About This Document (HL-C1-WL Series)
This document (HL-C1-WL Series) describes modifications, additions and deletions
to the HL-C1 Series. Read the USER’S MANUAL for the HL-C1 Series to check the
descriptions in this document.
Precautions for the Handling Class 3B Laser
Beam
1. IEC
A semiconductor laser is used as the light source of the sensor.
The laser class is based on IEC Standards (IEC60825-1).
Cautions
1)Be careful not to look directly at the laser beam or at its reflection from a mirror
surface.
2)Mount the sensor at a height above or lower than eye level so the beam will
not shine directly into eyes during operation.
The safety distance (Nominal Optical Harm Distance: NOHD) is approximately
1.8m, but make sure the laser beam hits a diffusing reflector or an absorbing
body.
3)This machine is not equipped with a mechanism for stopping laser emission
automatically upon disassembly of the sensor; contact us in the case of failure.
You may be exposed to laser emission if the machine is disassembled for re-
pairs or the like.
4)Do not operate according to methods not described in this USER’S MANUAL.
Caution – You may be exposed to hazardous laser radiation if the device is
controlled or adjusted in procedures not specified in this manual.
5)Carefully read the description given on the following warning label.
The warning label is affixed to the side of the sensor. A warning label in Eng-
lish is included in the package; use it when required.

Safety Equipment
1)Key Switch
This product uses a key switch to emit a laser. Remove the key when the
product is not used.
2)Beam attenuator
If there is danger of incision by the laser beam into eyes during work, install the
accessory beam attenuator.
3)Remote Interlock Terminal
Open across the IL1 and (-) terminals (COM terminals for NPN output type or
photo MOS output type) in the case of a single sensor head, or open across
the IL1 and IL2 terminals and (-) terminal (COM terminals for NPN output type
or photo MOS output type) to stop emitting the laser beam.
To install the beam attenuator,
fix it with the accessory screw
so that the projector face is
covered.
When the beam attenuator is
not used, fix it on either side of
the sensor head with the ac-
cessory screw.

4)Laser Emission Indicator
The green LED of the sensor head lights up for about five seconds before the laser is
emitted. It is possible to recognize the LED through the laser protective eyewear.
Summary of IEC 60825-1
Safety measures to be taken by the user according to the class of the laser product are

2. FDA
Export to US
To export the laser product to the US installed on equipment, it is restricted by
the regulation of the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In case this product is used as a FDA conformity product, be sure to change
the warning label to the English version label and affix the Certifi-
cate/identification label, which are enclosed in the package of this product.
The FDA establishes the standard below to prevent problems to the user pre-
viously due to laser product.
PART1040 (PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR LIGHT-EMITTING PRODUCTS)
– Execution standard for laser beam emitting product –
This standard classifies the laser product based on the level of laser danger
and stipulates preventive safety measures to be executed for each class (21
CER 1040.10 and 1040.11).
Furthermore, the guidance of Laser Products-Conformance with IEC 60825-1,
2007 and IEC 60601-2-22; Final Guidance for Industry and FDA (Laser No-
tice No. 50) are applied to this product.
The classification of equipment type is as follows:

Conditions for Compliance with EMC Directives

To meet requirements of EMC directives of the EU, connect ferrite cores
(ZCAT3035-1330 made by THK Co., Ltd.) to the cables connected to the terminal
block, as shown below.

1)Laser Emission Indicator (green)
The indicator lights up during emission and for about five seconds before the laser
beam is emitted from the sensor head 1 or sensor head 2.
2)BRIGHT Indicator (red)
The indicator lights up when sensor head 1 or sensor head 2 cannot make a
measurement due to excessive light.
3)DARK Indicator (red)
The indicator lights up when sensor head 1 or sensor head 2 cannot make a
measurement due to insufficient light.
4)Not used.
This port is for adjustment at the factory before shipping.
5)COM. Port
Use for RS-232C communication with a PC.
6)Compact Console Connector
Connect a special cable for connecting the compact console, to display the measurement
or enter various settings on the compact console.
7)Not used.
This port is for adjustment at the factory before shipping.
8)Sensor Head 1 Connector
The controller recognizes the sensor head connected to this connector as sensor
head 1.
9)Sensor Head 2 Connector
The controller recognizes the sensor head connected to this connector as sensor
head 2.
To use only one sensor head with the controller, connect it to sensor head 1 side 8).
10)Power Supply Terminal
Supplies 24V DC.
11)External Output Terminal
12)External Input Terminal
13)DIN Rail Mounting Hook
The hook allows quick installation on a 35mm width DIN rail.
14)Key Switch
Turn the key switch on to turn the controller on. Remove the key when the controller
is not used.

2-2 Mutual Interference Area
If more than one sensor head is mounted close together, no mutual interference will occur
if the neighboring sensor's laser spot is outside the shaded area in the figure below.
Mount other sensor heads so laser spots do not enter the shaded area.
When two sensor heads are connected to a single controller, the mutual interference
prevention function can be used to avoid a mutual interference.
