IMPORTANT
Installer and Users please note:
These instructions should be read carefully and left with the user of the product
for future reference.
BEFORE USE
Inspect the product including its cable and plug for any signs of damage. If the
product is damaged, DO NOT use it, and contact your supplier immediately. The
appliance contains a refrigerant gas, so must be kept upright at all times. After
unpacking wait 3 hours for the refrigerant gas to stabilise before use.
INSTALLATION
Stand the EH1640 on a firm, flat, level surface. Connect the exhaust hose as
follows: expand a small section of the end, and screw into the indoor adaptor;
then slide the indoor adaptor into the slot at the back of the unit. Expand a small
section of the other end of the hose, and screw into the fish-tail-shaped adaptor.

Slide the two-part window adaptor to the correct length to fit the window. Close
the window as far as possible to keep the window adaptor in place. Clip the fish-
tail shaped adaptor into the rectangular aperture in the window adaptor making
sure that the louvres can open and close freely.
Keep the hose as straight as possible, avoid dips where the moisture from the
exhaust air can condense and fill the tube with water. Do not allow the hose to be
crushed.
The hose can be expanded up to 1.5 m long, but the shorter it is the more
efficiently the EH1640 will operate. Do not extend the hose, or replace with
another type of hose.
Fit 2 x AAA batteries in to the
remote control, observing the
correct polarity.
Do not attempt to recharge the
batteries.
Do not dispose any of the
batteries in a fire, as they may
explode.
Do not use any other type of
battery.

The EH1640 has a built-in condensate tank, for continuous operation the tank
can be permanently connected to the drain. To do this a drain tube may be fitted
as shown:
Firstly unscrew the drain cap and remove the bung then using a piece of 18 mm
diameter tube (not supplied) connect one end to the drain –hole and run the pipe
to a drain, making sure that it runs downhill all the way.
If a permanent drain tube is not fitted the condensate tank will need to be
occasionally emptied. This should only happen very rarely, as most of the water
collected is evaporated and sent down the exhaust air tube.
EMPTY CONDENSATE TANK
To empty the water tank, switch the unit off by pressing the ON/OFF button, wait
for three minutes then disconnect from the mains supply. Place a drainage pan
underneath the drain outlet plug (at the bottom, rear of the unit in the centre).
Unscrew the cap and withdraw the bung, allow the water to drain into the
drainage pan. Replace the bung and cap then reconnect the unit to the mains
supply.
REMOTE CONTROL STORAGE COMPARTMENT
The EH1640 is supplied with a remote control storage compartment on the side
of the unit. See figure below.

GENERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Domestic wiring must be tested periodically by a qualified electrician at least
once every 10 years or at every change of occupancy.
For office and retail premises, and buildings such as village halls, the wiring must
be inspected at least once every 5 years.
It is recommended that all building be fitted with smoke alarms (it is mandatory
for new buildings).
PRODUCT SAFETY
•This appliance can be used by children aged from 8 years and above
and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack
of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or
instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and understand
the hazards involved.
•Children shall not play with the appliance.
•Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without
supervision.
•Place the appliance on a firm flat surface. Ensure that the it is kept upright at
all times
•Ensure that there is at least 300 mm (1”) between the sides of the appliance
and any flammable materials
•Ensure that there is at least 900 mm (3”) from the top of the appliance and
any flammable materials.
•Do not place on soft surfaces.
•Do not cover.
•Do not obstruct the air intakes and exhausts.
For indoor use only
•Not suitable for use in boats, caravans or similar locations.
•Do not use in bathrooms, or in wet locations.
•Do not place the mains lead beneath a carpet or rug.
•Do not use the appliance in locations where paint, petrol or other flammable
liquids are used or stored.
•Always transport and store in an upright position.
•Do not allow the appliance to fall over when there is water in the bucket.
PAT TESTING.
When used in an office environment we recommend that this product should be
safety-tested yearly by a qualified electrician (PAT Tested).
We recommend that it is PAT tested regularly when used in a domestic
environment.

OPERATION
Leave the appliance in an upright position for 3 hours before first use.
Plug the mains lead into a 13 Amp mains socket (unless permanently installed).
If connecting via an extension lead, make sure that the lead is rated at 13 Amps
or more, and that it is fully unwound.
Switch the unit on at the mains socket.
This unit can be operated from the front panel or via the supplied remote control.
Power Button: Press the /Power button to start the unit. The indicator
illuminates when the appliance is ON. There will be a short delay (of about a
minute) before the appliance starts to operate.
/MODE Button: Select the mode by pressing the /MODE button. The
available modes are: COOL – DEHUMIDIFY (DRY) – HEAT – FAN – ENERGY
SAVING
•/COOL mode: Cools the room to the desired temperature as set on
the remote control or panel using the or buttons. The temperature
can be set between 16°C and 30°C (60°F - 86°F) and the fan speed can
be adjusted using the /FAN buttons, the display will show the fan
speed as /Lo, /Med and /Hi.

