station. These components include the GX-2009 s case, alligator and
belt clips, sensor retainer, sensor retainer gasket, sensor cover retainer,
scrubberfilters, sensorcover, sensors, LCD, controlbuttons, printed
circuit boards, alarm LED arrays, buzzer, vibrator, batteries, and charging
station.

Case
The GX-2009 s sturdy, high-impact plastic c ase is radio frequency (RF)
re sis tant, and is s uitable fo r us e in many enviro nmental c o nditio ns,
indoors and out. The unit is dust proof and water resistant. Rubber
overmolded surfaces on much of the case help protect it from impact
damag e and aid in ho lding the ins trume nt in yo ur hand.
A c lear plastic window thro ugh whic h the LCD c an b e viewed is lo c ated o n
the front of the case. Three brass charging contacts that are used when
the GX-2009 is placed in the charging station are on the back of the case.
Fo ur se nso r diffusio n po rts are lo c ated o n the b otto m o f the c ase. The
po rts are labe lle d as fo llo ws fro m left to right: H
2 S, CO, HC, and O 2 . Three
frosted windows, one on the left side, one of the rightside, and one on
top, c over alarm LED arrays. There are two buzzer sound openings, one
on the front below the LCD and one on the top behind the top LED array.
An IR (infrared) c o mmunic atio n p o rt is lo c ate d o n the to p left s ide whic h is
used to transfer information when the instrument is used with one of the
c alibratio n o r do wnlo ading ac c es so ries .
There are three threaded inserts on the back of the case. These are used
to mo unt the alligato r c lip o r the o ptio nal b elt c lip.

The GX- 2009 is availab le with two types o f c lips, the s tand ard alligato r
c lip and the o p tio nal be lt c lip. Bo th are illus trate d in Figure 3.
The alligator clip can be used to attach the GX-2009 to clothing or a belt.

Sensor Retainer/Sensor Retainer Gasket/
Sensor Cover Retainer
The sensorretainerholds the gas sensors in place and snaps onto the
bottom of the case. It has 4 diffusion ports, one for each sensor, and has
re c e s s e d are as in it fo r the c harc o al filte r, and the H
2 S re mo val filte rs .
It also has indexing features fo r the se nso r retainer gasket. The se nso r
retainergasket seats onto the sensorretainerand seals the interface
between the sensor retainer, sensor cover, and sensor cover retainer. The
sensorcoverretainersnaps onto the sensorretainer. Two screws secure
the se ns o r retaine r and the se nso r c o ver retaine r to the c ase.
Scrubber Filters/Sensor Cover
Charcoal Filter Disk
The c harc o al filte r disk is lo c ate d in the CO se no r diffusio n po rt o f the
sensor retainer. It is black, has a woven texture, and is impregnated with
an H
2 S absorbing material. It fits into a recessed area of that port. The CO
sensorwillrespond if exposed to H
2
S and certain hydrocarbon gasses.

The charcoal filterscrubs these gasses out of the gas sampled to avoid
false CO readings. The H
2 S absorbing material added to the charcoal filter
extends it s H
2
S ab s o rb ing life . If fals e CO re ading s are no tic e d, e s p e c ially
high readings in the presence of H
2
S, change the charcoalfilterdisk.

2 S Removal Filter Disks

Sensor Cover
The sensor cover is white and protects the scrubberfilters and sensors
from dust and water. It fits on the sensor retainer gasket over all the
sensordiffusion ports and is secured in place by the sensorcoverretainer.
If the se nso r c o ve r be c o me s dirty, the re spo nse time and ac c urac y o f the
GX-2009 will be affec ted. Replace the sensor c over if it appears dirty.
Sensors
The GX-2009 use s fo ur se nso rs to mo nito r c o mbustible gase s, O
2
, CO,
and H
2
S simultaneously. The sensors are protected from the environment
by the sensor cover which allows ambient air to diffuse to the sensors.
The sensors use different detection principles, as described below.
Combustible Gas (LEL) Sensor
The combustible gas sensor detects combustible gas and vapors in the
LEL(lowerexplosive limit) range with a catalytic element. A sintered metal
flame arrestorcovers the element and allows ambient airto diffuse into
the sensor. The reaction of gas with oxygen onthe catalyst causes a
change in the resistance of the element which affects the current flowing
thro ug h it. The c urre nt is amp lifie d b y the GX- 20 09 s c irc uitry, c o nve rte d
to a measurement of combustible gas concentration, and displayed on
the LCD.
CAUTION : Do no t expo se the c o mbustible senso r to high c o nc entratio ns
of combustible gas such as that from a butane lighter. Exposure
to high c o nc entratio ns o f c o mbustible gas may adve rse ly affec t
the performance of the sensor.

