter that has once been placed in service for any length of time should be washed clean to
remove residue metered material completely from its inner walls before storage. Waterproofing the
wiring entrance should also be taken into consideration.
Unauthorized modification will invalidate the specifications.

2. OPERATING CONDITIONS
To maintain the stated high accuracy and long service life of the flowmeter, make sure that the operating
flow rate, pressure, temperature, etc., are held within the ratings specified. These ratings are stated in
the meter converter nameplate and "GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS" in this instruction manual.
Read them carefully before you place the meter in service.

3. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The OVAL VORTEX FLOWMETER is a vortex flowmeter with thermistor sensors, designed for gas
measurement.
Downstream of the bluff body, von Karman vortices form and shed alternately proportional to the rate of
flow on either side of that triangular body placed perpendicular to the stream of flow. The thermistor sensors
detect the frequency of these vortices as temperature change (resistance change) and measures the flow
rate.
3.1 Features
（1）The absence of mechanical moving parts and components subject to abrasion ensures long life and
continuous operation with no loss of accuracy with time.
（2）By measuring actual flowrate, the measurement is insensitive to changes in temperature, pressure
and other physical properties.
（3）Provides pulse output proportional to the flowrate to simplify totalization.
（4）Small pressure loss saves energy.
（5）Replaceable sensor facilitates maintenance and servicing without the need of interrupting the gas
flow.
（6）Converter separated from the sensor body may be located anywhere for maximum ease of
maintenance irrespective of piping conditions.

4. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
As a stream of fluid runs through the pipe, von Karman's vortices form and shed proportionally to the
flowrate downstream of the bluff body located perpendicular to the stream of flow. Thermistor sensors in
the sensor housing pick up these Karman vortices.
Part of the metered fluid is introduced through the bypass inlet upstream of the bluff body into the
sensor housing. This bypass flow is divided into two parts downstream of the filter, then passes a pair of
thermistor sensors and returns to the main pipe section through the outlets on both sides downstream
of the bluff body.
A pair of thermistor sensors forms two arms of a bridge circuit and are heated by weak electric current
supplied from a regulated current source.
As the fluid flows, alternating pressure changes induced by Karman vortices on either sides of the bluff
body cause alternating changes in the outflow velocity synchronous with Karman vortices in the bypass
current flowing across the sensor area and a minute temperature change results on the surface of
thermistor sensors.
Thus the resistance values of a pair of sensors change alternately and the resultant alternating current
synchronous with Karman vortices is picked up from the bridge. This signal is amplified and shaped to
obtain a pulse output proportional to the flowrate.

5. CONSTRUCTION (Component Names and Functions)
（1）Sensor
①Meter body assembly
It consists of a measuring pipe and a bluff body. As the metered fluid runs, Karman vortices form
and shed downstream of the bluff body.
②Sensor assembly
The assembly contains sensors to detect Karman vortices. It consists of a sensor housing,
thermistor sensors, and sensor signal detecting circuit. By closing the block valves in the sensor
housing, the operator can inspect or service the assembly without interrupting the flow in the line.
（2）Converter (PA21)
The converter transforms the signal from the sensor into flow rate output (pulse signal of the same unit as
the meter factor). Install the converter on a 2" steel pipe post, using U-bolts in a location easy to access with
desirable environment.

In this flowmeter, the converter is built flameproof and increasing safety explosionproof construction
(terminal box on the sensor assembly).
The sensor is built flameproof and intrinsically safe explosionproof construction.

6. PIPING INSTRUCTIONS
6.1 Standard Piping Conditions
It is generally required that the flow pattern of a material moving into an inferential type meter be as
uniform as possible for accurate metering. Accordingly, proper flow straightening measures must be
taken when installing the OVAL VORTEX FLOWMETER. In applications where OVAL straightening devices
(flow straightener, Honey vane, and downstream pipe) are used, a straight pipe section is not required
unless otherwise specied. However, if using only the straight pipe section without other flow straightening
devices, secure the length of a straight pipe conforming to the ISO standards given the table below:

（3）Space Saving Arrangement
If required straight pipe length is not available upstream of the vortex flowmeter due to existing
restrictions on installation location, the OVAL Honey Vane S combined with a short pipe may be used for
space saving.

Connecting bolts, nuts, and gaskets for the pipe
must be prepared by the customer.
For JPI flange connection, use the bolts and nuts
with unified screw threads. If you wish to use
metric screw threads, contact OVAL.

6.2 Pipes to be Used
Upstream and downstream pipes adjacent to the flowmeter should be of the same internal
diameter (ID) as the flowmeter. (The exclusive flow straightener, Honey Vane L, and downstream
short pipe have the same ID as the flowmeter.) The table below shows the standard ID of the
flowmeter. Confirm the delivery specification in case ID is non-standard.

6.3 Pressure Gage and Thermometer Taps
If pressure or temperature detection is necessary, provide the probes downstream of the flowmeter (see the
below figure). To avoid disturbances in the flow, temperature detection should be made downstream of the
flowmeter and, at the same time, upstream of the control valve.

6.4 Meter Orientation
The flowmeter may be installed either on a horizontal line or a vertical line.
In a horizontal line, the sensor should not be installed upside down.
