SCALANCE XCM-100 media converters convert electrical signals into optical signals.
The media converters have two ports:
• Port1 for electrical connections (100/1000 Mbps copper)
• Port2 for optical connections (100/1000 Mbps SFP transceiver)
Individual, remote end devices or network segments can be connected via the optical port
of a SCALANCE XCM-100. With two coupled media converters, it is possible to integrate an
optical link into a redundant ring.
In addition, integration of the SCALANCE XCM-100 media converters into a standby coupling
is possible. This requires redundancy-capable stations, e.g. devices of the SCALANCE XM-400
series.
For more information, refer to "Network topologies (Page14)".
3.1 Modes
There are two operating modes with SCALANCE XCM-100:
•Fast Ethernet
•Gigabit Ethernet
Depending on which SFP transceivers are plugged into a SCALANCE XCM-100, the operating
mode is set accordingly:
• SFP991-1* → operating mode Fast Ethernet
• SFP992-2* → operating mode Gigabit Ethernet
The media converter converts the frames without bu󹪜ering them internally. Therefore, the
transmission speed for the optical and the electrical connection must be identical.
The link for the two ports of the media converter is only displayed when both sides of a
media converter have been connected correctly.
3.2 Throughput times
The SCALANCE XCM-100 media converters are characterized by a low and constant throughput
time. There are di󹪜erent runtimes for the operating modes.

3.3 Standalone operation of a SCALANCE XCM-100
In standalone operation, a SCALANCE XCM-100 connects two partner devices with di󹪜erent
transmission media:

The media converter does not adapt the transmission speed between the connected
partners. Make sure that the transmission speed of the two connected partners is identical.
If the connection status for one of the two ports changes (link up or link down), this change
also takes e󹪜ect for the other port without signi󹪝cant time delay.
Observe the following rules for Fast Ethernet operating mode:
• Make sure that a suitable SFP transceiver of the type SFP991-1* is installed for the partner
device of the optical connection.
• Make sure that the correct optical cable is used.
• Make sure that autonegotiation is enabled for the partner device of the optical connection.
• The media converter ensures that the Fast Ethernet link is set via autonegotiation. This
applies to partner devices with Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
Observe the following rules for Gigabit Ethernet operating mode:
• Make sure that a suitable SFP transceiver of the type SFP992-1* is installed for the partner
device of the optical connection.
• Make sure that the correct optical cable is used.
• Make sure that the partner device of the electrical connection is Gigabit-capable and the
con󹪝guration in the device is not restricted to Fast Ethernet.

• Make sure that an 8-core copper cable is used.
• The media converter only establishes one GigabitEthernet link via autonegotiation.
3.4 Cascade (series connection) of two SCALANCE XCM-100
You can connect two media converters in series. Coupling of the two media converters is usually
performed over its optical ports. Coupling over the electrical ports is also possible (repeater for
optical links). The coupled SCALANCE XCM-100 are operated between two partner devices:

The same SFP transceiver must be plugged into both media converters.
A maximum of two SCALANCE XCM-100 can be connected in series. Mixed operation of
SCALANCE XCM-100 with SCALANCE X101-1/X101-1LD is not possible.
Because the SFP ports are connected to each other, both media converters switch the
connection status (link up or link down) at almost the same time. Delays only occur due
to the length of the optical connection or the duration of link establishment on the electrical
ports of the media converters.
Observe the following rules for Fast Ethernet operating mode:
• Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP991-1* between the two media converters.
• Make sure that the correct optical cable is used.
• Make sure that autonegotiation is enabled for the partner devices of the electrical
connections.
• The media converters ensure that the Fast Ethernet link is set via autonegotiation. This
applies to partner devices with Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
Observe the following rules for Gigabit Ethernet operating mode:
• Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP992-1* between the two media converters.
• Make sure that the correct optical cable is used.
• Make sure that the partner devices of the electrical connections are Gigabit-capable and the
con󹪝guration of the devices is not restricted to Fast Ethernet.

