Precautions
"General
Warning:
!The voltage used must be the same as that specified on this unit. Using this prod-
uct with a higher voltage other than that which is specified is dangerous and may
result in a fire or other type of accident causing damage. SHARP will not be held
responsible for any damage resulting from use of this unit with a voltage other
than that which is specified.
!CD players use a laser pickup which can damage the eyes if viewed directly.
Do not look at the pickup, and do not touch the pickup directly.
"Volume control
The sound level at a given volume setting depends on speaker efficiency, location,
and various other factors. It is advisable to avoid exposure to high volume levels, to
avoid this do not turn the volume on to full at switch on and listen to music at moder-
ate levels.
!Please ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well ventilated area and ensure
that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free space along the sides, top and back of the
equipment.
(Unless the unit is to be wall mounted.)
!Use the unit on a firm, level surface free from vibra-
tion.
!Keep the unit away from direct sunlight, strong mag-
netic fields, excessive dust, humidity and electronic/
electrical equipment (home computers, facsimiles,
etc.) which generate electrical noise.
!Do not place anything on top of the unit.
!Do not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher than 60°C (140°F) or to
extremely low temperatures.
!If your system does not work properly, disconnect the AC power lead from the wall
socket. Plug the AC power lead back in, and then turn on your system.
!In case of an electrical storm, unplug the unit for safe-
ty.

!Hold the AC power plug by the head when removing it
from the wall socket, as pulling the lead can damage
internal wires.
!Do not remove the outer cover, as this may result
in electric shock. Refer internal service to your lo-
cal SHARP service facility.
!The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the
ventilation openings with items, such as newspapers,
tablecloths, curtains, etc.
!No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the appa-
ratus.
!Attention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of battery disposal.
!The apparatus is designed for use in moderate climate.
!This unit should only be used within the range of 5°C - 35°C (41°F - 95°F).

"Battery installation
1Remove the battery cover.
2Insert the supplied batteries according to the direction indicated in
the battery compartment.
3Replace the cover.
Precautions for battery use:
!Replace all old batteries with new ones at the same time.
!Do not mix old and new batteries.
!Remove the batteries if the unit is not to be used for long periods of time. This will
prevent potential damage due to battery leakage.
Caution:
!Do not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.).
!Installing the batteries incorrectly may cause the unit to malfunction.
Notes concerning use:
!Replace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the operation
becomes erratic. Purchase 2 "AA" size batteries (UM/SUM-3, R6, HP-7 or similar).
!Periodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the sensor on the unit
with a soft cloth.
!Exposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may interfere with operation.
Change the lighting or the direction of the unit.
!Keep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and vibrations.
"Test of the remote control
Check the remote control after verifying all the connections (see pages 7 - 8).
Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the unit.
The remote control can be used within the range shown below:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button. Does the power turn on? Now, you can enjoy the
music.
When inserting or removing the batteries, push them towards the battery termi-

Connect the wire with the grey line to the minus (-) terminal and the white wire
to the plus (+) terminal.

!Do not mistake the and , and right and left terminals of the speaker leads. (The
right speaker is placed on the right when you face the unit.)
!Do not let the bare speaker wires touch
each other.
!Do not allow any objects to fall into or to be
placed in the bass reflex ducts.
!Do not stand or sit on the speakers. You may
be injured.
!Do not short-circuit the speaker wires. If the
power is turned on, malfunction may occur.

Using antislip speaker cushions:
You can install speakers either vertically or horizontally.
Affix the cushions (supplied) to the bottom of the speakers to prevent them from slid-
ing or falling due to vibration.
"Aerial connection
Installing the AM loop aerial:
External FM or AM aerial:
Use an external FM or AM aerial if you require better reception. Consult your dealer.
Note:
When using an external AM aerial, be sure to keep the wire of the AM loop aerial
connected.
"How to close side covers
When completing the connection, close the side covers (be careful not to trap the
wires).
"Connecting the AC power lead
After checking all the connections have been made correctly, plug the AC power lead
of the unit into the wall socket.
Note:
Unplug the AC power lead from the wall socket if the unit will not be in use for a pro-
longed period of time.

