1. DEVICE IDENTIFICATION

2. INTRODUCTION
 This instruction should be regarded as part of the basic equipment of the flail mower. When the
flail mower is turned over to a different user it should be in working condition and accompanied
by this instruction manual and all other basic equipment it should possess.
 Before operating this mower the user should first completely read the instructions in this manual
and should be familiar with general safety rules.
 The flail mower has been manufactured in accordance with all safety norms.
 Adhering to the instruction manual guarantees the user full safety during operation.
 In the event of any doubts regarding starting and operation of the flail mower please contact the
manufacturer.
 This operator’s manual is an indispensable part of any machine and is intended to familiarize
future user with principles of proper operation and use of the machine as well as the risks
involved.
GENERAL WARNING
During operation of the flail mower please observe all the warnings and
safety rules which are marked with this sign in the instruction manual.
WARNING!
It is forbidden to operate the flail mower without previously reading the
instruction manual, and for it to be used by persons not authorized to drive
vehicles, especially children.

3. INTENDED USE OF THE MOWER
Light class flail mowers MIDO are designed for mulching squares, pitches, laws, pa central
reservations, roadsides and parks.
Middle class flail mowers GRINO 160/180/200/220, VINO 160/180 heavy duty class
MAMUT 250/280/300 are designed for mulching soil fertilisation aiding plants (lupinus, phacelia,
sinapis, rapeseed, field pea, rye) before tillage, as well as plant remnants like thick stalks of e.g.
corn. Machines are used for shredding of thin branches, moderately thick small scrubs and weeds.
WARNING!
It is forbidden to use the mower for purposes other than those listed in this
instruction. Using the mower for other purposes will be classified as use not
according with the intended use and could exclude the manufacturer from
responsibility from any resulting damages. The mower should be used,
serviced and repaired only by persons familiar with its characteristics and
with safety regulations. Unauthorized modification of the mower may release
the manufacturer from responsibility for any resulting malfunctions or
damages.

3.2. Construction and operation
The front-rear flail mower (Fig . 2 ) is constructed of the suspension frame (1), which is used to
connect the mower to the three point hitch, at the front and at the rear of the tractor.
Drive from the vehicle PTO shaft is transmitted through jointed telescopic shaft (2) and
intersection angle gear (6) onto driving shaft (3), and then the belt gear (5) is driven by the flail
shaft (12), on which flail knives (13) are mounted.
Clevis feet of the flail blades (cutting) functions as a safeguard of the operating elements from
overloading and damage. During operation if the value of resistance force of the obstacle exceeds
the value of the centrifugal force of the blade, the blades tilts back and avoids the obstacle.
The mowing height is regulated by adjusting the position of the copying shaft (11).
Steel skids (14) protect the machine when passing through an obstacle.
In VINO flail mower, cleaning plate (9) helps remove winding grass and dirt on the copying
shaft (11). Counter knives (10) keep the comminuted material for re-mulching. Please adjust the
position of counter knives according to mowing height – do not set below the ground level.

3.3. Equipment and spare parts
The mowers are sold with the following standard equipment:

It is possible to use shafts with similar technical parameters from different manufacturers after
consulting SaMASZ.
WARNING!
The frequency of lubrication of the articulated telescoping shaft should be
carefully adhered to. Points shown in Fig. 3,Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 should be
lubricated every 50 hours. The articulated telescoping shaft should also be
lubricated before and after longer periods of disuse.

3.3.1. Flail knives applicable in mowers MIDO, GRINO, VINO, MAMUT
In flail mowers can be used different types of flail knives (Tab. 5) depending on the purpose
and working conditions.
If found, replace any damaged or worn knives. In case of replacing cutting knives, they should
have the same weight. Admissible difference in weight should not be more than 3 g. If a single
knife requires to be replaced, the opposite one should also be replaced in order to prevent improper
balance.

