Introduction
This manual contains detailed instructions on the operation and maintenance of this machine. To get
maximum versatility from this machine all operators should carefully read and follow the instructions in
this manual. Please keep this manual in a handy place near the machine.
Please read “Safety Information” in this manual before using this machine. It contains important infor-
mation related to USER SAFETY and PREVENTING EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS.
Power Source
120 V, 60 Hz, 11 A or more
Please be sure to connect the power cable to a power source as above.
Laser Safety
This machine is considered a CDRH class I laser device, safe for office/EDP use. The machine con-
tains 7 milliwatt, 645 - 660 nanometer wavelength, AlGaInP Laser Diode. Direct (or indirect reflected)
eye contact with the laser beam might cause serious eye damage. Safety precautions and interlock
mechanisms have been designed to prevent any possible laser beam exposure to the operator.

The supplier shall not be responsible for any damage or expense that might result from the use of parts
other than genuine parts from the supplier with your office products.

Safety Information
When using your printer, the following safety precautions should always be fol-
lowed.
Safety During Operation
In this manual, the following important symbols are used:

WARNING:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if instructions
are not followed, could result in death or serious injury.

Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if instructions are
not followed, may result in minor or moderate injury or damage to
property.

RWARNING:
•It is dangerous to handle the plug with wet hands. Doing this may re-
sult in receiving an electric shock.
•Connect the power cord directly into a wall outlet and never use an ex-
tension cord.
•Disconnect the power plug (by pulling the plug, not the cable) if the
power cable or plug becomes frayed or otherwise damaged.
•Confirm that the wall outlet is near the machine and freely accessible,
so that in event of an emergency, it can be unplugged easily.
•Only connect the machine to the power source described in the man-
ual.
•Avoid multi-wiring.
•Do not damage, break or make any modifications to the power cord.
Do not place heavy objects on it, pull it hard or bend it more than nec-
essary. These actions could cause an electric shock or fire.
•To avoid hazardous electric shock or laser radiation exposure, do not
remove any covers or screws other than those specified in this manu-
al.
•Turn off the power and disconnect the power plug (by pulling the plug,
not the cable) if any of the following conditions exists:
•You spill something into the equipment.
•You suspect that your equipment needs service or repair.
•Your equipment's cover has been damaged.
•Do not incinerate spilled toner or used toner. Toner dust might ignite
when exposed to an open flame.
•Disposal should take place at our authorized dealer or at appropriate
collection sites.
•Dispose of the used toner cartridge in accordance with the local regu-
lation.
•Do not take apart or attempt any modifications to this machine. There
is a risk of fire, electric shock, explosion or loss of sight. If the machine
has laser systems, there is a risk of serious eye damage.
•Do not place the IC2 lithium battery near or into fire, or it will explode
and cause a burn.
•The User Account Enhance Unit installed on the controller board has
a IC2 lithium battery which can explode if replaced incorrectly. Re-
place the User Account Enhance Unit only with the indicated one.

RCAUTION:
•Do not eat or swallow toner.
•Keep toner (used or unused) and toner cartridges out of reach of children.
•Protect the equipment from dampness or wet weather, such as rain, snow,
and so on.
•Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet before you move the equipment.
While moving the equipment, you should take care that the power cord will
not be damaged under the equipment.
•When you disconnect the power plug from the wall outlet, always pull the
plug (not the cable).
•Do not allow paper clips, staples, or other small metallic objects to fall inside
the equipment.
•For environmental reasons, do not dispose of the equipment or expended
supply waste at household waste collection points. Disposal can take place
at an authorized dealer or at appropriate collection sites.
•The inside of the machine becomes very hot. Do not touch the parts with a
label indicating "v" (means hot surface). Touching "v" (means hot surface)
could result in a burn.
•The inside of the machine becomes very hot. Do not touch the inner surface
with "n" and "v" labels indicating a hot surface. Touching that surface
could result in a burn.
•Our products are engineered to meet high standards of quality and function-
ality, and we recommend that you only use the expendable supplies avail-
able at an authorized dealer.
•The fusing unit becomes very hot. When installing the new fusing unit, turn
off the printer and wait about 30 minutes. After that, install the new fusing
unit. Not waiting for the unit to cool down can result in a burn.
•Do not pull out the fusing unit forcefully. It may cause the unit to fall and re-
sult in an injury.
•When touching the fusing unit, do not touch any areas other than the handle
as it may cause a burn.
•Do not incinerate the oil bottle. This could cause a fire or an injury.
•Spilt oil is very slippery. If oil is spilt, wipe it up with an alkaline cleaner. Oth-
erwise, the oily surface can create the danger of slipping and an injury.
•Do not open the front cover when the paper tray is pulled out halfway. If you
do, it might cause an injury.
•Do not put an object on the left cover when it is open.
•When replacing the photoconductor unit, hold the handles in beige and
green, and then lift it slowly. Lifting it in an inappropriate manner or handling
it carelessly may cause the unit to drop and result in an injury.