Supplied FM aerial:
Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS
socket and position the FM aerial wire in the direction
where the strongest signal can be received.
Supplied AM loop aerial:
Connect the AM loop aerial wire to the AM and GND

ception. Place the AM loop aerial on a shelf, etc., or
attach it to a stand or a wall with screws (not sup-
plied).
Note:
Placing the aerial on the unit or near the AC power
lead may cause noise pickup. Place the aerial away
from the unit for better reception.

To install the main unit and speakers on the wall
CAUTION:
!Be very careful to prevent the main unit [3.7 kg (8.2 lbs.)] from falling when mount-
ing on the wall.
!Before mounting, check the wall strength. (Do not put to the veneer plaster or
whitewashed wall. The main unit or speakers may fall.) If it is not clear, consult
with a qualified service technician.
!Mounting screws are not supplied. Use appropriate ones.
!Check all mounting screws for looseness and that they are engaged in the main
unit and speakers.
!Mount the main unit and speakers on the wall with 2 screws for each.
!Select a good location. If not, accidents may occur or the unit may get damaged.
!Avoid placing on a bed, sofa, water tank, sink and hallway wall.
!To avoid accidents, fix the speaker wires to the wall. You may trip over them.
!SHARP is not responsible for accidents resulting from improper installation.
"Driving screws
Sharp designed the main unit and speakers so you may hang them on the wall.
Use proper screws (not supplied). See below for size and type.
"Installing the main unit
1Make a hole in the wall using a drill.
2Drive a wall mount plug into the hole using a hammer, until it is
flush with the wall surface.

1Fix the pattern paper and drive two screws into the wall with a dis-
tance of 160 mm (6-5/16") in between.
2Tighten the screws and remove the paper. Hook the main unit on
the screw heads and make sure it is secure.
Put the left speaker wire in the groove on the back of the main unit.

"Installing speakers Notes:
!Place speakers with the tweeter on the outside. Left and right speakers should
always be positioned symmetrically.
!There are four VESA (*) screw holes on the back of the main unit and speakers.
You can also use commercially available fittings for mounting.
!Be sure to install the product according to the method recommended by the
bracket manufacturer.
(*) VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) is an organization to promote
the standardization of digital imaging device for PCs.
1Fix the pattern paper and drive two screws into the wall with a dis-
tance of 160 mm (6-5/16") in between. When mounting vertically,
set the distance to 110 mm (4-5/16").
2Tighten the screws and remove the paper. Hook the speaker on the
screw heads and make sure it is secure.
Put the speaker wire in the groove on the back of the speaker.

!To turn the power on
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.
If the power does not turn on, check the AC power lead is plugged in properly.
Note:
When turning on the power immediately after it is set to the stand-by mode, wait a
few seconds.
!To change the display brightness (2 levels)
When the power is on, you can switch the display brightness by pressing the DIS-
PLAY button on the remote control.
!Volume control
Press the VOLUME (+ or -) button to increase or decrease the volume.
!Bass control
!Treble control
!Surround
Press the SURROUND button to allow you to enjoy music that seems to surround
you. "SURROUND" will appear.
To cancel the surround mode, press the SURROUND button again.
After use:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the power stand-by mode.

Setting the clock
By setting the unit to the correct time, you can use it not only as a clock but also for
timer playback.
In this example, the clock is set for the 24-hour (0:00) display.
[When the power is on]
Press the TIMER button.
Within 10 seconds, press the CURSOR ( or ) button to display the time.
The time display will appear for about 10 seconds.
Note:
The "CLOCK" will appear at the push of the DISPLAY button when the AC power
supply is restored after a power failure or unplugging the unit.
Readjust the clock as follows.
To readjust the clock:
Perform "Setting the clock" from the beginning.
To change the 24-hour or 12-hour display:
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.
2Press the TIMER button.
3Within 10 seconds, press the CURSOR ( or ) button to select
"CLOCK", and press the ENTER button.
4Press the CURSOR ( or ) but-
ton to select 24-hour or 12-
hour display and then press
the ENTER button.
"0:00" The 24-hour display will appear. (0:00 - 23:59)

