Offering a cost per page that is among the lowest for competitive models
tested to date, the Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL color laser printer demonstrated
an impressive performance during its 100,000-impression BLI evaluation,
completing the two-month test with no service calls and no paper jams
recorded, for a awless reliability performance.
Using four-drum, single-pass technology to output at 40 ppm in both black and
color, the Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL produces very good color output due in
part to Ricoh’s PxP Toner technology; the chemically-grown toner particles are
smaller and more uniform in size, which provides crisp, clear text, improved
denition and sharper images. Moreover, over the course of the two-month
test, the color output of this unit remained very consistent throughout the
test. Black output was also very good. BLI test technicians cited crisp, cleanly

 Web Image Monitor, the embedded Web page, offers device status infor-

SmartDeviceMonitor For Admin – Device Discovery
 Web SmartDeviceMonitor is available for free download from the Ricoh Web
site. Web SmartDeviceMonitor allows administrators to discover, monitor
and manage Ricoh and compatible non-Ricoh devices on the network via a
standard Web browser without needing to install additional software.
 Users can receive pop-up messages via the SmartDeviceMonitor utility. The
“Extended Features” selection of SmartDeviceMonitor enables the user to
specify the conditions to monitor and when notication via pop-up windows
is desired. The selections available are: “Notify of printout/data transmis-
sion,” which launches a pop-up window whenever a print job is sent and
upon completion of a job; “Notify of printout/data transmission cancella-
tion” and “Notify when errors occur while printing.”
 Users can also choose to receive e-mail alerts for specied error conditions
and events; a wide variety of events can be selected for up to four specied
users via the embedded Web page.

 During installation, the SmartDeviceMonitor utility automatically locates
the device and displays the IP address, allowing the administrator to simply
select it to create the port, and automatically detects the installed hard-
ware when using the PCL and RPCS drivers. For the Adobe PostScript driver,
the congured options must be manually specied by the user.
 The Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL ships with four print drivers (a proprietary
Ricoh RPCS, Adobe PostScript 3, PCL 5c and PCL 6). The drivers are well laid
out and easy to use on the Windows XP platform tested and offer a feature
set typical of most color printers.
 The PCL and RPCS drivers are very graphical and offer most of the commonly
used selections on the main screen. The Adobe PostScript driver, as would be
expected, is typical of PostScript drivers in that users must access additional
tabs to make common print job selections.
 Although not uncommon, the appearance and layout of the PCL, Adobe Post-
Script and RPCS drivers differ.
 The RPCS driver allows users to save print driver selections under custom
icons for one-click selection of commonly used print settings.
 The RPCS driver has a print quality summary feature that allows the user
to view all print quality selections before sending a job to the printer. This
feature allows the user to conrm the print quality selections by selecting
the Print Quality Summary tab in the driver.
 No problems were experienced with any of the test les used in the applica-
tions compatibility tests. Units are tested for compatibility on the Windows
XP platform with Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft
Excel 2000, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Acrobat
6.0 using 25 application test les, which contain text, graphics, halftone
images, tables, etc., enabling BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage,
le processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.

Color Print Quality VERY GOOD
 Photographic images were rated “Very Good;” BLI technicians noted realis-
tic colors in images, though skin tones exhibited a slight yellow undertone.
Business graphics were also very good, with vibrant and eye-catching colors
in graphs and charts.
Black Print Quality VERY GOOD
 Black output produced by the Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL was very good over-
all; text was excellent, with crisp and cleanly formed characters, even at
6-point font sizes. Line art was also produced very well; diagonal lines were
clean and straight, with no stair-stepping evident. Halftones were visible
over a very good range, though toner coverage was inconsistent in some ll
areas. Solids were also very good, with consistent toner coverage and very
good density readings.
Color Print Productivity VERY GOOD
 While overall color efciency is above average in simplex mode, color print
efciency is well above average in duplex mode from the PostScript driver.
 The unit completed BLI’s 19-page color job stream at 73.51 percent of its
rated speed when printing from the PostScript driver, which is among the
best performance of any color printer in this category. When printing from
the PCL driver, the Ricoh SP C811DN completed the color job stream at
72.39 percent of its rated engine speed.
 First-print times for the PowerPoint, TIFF and JPEG les used in testing are
competitive to faster than average compared to competitive color models
tested.
Black Print Productivity VERY GOOD
 While overall monochrome efciency is competitive in simplex mode, mono-
chrome print efciency is well above average in duplex mode from the Post-
Script driver.
 The Ricoh SP C811DN completed BLI’s 19-page monochrome job stream at
80.55 percent of its rated speed when printing from the PostScript driver,