RCAUTION:
•Do not put an object on the front cover when it is open.
•When removing misfed paper, do not touch the fusing unit because it could
be very hot.
•To prevent an injury, this printer should be lifted by at least two people.
•When moving the machine, each person should hold the handles that are
located on opposite sides, and then lift it slowly. Lifting it carelessly or drop-
ping it may cause an injury.
•Before installing options, the machine should be turned off and unplugged
for at least an hour. Components inside the machine become very hot, and
can cause a burn if touched.
•When moving the Paper Feed Unit, hold the handles that are located on the
top of the unit, and then lift it slowly. Lifting it carelessly or dropping it may
cause an injury.
•When installing the Duplex Unit, do not release the unit until it is fastened
firmly in place. It may cause the unit to fall and result in an injury.
•When installing the Finisher, be sure to hold the sides of them. If you hold
the bottom, your hands may get caught and injured.
•When moving the Finisher, hold the center of both sides, and then lift it slow-
ly. Lifting it carelessly or dropping it may cause an injury.
•When installing the 4-bin Mailbox, be sure to hold the sides of them. If you
hold the bottom, your hands may get caught and injured.
•When moving the 4-bin Mailbox, hold the center of both sides, and then lift
it slowly. Lifting it carelessly or dropping it may cause an injury.
•Do not touch the inside of the controller board compartment. It may cause a
machine malfunction or a burn.
•Keep the machine away from humidity and dust. A fire or an electric shock
might occur.
•Place the machine on a strong and level surface. Otherwise, the machine
might fall and result in an injury.
•If you use the machine in a confined space, confirm that there is a continu-
ous flow of air.
•The paper tray does not have a stopper. When pulling it out, be careful not
to pull it strongly. If you do, the tray might fall and cause an injury.

ENERGY STAR Program

❖Low-power Mode (Energy Saver mode)
This printer automatically lowers its power consumption 30 minutes after the
last operation has been completed. To exit Low-power (Energy Saver) mode,
press any key on the control panel. For more information about how to con-
figure Energy Saver mode, see “Using the Control Panel”in the Administrator
Reference on the CD-ROM labeled "Operating Instructions".

❖Specifications
As an ENERGY STAR Partner, we have determined
that this machine model meets the ENERGY STAR
Guidelines for energy efficiency.
The ENERGY STAR Guidelines intend to establish an international energy-saving system for
developing and introducing energy-efficient office equipment to deal with environmental is-
sues, such as global warming.
When a product meets the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for energy efficiency, the Partner shall
place the ENERGY STAR logo onto the machine model.
This product was designed to reduce the environmental impact associated with office equip-
ment by means of energy-saving features, such as Low-power mode.

❖High Image Quality Best for Photo Print
With the machine's 1,800 ×600 dpi equivalent high resolution, 256 color gra-
dation or 16,700,000 full color CMYK printing is possible. The machine is
great for printing not only general documents or illustrations but also docu-
ments containing digital camera images. Presentation documents, brochures
or fliers can be made more dramatic with full color printing. Also, RPCS, PCL
5c and Adobe PostScript 3 printer languages are supported for a variety of
color print situations.

❖High Performance with Fast Printing Speed
The machine prints in full color at 10 ppm (pages per minute) and in mono-
chrome at 36 ppm, which is faster than major monochrome printers. The
printing speed for the black and white part of a document with color and
black and white, which is most commonly printed in offices, is also 36 ppm.
The fast printing speed enables you to save time.

❖Space-Saving Desktop Finisher *1 Supported
The Finisher *1 is equipped with useful functions such as electronic collation
and stapling. When used with the Duplex Unit *1 , a variety of output func-
tions are available. The Finisher is compact enough to be mounted on top of
the printer, saving space in the room.