Oxygen (O
2 ) Se nso r
The O
2 senso r is a galvanic type sens o r. A membrane c o vers the c e ll
and allo ws gas to diffuse into the c ell at a rate pro po rtio nal to the partial
pressure of oxygen. The oxygen reacts in the cell and produces a voltage
proportionalto the concentrationof oxygen. The voltage is measured by
the GX-2009 s c irc uitry, c o nverted to a measurement o f gas c o nc entration,
and displayed on the LCD.
CO and H
2
S Sensors
The CO and H
2 S s enso rs are e lec tro c hemic al s enso rs that c o nsist of
two precious metalelectrodes in an acid electrolyte. A gas permeable
membrane covers the sensor face and allows gas to diffuse into the
elec tro lyte. The gas reac ts in the se ns o r and pro duc e s a c urrent
proportionalto the concentrationof the target gas. The currentis
amplified by the GX-2009 s circuitry, converted to a measurement of gas
c o nc e ntratio n, and displaye d o n the LCD.
LCD
The LCD (liquid c rystal display) is visible thro ug h the GX-2009 s fro nt
window. Target gas concentrations, the time, battery condition, and alarm
indications are displayed on the LCD. When eitherof the control buttons
are pressed, the LCDbacklightcomes on for30 seconds.
Control Buttons
Two c o ntro l b utto ns are lo c ate d be lo w the display o n either s ide o f the
frontbuzzeropening. The AIR buttonis on the leftand the POWER MODE
button is on the right. The func tio ns performed by the c o ntrol buttons are

Printed Circ uit Boards
The p rimary func tio n o f the GX-2009 s printed c irc uit bo ards is to amplify
the signal se nt to the m fro m the fo ur gas s enso rs, c o nve rt the signal to a
measurement of gas conc entration, display the gas concentration on the
LCD, store peak, STEL, and TWA readings, and activate the alarm circuit
if an alarm po int has b ee n reac he d. The y mo nito r batte ry leve l, battery
failure, and sensor failure. They also control the GX-2009 s time function
and various operating modes.
Alarm LED Arrays
Three red alarm LED (light emitting diode) arrays are visible through
frosted plastic lenses in the case. One is on the top, one on the left side,
one on the right side of the case. The alarm LED arrays alert you to gas,
lo w b atte ry, and failure alarms .
Buzzer & Vibrato r
A solid-state electronic buzzer is mounted inside the GX-2009 s case. The
buzzer sounds for gas alarms, failure alarms, and as an indicator during
normal use of the GX-2009 s various operating modes.
A vibrating motor inside the GX-2009 case vibrates for gas alarms and as
an indicator during normal use of the GX-2009 s various operating modes.
NiMH Batte rie s
Two NiMH (nic ke l me tal hyd rid e) b atte rie s , e ac h with an inte g ral ho lde r,
supply 2.4 vo lts to po we r the GX- 2009. The batte ries will run the unit
fo r up to 20 ho urs when no alarms have be en ac tivated during that time
period. The batteries are designed to be charged while in the GX-2009
with the GX-2009 Charging Station. The batteries should not be removed
from the GX-2009 unless they need to be replaced because they will
no lo ng e r ho ld a c harg e. The b atte ry ic o n in the lo we r le ft c o rne r o f the
LCD shows the charge remaining in the batteries. See Recharging the

Charging Station
The GX-2009 s NiMH batteries are charged with the GX-2009 Charging
Statio n. There are two types of c harging statio ns available, the standard
AC powered charging station and the optional vehicle plug DC powered
charging station.
AC Powered Charging Station
The s tand ard AC p o we re d c harg ing s tatio n is availab le in c o nfig uratio ns
that charge from one to five instruments at a time. The single instrument
charging station consists of one instrument charging base and an AC
adapter. The AC adapter for the standard charging station plugs into a
115 VAC wall outlet and connects to the charging station with a jack on
the end of a five foot DC output cable. The AC adapter will also work for
100 VAC or 220 VAC if an appropriate plug adapter is provided. The single
instrument AC charging station is shown in Figure 4.

Charging stations for more than one instrument inc lude additional
chargers that are attached to each other. The same AC adapter can power
up to a maximum o f 5 c harging bases. The two instrument c harging
statio n is sho wn in Figure 5, and the five ins trument statio n is s ho wn in
Fig ure 6.

