PRODUCT DESCRIPTION SHORT-FORM DATA
The PIM36.241 is a DIN rail mountable single-phase-
input power supply, whi h provides a floating,
stabilized and galvani ally separated SELV/PELV/ES1
output voltage. The output fulfils the requirements
for a limited power sour e a ording to NEC CLASS 2.
The devi e is equipped with push-in terminals, whi h
are optimized for automated wiring.
The me hani ally robust housing is made of a high-
grade, reinfor ed molded material, whi h permits
surrounding temperatures up to +70°C.
The unit is designed as “Class of Prote tion” II unit and
fulfills the safety and EMC requirements without an
input PE onne tion. This saves wiring osts.
The PIANO family is a ompa t industrial grade DIN rail
power supply series that fo uses on the essential
features needed in today’s industrial appli ations. The
ex ellent ost/performan e ratio does not ompromise
quality or reliability.

1. Intended Use
This devi e is designed for installation in an en losure and is intended for ommer ial use, su h as in industrial ontrol,
pro ess ontrol, monitoring, measurement, Audio/Video, information or ommuni ation equipment or the like.
Do not use this devi e in equipment, where malfun tioning may ause severe personal injury or threaten human life without
additional appropriate safety devi es, that are suited for the end-appli ation. If this devi e is used in a manner outside of
its spe ifi ation, the prote tion provided by the devi e may be impaired.
2. Installation Instru tions
DANGER Risk of electrical shock, fire, personal injur or death.
– Turn power off before working on the devi e. Prote t against inadvertent re-powering.
– Do not open, modify or repair the devi e.
– Use aution to prevent any foreign obje ts from entering the housing.
– Do not use in wet lo ations or in areas where moisture or ondensation an be expe ted.
– Do not tou h during power-on, and immediately after power-off. Hot surfa es may ause burns.
Obe the following installation instructions:
This devi e may only be installed and put into operation by qualified personnel. This devi e does not ontain servi eable
parts. The tripping of an internal fuse is aused by an internal defe t. If damage or malfun tion should o ur during
installation or operation, immediately turn power off and send unit to the fa tory for inspe tion.
Install devi e in an en losure providing prote tion against ele tri al, me hani al and fire hazards. Install the devi e onto a
DIN rail a ording to EN 60715 with the input terminals on the bottom of the devi e.
Make sure that the wiring is orre t by following all lo al and national odes. Use appropriate opper ables that are
designed for a minimum operating temperature of +60°C for ambient temperatures up to +45°C, +75°C for ambient
temperatures up to +60°C and +90°C for ambient temperatures up to +70°C. Ensure that all strands of a stranded wire
enter the terminal onne tion.
The devi e is designed for pollution degree 2 areas in ontrolled environments. No ondensation or frost is allowed. The
en losure of the devi e provides a degree of prote tion of IP20. The en losure does not provide prote tion against spilled
liquids.
The devi e is designed for overvoltage ategory II zones. Below 2000m altitude the devi e is tested for impulse withstand
voltages up to 4kV, whi h orresponds to OVC III a ording to IEC 60664-1.
The devi e is designed as “Class of Prote tion” II equipment a ording to IEC 61140.
The devi e is suitable to be supplied from TN, TT or IT mains networks. The ontinuous voltage between the input terminal
and the PE potential must not ex eed 300Va . A dis onne ting means shall be provided for the input of the devi e.
The devi e is designed for onve tion ooling and does not require an external fan. Do not obstru t airflow and do not
over ventilation grid!
The devi e is designed for altitudes up to 5000m (16 400ft). Above 2000m (6560ft) a redu tion in output urrent is required.
Keep the following minimum installation learan es: 40mm on top, 20mm on the bottom, 0mm left and right side. In rease
the 0mm to 15mm in ase the adja ent devi e is a heat sour e.
The devi e is designed, tested and approved for bran h ir uits up to 20A without additional prote tion devi e. If an
external fuse is utilized, do not use ir uit breakers smaller than 6A B- or 4A C-Chara teristi to avoid a nuisan e tripping
of the ir uit breaker.
The maximum surrounding air temperature is +70°C (158°F). The operational temperature is the same as the ambient or
surrounding air temperature and is defined 2 m below the devi e. The devi e is designed to operate in areas between 5%
and 95% relative humidity.

