Der „KV-1“, benannt nach dem sowjetischen Verteidigungsminister Marshall Kliment Voro-
schilow, war zu Beginn des zweiten Weltkrieges der wohl stärkste sowjetische Panzer. Seine
massive Panzerung sowie die großkalibrige Kanone machte ihn für die Wehrmacht während
des Unternehmens Barbarossa überraschend zu einem harten Gegner, da zunächst kein ver-
gleichbarer Panzer zur Verfügung stand und erst mit der „Ju 87 Stuka“ oder der „8,8 cm Flak
36“ ein Durchdringen der Panzerung möglich war. Allerdings wurden die Vorteile des „KV-1“
oftmals durch unerfahrene Panzerbesatzungen zunichte gemacht, denn anstatt aus sicherer
Entfernung zu kämpfen, brachten sie sich durch riskante Fahrmanöver selber in Gefahr. Zudem
fielen viele Fahrzeuge der ersten Baureihen durch technische Mängel aus, wodurch stetige
Verbesserungen notwendig waren. Wären die Panzerbesatzungen besser auf diesen Panzer
geschult gewesen, oder hätten zu Beginn des Unternehmens Barbarossa mehr Panzer dieses
Typs bereitgestanden, hätte die Wehrmacht wohl weit größere Probleme gehabt.
Die Entwicklung des „KV-1“ startete 1938, als man einen neuen schweren Panzer benötigte.
Zunächst entstanden die Prototypen der Multiturmpanzer „SMK“ und „T-100“. Die Entwickler
des „SMK“, die Kirow Werke Leningrad (russ. Leningradskij Kirowskij Zawod – kurz: LKZ), unter-
breiteten aber auch simultan unter der Bezeichnung „KV“ ein Konzept für einen Ein-Turm
Panzer. Da sich die beiden konkurrierenden Multiturmpanzer aufgrund zahlreicher
Unzulänglichkeiten nicht durchsetzen konnten, wurde am 27. Februar der „KV-1“ zur
Weiterentwicklung freigegeben. Die Entwicklung ging zügig voran, so dass nach mehreren
Erprobungen, darunter auch Kampferprobungen in Finnland, die Serienproduktion der “Ausf.
1939 LKZ“ im April 1940 startete. Diese Ausführung war mit einer 76,2 mm Kanone L-11 aus-
gestattet, doch schnell stellte sich heraus, dass die Leistung nicht ausreichend war. Deshalb fiel
bereits Ende 1940 die Entscheidung, den „KV-1“ mit der neuen und leistungsstärkeren 76,2 mm
Kanone F-32 auszustatten, was natürlich auch große Änderungen am Turm zur Folge hatte.
Die Produktion der nun deutlich verbesserten „Ausf. 1940 LKZ“ startete im Januar 1941 und
bis zum Einmarsch der deutschen Truppen in die Sowjetunion im Juni 1941 stellten die Kirow-
Werke insgesamt 264 Exemplare dieser Ausführung her. Da die Panzerung dieser frühen
Baulose der deutschen „8,8 cm Flak 36“ nicht stand hielt, wurden die späten Baulose mit
zusätzlichen Panzerplatten am Bug und an der Wanne versehen. Aufgrund des Einmarsch der
deutschen Truppen sollte die Anzahl der gefertigten Fahrzeuge durch Einbindung weiterer
Produktionsstätten deutlich erhöht werden; für dieses Vorhaben stoppte man sogar die
Produktion des „KV-2“, um weitere Kapazitäten für den „KV-1“ freizumachen.
