Description SQM5... reversing actuators are used for t e positioning of flow control valves, butterfly
valves, dampers, or any application requiring rotary motion. T e SQM5… actuators
accommodate control input signals of 4 to 20 mA, 0 to 135 , 0 to 10 Vdc, 0 to 20 mA,
position proportional and floating control. T e available output signals include
4 to 20 mA, 0 to 135 , 0 to 10 Vdc, 0 to 20 mA, and 0 to 1000 . SQM5… actuators
are available wit up to six internal, easily adjustable switc es.
A selection of exc angeable circuit boards provide a variety of functions including
auto/manual selector switc , manual forward/reverse toggle switc , zero and span
adjustment, parallel or master/slave operation, split range control, input signal override,
and selectable electronic linearization.
T e SQM5… is engineered for precision. It is particularly well suited for applications
requiring a ig degree of modulating accuracy and repeatability.
T e SQM5… actuator may be mounted in any position. A selection of mounting
brackets and s afts provides installation flexibility and allows for t e simple replacement
of most competitive actuators.

Application SQM5… actuators are uniquely suited for bot industrial and commercial
applications. T e ig level of accuracy permits precise modulating control of
industrial process and process eating applications, often significantly en ancing
performance and product quality.
In commercial and industrial burner applications requiring ig turndown and
reliable ignition, t e auxiliary switc es can be applied to create separate positions
for burner ignition and low fire. In dual fuel applications, additional switc es can be
used to create separate ig fire, low fire and ignition positions for eac fuel. T e
economy position switc is used to drive t e actuator to t e full closed position
w en t e burner is off.
In all applications, commissioning is simplified. S aft and cam drum disengagement
clutc es allow for t e quick manual alignment of t e actuator s aft and switc
cams. T e forward/reverse toggle switc in combination wit t e auto/manual
selector switc provides direct manual control.

Instructions
SQM5… actuators are sometimes s ipped wit out t e s aft installed. To install t e
selected s aft:
1. Loosen t e two screws on t e actuator cover corners. See Figure 2.
2. Lift t e screws and raise t e cover. See Figure 3.

3. Eac s aft is supplied wit two was ers and a “C” clip. See Figure 4. Using
spreading pliers, remove t e “C” clip and t e was ers from t e s aft.

4. Insert t e “insert end” of t e s aft into t e “gear end” of t e actuator.
5. Pus t e s aft until t e “insert end” reac es just s ort of t e brass bus ing at t e
ot er end of t e actuator.
6. Put one of t e was ers on t e insert end of t e s aft. See Figure 5.

7. Line up t e “s aft key” wit t e key slot on t e “gear end” of t e actuator and slide
t e s aft until t e “insert end” is completely t roug t e brass bus ing.
8. Place t e second was er onto t e “insert end” of t e s aft. Using spreading pliers,
install t e “C” clip.

Verification
Actuator model numbers t at end wit “R” are factory configured for clockwise (cw),
minimum to maximum rotation w en facing t e gear end of t e actuator, or
counterclockwise (ccw) rotation w en facing t e ot er end of t e actuator. T e gear end
of t e actuator is t e side opposite of t e visual position indicator.
To field reverse t e direction of rotation, see Service Guide, “Reversing Rotational
Direction”.
Actuator Mounting SQM5… actuators can be mounted in any orientation using t e four oles located on
t e bottom corners of t e actuator base. Optional base mounting brackets are available.
See Table 2.
SQM5… actuators can also be face mounted using self tapping screws in combination
wit t e various oles on t e face of t e actuator gear end.

Switch A justment
See Figure 6.
All SQM5…actuators are factory wired wit Switc I (maximum), Switc II (fully closed
“economy position”) and Switc III (minimum). T e individual switc cams I, II, and III
are factory set to 90, 0 and 10 respectively.
NOTE: T e single switc cam pointers are used toget er wit t e black scales w en
configured for counterclockwise (ccw) operation.
T e double switc cam pointers are used toget er wit t e red scales w en
configured for clockwise (cw) operation.
T e individual switc cams can be adjusted by and or wit t e use of t e tool
attac ed to t e outside of t e inged switc terminal protection lid.

Switch A justment,
Continue NOTE: If a potentiometer is installed, t e adjustable range of t e switc es depends
on t e range of t e potentiometer.
SQM5x.xxxxxAx actuators may be adjusted between 0 and 160.
SQM5x.xxxxxx3 actuators ave a 90 potentiometer and t e switc es must be
adjusted only between 0 and 90.
SQM5x.xxxxxx4 actuators ave a 135 potentiometer and t e switc es must
be adjusted only between 0 and 135.
Shaft A justment
See Figure 6.
T e actuator s aft can be disengaged by pressing t e silver s aft release button. T e
button is located above t e grounding screw, under t e inged terminal protection
cover, and to t e rig t of t e auto/manual switc . After pressing t e s aft release button
in and slig tly upward, t e s aft can be manually rotated. After t e s aft as been
manually aligned to t e closed position, re-engage t e s aft by pus ing t e s aft
release button downwards.
Cam Drum A justment
See Figure 6.
Position Indicating Dial
Adjustment
Once t e s aft as been set, t e cam drum must be manually aligned by pressing and
olding t e black cam drum release button (see Figure 6). Rotate t e cam drum until
t e “0” mark on t e actuator position scale (left scale on t e cam drum) is aligned wit
t e gray actuator position indicating pointer.
T e actual position of t e SQM5… actuator is indicated by t e gray actuator position
indicating pointer (see Figure 6). T e position is also displayed by t e indicating dial
t roug t e ousing’s window. Ensure t at t e actuator position indicating dial is
aligned wit t e actuator position scale. If necessary, rotate t e dial in t e clockwise
direction.
CAUTION:
Turning t e dial in t e counterclockwise direction may loosen t e
potentiometer locking screw.
Wiring
Electrical Connection
SQM5… actuators are equipped wit two removable conduit connection plates located
on t e upper corner of t e gear ousing. Eac plate is provided wit two t readed
connections for 1/2" NPSM conduit connectors. T e use of flexible stranded wire is
recommended.
Groun ing
CAUTION:
To avoid electro-magnetic interference, t e SQM5… actuators must be
grounded.
T e ground terminal is located to t e rig t of t e auto/manual switc .
Disconnect t e circuit board wire marked 51 during ig voltage testing.
Reconnect it to t e grounding terminal after t e test.

Manual Operation
1. Set t e AUTO/MAN switc in t e MAN position.
2. Connect ground to t e screw located below t e s aft release button.
3. Connect neutral to t e double terminal block, located on t e left side of t e gray
switc ousing.
4. Only terminal "L" must be to enable manual operation. T e actuator can now be
driven to t e maximum position (switc cam I) or t e fully closed "economy
position" (switc cam II) by using t e toggle switc located to t e left of t e
AUTO/MAN switc .
Automatic Operation
1. Set t e AUTO/MAN switc in t e AUTO position.
2. Connect ground to t e screw located below t e s aft release button.
3. Connect neutral to t e double terminal block located on t e left side of t e gray
switc ousing.
4. Connect line voltage to terminal A to drive t e actuator in t e opening direction.
5. Connect line voltage to terminal Z to drive t e actuator in t e closing direction.
CAUTION:
Do not power terminals A and Z simultaneously. Actuator damage will occur.
