1.1 Purpose of this manual
This manual contains a detailed description of the Modular Safety System (in short: MSS)
3RK3 and its components. This manual provides you with the information you require for
configuring, commissioning and using the MSS. A typical safety application will provide you
with a clear and practice-oriented introduction to the system.
1.2 Required basic knowledge

1.8 User responsibility for system design and function
The products described here were developed to perform safety-related functions as part of
an overall installation or machine. A complete, safety-related system is generally equipped
with sensors, evaluation units, and signaling units, and uses reliable shutdown concepts. It is
the responsibility of the manufacturer of a system or machine to ensure that the product
functions properly.
Siemens AG, its regional offices, and associated companies (hereinafter referred to as
"Siemens") cannot guarantee all the properties of an entire plant, system or machine that

2.1 General safety notes
Note
Safety category 4 in accordance with DIN EN 954-1 / SIL 3 in accordance with
IEC 61508 / PL e in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1:2006
The Modular Safety System 3RK3 has been designed in such a way that applications can be
implemented up to category 4 in accordance with EN 954-1/SIL 3 in accordance with IEC
61508/PL e in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1:2006.
CAUTION
Observe the ESD guidelines
Please note the ESD guidelines when handling and installing the MSS components.
Changes to the configuration and wiring must only be made when the system is
disconnected from the power supply.
MSS central units and expansions modules must only be connected and disconnected from
the system when the power supply units (PELV and SELV) are switched off.

Installing devices in control cabinets
Taking the ambient conditions into account, you must install the devices in control cabinets
with the IP32, IP43 or IP54 degree of protection.
CAUTION
Noise immunity/grounding
The following must be grounded in accordance with the regulations in order to ensure noise
immunity of the MSS components:

•PELV / SELV power supply units (please also note the documentation for the respective
power supply unit in this regard).
The PROFIBUS must be grounded in accordance with the installation guidelines for
PROFIBUS networks (see the PROFIBUS manual).

NOTICE
Operational faults and malfunctions in communication
If the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC (CE) is not observed when plants and devices are
installed, communication breaks may occur.
Note
Cover all unused system interfaces.
2.2 Safety information for hazardous areas

Installing the MSS
The MSS components are not suitable for installation in hazardous areas.
Use the devices only in a control cabinet with a degree of protection of at least IP 4x. When
installed in hazardous areas, the MSS components must not present any possible
explosion hazard. Take all appropriate measures, e.g. enclosure.
2.3 Guidelines for inductive loads
CAUTION
If a switching contact is installed between solid-state outputs and an inductive load, the load
must be equipped with inductive interference protection because the inductive interference
protection of the module becomes ineffective when the switching contact is actuated.
Inductive loads must be provided with protective circuits that limit the voltage rise when the
controller output is switched off. Protective circuits protect the outputs against premature
failure due to high inductive switched currents. They also limit the electrical faults that can
occur when inductive loads are connected.
Tip
The effectiveness of a protective circuit depends on the respective application and must
always be checked on a case-by-case basis. The components in a protective circuit must
always be rated in line with the relevant application.

DC outputs and relays that control DC loads
The DC outputs are equipped with an internal protection system that is suitable for most
applications. Since the relay can be used for a DC or AC load, an internal protection system
is not provided.
This diagram shows an example of a protective
circuit for a DC load. In most applications, a diode
(A) can be used in parallel with the inductive load.
If your application requires more rapid shutdown
times, however, a Zener diode (B) is
recommended. Rate the Zener diode in
accordance with the current in the output circuit.

AC outputs and relays that control AC loads
The AC outputs are equipped with an internal protection system that is suitable for most
applications. Since the relay can be used for a DC or AC load, an internal protection system
is not provided.
The diagrams show examples of protective
circuits for AC loads. If you connect loads of 115
V / 230 V AC with a relay or an AC output,
arrange the resistive/capacitor networks in
parallel with the AC loads (see above). You can
also limit the peak voltage with a metal-oxide
varistor (MOV) (see below). Ensure that the
working voltage of the varistor is at least 20%
higher than the rated voltage.

When you connect inductive AC loads with relay expansion modules, the external
resistor/capacitor protective circuit must be arranged in parallel with the AC load to prevent
the machine/process from starting unexpectedly.

in the technical description, and only in conjunction with non-Siemens equipment and
components recommended by Siemens.
Correct transport, storage, installation and assembly, as well as careful operation and
maintenance, are required to ensure that the product operates safely and without faults.
Before you run any sample programs or programs you have written yourself, make sure
that running the plant cannot cause injury to anyone else or damage to the machine itself.
EU note: Start-up/commissioning is absolutely prohibited until it has been ensured that the
machine in which the component described here is to be installed fulfills the