Kriegsbedingt wurde die Produktion bereits 1941 Schritt für Schritt von Leningrad nach
Tscheljabinsk in den Ural verlagert. Die Produktion bei „LKZ“ in Leningrad lief unter erschwer-
ten Bedingungen bis zum kompletten Einschluss der Stadt durch deutsche Truppen im
September 1941 weiter. In Tscheljabinsk wurde fortan die „Ausf. 1940 TschTZ“ in den
Tscheljabinsker Traktoren Werken (russ. Tscheljabinski Traktornij Zawod – kurz: TschTZ) herge-
stellt. Diese Variante unterschied sich bereits von der Ausführung „LKZ“ durch insgesamt 1.671
Änderungen zur Vereinfachung der Serienproduktion. Weiterentwicklungen waren die
Varianten „Ausf. 1941 s ekranami“, mit einer Zusatzpanzerung, und „Ausf. 1941 TschTZ“. Die
Varianten „Ausf. 1941 TschKZ“ und „Ausf. 1942 TschKZ“ hatten einen Gussturm anstatt des
geschweißten Turms. Die Bezeichnung „TschKZ“ steht dabei für den Zusammenschluss des
evakuierten Leningrader Werks „LKZ mit den Werken „TschTZ“ und „UZTM“ zum Tscheljabinskij
Kirowskiy Zawod N° 185 („TschKZ“).
Letztendlich führten die Weiterentwicklungen zu einer neuen Serie schwerer Panzer, dem „IS-
1“, der den „KV-1“ gegen Ende 1943 ablöste.

At the beginning of the Second World War the KV-1, called after the Soviet Defence Minister
Marshall Kliment Voroshilov, was the most powerful Soviet tank. Its massive armour and high
calibre cannon made it into a surprisingly tough opponent for the German army during
Operation Barbarossa, as they had no comparable tanks available and it was only possible to
penetrate the armour with the Ju 87 Stuka or the 8.8 cm Flak 36. In fact the advantages of
the KV-1 were often nullified by inexperienced tank crews who, instead of attacking from a
safe distance, endangered themselves by risky manoeuvres. In addition many vehicles of the
first series fell due to technical defects for which continual improvements were needed. If the
tank crews had been better trained in their use or if more tanks of this type had been ready
for action at the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the German army would have had much
greater problems.
The development of the KV-1 started in 1936, when a new heavy tank was needed. The first
prototypes were the SMK and T-100 multiple turret tanks. The developers of the SMK, the
Kirov Works in Leningrad (Russ: Leningradskij Kirowskij Zawod = LKZ) however also submitted
a concept for a single turret tank designated the KV. As neither of the competing multiple tur-
ret tanks could be adopted due to various shortcomings, on 27th February the KV-1 was
released for further development. Development proceeded apace, so that after several trials,
including in combat in Finland, series production of the type 1939 LKZ started in April 1940.
This version was equipped with the 76.2 mm L-11 cannon, but it quickly became apparent that
it was not powerful enough. By the end of 1940 therefore the decision had been taken to
equip the KV-1 with the new and more powerful 76.2 mm F-32 cannon, which naturally
necessitated major modifications to the turret.
Production of the now considerably improved 1940 LKZ version started in January 1941 and
by the time the German troops marched into the Soviet Union in June 1941 the Kirov Works
had built a total of 264 of this version. As the armour of this early series could not withstand
the German 8.8 cm Flak 36 the later series were equipped with additional armour plating on
the front and hull. Following the incursion of the German troops the number of tanks made
was increased by using other factories, which halted the production of the KV-2 in order to
release additional capacity for the KV-1.
Due to the war, by 1942 production had gradually been moved from Leningrad to Chelyabinsk
in the Urals. Production at LKZ in Leningrad continued under increasingly difficult conditions
until the city was completely encircled by the German troops in September 1941. In
Chelyabinsk construction of the type 1940 TschTZ continued in the Chelyabinsk Tractor Works
(Russian Tschelyabinski Traktornij Zawod = TschTZ). This variant differed from the type LKZ by
a total of 1,671 modifications to simplify series production. Further developments were the
variants 1941 s ekranami with additional armour and 1941 TschTZ. The types 1941 TschKZ and
1942 TschKZ had a cast turret instead of the welded one. The designation TschKZ therefore
stands for the amalgamation of the evacuated Leningrad Works LKZ with the TschTZ and
UZTM into the Tscheljabinskij Kirowskiy Zawod No. 185 (TschKZ). Ultimately further develop-
ments gave rise to a new series of heavy tanks the IS-1 which replaced the KV-1 towards the
end of 1943.
