2. OPERATING CONDITIONS
To maintain the stated high accuracy and long
service life of the meter, make sure that the operating
owrate, pressure, temperature, etc., are held within
the ratings specified. These ratings are stated on
the meter preamplier nameplate (tag). Read them
carefully before you place the meter in service.
1. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1.1 Confirming the Specifications
(1) When received, the meter should be thoroughly inspected for indication of rough handling during transit.
(2) Product code number and ratings are stated on the meter nameplate. Make sure that the ratings shown
conform to your particular specications.
1.2 Transit Considerations
(1) It is desirable that the meter be transported to the installation site in the shipping container used for transit
from the factory.
(2) During transportation, exercise care to avoid impact shock and rainwater.
1.3 Storage Considerations
(1) The meter can best be stored in the shipping container used for transit from the factory.
(2) The place of storage should meet the following requirements:
- Free from rain and water
- Free from vibration and impact shocks
- With least temperature and humidity variation (around 25°C and 65% R.H.)
(3) A meter that has once been place in service for any length of time should be washed clean to remove
residue metered material completely from its inner walls before storage. Waterproong the cable entrance
should also be taken into considerations.
CAUTION: Unauthorized modification will invalidate the specifications.

3. GENERAL
Battery-powered, the EX DELTAⅡis designed to serve as a designated local monitor at the point of
measurement and nds extensive use in a wide range of applications with many benets inherent in the vortex
owmeter. It requires no external power source.
The display shows the total ow and instantaneous owrate at the touch of an external switch.
Also available is a separately mounted type which permits centralized monitoring of multiple displays from
widely spread sensors in the eld - some may be 200 meters away.
Depending on the way the probe is installed in the main pipe, two types are available: xed and hottap.
Features
(1) A broad ow range with high metering accuracy.
(2) Accepts gas, liquid and steam.
(3) The probe has neither mechanically moving parts nor components subject to wear. Completely isolated
from the process uid the sensor is compatible with dust and mist. All these contribute to long life.
(4) The hottap type is suitable for installation in critical lines where the process ow must be maintained -
without interruption during maintenance and inspection. It also reduces initial cost by eliminating the need
for a bypass line.
(5) Battery powered, the preamplier requires no external power installation (ve 3.6 volt lithium batteries are
used). The battery pack is good for 7 years on a 24 hour continuous operation (with integrally mounted
preamplier) or 4 years (with separately mounted preamplier).
(6) Can monitor total ow (accumulated total, resettable total) and instantaneous owrate on the digital display.
(7) Constructed waterproof (IP65) and intrinsically safe (Exial II CT4) ideal as a designated local monitor.
(8) A model with separately mounted preamplifier enables the operator to monitor multiple sensors in a
remotely located central monitor station.
Transmission length: 200 meters max.
4. COMPONENT NAMES AND FUNCTIONS
4.1 Component Parts
Refer to Figs. 4.1 and 4.2 on the next page.
(1) Meter Body (probe):
Consists of a measuring pipe and a vortex shedding body bluff body). As the metered material ows, von
Karman vortices form and shed behind the bluff body.
(2) Sensor (vortex sensing element):
Has a built-in piezoelectric sensor. All wetted parts are made of stainless steel for maximum life expectancy.
(3) Adapter (shaft assembly):
Connects the meter body with the preamplier. To be installed on the pipeline with a ange. Also serves to
protect the sensor and dissipate heat.
(4) Preamplier:
Transforms changes in electric charges generated from the sensor into an output signal representing the
owrate. Consists of interface, amplier, output, and display boards.
Physical orientation of the preamplier is adjustable in steps of 90 deg. around the adapter axis (see Sec. 6.10
on page 18). The display is also adjustable in steps of 90 deg. within the preamplier housing.

4.2 Totalizer Display Function and Operation
In normal operation, the display shows four different modes of reading, namely the accumulated total ow,
hourly instantaneous owrate, per-minute instantaneous owrate, and resettable total ow, plus a low-battery
indicator.
4.2.1 Operation with Mode Select Switch External to Preamplifier
(1) Display Menu Selection
The display scrolls through available readings each time the mode switch is pressed as shown in Fig. 4.4.
NOTE: "About the Displayed Messages during
Operation" appears in Paragraph 4.2.4 on
the next page.
NOTE: 1. While the display shows the instantaneous
owrate, the incoming owrate signal is
constantly accumulated in the internal
CPU.
2. Mode select switch is disabled in the
parameter setup mode.
3. Display mode changes on release of
the mode select switch depressed.
(2) How to Reset the Resettable Total
Holding the display mode select switch
depressed for 5 seconds resets the resettable
total ow reading to zero.
NOTE: The reading is resettable only when a
resettable total ow appears.
4.2.2 Operation with "Mode" and "Reset"

4.2.3 About Measurement Units on the LCD
By modifying the setting of parameter "Un," any of the following measurement units can be indicated. See the
topic "CPU Parameter Setup" on page 26. (This function changes only the measurement unit indicated below
the LCD display. It by no means affects the process of actual measurement.