❖Versatile Functions of the New Generation Controller
The high-speed 64-bit controller architecture and the RPCS command system
that has been optimized for Windows software have made high-speed print-
ing possible. The locked print function *1 requires the user to enter a pass-
word to print a document. Also, the number of pages being printed can be
monitored by each user *1 . All these functions are provided to improve work
efficiency and support the office/network administrators.

Exterior: Front View
1. Front Cover
Open this cover when replacing the ton-
er, photoconductor unit, fusing unit,
charger, or waste toner bottle or when re-
moving misfed paper.
2. Power Switch
Use this switch to turn the power on and
off.
3. Control Panel
Contains keys for printer control and a
panel display that shows the printer sta-
tus.

4. Output Tray
Output is stacked here with the print side
down.
5. Upper Right Cover
Open this cover when installing the Inter-
change Unit.
6. Right Cover
Open this cover when removing the mis-
fed paper or installing options.
7. Bypass Tray
Use to print on thick paper, OHP trans-
parencies, custom size paper, as well as
plain paper. Up to 100 sheets of plain pa-
per can be loaded.
8. Bypass Tray Extension
Pull out this extension to load paper
longer than A4/letter Lin the Bypass
Tray.
9. Tray 1
Up to 250 sheets of plain paper can be
loaded.

Exterior: Rear View
1. Controller Board
Slide this out when installing the options
such as a Memory Unit, 1394 Interface
Unit or User Account Enhance Unit.
2. Parallel Port
Use a parallel cable to connect the printer
to the host computer.
3. USB Port
Use a USB cable to connect the printer to
the host computer.
Remove USB2.0 Interface Board when
you install optional 1394 Interface Unit or
802.11b Intaerface Unit.
4. Ethernet Port
Use a network interface cable to connect
the printer to the network.
5. Interchange Unit Port
Use the Interchange Unit cable to connect
the printer to the Interchange Unit.

Ventilator and Dustproof Filter (A)
The ventilator helps to keep the compo-
nents inside the printer from overheat-
ing. Do not block the ventilator as it may
cause a printer malfunction due to over-
heating. A dustproof filter is set inside.

(B)/Ozoneproof Filter
The ventilator helps to keep the compo-
nents inside the printer from overheat-
ing. Do not block the ventilator as it may
cause a printer malfunction due to over-
heating. A dustproof filter and an
ozoneproof filter are set in a cartridge in-

8. Power Port
Connect the power cable to this port and
the other cable end to the wall outlet.
9. Ventilator
The ventilator helps to keep the compo-

cause a printer malfunction due to over-
heating.
10. Left Cover
Open this cover when replacing the de-
velopment unit.

1. Fusing Unit
Fuses the image on paper.
When "Replace Fusing Unit" appears on
the panel display, replace this unit.
2. Fuser Oil Unit
Attach to the fusing unit.
When "Replace Fuser Oil Unit" appears
on the panel display, replace this unit.
3. Photoconductor Unit
Includes a photoconductor belt that pro-
duces images. When "Replace PCU" ap-
pears on the panel display, replace this
unit.
4. Waste Toner Bottle 2
Collects wasted toner.
When "Waste Toner 2 is almost full" or
"Replace Waste Toner Bottle 2" appears
on the panel display, replace the waste
toner bottle 2 with a new one.
5. Waste Toner Bottle 1
Collects wasted toner.
When "Waste Toner 1 is almost full" or
"Replace Waste Toner Bottle 1" appears
on the panel display, replace the waste
toner bottle 1 with a new one.
6. Development Unit
From the top, set the development unit in
the order of black, yellow, cyan and ma-
genta.
When "Replace (color) development
unit" appears on the panel display, re-
place the color of the unit.
7. Toner Cartridge
From the top, set the toner cartridge in
the order of black, yellow, cyan and ma-
genta.
When "Add Toner (color)" appears on the
panel display, replace the color of the
toner cartridge.

mode.

Blinks while the printer is receiving data
from a computer. Stays on when there is
data to be printed.

dicated color when the following
message appears on the panel dis-

From the top, the toner cartridges
are installed in the order of black,
yellow, cyan, and magenta.

the color you want to replace.
You can remove all four cartridges
in the same way.
Important
❒Do not shake the removed toner
cartridge. The remaining toner
might scatter.
