Before installing this dog door please
read the following step-by-step instructions
carefully. Please note that this product
is not designed to fit into glass.
Tools required
•Pencil

•Jig or Keyhole Saw
•Drill
•Screwdriver
•Tape measure
•Sand paper
Measurement and marking
Measure the belly height of your dog. (Fig. 1).
Mark this measurement and draw a straight horizontal line measuring
291mm (111/2”) (Fig. 2). Ensure line height is sufficient to avoid weakening
the base of the door.
Please bear in mind that this line will eventually be the bottom of the hole
you will cut in your door and that the frame of the dog door will be slightly
lower. If necessary, this line may have to be raised slightly to account for this.

Cutting a hole for your dog door
a) In Wood and PVC/uPVC/Metal
The dog door requires a square cut-out of 429mm x 291mm (167/8” x 111/2”). (Fig. 3).
Not to scale - for best results you should refer
to the enclosed cutting template.

b) In Walls
Follow the instructions for “Wood and PVC/uPVC/Metal”, by using the
enclosed cutting template. Please note that additional tools, materials and
competent DIY skills may be required.
FOR SAFETY REASONS IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO FIT THIS
PRODUCT IN GLASS.
Fitting the dog door
Your Staywell dog door is fitted with the 4 way locks and security
barrier on the inside of your house.
Before fitting you should remove the security barrier and unlock the pet
door. To do this, push fit the 4 way locking turning handles into position
making sure they are both in the same position. (Fig. 4). Turn the handles
whilst pushing the barrier as indicated. This will allow the security barrier to
be removed. (Fig. 5).
Temporarily place the dog door in the hole and mark screw hole positions
which can be found under the u-shape on the dog door. (Fig.6).
Remove the dog door and drill the holes with a 4.5mm (3/16”) drill bit. (Fig.7).
From the inside of the house, position inside frame. Insert screws through
the drilled holes. If the screws are too long they may need to be cut down
to match the depth of your door. Using over long screws may damage the
pet door. The screws should be removed from the cat flap before cutting.
File down to ensure there are no sharp edges.
Position the outside frame onto the outside of the house and insert the
hexagonal nuts, through the holes provided, as far as they will go until they
‘lock’ in the hexagonal housing.
Once locked in position tighten the bolts, a little at a time, until both frames
lie flush with the door. Make sure that the dog door is vertical (Fig.8).
Your Staywell dog door is now ready to use.

Using the 4 way locking system
Two 4 way locks allow you to control your dog’s access in and out of
your home.
It is a good idea not to use the 4 way lock until your dog is thoroughly
familar with using the door. Your dog may become confused as to why
you have installed it.

Using the barrier locking system
The locking barrier is designed to provide extra security when you are
away from home with your dog. It is not designed to be used for day to
day control of your dog. Press down barrier to release locks. (Fig. 9 & Fig. 10).

Powering the Infra-red dog door
Remove the top cover by pushing firmly on the paw prints
and by pushing upwards. (Fig.11).
Place 4 x AA 1.5V Alkaline Long Life batteries in position (Fig.12).
After you have powered the dog door it emits a low tone bleep indicating
the dog door is ready for programming. In addition to the bleep the red LED
will flash. Replace top cover.

Batteries should be replaced every 3-6 months. Do not use
rechargeable batteries. To increase battery life, place the dog door
in manual mode when not in use (see ‘manual operation’) and fit the
optional locking barrier.
Powering the Infra-red key
Open the collar key by twisting a coin between the two flanges (Fig.13).
Remove battery holder (Fig.14).
Place 1 x CR2 long life battery into the battery holder. The collar key LED
will flash 3 times indicating that the key is active (Fig.15).
Replace battery holder into the collar key, clipping the 2 halves togehter
and ensuring the green PCB board is visible through the clear base.
(Fig.16).
The key will continue to flash at 2 minute intervals. (Fig.17).

Battery should be replaced every 3-6 months or when the LED
stops flashing.

Programming the Infra-red dog door
After powering the dog door and the collar key, approach the flap with the
key. The red LED will stop flashing and the door will emit a high pitched
bleep. (Fig. 18).
Your dog door is now programmed to recognise the collar key and the
locking bolts will be activated everytime you approach the dog door with
the collar key. The bolts will not relock until the collar key is out of range of
the dog door.
If you have more than one dog, you will need to purchase collar keys of
the same colour code.
The colour codes available are: Black, Red, Brown and White. Extra
keys can be purchased from the Staywell website -
www.staywell.co.uk
If your dog loses a collar key, you must
purchase a replacement of the same
colour. If you purchase a different
colour, you must reprogramme the dog
door with that new colour.
To reprogramme the dog door,
disconnect the batteries for
approximately three minutes and follow
the steps outlined on the previous
page and as above.
Attaching the Infra-red collar key
The key must be attached to the collar so that it hangs forwards (Fig.19).
Manual operation
Please note, this feature CANNOT be used until the dog door has
been fully powered and programmed. If you do not wish to use the
locking bolts the dog door can be placed in manual mode.
Press the manual button once (Fig. 20). and
the bolts will unlock and the LED flashes. The
dog door is now in manual mode.
To place the dog door back in automatic mode
press the manual button. The bolts will relock
and the LED flashes. The dog door is now
back in automatic mode.