You can build the following topologies with the SCALANCE XCM-100 series media converters:

In this example, a SCALANCE XC208 ① is connected to a media converter ②. A SCALANCE
XC208 has only Fast Ethernet ports. Therefore, the media converter that is connected to
the SCALANCE XC208 can only work in Fast Ethernet mode. An SFP transceiver of the
type SFP991-1* must be inserted in each case between the media converter ② and the
SCALANCE XC206-2SFP ③.

The media converter ④ is connected to an XC206-2SFP ③ and a SIMATIC S7-1500 ⑤.
The two devices ③ and ⑤ are Gigabit capable. The media converter can therefore work in
Gigabit Ethernet mode. Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP992-1* between the media
converter ④ and the SCALANCE XC206-2SFP ③.
3.5.2 Star topology
The following example shows an optical star topology. SCALANCE XCM102 media converters
allow the connection of the devices with twisted pair cables.

The media converters ① are each connected with a SIMATIC S7-1500. The SIMATIC S7-1500
typically uses an electrical 100Mb port. Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP991-1* in
the media converters ①. The media converters ① are then in Fast Ethernet mode. Use SFP
transceivers of the type SFP991-1* in the connected SCALANCE XM408-8C ③ also.
The media converter ② is connected to a SIMATIC IOT2050 that has an electrical Gigabit
port. Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP992-1* in the media converter ② . The media
converter is then in Gigabit Ethernet mode. Use an SFP transceiver of the type SFP992-1* in
the connected SCALANCE XM408-8C ③ also.

3.5.3 Ring Topology
The following example shows an electrical ring with a SCALANCE XM408-4C as the redundancy
manager. With two SCALANCE XCM102 media converters, part of the ring can be implemented
with a 󹪝ber-optic cable.

Replacement of SCALANCE X101-1 devices with SCALANCE XCM102
If you want to replace SCALANCE X101-1 or SCALANCE X101-1LD devices with SCALANCE
XCM-100 type devices in a ring topology, you can only exchange the devices in pairs. Mixed
operation of SCALANCE X101-1 or SCALANCE X101-1LD with SCALANCE XCM-100 type devices
is not possible. SCALANCE X101-1 and SCALANCE X101-1LD devices use a proprietary protocol
to exchange link status information, which is not supported by SCALANCE XCM-100.

In this example, two SCALANCE XCM102 ① are linked to each other via an optical
connection. The two media converters are connected to a SCALANCE XC206-2SFP ② and
a SCALANCE XC208 ③ via copper. The electrical ports of the two IE switches only support
Fast Ethernet. Therefore, the media converters can only work in Fast Ethernet mode. Use
SFP transceivers of the type SFP991-1* between the two media converters. The link is only
displayed when all connections are connected correctly to the two media converters.

The following example shows the redundant coupling ("stand-by coupling") of rings with two
SCALANCE XCM102 media converters. This setup is only possible with redundancy-capable

Device description 4
4.1 Purpose
The devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group enable cost-e󹪜ective setup of Industrial
Ethernet networks with media transitions. The use of a SCALANCE XCM-100 Media Converter is
especially recommended for the following tasks:
• In a network with twisted pair cables, a connection is to be made with 󹪝ber-optic cables, but
the device in question does not have an FO port.
• In a redundant ring with twisted pair lines, a section is to be implemented with 󹪝ber-optic
cables. This requires the two media converters to be connected in series, which is possible
with devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group.
• A device without FO port should be integrated into a network segment with 󹪝ber-optic cables.

4.4 Scope of delivery
The following parts are included in the scope of delivery of the SCALANCE XCM-100 Media
Converter:
• One SCALANCE XCM-100 Media Converter
• One 2-pin plug-in terminal block (signaling contact)
• Two 3-pin plug-in terminal blocks (power supply and ground connection)

Do not use any parts that show evidence of damage
If you use damaged parts, there is no guarantee that the device will function according to the
speci󹪝cation.