which is the second best performance of any color printer in this category.
When printing from the PCL driver, the Ricoh SP C811DN completed the
monochrome job stream at 83.11 percent of its rated engine speed.
 First-print times for the Word and PDF les used in testing are competitive
with the average compared to competitive color models tested.
 The control panel consists of a four-line 108-character graphical LCD display,
12 hard keys (Online, Menu, Job Reset, Escape, OK, up, down, right and left
directional arrows, as well as three keys for making menu selections) and
three LED indicators (Power, Alert and Data). The control panel display also
has a convenient toner gauge to indicate the approximate amount of toner
remaining in each cartridge.
 Two drivers are loaded by default using the Ricoh quick-install routine, the
RPCS driver and the PCL 6 driver, as well as SmartDeviceMonitor for Client;
however, users must perform separate installations to install the Adobe
PostScript 3 driver or SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin.
 Specifying job requirements from the well-designed print drivers was easy.
 Further enhancing ease of use is the excellent feedback on device and print
job status provided by the SmartDeviceMonitor utility.
 Replacing the toner cartridges and drums in the Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL is
a clean and straightforward procedure for and procedures for loading paper
and removing misfeeds are very simple.

 The standard paper capacity of the Ricoh SP C811DN, at 3,200 sheets, is
more than twice the average when compared to the average for color print-
ers in this class; when compared to the average maximum paper capacity
for the group, it is competitive.
 The Ricoh SP C811Dn supports up to 140-lb index through the bypass tray,
which is heavier stock than can be supported by many printers in this cat-
egory.
 Although the standard memory capacity, at 512 MB (nonexpandable), is
above average when compared to single-pass printers in this class, some
printers in this class offer a higher maximum memory capacity.
 A standard 40-GB hard drive is included for added storage functionality.
 The Ricoh Acio SP C811DN also includes a PictBridge connection for direct
printing of photographic images from compatible digital cameras.
 A choice of optional nishers is available for the SP C811DN, including a
1,000-sheet booklet nisher that staples up to 50 sheets per set and a 3,000-
sheet stapler/stacker that staples up to 50 sheets per set. An optional 2-/3-
hole punch kit is also available for the booklet nisher.
 With the purchase of the optional IS300e Image Scanner, the Ricoh Acio SP
C811DN-DL offers color and monochrome scanning and convenience copying.
The IS300e includes a 50-sheet ADF and allows color and monochrome scan
to e-mail with LDAP support, scan to folder with SMB/FTP capability, scan
to print via USB and network connections, and TWAIN scanning via USB and
network connections.
 The Locked Print option allows users to send a print job directly to the
printer memory. The print job can be printed only after the user types a PIN
into the printer control panel. After the job is printed, the job is no longer
displayed on the control panel but it is still held in the printer memory; the
job can only be deleted using the password or by powering off the printer.
 The Ricoh SP C811DN can help prevent unauthorized copying of printed
documents by embedding a masking pattern that appears if a document is
scanned or printed on enabled Ricoh devices.
 Using SmartDeviceMonitor, the administrator can lock control panel menus
to prevent unauthorized changes to the device conguration.

 SmartDeviceMonitor encrypts data sent to the printer via Internet Printing
Protocol (IPP) with Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS)
technology, thus protecting data transmission from being intercepted by
outside sources.
 The Network Data Protection Unit enables data encryption so that only
the SP C811DN-DL can properly recreate the data stream, guarding against
information theft. The SP C811DN-DL also supports SNMP v3 authentication
and data encryption, as well as, the ability to password protect PDF Direct
Print functionality.
 The optional DataOverwriteSecurity System automatically overwrites image
data three times, conforming to National Security Agency (NSA) methods for
managing sensitive information.
 The tested yields for the black and color toner cartridges are higher than
the average for tested printers in this class.
 The Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL is priced competitively with the average for
competitive ledger-size network-ready single-pass color printers with simi-
lar standard features (i.e., printers with a color speed from 35 to 45 ppm,
automatic duplexing and a standard hard drive). Its cost per page for black
and color output is among the lowest for competitive printers tested.

Test Environment
The product has been tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot test lab, in an environment
monitored by a Honeywell Temp/RH chart recorder, which replicates typical ofce
conditions.
Test Equipment
BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2000 servers, Windows XP work-
stations, 10/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.
Test Duration
Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability
test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly
volume, with daily volumes evenly divided over the course of the test.
Tested Configuration
Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL model.
Test Procedures
The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s
proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures. In addition to a
number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry standard Katun test
original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to
evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation, color print
quality is tested using the ANSI standard IT8 Color Test Target, which is read using
the Minolta CM503I Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY
Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured
using an X-Rite 428 Densitometer.