•/Dry mode: removes humidity (dehumidify), but does not affect room
temperature. The fan operates at its lowest speed shown as . For best
results, do not use the exhaust tube, but fit a permanent drainage pipe
to the drain outlet as shown on page 4.
•/HEAT mode: heats if the room temperature is below the selected
temperature. Use the and buttons to select the desired room
temperature. The temperature can be set between 16°C and 30°C
(60°F - 86°F). When the temperature reaches desired level the
compressor will stop, and the fan will continue to run. Heating
performance reduces if the outdoor temperature falls below 7 °C. in this
mode the fan will run at /Lo speed
•/Fan mode: circulates the air, but does not affect room temperature
or humidity. The fan speed can be altered by pushing the button, the
fan has 3 speeds indicated by the /Lo, /Med and /Hi symbols on
the unit display.
•/Energy Saving: The energy saving function on this unit runs the fan
at /Lo speed only and sets the fan to run for 30 seconds on then off
for 2 minutes 30 seconds. The unit will also switch off the duct fan and
compressor when the cooling temperature reaches the set level and will
not switch on until the temperature rises above this level.
/SLEEP (Press + buttons at the same time on panel): When the sleep
button is pressed the icon appears in the LCD display and the fan runs at
/Lo speed and cannot be adjusted. Only works in /HEAT and /COOL
modes. In /COOL mode the set temperature will increase 1°C after 2 hours
and a further 1°C after another 2 hours then remain constant. In /HEAT mode
the set temperature will decrease 1°C after 2 hours and a further 1°C after
another 2 hours then remain constant. The sleep mode will automatically be
cancelled on any change of running mode.
/TIMER: This function allows an auto ON or OFF time to be set. The LCD
display will show a flashing symbol. The first 2 digits are for hours and
the second 2 for minutes. You can use the and buttons to set the time in 30
minute intervals. If the unit is switched on and working then setting the timer will
set the running time until the unit switches OFF. If you wish the unit to start in a
pre-determined time then first turn the unit on and select the mode and
temperature desired, and then power the unit down by touching the power
button. Push the /TIMER button and the display will show , set the time
until you wish the unit to start in 30 minute intervals. The unit will start to count
down and will start automatically with the last selected mode and temperature as
set earlier.

/SWING (Press + buttons at the same time on panel): When selected
the icon will appear on the LCD screen and the horizontal louvre will slowly
raise and lower to distribute the air evenly. Press again to cancel.
/Auto Clean: This option only works in Cooling, Heating and Energy saving
modes. With this option on, the upper and lower fans run for 3 minutes after the
unit is switched off to clean the evaporator and condensate tanks. This also
helps to prevent mould build up in the cooling system and prolongs the life of the
unit.
FAULT CONDITIONS
• E4: In /COOL mode, when the compressor has run continuously for
more than 10 minutes and the air temperature of the unit is below
2°C/36°F for 20 seconds or more the Unit will enter frost protection
mode and E4 will show on the display. The compressor and lower fan
will shut-down until the fan air temperature rises to above 8°C/46°F, at
this point the unit will return to normal working conditions and the
compressor will restart after approximately 3 minutes.
•:An audible alarm will sound and this icon will appear in the LCD
display when the lower condensate tank is full. To empty the tank refer
to the “Empty Condensate Tank” instructions on page 4.
•The unit has an auto-defrost function. When in operation during HEAT
mode the icon will appear in the display until the auto defrost has
been completed and the unit will return to normal operation.
• CH01: This fault code will show when there is a fault with the room
temperature sensor. The sensor and related circuits should be checked
by a qualified service agent.
• CH02: This fault code will show when there is a fault with the air
temperature sensor. The sensor and related circuits should be checked
by a qualified service agent.

MAINTENANCE
The unit should be cleaned regularly to maintain the best possible operating
efficiency and performance.
Before any maintenance should be performed turn off the unit and once the fans
and compressors have stopped unplug the unit from the mains supply and leave
for 3 minutes.
•Surface Cleaning
a. Clean the surface of the unit with a soft damp cloth; do not use
any chemical cleaners or solvents.
b. Clean and remove any dust and dirt from the louvres and air
outlets.
•Filter Cleaning
Clean the filters every two weeks as the condition of the filters will inhibit
the efficient operation of the unit. Use warm water with a small quantity
of detergent, do not use solvents.
To clean the filters follow the following instructions.

First remove the covers by pulling
the rear cover away from the unit
followed by the side cover. See
figure opposite. The filters can
unclipped from the frames and
washed in warm water. The filters
should be replaced in reverse
order, side first then rear.
Upper Filter
First remove the cover by pulling the
rear cover away in the direction of the
arrow. See figure opposite. The filter
can be unclipped from the frame and
washed in warm water.
•Storage
When the unit is to be left idle for a prolonged period please follow the
procedure below.

a. Remove heat exhaust hose by pushing the clips on the rear
socket to the side with your thumbs, remove and clean with a
soft cloth.
b. Drain the condensate tank as per the instructions on page 4.
c. Run the unit in fan only mode for 12 hours to dry out the unit
interior.
d. Turn off the unit and neatly wrap the power lead round the
storage hooks at the rear of the unit and store the plug in the
storage socket on the reverse of the unit.
e. Remove batteries from remote control and store in the remote
control storage compartment on the side of the unit.
If the mains lead is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or an
authorised service centre. If the mains plug needs to be replaced, proceed as
follows:
Connect the brown wire to the terminal labelled "L".
•Connect the blue wire to the terminal
labelled "N".
•Connect the green/yellow wire to the
terminal labelled with the earth symbol
or "E".
•Make sure that the cord-grip is
positioned correctly (over the outer
sheath of the cable) and is fully
tightened.
OPERATING COSTS
At time of going to press, the average cost of electricity is £0.12 per unit
(kilowatt-hour). The amount you are being charged will be shown on your
electricity bill.
At this cost, the EH1640 will cost £0.19 per hour to run in heating, cooling or
dehumidifying modes, and £0.05 per hour to run in the fan-only mode.
To minimise the power used (and reduce operating costs):
•Make sure that the filter is kept clean.
•Make sure that the air intakes and exhausts are not obstructed.
•Keep doors and windows closed to prevent conditioned air from
escaping, and to prevent exhaust air from re-entering the room.
•Use blinds to prevent direct sunlight reaching the room.
•Set the temperature higher whilst cooling, or lower whilst heating.
