SERIES STP SLIDE
REPAIR PROCEDURES
PHD recommends returning the unit for repair for all damaged slide bearing systems.
These instructions provide only minimal instructions to repair internal wearing components.
DISASSEMBLY
1) Remove hollow jam screw and back out travel adjustment/shock absorber assembly or remove external shock pad
from front of housing.
2) Remove plug retainers.
3) Loosen tool plate clamp screws and remove carriage screws. Once carriage screws are removed, place slide’s tool
plate down on table top and carefully remove carriage assembly from housing by lifting carriage straight up and off
housing’s rail.
4) Remove tool plate by pressing piston rod assemblies back into housing, and pushing out bore plugs. Remove and
discard both plug seals.
5) Remove piston rod assemblies from housing, discarding wear rings and piston seals. There are no wear rings on
STPxx08 & STPxx12 units.
6) Remove cartridgeretrainersandpress outcartridge assembliesusing suitablerod. Exercisecautionto prevent scratching
of piston bore sealing surfaces. Note orientation of rod seals inside cartridge. Remove and discard old rod seals and
cartridge seals.
7) Clean and inspect all components. Any worn or damaged components should be replaced.
ASSEMBLY
1) In general, use petroleum-based lubricant made for pnuematic devices and lubricate all seal components during
assembly.
2) Lubricate rod and cartridge seals and install into cartridges making sure to use same orientation as when removed.
3) Install cartridge assemblies into housing and install cartridge retainers.
4) Lubricate piston seals and install onto pistons. See FIGURE 2 for proper seal orientation.
5) Lubricate piston bores from plug end of housing and piston rods.
6) Wrap wear ring around each piston (not available on 8 mm & 12 mm units).
7) Insert piston and rod assemblies into piston bores. Installation tool/compression sleeve may be required to keep wear
rings from coming off piston during insertion. Be careful to prevent damage to seals during installation and make sure
rods pass smoothly through rod seals and protrudes beyond front of housing.
8) With tool plate face down, place housing assembly on top of tool plate and press both piston rods partially into tool
plate.
9) Placetwo suitable rods, exactly equallengthand slightlysmaller than pistionbore into eachhousing bore. Placehousing
assembly under an arbor press with tool plate up and press tool plate down until it bottoms out on piston rods.
10) Verify that tool plate is square with housing and piston rods are flush to -.010 under face of tool plate. Torque tool plate
clamp screws per torque chart.
11) Lubricate plug seals and install on bore plugs. Using uniform pressure, press bore plugs into housing and install plug
retainers.
12) Using a suitable bearing grease, re-lubricate carriage bearing assembly by placing a small amount of grease on carriage
bearing balls.
13) Place housing and tool plate assembly, with tool plate down, on table top, standing slide up vertical.
14) Align carriage assembly over end of housing rail and carefully re-assemble. Take great care not to dislodge ball bearings
frombearingwire retainerswhen re-assembling. NOTE:By placingan index fingerup against wireretainers andapplying
gentle pressure to wire retainer will keep balls from popping out, as both halves slide back together.
15) Position carriage and tool plates together and with slide retracted, torque carriage screws per torque chart.
16) Install hollow jam screws and/or external shock pads and adjust as necessary.
