Intended Use
The piezo actuator is a laboratory device as
dened by DIN EN 61010-1. It is intended for
indoor use and use in an environment that is
free of dirt, oil, and lubricants.
In accordance with its design, the piezo actua-
tor is intended for integraon into a mechanical
system for the posioning of loads, dynamic
posioning, vibraon absorpon, and force
generaon. The operator is responsible for
a standards-compliant integraon into the
overall system.
The piezo actuator is not intended for applica-
ons in areas where failure would be a consi-
derable risk for people or the environment.
The moon of the piezo actuator is along one
axis.
The intended use of the piezo actuator is
only possible when completely mounted and
connected. The piezo actuator must be ope-
rated with suitable electronics (refer to user
manual). The electronics are not included in the
scope of delivery of the piezo actuator.
The piezo actuator may not be used for
purposes other than those stated in the user
manual. The piezo actuator may only be used
in compliance with the technical specicaons
and instrucons in the user manual.
Electrical Dangers
Temperature changes and compressive stress
can induce charges in piezo actuators. Aer
disconnecng from the electronics, the piezo
actuator can remain charged for several hours.
Touching live parts can result in minor injury
from electric shock.
XDo not disassemble the piezoelectric
actuator.
XDo not touch any live parts (depending on
the model, e.g., open piezo actuator, open
ends of stranded wires, or contacts in the
plug connector).
XRemove the shorng clamp or shorng plug
that is in the scope of delivery only if neces-
sary for installaon or operaon purposes.
XIf you disconnect the piezo actuator from
the electronics, discharge it and keep it
short-circuited aer discharging.
XDo not disconnect the piezo actuator from
the electronics during operaon.
If the protecve earth conductor is missing or
not properly connected, touching the piezo
actuator can result in minor injuries from
electric shock in the case of a malfuncon.
XOperate the piezo actuator only with a
properly connected protecve earth
conductor.
XObserve the applicable standards for moun-
ng the protecve earth conductor.
Electric ashovers can be caused by moisture,
liquids, and conducve materials (e.g., metal
dust) and can destroy the piezo actuator during
operaon. In addion, electric ashovers can
also occur in certain air pressure ranges due to
the increased conducvity of the air.
XAvoid operang the piezo actuator in
environments that can increase the electric
conducvity.
XOperate the piezo actuator only under
permissible ambient condions (refer to
user manual).
Safety Informaon

MOTION | POSITIONING
PZ302EK 1.0.0 11/2019. 0.5
Models with an open housing:
XWhen handling the piezo actuator, wear
powder-free nitrile or latex gloves.
XPrevent the piezo actuator from coming
into contact with conducve liquids (e.g.,
nger sweat) and conducve materials
(e.g., metal dust).
Excessively high or wrongly connected opera-
ng voltages can cause damage to the piezo
actuator.
XUse compable electronics and cables from
PI only.
XPay aenon to the operang voltage
range of the piezo actuator (refer to user
manual).
XPay aenon to the pin assignment res-
pecvely the polarity of the stranded wires
(refer to user manual).
The constant applicaon of high voltage to
piezo actuators can lead to leakage currents
and ashovers that will destroy the ceramic.
XIf possible, limit the maximum operang
voltage during connuous operaon.
XDischarge the piezo actuator when it is not
in use.
Mechanical Dangers
Mechanical forces can destroy the piezo actu-
ator.
XAvoid shocks and drops.
The piezo actuator can be damaged by pull
forces acng on the stranded wires or the
connecng cable.
XAvoid pull forces on the stranded wires or
on the connecng cable.
High torques when ghtening the load and high
loads can overload the movable part of the
piezo actuator. Mechanical overload can cause
damage to the piezo actuator and the exures
and can also lead to loss of accuracy.
XPay aenon to the torque range specied
for the screws used during installaon
(refer to user manual).
XDo not exceed the maximum permissible
torque (refer to user manual) on the mo-
vable part of the piezo actuator.
XDo not exceed the maximum permissible
load capacies according to the specica-
ons (refer to user manual).
Excessively high operang frequencies can
destroy the piezo actuator.
XSelect the operang frequency according to
the applicaon.
XPay aenon to the resonant frequency
and dynamic forces (refer to user manual).
Excessively steep edges in the control signal or
excessively fast discharging can trigger a strong
mechanical impulse and damage the piezo
actuator.
XAvoid steep edges in the control signal.
XDischarge the piezo actuator before
short-circuing.
XIf the connecng cable is accidentally
pulled out during operaon, switch o the
electronics before you reconnect.
Uncontrolled oscillaon can damage the piezo
actuator or your applicaon. Oscillaon is indi-
cated by a humming noise and can be caused by
the following:
▪▪A change in the load and/or dynamics
requires the servo control or operang
parameters to be adjusted.
▪▪The piezo actuator is operated near to its
resonant frequency.
XIf oscillaon occurs, switch o the servo
mode of the electronics or stop the piezo
actuator immediately.
XCheck the servo control sengs respec-
vely the sengs for the operang para-
meters (refer to user manual).
Models with open housing:
Touching live parts during operaon can result
in minor injury from electric shock.
XDo not touch the piezo actuator during
operaon.
XInsulate the piezo actuator electrically
from the surrounding mechanics before
startup to prevent direct or indirect contact
with live parts. Pay aenon to both the
clearance and creepage distances required
for the operang voltage and the standards
applicable to your applicaon.

Thermal Dangers
For models P-603 and P-604 only:
The surface of the piezo actuator and its
surroundings can heat up during operaon.
Touching the piezo actuator and its surrounding
parts can result in minor injuries from burning.
XMake sure that the hot piezo actuator and
the surrounding parts cannot be touched.
All models:
The heat produced during operaon of the
piezo actuator can aect your applicaon.
XInstall the piezo actuator so that the appli-
caon is not impaired by dissipang heat.
Connecng the Piezo Actuator to the
Protecve Earth Conductor
The piezo actuator does not have a separate
protecve earth connector. For this reason, the
risk of electric shock must be prevented in one
of the following ways:
▪▪Installing the piezo actuator on an electri-
cally conducve surface connected to a
protecve earth conductor
▪▪Connecng the piezo actuator to a pro-
tecve earth conductor via its mounng
interfaces (holes)
▪▪Electrical insulaon of the piezo actuator
according to protecon class II
Connecng the piezo actuator to the protec
ve earth conductor

for connecng the protecve earth con-
ductor.
XUse electrically conducve mounng mate-
rial (e.g., screws or glue)