4. SAFETY WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
4.1. General rules
 During operation of the mower the Regulation of the Farm Ministry and Food Economy
(Rozporządzenie Ministra Rolnictwa i Gospodarki Żywnościowej) from 12-01-1998 dealing
with safety and hygiene during the operation of tractors, machinery, tools and equipment used
for farming (Dz. U. no 12/98 poz. 51), should be observed.
 The rear or front axle of the driving tractor should be adequately loaded to maintain balance. If
necessary use rear or front wheel weights.
 The mower cannot be used if the vehicle has not been properly balanced.
 When mounting the mower on the vehicle be aware of the risk of wounding. The operator
should wear protective gloves.
 All manipulation of the hydraulic hoist control lever should be made only from the driving seat,
operating the hoist while outside the tractor is forbidden.
 In tractors with electro-hydraulic control system (EHR) the hoist is operated through a button
outside the cabin of the tractor. During operation please remain extra careful.
 Operating the mower with damaged covers is forbidden.
 Mowing can only begin after the PTO reaches optimal speed.
 The optimal speed of the PTO cannot be exceeded by more than 5%.
 There should be a safe distance between the mower and people, a minimum of 50 m. Greatest
care should be maintained on rocky terrain or during branch shredding and while working in
the vicinity of roads and streets (there is a danger of hard objects being thrown by the mower).
 Any servicing or adjusting of the mower must be done only after the engine and flail shaft have
stopped.
 The condition of blade holders must be periodically checked (loose bolt connections and wear
in mounting brackets). Any damaged or worn holders must be replaced.
 During any repair being performed while the mower is lifted on the TPH, the mower should be
secured so that it does not fall using a support or a chain.
 Prior to performing any maintenance works, assembly, disassembly and break at work set the
machine onto a stable ground and protect against unintentional shifting.
 During cleaning machine, it should be used personal protection.
 Bolts and other fasteners should be inspected on regular basis. Operating with damaged or
worn fasteners is not admissible.
WARNING!
Any maintenance or repair of the mower should be done with the tractor
engine off, the cutting body resting on the ground and all rotating parts at
rest.
WARNING! Rotating elements, such as flail knives and flail shaft still
rotate, up to several seconds, before the rotor comes into complete
standstill!
 During operation of farm machinery it is forbidden to open or remove any protective guards or
safety curtains.
 The tractor used with the mower should be equipped with a driver's cabin.
 The operator is not allowed to leave the vehicle while driving.
 Never start the mower if it is in the up position.

 Never start the mower if people or animals are in the proximity of the mower.
WARNING!
Keep the children away from the mower both in operation and standstill.
 Always comply with safety decals describing hazards, and warning signs placed on the
machine.
 Before starting the vehicle make sure that each drive is disconnected while the hydraulics
control levers are in neutral position.
 Do not let the vehicle's engine operate without any supervision. Before leaving the vehicle, turn
the engine off and take the ignition key out.
 It is forbidden to drive the mower backwards when operating.
 Never get onto the mower.
 It is forbidden to lift the mower on the vehicle 3-point linkage with the drive on and flail shaft
rotating.
 For operating and transport drive permissible slope shall be 8°.
 Do not leave farm machinery on slopes or other descents without having provided sufficient
protection against its free runaway.
 Never stand between the vehicle and the mower, unless vehicle -mower aggregate is protected
against shifting with the vehicle's parking brake.
 In the event of any break in the equipment operation, turn off the drive.
 Any inspection of mower's technical condition or adjustment may be performed when the
mower is lowered onto the ground.
 If any maintenance or adjustment works under the lifted mower are necessary, it must be
secured against falling with a support.
 If any part of the mower needs to be replaced, use only genuine spare parts according to spare
part list.
 Pay particular attention to PTO shaft guards and mower and vehicle spline shaft guards. Never
operate with damaged guards.
 Hydraulic hoses should be inspected on regular basis and if any damage is found or they expire,
replace these with new ones. Expiry period for hydraulic hose should be no longer than 5 years.
 Never use scotch tape to repair damaged hydraulic hoses.
 When connecting hydraulic hoses to vehicle hydraulic connectors make sure, that either vehicle
or mower hydraulics are pressure free.
 When servicing hydraulic assembly, always wear protective gloves and eyewear. Hydraulic oil
leaking under pressure (16 MPa) may permeate through the skin and cause its infection
thereafter. If such is experienced, immediately visit a doctor.
 The mower should be stored under roof and in manner that effectively prevents animals and
people from being injured.
 In case of a fatal failure, stop the machine's drive, turn the vehicle's engine off and take out the
ignition key. Then call for technical service, and if an accident (in this case: road accident)
occurs, respect first aid rules and contact responsible authorities.
 In order to keep the machine safe from fire, it is strongly recommended to keep it clean.