DC Powered Charging Station
An o p tio nal DC p o we re d s ing le ins trume nt c harg ing s tatio n is availab le
with a vehicle plug 12 VDC adapter. The DC adapter for the charging
statio n c an o nly p ro vide e no ug h po we r to c harge o ne instrument at a
time, s o the DC po we re d c harging statio n is o nly available as a sing le
instrument c harging station. It uses the same c harging base as the AC
powered c harging station.

This section explains how to start up the GX-2009 and get it ready for
operation.
Start-up Procedure
1. Press and briefly hold down the POWER MODE button. The backlight
will turn on and all the display segments will turn on. Release the
button when yo u hear a beep.
2. The vibrator vibrates and the alarm lights flash momentarily.
3. If Cal. Limit Display is turned on, the screen that appears next
depends o n how Cal. Limit Che c k is set. These parameters and
the Auto Ze ro Adjus tme nt paramete r mentio ne d in step number 8
belo w c annot be set using the GX-2009 s instrument menus, but are
se t using the Co nfiguratio n Pro gram. Se e the GX- 2009 Co nfiguratio n
Program Operator s Manual for information regarding changing various
ins trume nt parame te rs that are no t availab le fo r adjus tme nt in the
instrument s operating mo des.
If the unit is due fo r c alibratio n and Cal. Limit Che c k is s e t to
Co nfirm to us e, the n the fo llo wing s c re e n dis plays .
Start Up
The alarm LED s and b uz ze r will puls e s e ve ral time s . Afte r this , p re s s
and release the POWER MODE button. You will hear a beep and
startup sequence will continue.
If the unit is due fo r c alib ratio n and Cal. Limit Che c k is s et to Can t
use, then the following screen displays.
The alarm LED s and b uz ze r will p uls e s eve ral time s . This s c re e n will
the n re main o n the display until the unit is turned o ff. The GX-2009
c anno t b e us ed until a c o mplete c alib ratio n has b een perfo rme d

This screen displays the current date and time.
5. The Battery Voltage/Alarm Pattern Screen appears fora few seconds.
The screen displays the current battery voltage and the alarm
pattern. AL -- H indicates latching alarms and AL -- A indicates self-
resetting alarms. See Alarm Logic/Resetting Alarms on page 27 for a
de s c riptio n o f latc hing and s e lf- re s e tting alarms .

If you wish to continue, press and release the POWER MODE button to
acknowledge the failure. The gas reading for the failed sensor will be
replaced by - - - . Replace the failed sensor as soon as possible.
8. If Auto Z e ro Ad jus tm e nt is s e t to On, the n the GX-2009 will pe rfo rm an
automatic fresh air adjustment.
If the fre sh air adjus tment is suc c ess ful, the unit will pro c eed to No rmal
Mode. If one or more of the sensors fails the fresh air adjustment,
the dis play will ind ic ate whic h s e ns o r o r s e ns o rs faile d. If a failure
occurs, press and release the POWER MODE button to proceed to
NormalMode. The gas reading forthe failed sensororsensors willbe
replaced by - - - . Replace any sensors that fail the automatic fresh air
adjustment as soon as possible.
WARNING : If the Auto Zero Adjustment feature is turned on, make
sure that you start-up the GX-2009 in a known fresh air
environment, an environment free of combustible or toxic
gasses and of normaloxygen content, 20.9%. If you do
not start-up the unit in a fresh air environment, the fresh
air adjustment will not be accurate.
9. The GX-2009 is now operating in Measuring Mode and monitoring for
gas. The Normal Operation Screen appears.

Perfo rming a Fresh Air Adjustment
Befo re using the GX-2009, set the fre sh air reading. Pe rfo rming this
adjustment ensures ac curate gas readings in the monitoring environment
as lo ng as the c alibratio n is c urre nt.
1. Find a fresh-air environment. This is an environment free of toxic or
c o mbus tib le gasse s and o f no rmal o xygen c o ntent (20.9% ).

2. With the unit o n and in the No rmal Operatio n Sc reen, press and ho ld
the AIR butto n. The LCD dis plays the fo llo wing s c re en pro mpting yo u
to keep pressing the AIR button.
3. Afte r a fe w s e c o nds the LCD dis plays the fo llo wing s c re e n p ro mpting
you to release the AIR button.
4. The unit will take a few sec o nds to adjust the fresh air readings, then
re turn to the No rmal Op e ratio n S c re e n.

1. Pres s and ho ld the POWER MODE butto n fo r abo ut three sec o nds to
turn o ff the unit. The b uzzer will s o und and the LCD bac k light will turn
on.
2. Release the button when the LCD is blank. The unit is off.
