Readandunderstandallinstructionsbeforeinstallingandtensioningstuds
4.1MachinePreparation
Theflangetobetensionedmustbefullyclosedpriortopositioningofstudsintheflanges.
Turningtheshaftsoftheturbineandthegeneratorarenotrequired,butmaybeuseful.Also,it
willbeadvantageoustoremoveasmanyobstructionsaspossiblefromtheflangearea,suchas
speedprobes,shippingplates,andconduit.
4.2Hardware–Balance
Hardwareissuppliedasweightbalancedsets
StudsandNutsareinterchangeablewithinsets
Donotintermixsets
Saveweightcertificationsuppliedwitheachsetforthepurchaseofspares
4.3Tensioner–CareandHandling
Whennotinuse,thetensionershallbemaintainedinacleanenvironmentandallcaps
andplugsforhydraulicopeningsandfittingsmustbeinplace.
UseISO32gradeoil.
Wheninuse,thetensionershallbeprotectedfromsandandgrit.
Longtermstorage–coattensionerwithoil,returntooriginalcontainer,sealcontainer
andprotectfrommoisture.

5.1NutPreparation
Fornewinstallations,thenutsshouldcomesealedfromthefactoryandwillneednocleaning.
Previouslyinstallednutsrequirecleaning:asfollows:Wirebrushusingapetroleumbased
solventtoremoveanyforeignmaterialontheexternalsurfacesandthreads.
Ifpreviousinstallationsemployedathread‐lockingcompound,whichwillbevisibleasagrayish‐
greenresidue,removeasmuchofthiscompoundaspossible.
Donotapplythreadlubricantstothethreads.
Finishthecleaningprocessbyrinsinginavolatilesolventsuchasacetoneandallowtodry.

Fornewinstallations,thestudsshouldcomesealedfromthefactoryandwillneednocleaning
5.2.1StudCleaning‐OldInstallations
Previouslyinstalledstudsmayrequirecleaning.Cleanconicalthreadsshouldhaveabrightand
shinyappearance.
Ifcleaningisrequired,followthesesteps:
1. Blowoutthethreadswithcompressedairtoremoveloosedebrisanddryconical
threads.Donotapplyasolventorothercleaningsolutiontothethreadsasthismaychemically
attackthestud.
2. UseStudCleaningKit,GT‐4253orasimilar1"diameterBrasspowerbrush.

3. Insertthebrushintoanelectricdrillandsetdrilltoruninacounterclockwisedirection
athighspeed.
4. Workthedrillinacircularmotionwhilemovingthebrushinandouttocleanallofthe
threads.Trynottoholdthebrushinoneplacetoolong,soasnottoremovethestud's
protectivecoating.
5. Blowoutthethreadswithcompressedairtoremovelooseneddebris.
6. Visuallyinspectthreadsforcleanliness.Threadsshouldbebrightandshiny.
7. Repeatifanydirtcanbeseeninthethreads.
8. Inspectthreadsforanydamagethatmayhavebeencausedbypreviousinstallation.
Donotapplythreadlubricantstothethreads.

configuration.Holdfemalepartsecurelywhentighteningsoastopreventdamagetoadjacent
tubing.Iffittingleaks,firsttryretighteningasneeded.Ifleakingcontinuesthendisassemble
andcheckforscratchesordebrisontheseatingconicalsurfaces.Cleanasrequired.Replace
plasticcapswhenfinishedwithtooling.
7.2Pump
Thepumpkitisshippedfullofhydraulicoil.Thepumpreservoircapissealedforshipment.To
useturncaptotheventposition.Topreventoilspillageclosecapwhennotinuse,during
storageandshipment.LostoilshouldbereplacedwithEnerpacHydraulicOil.ISO32.Mineral
Oilmaybesubstituted,ifnecessary.
7.3BleedingHydraulicSystem
FollowthetensionerassemblyinstructionsofSection8.0
TOAVOIDFAILURE,ENSURESAFETYANDPROPEROPERATIONTHETENSIONERASSEMBLY
MUSTBEMOUNTEDONTHESTUDBEFOREBLEEDINGTHESYSTEMANDTENSIONINGBEGINS.
ThetensionerhasfourportsseeFig.3,oneforpressurizing,twoforbleedingthesystemanda
fourthpressurereliefport.Tofacilitatebleeding,startbyfirstmountingthetensioneratthe9
o’clockstudposition,whichwillcriticallyplacethebleedportsintheiruppermostposition.In
addition,makesurethatthepumpisalwayssituatedbelowthetensionerassembly.
Thepullertoolisequippedwith5/8”[16mm]hexconedstembleederfittingsinstalledinthe
bleederports.Withthesetwofittingsloosenedsimultaneously,strokethepumprepeatedly
untilthestreamsofoilexitingthetoolfromeachportarefreeofair,thenretightenthefittings.
Note:Thehoseisstiff;useofthistoolingcanbesimplifiedbytemporarilymountingthepuller
toolononestudpriortofinaltighteningoffittings.Thiswillreducethetendencyforthe
fittingstoloosenduringuse.