Setting the re-latch time
Please note, this feature CANNOT be used until the dog door has
been fully powered and programmed.
The re-latch time is the length of time that it takes for the bolts to lock after
they have been activated and the key has been removed from range. The
bolts on your dog door have been factory set to re-latch after 2 seconds.
The time can be set between 2 and 20 seconds. The period that you set
the re-latch time will depend on your own dog and your personal preference.
Remove the top cover by pushing firmly on the paw prints and
by pushing upwards. Press the manual button once. (Fig. 21).
The LED will flash and the bolts will unlock. The dog door is effectively in
manual mode. Press the timer button within 2 seconds (Fig. 22). Each
press of the timer button will increase the re-latch time by one second. Each
time the button is pressed the dog door will emit a high pitched bleep.
Once the time out reaches 20 seconds the timer reverts to 2 seconds, emits
a low tone bleep and the cycle starts again.
Once the desired amount of seconds has been selected, wait 2 seconds
for the dog door to return to manual mode (there is nothing to indicate this
as the bolts will remain open). Press the manual button again to return to
automatic mode (Fig. 21). The LED will flash and the bolts will re-lock. The
selected re-latch time is in use.
To extend or reduce the selected re-latch time, simply repeat the steps
above. For example: If a re-latch time of 5 seconds has been selected,
the first high pitched bleep changes the setting to 6 seconds, the second
high pitched bleep to 7 seconds and so on.

Low battery power
Dog door
When the batteries are starting to run low the dog door will warn you by
emitting a bleep every 2 minutes. The LED will flash continually.
Remove the top cover by
pushing firmly on the paw
prints and by pushing
upwards.
Remove the old batteries and insert 4 x new
1.5V Alkaline long life batteries. (Fig. 23).
Your dog door will need reprogramming.
Follow instructions for “Programming the
Infra-red dog door”.
Collar key
As the power in the collar key battery runs low you will notice a loss of
range as your dog approaches the door. Eventually the battery power
will become so low that the dog door will not open and the LED will stop
flashing. To restore power, replace the battery in the collar key and refer to
”Powering the Infra-red key”.
Mains power adaptor (optional)
A mains power transformer kit can be purchased from the Staywell website
- www.staywell.co.uk. Instructions are provided explaining how to install.
Once installed, place the jack plug into the socket at the bottom of the dog
door (Fig. 24). Plug adaptor into a household electric socket
(Fig. 25).
Batteries can be left installed as a back-up power supply. If you are
powering the dog door with the mains power adaptor, and there have
been no batteries installed, you will need to program your dog door. Follow
instructions for “Programming the Infra-red dog door”.
Cat collar key
If you wish to use your dog door for both cat and dog, we supply a black
collar key for your cat, which will operate the dog door. Your dog must use
a black dog collar key. Please contact Staywell Customer Care for advice.

Training your dog to use the dog door
Most dogs will learn to use the dog door almost at once but there are a
few who may be a little nervous at first. The following tips will help your pet
to take full advantage of the outdoor freedom and indoor comfort - which
you want for your dog – and which your new dog door provides.
The most important rule is to be patient with your dog. Don’t be in a hurry.
Let your dog work out for itself that it can go in and out of doors. Don’t
force it through the flap or it may become frightened.
Many dog owners install dog doors when they move house. If this applies
to you, make sure that your dog is familiar with his or her surroundings before
you fit the dog door. Take it on supervised trips outdoors on a leash and make
sure it also feels secure and comfortable in its new indoor environment.
Once you have installed your dog door, leave the flap open for some time.
You can do this by using a long strip of masking tape; open the flap and
use the tape to keep it held open by fixing the other end of the tape to the
surface above. Make sure that the fixing is secure so that the flap can not
fall down accidentally. Let your dog become familiar with it and go in and
out freely. Establish a motive for your dog to use the door.
Dogs can be trained to use the pet door in a matter of hours. Dogs
respond to encouragement, repetition and especially play, so why not use
the door as part of a game? E.g. throwing a ball through the pet door. Pat
and congratulate the dog when the pet door is used appropriately. Repeat
several times congratulating the dog every time he uses the pet door.
If this is something new to your dog, it may take some patience to teach
your dog how to use it. When your dog makes progress give him a lot of
praise - he’s earned it!
Training your dog to use the Infra-red
collar key
Before allowing your dog to use the dog door, it is wise to acquaint your
self with the operation of the Infra-red lock. You firstly need to power up
both the dog door and the collar key and then program the Infra-red collar
key to the dog door.
From the outside of the
house take the ‘powered’ and
‘programmed’ collar key in your
hand and then move it towards
the dog door. You should hear the
locking bolts “click” and see them
retract into the dog door.