4.2. Qualifications of operator
To provide safe machine operation each person being the machine operator must meet the
following requirements:
 Operator should hold driving license, have ability to drive vehicles safely and know road traffic
rules.
 Operator must be in proper physical condition to be able to operate the machine.
 Operator must not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs and medicines, which all have
influence on vehicle driving and machine operation.
 Operator should be familiarized with this manual and follow its provisions.
 Operator should be familiar with working principles of both the vehicle and the machine, and be
able to recognize and avoid hazards resulting from operation of the aggregate.
4.3. Conditions of connecting mower with vehicle
 Prior to the mounting operation, check whether the vehicle's and the mower's hitch categories
are compatible and make sure that vehicle's hitch load is adequate for the machine aggregated.
 When mounting the machine, examine technical condition of the mower's hitch assembly.
 Use only genuine pins and cotters to mount the mower on a vehicle.
4.4. Transport
 Any changes in the position of the mower can only be done after making sure that there are no
people in the vicinity of the mower (be careful of children).
 When transporting the mower it should always be placed in the transporting position.
See point 5.3.
 During time of transport install on the mower the portable light board and the triangular safety
sign identifying a slow moving vehicle.
 Before the mower which is mounted on the tractor can be placed in the transporting position
please make sure that the power take-off is turned off and all rotating elements have come to
a complete stop.
 Driving speed should always be appropriate to road conditions and local traffic regulations.
 When driving on public roads the machine's width should not exceed 3.0 m (9'10")
(re: MAMUT 300).
 Do not exceed permissible transport speed of 30 km/h.
 It is forbidden to ride or to transport any persons or unattached elements on the machinery.
 Extra caution must be taken when making turns. Total weight and size of the machine must be
considered.

4.4.1. Placing the mower onto a transport vehicle
The carrier and the driver are responsible for safety during the transport of a mower.
All equipment and parts must be secured during transport.
The following rules should be observed so that transporting the mower on a transport vehicle
is safe:
 the mower can be lifted only in places designated for this purpose and labeled with a hook sign
(Fig. 6),

 equipment having a higher lifting capacity than the weight of the mower shown on
the nameplate should be used to hoist the mower. This also concerns the lines and chains used
to lift the mower,
 while placing the mower onto a transport vehicle non-involved persons must leave the vicinity,
 transport belts, belt suspensions, ropes cannot be damaged. Whenever damages to these parts
are spotted replace these with new ones,
 when mounting slings, chains, handles etc. always pay attention to setting the machine's center
of gravity properly (Fig. 7),
 to catch machines, pick ropes of adequate length, so that the angle between them is no greater
than 120°, and the angle between the strand and the vertical is no greater than 60°,
 the mower should be immobilized on the loading platform of the transporting vehicle so that it
cannot move.
WARNING!
The person operating the hoist is responsible for maintaining a safe
environment during lifting of the mower.

4.5. Operating elements
 Before operating the mower check the condition of the flail blades.
 Worn or damaged flail blades should be immediately replaced.
 In case of excessive machine vibrations during operation, the flail shaft should be balanced.
WARNING!
During replacement of working parts, it should be used personal protective
gloves.
4.6. The articulated telescoping shaft
 Use only articulated telescopic shafts recommended by the manufacturer of the mower.
 Before operating learn provisions found in bar manufacturer's manual placed on the bar.
 In order to operate safely use only fully technically fit, undamaged PTO shafts. Damaged PTO
shaft shall be repaired or replaced with new one.
 Before any operation make sure whether PTO rpm have proper rotational direction.
 In order to prevent PTO shaft from damages, avoid extreme most positions of the mower and
high operating angles.
4.7. Residual risk
Despite the fact that the manufacturer of the mower, SaMASZ, in order to eliminate danger
assumes responsibility for the design and construction of its mowers, some elements of risk are
unavoidable during mower operation.
Major source of risk follows performance of these operations:
 operation of mower by minors as well as not being familiarized with operator's manual,
 operation of mower by persons under influence of alcohol or other abusive substances,
 not keeping caution while transportation and shifting of mower during operation,
 transport of persons remaining on the machine,
 presence of persons and animals within the mower operation range,
 performing operations related to servicing and adjustment with engine on.