4.2.4 About the Displayed Messages during Operation
(2) Prolonged operation
Held turned ON without turning "OFF" immediately
by removing the ngers.
⇒Bars begin to disappear from the leftmost one.
Indicates a countdown before "prolonged
depression" processing takes place.
⇒Holding turned ON until the last bar disappears
results in "prolonged depression" processing (*)
to take place.
(Turning OFF before the last bar disappears
results in the same behavior as in (1) to take

* Prolonged operation:
An operation required for Normal mode ⇔
Parameter review mode selection, nalizing the
parameter setting, etc.
NOTE: While RESET switch is in a valid mode (resettable total mode, etc.), the same message as stated
above appears in response to RESET switch operation. (There is no distinction between ordinary
depression and prolonged depression.)
4.3 Low-Battery Alarm
The internal battery pack is good for about seven
years in continuous operation (4 years for preamplier
separated type). As the battery runs out to nearly its
life, a low-battery indicator " " begins to blink.
(The storage life of the battery is rated as 10 years
approx. However, it should be replaced with a new
one 10 years after the date of manufacture.)
With a blinking " " warning, the battery still
remains serviceable for about a week, but an early
battery replacement is suggested. The dedicated
battery pack is available at your nearest service
station or at our service division.
E v e n i f t h e b a t t e r y p o w e r h a s t o t a l l y b e e n
consumed, the parameters to congure the CPU are
retained; just by replacing it with a new battery, you
can continue meter operation.

5. PIPING INSTRUCTIONS
For general considerations to be observed, see JIS Z 8766, "Flowrate Measurement Methods with Vortex
Flowmeters".
5.1 Standard Piping Conditions
NOTE: A downstream straight pipe 5D or longer is required.
It is generally required that the ow pattern of the uid ows through an inferential type meter be as uniform
as possible for precise metering. Accordingly, proper ow straightening measures must be taken when the
application engineer considers installation of a DELTA Flowmeter. In applications where OVAL straightening
devices (ow straightener, honey vane, and downstream pipe) are used, a straight pipe section is not required
unless otherwise specied. But if you plan to solve the ow pattern problem with a straight pipe section alone,
secure the length of a straight pipe conforming to the ISO standards given in Table 5.1 below:

(3) Space Saving Arrangement
If required straight pipe space is not obtainable upstream of the vortex owmeter due to existing restrictions
on installation location, the OVAL Honey Vane S combined with a short pipe may be used to solve the space
problem.

5.4 Pulsation
Compressors, Roots blowers and other Pulsation pressure generating sources could adversely affect meter
performance. Minimize pulsating pressures by referring to the following formula:

V : Minimum velocity (m/s)
If pulsation pressure is excessive, the following measures should be taken into consideration:
(1) Locate the source of pulsation downstream of the meter or locate it as far from the meter as possible.
(2) Provide a pulsation attenuator, such as a chamber or pulsation snapper.
(3) Shut off valves upstream and downstream of the meter when fluid flow is interrupted (as a precaution
against erratic signal generation at zero ow).
5.2 Pipes to be Used
Pipes having the inside diameter specied at the time you placed an order for this meter should be used for
upstream and downstream pipes. Otherwise, consult the factory for compatibility.

5.5 Prevention of Cavitation (liquid service)
To prevent cavitation, line pressure should be maintained above the level calculated by the following formula:

5.6 Prevention of Excessive Flowrate
To ensure long meter life, transient owrates should
be held below 1.6 times the meter's maximum
rating. Shown below are typical examples in
steam measurement where excessive flow is often
encountered:
In cases where the flowrate exceeds the
maximum of meter rating momentarily.
In steam measurement, when P1>P2, quickly opening
the valve will result in a uid ow at a rate depending
on the line resistance (mainly valve port position in
"A" or meter resistance in "B"). The resultant rate
of incoming ow is the sum of downstream pipeline
volume and consumption, but if pressure differential
across the valve is great, the uid velocity will easily
reach the sonic speed, momentarily well in excess of meter's maximum rating. (Such phenomenon is often
experienced at system startup or in batch operation.)
5.7 Prevention of Slug Flow
This meter can measure both gases and liquids, but slug ows (where gases exist in the process liquid) will
produce a loss of metering accuracy.
5.8 Keep the Pipe Filled with Process Fluid
When making a liquid measurement, ensure that the piping remains full of the process liquid. Installation in
locations where it is difcult to keep the piping lled with the process liquid, or where bubbles tend to collect
should be avoided.
5.9 Bypass Line