SmartDeviceMonitor comes in two versions—SmartDevic-
eMonitor for Admin and SmartDeviceMonitor for Client—and
allows administrators to discover, manage and create groups
of printers and multifunction products on the network. The
SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin utility will search the network
by IP/SPX protocol and locate all of the printers on the net-
work. Once the devices are located, the administrator can
double-click on any device to access a window showing the
status of that device. There are three tabs displayed—Status,
Conguration and Job History—and the displays are the same
as with the SmartDeviceMonitor Client version. Status dis-
plays the current status of the device; Conguration gives
the administrator selections to display information about the
device, the trays available and the amount of paper in each
of the tray, as well as the options the device supports; System
Info displays basic system information about the device; Print
Language displays the resident PDL on the device; and Net-
work I/F displays the IPX or IP information of the device. Job
History displays a history of print jobs printed on the device.
More information is provided for Ricoh and compatible than
for other vendors’ output devices. For example, other ven-
dors’ products will be identied, but the status information
will not be as detailed as with Ricoh products.
When using SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin, the administrator
can create groups of printers, lock the control panel, cong-
ure printer settings and manage the Ricoh Acio SP C811DN, as
well as any other compatible device on the network—printer

mode settings can also be adjusted, toner supply can be moni-
tored and job histories can be viewed.
SmartDeviceMonitor for Client, which automatically creates
the printer port on the client workstation, allows monitoring
of the device and provides feedback regarding print job status
and error and/or warning conditions to users. Print log details
are accessible from SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin, SmartDe-
viceMonitor for Client (only the user’s own print log) and the
embedded Web page of the Acio SP C811DN. The Acio SP
C811DN has the capability to have all of the print jobs stored
on the hard drive and then spooled to the engine, in much the
same way a print server would in a larger environment. In the
case where there are a large number of users directly print-
ing to the unit, this capability regulates data ow, prevent-
ing bottlenecking of multiple print jobs sent to the unit. The
administrator can view this spool le and delete jobs from the
hard drive.
SmartDeviceMonitor For Client
Feedback to the workstation is also provided by the Smart-
DeviceMonitor utility, provided it has been installed on the
workstation. The user can congure the utility to send pop-
up messages and specify whether or not to start the utility
at all. The user can congure the SmartDeviceMonitor utility
to function with only one or all of the Acio SP C811DN-DL

Features” selection of SmartDeviceMonitor enables the user
to specify the conditions to monitor and when notication
via pop-up windows is desired. The selections available are:
“Notify of printout/data transmission,” which launches a pop-
up window whenever a print job is sent and upon completion
of a job; “Notify of printout/data transmission cancellation”
and “Notify when errors occur while printing.”
When SmartDeviceMonitor is launched, its icon appears on the
taskbar tray. When the user right-clicks on the icon, the menu
shows each of the drivers associated with SmartDeviceMonitor.
If the user selects one of the drivers, the Properties screen for
that driver will open. There are three tabs for the user to select
from: the Status tab, which shows a graphical representation
of the device and its options, along with the current status of
the device; the Conguration tab, which graphically displays
the conguration of the device (Input Tray, Output Tray, Toner,
Function, Option, System, Printer Language and Network I/F)
as icons that, when selected, display a detailed description
of the feature (such as the amount of toner remaining in the
cartridge); the Job History tab, which lists completed print
jobs and the status of pending print jobs (SmartDeviceMonitor
Client lists jobs for the current user, while the Admin version
lists jobs for all users). The display shows User Name, Docu-
ment Name, Status, Pages, Started At (date and time) and
User ID.
Embedded Web page:
Yes. The Ricoh Acio SP C811DN’s embedded Web page offers
device status information, including paper size and a gauge
representing the amount of paper in each drawer, a toner
gauge and temporary job history, as well as a listing of cur-
rent settings and error messages. The Administrator mode of
the embedded Web page is password-protected, so that only
authorized users can make changes to the device.
Consumables monitoring:
Yes, via the embedded Web page (Web Image Monitor) or
SmartDeviceMonitor. The user or administrator can view
remaining life of consumables, which includes a gauge repre-
senting the approximate percentage of toner remaining and
the size and approximate amount of paper in each drawer.

Color print quality is tested using the ANSI standard IT8 Color
Test Target with print samples taken at the beginning, mid-
point and end of test period. Samples are also taken when
any major component on the device is changed. The ANSI IT8
Color Test Target is read using the Minolta CM503I Spectropho-
tometer and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chroma-
ticity Diagram. The Ricoh Acio SP C811DN-DL uses an internal
automatic color calibration, as well as a manual color calibra-
tion procedure.
The SP C811DN-DL produced a large gamut for a laser-
based color printer. The size of the gamut did not show any
noticeable change over the test period and color production
remained very consistent. A group of test images printed at
the beginning of the test period did not display any noticeable
changes from the same group of images printed at the end of
the test period.
The SP C811DN-DL produced bright colors that were not overly
saturated, resulting in vibrant and eye-catching colors in
charts and graphs, though some of the ner details were lack-
ing. Photographic images were characterized by natural-look-
ing colors, though skin tones had a slight reddish undertone.
As such, the unit should meet the needs of any general ofce
color user.