procedurewilleaseassemblyandassurepositivematingofthethreadsbeforetightening.
RefertoTensionerAssemblydrawingandFigure3forviewsofthetensionertoflange
mounting.Alltensioningwillbeperformedonthecouplingsideoftheflangeconnections.
1. Cleanpullerscrewandcheckforanydebrisanddents.
2. Pullerscrewshouldbefreetorotateandmovebackandforth.
3. Seambetweencylindersclosedtightly.
4. Inspecttensionerguardforanysignsofdamage.Bentguardsshouldbereplaced.Also,
besuretherubberpadisinplaceontheendoftheguard,ifmissing,replace.
Thisassemblyhasthefollowingfeatures,whichshouldmakestudtensioningsafeandeasy:
Thesafetycageisintegral(bolted)tothepullertool
Thehydraulicpistonisspringloadedtoretract
Assemblysequenceisasfollows:
1. Placethespannerringoverthepullerscrewonthetensioner.
2. Applyalightcoatofcleanturbineoiloraspraylubricanttothepullerscrew.Donotuse
“NeverSeize”ontheconicalthreads.
3. Placeandholdthetensionerassemblyovertheendofthestudtobetightened.See
photos3&4.
4. Holdthestudsteadywitha1/2”hexkeywrenchandlightlytightenthepullerscrewinto
theconicalthreadofthestudwithawrench.
5. Slidethepullerscrewintothetaperedthreadofthestudandhandtighten.Besurenot
tocrossthreadassembly.
6. Placethespannerringpinsintothecylindricalnutlocatedonthestud.
7. AtthispointtheTensionerAssemblyMUSTBEFREETOROTATE,thepullerscrewmust
betightinthestud.
Ifthepullertoolisnotfreetorotatewhenthepullerscrewistightthen,either(1)thestudis
notproperlypositionedintheflangeandthenutsmustberepositionedsothatthestudis
shiftedslightlymoreonthepullertoolside,or(2)Thetensionerisdamagedandmustbe
returnedforrepair.

Repositioningthestudcanbedoneasfollows:
1. Slightlyloosenthepullerscrew.
2. Backthenutoppositepullertooloffabout1/2turn.
3. Tightenthepullerscrewsidenuttotakeuptheslack.
4. Retightenthepullerscrewperaboveandcheckforloosenessoftool.
Note:Donotoverextendthestud.Overextensioncancausethepistontolooseitssealand
leakoil.
CAUTION
Personalinjuryandequipmentdamagecanoccurifthepullerscrewisnotsecurelyengaged
withthetaperedthreadofthestud.Properengagementisachievedwhenthepullerscrewis
tightinthestudandtheTensionerAssemblyisfreetorotate.
9.0StudPullingandTensioning
Thestudswillbetensionedintwosteps,at50%pressureandatfinalpressure.Followthe
tensioningsequenceforeachflangejointasdefinedonthedatasheetsfoundattheendofthis
manual
WARNING
ThesafetycageMUSTbeinplaceandhandskeptoutofdesignatedareasatalltimeswhenthe
tensionerispressurizedotherwisepersonalinjurycanoccur.

9.2RemovingtheTensionerfromanInstalledStud
Thetensionerremovalistoaccomplishedbythefollowssteps:
1. Releasethepullertoolpressurebyopeningthevalveonthepump(HandPumpVersion
MP‐0130).Leavethevalveopen.Thisisautomaticontheair‐operatedhydraulicpump.
2. Unscrewthepullerscrewusingawrench
3. Tappingthewrenchwithahammermaybenecessarytoloosenthepullerscrew.
4. Movethetooltothenextstud/nutassemblytobetensioned,followingthe
sequence/patternasdefinedonthesupplieddatasheets.
9.3TensioningatFinalPressure

drillingoutthenut.Riverhawkcansupplyareplacementstudandnutbasedonthe
initialweightcertificationsuppliedwiththehardwareset(seesection4.2).The
damagedtensionershouldalsobereturnedtoRiverhawkforinspectionandrepair.