1) The danger of getting caught or pulled in by the machine
This danger occurs during changing the positioning of the mower, or working on the mower
while the rotating elements are in operation and with the guards removed.
During operation, maintenance or adjustments to the mower always use protective gloves,
covered footwear, protective clothing without any loose elements, such as belts etc. Always observe
the warnings on the mower.
2) Danger of injury, abrasion and damage of skin
Present when replacing working parts with sharp edges, cleaning the machine and removal of
any clogging and seizure. During all repairs and maintenance always wear protective gloves. At any
repair and maintenance work safety gloves shall always be worn.
3) The danger of spurting hydraulic oil
During hydraulic hose connection and disconnection to and from the tractor make certain that
the hydraulic system of the tractor and the mower are not pressurized.
When dealing with a hydraulic system wear safety glasses and protective gloves. Regularly
check the hoses of the hydraulic system.
WARNING!
Residual risk is the result of inappropriate behaviour of the operator.
4) Prohibited activity
Please bear in mind the following bans during mower’s operation:
 never unblock the mower, make any regulations or repairs of the mower while it is in motion,
 never change the order of operation and maintenance activities described in operator’s manual,
 never operate the mower when it is not in working order or has damaged safety guards,
 never get your hands and legs close to rotating parts of the mower,
 during repair and maintenance of the mower always comply with the descriptions included in
operator’s manual. Always do these activities when the tractor’s drive is off,
 before you start any activities, focus your attention on them,
 never operate the mower under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or strong medicines,
 your clothes should not be too loose, or too tight. Too loose cloth parts may be pulled in by
the rotating parts of the mower,
 the mower cannot be operated by children or by handicaped people.
When describing residual risk, the mower is treated as a machine, that up to the moment of its
putting in motion it had been designed and manufactured according to technology level actual till
the day of mower’s manufacture.
WARNING!
Despite following the specified instructions and prohibitions, residual risk is
still present.

4.7.1. Residual risk evaluation
When keeping such recommendations as:
 thorough familiarizing with operator’s manual,
 no persons remaining on the machine when operating and during drives,
 no persons remaining within the mower operation range,
 adjustment, maintenance and lubrication of the machine with engine off,
 performing repairs of the machine only by skilled persons,
 operation of the machine by persons, which are familiarized with operator’s manual,
 the machine protection against children and unauthorized personnel residual risk when
operating the mower may be limited to necessary minimum.
In the event when avoiding or eliminating professional risk resulting from
exposure to noise is not possible through use of mass safety device or work
organization, the employer (farmer):
1) makes available personal hearing safety devices if the levels of noise in
working environment exceed 80 dB.
2) makes available personal hearing safety devices and ensures they are
properly used if the levels of noise in the working environment reach or
exceed 85 dB.
4.8. Warning signs and their meanings

a) all warning signs (labels) should be clean and legible,
b) in the event of loss or damage of the sign (label) they should be replaced,
c) signs (labels) can be purchased from the manufacturer

5. OPERATION OF THE MOWER
5.1. Connecting the mower to the tractor
The mower should be connected to the tractor using the three point hitch as illustrated
in Fig. 9. The upper connector (1) and the hangers (3) of the lower ties of the tractor should be
placed on the bolts (2) of the suspension frame of the mower
Machine should be adjusted in such a way that the sliding skid is perpendicular to the ground.
After connecting the mower it should be adjusted on level ground using the upper connector (1) and
the hangers (3) of the lower ties of the tractor (Fig. 9).
After connecting the mower to the tractor check the lengthwise balance and steering ability of
the tractor-mower unit. To do this, calculate to formulas given in the chapter 8 or weigh the set, and
then drive on the scales only with front/rear axis of the tractor (the mower must be in the transport
position, lifted up). If the weight of the front/rear axle of the tractor is at least 20% of the entire
weight of the unit then steering ability has been preserved. If this is not the case the front axle
should be additionally weighed down. The same procedure should be followed when connecting the
mower to the front/rear of the tractor.

5.1.1. Preparing the mowers to connect to the front of the tractor
To prepare VINO or MIDO flail mower with rigid hitch (Fig. 10a) for operation on the
front of the tractor, dismount the hitch (4) by unscrewing bolts (6). Turn the hitch around and next
remount it and twist bolts. After the above mounting steps are done, swap plastic guards and PTO
shaft on the main gear.
To prepare MIDO, GRINO or MAMUT flail mower with mowing hitch (Fig. 10b,Fig. 11)
for operation on the front of the tractor, dismount the hitch (4) by removing pins (5) and unscrewing
bolts (6). Turn the hitch around and next remount it, twist bolts and mount pins. After the above
mounting steps are done, swap plastic guards and PTO shaft on the main gear.