Listening to a CD
This system can also play audio CD-R and CD-RW discs, but cannot record.
Some audio CD-R and CD-RW discs may not be playable due to the state of disc or
the device that was used for recording.
To interrupt playback:
Press the button.
To resume playback from the same point, press the button again.
To stop playback:
Press the button.
After use:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the power stand-by mode.
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

3Press the button to open the CD cover.
4Place a CD on the spindle.

!To remove the CD
Caution:
"Do not open or close the CD cover manually. It may cause malfunctions to
the unit.
"Be careful not to jam your fingers in the CD cover.
"Do not play discs with special shapes (heart- or octagon-shaped). It may cause
malfunctions.
"If the power fails whilst the CD cover is open, wait until the power is restored.
"Keep foreign objects out of the CD compartment.
"When the unit is not being used, be sure to close the CD cover. If it is left open, the
lens may be covered with dust and the unit may not operate properly.
"When the unit enters the stand-by mode, the opened CD cover will close automat-
ically.
Notes:
"Subjecting the unit to shock or vibration may cause mistracking or skipping.
"Playing certain CD at a high volume may cause mistracking. In this case, lis-
ten at a lower volume.
"If the recorded side of the CD is touched or becomes dirty, refer to "Care of com-
pact discs" (page 29) and clean it.
"If a disc is damaged or dirty, the sound may skip.
"If an error message is displayed during CD operation, see "Error messages" on
page 29.
"If TV or radio interference occurs during CD operation, move the unit away from
the TV or radio.
Advanced CD Playback
!To locate the beginning of a track

Notes:
"Normal playback will resume when the or button is released.
"When the end of the last track is reached during fast forward, "END" will appear on
the display and CD operation will be paused. When the beginning of the first track
is reached during fast reverse, the unit will enter the playback mode.
To search very quickly:
When fast forward or fast reverse is used whilst in the pause mode, the playback
point will move more quickly than when using audible fast forward or audible fast
reverse playback.
"In this mode, no sound is heard. Therefore, you should refer to the time display.
"When you lift your finger, the unit will re-enter the pause mode.
1 Whilst in the stop mode, press the button.
2 Press the CD eject button and remove the CD.
3 Press the button to close the CD cover.

!Direct play
By using the direct buttons, the desired tracks can be played.
Notes:
"After pressing the " 10" button, the other digits must be entered within 5 seconds
of each other.
"It is not possible to enter a track number higher than the total tracks of the CD.
"You cannot select a track with the direct buttons whilst in random or programme
play.
!Switching the time display
Each time the TIME button on the remote control is pressed during playback, the dis-
play will change.
!Repeat or random play
You can select one of three playback modes; "Repeat play", "Random play" and
"Normal play".
To repeat a programmed sequence:
Perform steps 1 - 5 in the "Programmed Play" section on page 16 and then select the
repeat playback.

"During programme operation, the random mode cannot be selected by the PLAY
MODE button.
"After using repeat play, be sure to press the button. Otherwise, the disc will play
continuously.
"The random play will stop automatically when all tracks are played once. (The
same track will not be played back twice.)
"In random play, the CD player will select and play tracks automatically. (You can-
not select the order of the tracks.)
To cancel repeat or random play:
Press the PLAY MODE button repeatedly to select the normal play mode.
Press the direct buttons to select the desired track.
The direct buttons will allow you to select and play any track from 1 to 10 automati-
cally.
To select a track between 11 and 99:
Press the " 10" button followed by the two digits of the track number.
For example, to choose 28
1 Press the " 10" button.
2 Press the "2" button.
3 Press the "8" button.
The elapsed playing time for the current track will
be displayed.
The remaining playing time for the current track
will be displayed.
1When in the CD mode, press the PLAY MODE button repeatedly to
select the playback mode.