For maintenance and servicing purposes, it is a good
practice to provide a bypass line. Valves upstream
and downstream of the meter should be of a design
which will not disturb uid ow pattern, such as ball
valves (full bore type), in this arrangement (see Fig.
5.4).
For general considerations to be observed, refer to
JIS Z 8766, "Flowrate Measurement Methods with
Vortex Shedding Flowmeters".

6. INSTALLATION
6.1 Installation Location
Select a location with ambient temperatures -20 to +60°C. Installation in such locations as described below
should be avoided:
(1) hardly accessible for maintenance and servicing
(2) temperature change and/or vibration is excessive
(3) possible immersion in water
(4) corrosive atmosphere
(5) unt for the meter's explosionproof construction
6.2 Physical Orientation
This meter may be installed either on a horizontal or vertical run. Avoid, however, such physical orientation as:

(2) Rainwater may enter from cable entry (if installed

6.3 Installation Procedure, Fixed Type
Install the meter body in the following manner:

6.3.2 Installation Procedure
Install the meter in the following manner:
(1) The meter probe body is provided with blind
caps. Be sure to remove them before you install.
(2) Determine the location by the flow direction
arrow mark and the center mark (V-groove) on
the shaft assembly (102).
(3) Be sure to install the gasket.
CAUTION:
1. Do not forget to install the gasket in
place and tighten bolts.
2. A leak test should be conducted before
commencing operation.

By turning in or out handwheel, the probe of this flowmeter goes down or up and, without the need of
interrupting the line, it can be drawn out. When the meter is placed in service for measurement, the hold-down
disc is so positioned as to come in contact with the retaining ring (the guide is at match mark "A" on the stud).
During maintenance or inspection, allow the probe to be housed completely in the short pipe (the guide is at
match mark "B" on the stud) and remove the meter from above the gate valve.
When removing or installing it, exercise care to minimize the possibility of unexpected trouble by observing the
following instructions:
(1) Install the hold-down disc in the right physical orientation.
(2) As the probe passes through the opening in the gate valve, make sure that the gate valve is in its fully
opened position when the probe is inserted, and that the probe is hoisted completely above the gate valve
when the gate valve is closed before attempting to remove or install.
(3) Be aware of the internal pressure when you remove the owmeter. (Allow the pressure to escape through
the vent valve before attempting to remove the meter.)
(4) Directions of handwheel rotation
Clockwise rotation (viewed from top) →Probe descends.
Counterclockwise rotation (viewed from top) →Probe ascends.
Installation Instructions
(1) Install the hold-down disc between the mounting
nozzle (mounting ange) and gate valve.
- Use extra care to install the hold-down disc
in the right physical orientation at this time.
Ensure that the arrow mark on the side of
hold-down disc conforms to the actual ow
direction and that the arrow mark is on the left
hand side as viewed from the ow direction
(upstream side).
- Install a gasket on top and bottom of the
hold-down disc.
(2) Install the meter.
- Remove protective caps provided on the
sides.
- Ensure that the arrow mark on the cover
conforms to the ow direction.
- Ensure that the flanges of short pipe, gate
valve and hold-down disc are in line with the

periphery and the center mark (V-groove).
(3) With the gate valve fully open, insert the probe until the retaining ring comes into contact with the hold-down
disc by turning the handwheel. The guide should be at the match mark (V-groove) on the stud at this time.
- Ensure that the vent valve is fully closed and that the tting bolts are tight.
- In the event a leak persists through the gland packing, retighten the bolts holding the packing retainer.
Removal Procedure
(1) Disconnect wiring of the preamplier.
(2) By turning the handwheel, retract the probe.
Retract it until the guide arrives at match mark "B" on the stud.
(3) Conrming that the probe has been retracted completely, fully shut off the gate valve.
(4) Taking precautions against internal pressure, carefully open the vent valve, allowing the internal pressure to
escape.
(5) Remove the owmeter form above the gate valve.