4. DC-Input
Do not operate this devi e with DC-input voltage.
5. Input Inrush Current
A NTC limits the input inrush urrent after turn-on of the input voltage. The inrush urrent is input voltage and ambient
temperature dependent. The output load has no impa t on the inrush urrent value.
The harging urrent into EMI suppression apa itors is disregarded in the first mi rose onds after swit h-on.

6. Output
The output provides a SELV/PELV/ES1 rated voltage, whi h is galvani ally isolated from the input voltage. The output is
ele troni ally prote ted against no-load, overload and short ir uit. In ase of a prote tion event, audible noise may o ur.
The output is designed to supply any kind of loads, in luding indu tive and apa itive loads. Capa itive loads should not
be larger than 4 000μF with 1.5A or 5 000μF with 0.75A additional resistive load.
At heavy overloads (when output voltage falls below 14V), the devi e delivers ontinuous output urrent for 55ms. After
this, the output is swit hed off for approx. 340ms before a new start attempt is automati ally performed. This y le is
repeated as long as the overload exists.
If the overload has been leared, the devi e will operate normally.

7. Hold-up Time
The hold-up time is the time during whi h a devi e’s output voltage remains within spe ifi ation following the loss of input
power. The hold-up time is output load dependent. At no load, the hold-up time an be up to several se onds. The green
DC-OK LED is also on during this time.

The Lifetime expe tan y shown in the table indi ates the minimum operating hours (servi e life) and is determined by
the lifetime expe tan y of the built-in ele trolyti apa itors. Lifetime expe tan y is spe ified in operational hours and is
al ulated a ording to the apa itor’s manufa turer spe ifi ation.
Please note: The manufa turer of the ele trolyti apa itors only guarantees a maximum life of up to 15 years (131 400h).

10. MTBF
MTBF stands for Mean Time Between Failure, whi h is al ulated a ording to statisti al devi e failures, and indi ates
reliability of a devi e. It is the statisti al representation of the likelihood of a unit to fail and does not ne essarily represent
the life of a produ t.
The MTBF figure is a statisti al representation of the likelihood of a devi e to fail. A MTBF figure of e.g. 1 000 000h means
that statisti ally one unit will fail every 100 hours if 10 000 units are installed in the field. However, it annot be determined
if the failed unit has been running for 50 000h or only for 100h.
For these types of units the MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) value is the same value as the MTBF value.

The output voltage is floating and has no ohmi onne tion to the ground.
The output is insulated to the input by a double or reinfor ed insulation.
Type and routine tests are ondu ted by the manufa turer. Field tests may be ondu ted in the field using the appropriate
test equipment whi h applies the voltage with a slow ramp (2s up and 2s down). Conne t all phase-terminals together
as well as all output poles before ondu ting the test. When testing, set the ut-off urrent settings to the value in the
table below.

21. Appli ation Notes
21.1. CHARGING OF BATTERIES
Do not use the power supply to harge batteries.
21.2. SERIES OPERATION
Power supplies of the same type an be onne ted in series for higher output
voltages. It is possible to onne t as many units in series as needed, providing the
sum of the output voltage does not ex eed 150Vd . Voltages with a potential
above 60Vd must be installed with a prote tion against tou hing.
Avoid return voltage (e.g. from a de elerating motor or battery) whi h is applied
to the output terminals.
Keep an installation learan e of 15mm (left / right) between two power supplies
and avoid installing the power supplies on top of ea h other.
Pay attention that leakage urrent, EMI, inrush urrent, harmoni s will in rease
when using multiple power supplies.
21.3. PARALLEL USE TO INCREASE OUTPUT POWER
Do not use parallel devi es for higher output urrents.
21.4. PARALLEL USE FOR 1+1 REDUNDANCY
Do not use this devi e to build redundant systems sin e there is no monitoring (DC-OK signal) in luded.
21.5. TWO PHASE OPERATION
The power supply an also be operated on two phases of a three-phase-system.

21.6. USE IN A TIGHTLY SEALED ENCLOSURE
When the power supply is installed in a tightly sealed en losure, the temperature inside the en losure will be higher than
outside. In su h situations, the inside temperature defines the ambient temperature for the power supply.
The power supply is pla ed in the middle of the box, no other heat produ ing items are inside the box. The temperature
sensor inside the box is pla ed in the middle of the right side of the power supply with a distan e of 1 m. The following
measurement results an be used as a referen e to estimate the temperature rise inside the en losure.