6.4.3 Preamplifier Orientation
As viewed from the direction of ow (upstream side),
the preamplier typically installed inclined to the left.
The mode select switch points downward.
6.5 Lagging Work
If heat insulation is considered for the piping,
simplied lagging (without mortar nish) is suggested
for the area where the meter is installed to facilitate
disassembly and inspection. Such consideration
will simplify meter connecting bolt removal without
the need of breaking the coat of lagging material at
servicing.
6.6 Ambient Temperature
Given in Fig. 6.9 is the allowable process fluid
temperature relative to the ambient temperature.
Ensure that the ambient temperature is held within
the rating (125℃).
If there is a possibility that the ambient temperature
exceeds the allowable limit, the following measures
should be taken into consideration.
- Avoid exposure to the direct rays of the sun.
- Separate from the piping and equipment of
elevated temperatures or provide a heat shield.
- Thermally insulate the preamplifier (in a low
temperature environment).
6.7 Partially Filled Pipe
When making measurement of a liquid, make sure the piping remains full of uid and contains no trapped air or
gases. In applications where the existing piping conditions potentially cause a partially lled pipeline, a purge
valve should be provided.
6.8 Working Stage and Hoist (in case of the hottap type)
To facilitate inspection and maintenance Hottap Type DELTA Flowmeter, we recommend that a working stage
and a hoisting device are provided.

6.9 Hottap Type Drive Unit Removal
The drive unit (retractable assembly including the handwheel and screw axis) can be separated. It is benecial
in applications where line vibration is great, or where a single drive unit is shared by multiple owmeters.
Drive unit removal procedure
(1) Installing the shaft tting bolts [Fig. A]
Secure the adapter A to the cover with shaft tting bolts and hex nuts A. (This prevents the shaft from being
forced upward under line pressure.)
(2) Separating the shaft from its connection [Fig. B]
Taking off two hex nuts, turn the handwheel to extract the connecting studs from the adapter A.
(3) Removing the drive unit [Fig. C]
Taking off three hex bolts, remove the drive unit. Exercise care not to bump against the preamplier or other
components.
Drive unit installation is the reverse of the removal instructions.

6.10 How to Change Preamplifier
Orientation
The preamplifier can be oriented to the desired
direction in 90° steps as shown in Fig. 6.11.
NOTE: To change the orientation, hex key (JIS
B 4648), nominal size 4, is required. The
preamplier can be rotated by loosening
its four hex socket head screws, but be
sure to disconnect sensor leads before
attempting to rotate it.
CAUTION: Turning the preamplifier
with sensor leads in place
may damage the sensor.
Procedure
Refer to Section 14, "EXPLODED VIEW AND PARTS
LIST" on pages 37 and 38.
(1) Turn off power on the display board (see Fig. 6.17
on page 19).
(2) Remove the terminal box cover (Fig. 6.12).
(3) Separate the shield strip (Fig. 6.13).
(4) Disconnect sensor leads from the terminal block.
(5) Loosen a total of four hex socket head screws
securing the preamplier's neck (Fig. 6.14).
(6) Turn the preamplifier to the desired direction,
exercising care not to force the sensor leads.
(7) When the preamplifier orientation has been
established, assemble in the reverse order of
removal.

Windowed Cover
The display (totalizer) can be rotated to any desired
direction in 90° steps through 360°. By changing
the orientation of display board (internal assembly),
you can adjust the totalizer display to appear for
maximum readability in a vertical line, too.
How to Change Display Angle
Refer to Sec. 14, "EXPLODED VIEW AND PARTS
LIST, FIXED TYPE" on pages 37 and 38.
(1) Remove the windowed cover (Fig. 6.16).
(2) Turn off the "POWER" (SW1-4) switch on the
display board (Fig. 6.17).
(3) Take off four screws holding the display board
(Fig. 6.18).
NOTE: The procedure above applies to the
separately mounted type preamplier.
(4) Separate the display board from the preamplier
body (Fig. 6.18).
(5) Orient the display board to the desired angle
and secure the display board with four screws
(adjustable in 90° steps).
CAUTION: Never make a mistake in
coupling the connector
with the right receptacle.
(6) Turn on the "POWER" (SW1-4) switch on the
display board.
(7) Install the windowed cover in place.
CAUTION: Screw in the cover as far
as it will go to ensure
tight installation.

6.12 Separate-Mount Preamplifier Installation
(1) The maximum transmission length from the probe is 200 meters; install the preamplier within this length.
(2) The preamplifier requires installation on a horizontal or vertical steel pipe 2 inches in diameter with
furnished U-bolt.
(3) Select an installation location easy for maintenance and in a desirable environment.
CAUTION
Locations that comes under any of the following conditions should be avoided:
(1) Difficult for inspection and maintenance.
(2) Temperature change and/or vibration is excessive.
(3) Possible immersion in water.
