You must meet t he f ollowing minimum requirement s:

2. 3 | Rebooting and Restoring the Wireless Cable Modem Gateway
The Reset but t on is locat ed on t he rear panel of t he EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem
Gat eway. Use a paper clip or a pencil t ip t o push t he Reset but t on.
Reboot
If t he Gat eway is having problems connect ing t o t he Int ernet , simply hold down t he reset
but t on f or less t han 2 seconds t hen release.
Restore Factory Defaults
If reboot ing t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway does not resolve your issue, t hen you can
follow t hese st eps:
1. Leave power plugged int o t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway.
2. Locat e t he reset but t on on t he back panel, press and hold but t on f or at least 5 seconds.

CHAPTER 3 | Installation
The EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway can be inst alled in any locat ion where you
have cable int ernet access, and t he cable int ernet service provider has approved t he EZ
Connect ™Wirel ess Cabl e Modem Gat eway. To conf ir m you meet t hese 2 cri t eria point s, pl ease
cont act your local ISP.
For general inst allat ion please follow t he guidelines out lined below t o best perf ormance:
•Keep t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway away f rom any heat ing devices.
•Do not place t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway in a dust y or wet environment .
•For opt imum wireless perf ormance, inst all t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway away
from ot her elect ronic devices, such as Monit ors / TV / 2. 4GHz Cordless Phones. These
devices can hamper your wireless t hroughput and dist ance.
The EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway can be posit ioned t wo ways, horizont al and
vert ical.
To inst all t he Wireless Cable Modem in a vert ical posit ion, on t he l eft side of t he device, when
looking at t he LEDs – t here is a built -in base st and. Pull out t he st and out and t urn it 90 degrees
and posit ion t he gat eway on it s side. See t he different Inst all posit ions below:

3. 2 | Basic Installation Procedure
1. Connect the LAN: You can connect t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway t o your PC, or t o a
hub or swit ch. Run Et hernet cable f rom one of t he LAN port s on t he rear of t he Wireless
Cable Modem Gat eway t o your comput er’ s net work adapt er or t o anot her net work device.
You can also connect t he Wireless Cable Modem Gateway t o your PC (using a wirel ess cl ient
adapt er) via radio signals.
Note: It is recommended t hat f or f irst -t ime set up you use a wired connect ion.
2. Connect the WAN: Connect a coax cable t o t he CATV port on t he back of t he Wireless
Cable Modem Gat eway f rom a cable port locat ed in your home. When connect ing t o t he
CATV port , use only manufact ured coaxial pat ch cables wit h F-t ype connect ors at bot h
ends for all connect ions.
Note: If t his modem was NOT inst alled by t he cable service provider (ISP) or is being used
t o replace anot her cable modem – please cont act your Cable Operat or (ISP) t o regist er t he
SMC8013WG. Wit hout regist ering t he modem wit h your ISP it will be unable t o connect t o
t he cable net work syst em.
3. Power on: Connect t he power adapt er t o t he EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway.
Warning: Only use t he power adapt er t hat was provided wit h t he EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable
Modem Gat eway, using anot her power adapt er may damage your unit and void t he warrant y.

CHAPTER 4 | Configuring your Computer
The informat ion out lined in t his chapt er will guide you t hrough t he configurat ion f or t he
following Operat ing Syst ems:

4. 1 | Configuring Windows 95/ 98/ Me
1. Access your Net work set t ings by clicking
[St art ] , choose [ Set t ings] , and t hen select
[Cont rol Panel] .
2. In t he Cont rol Panel , locat e and double-cl ick
t he [ Net work] icon.
3. Highlight t he TCP/ IP l ine t hat has been
assigned t o your net work card on t he
[Conf igurat ion] t ab of t he [ Net work]
propert ies window. (see net work dial og box t o
t he right )
4. Next , click t he [Propert ies] but t on t o view
t hat adapt er’ s TCP/ IP set t ings.
5. From t he TCP/ IP Propert ies dialog box, click
t he [ Obt ain an IP address aut omat ically]
opt ion. (see TCP/ IP dialog box t o t he
right )
6. Next click on t he [ Gat eway] t ab and verify
t he Gat eway field is blank. If t here are IP
addresses list ed in t he Gat eway sect ion,
highlight each one and click [Remove]
unt il t he sect ion is empt y.
7. Cl ick t he [ OK] but t on t o close t he TCP/ IP
Propert ies window.
8. On t he Net work Propert ies Window, click
t he [ OK] but t on t o save t hese new
changes.
NOTE: Windows may ask you f or t he
original Windows inst all at ion disk or
addit ional f iles. Check f or t he f iles at
c:\windows\opt ions\ cabs, or insert your Windows CD-ROM int o your CD-ROM drive and
check t he correct f ile locat ion, f or example, D: \win98, D: \win9x. (Assume “ D” is your
CD-ROM drive).
9. Windows may prompt you t o rest art t he PC. If so, click t he [ Yes] but t on. If Windows
does not prompt you t o rest art your comput er, do so anyways t o ensure your set t ings.

4. 2 | Configuring Windows 2000
1. Access your Net work set t ings by clicking
[St art ] , choose [ Set t ings] , and t hen
select [Cont rol Panel ]
2. In t he Cont rol Panel, locat e and double-
click t he [ Net work and Dial-up
Connect ions] icon
3. Locat e and double-click t he [ Local Area
Connect ion] icon f or t he Et hernet
adapt er t hat is connect ed t o t he
Gat eway. When t he St at us dialog box
window opens, click t he [ Propert ies]
but t on.
4. On t he [ Local Area Connect ion]
Propert ies box, verif y t he box next t o
Int ernet Prot ocol (TCP/ IP) is checked.
Then highlight t he Int ernet Prot ocol (TCP/ IP), and click t he Propert ies but t on.
5. Sel ect Obt ain an IP address aut omat ically t o configure your comput er for DHCP. Click
t he [ OK] but t on t o save t his change and close t he Propert ies window.
6. Cl ick t he [ OK] but t on again t o save t hese new changes.
7. Reboot your PC.

4. 3 | Configuring Windows XP
The following inst ruct ions assume you are running Windows XP wit h t he default int erf ace. If
you are using t he Classic int erf ace (where t he icons and menus look like previous Windows
versions), pl ease f ollow t he inst ruct ions f or Windows 2000 out lined above.
1. Access your Net work set t ings by
clicking [ St art ] , choose [ Cont rol
Panel], select [ Net work and Int ernet
Connect ions] and t hen click on t he
[Net work Connect ions] icon.
2. Locat e and double-click t he Local
Area Connect ion icon f or t he Et hernet
adapt er t hat is connect ed t o t he
Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway. Next ,
click t he [ Propert ies] but t on.
3. On t he [ Local Area Connect ion]
Propert ies box, verif y t he box next t o
Int ernet Prot ocol (TCP/ IP) is checked.
Then highlight t he Int ernet Prot ocol
(TCP/ IP), and click t he Propert ies
but t on.
4. Sel ect Obt ain an IP address aut omat ically t o configure your comput er for DHCP. Click
t he [ OK] but t on t o save t his change and close t he Propert ies window.
5. Cl ick t he [ OK] but t on again t o save t hese new changes.
6. Reboot your PC.
4. 4 | Configuring a Macintosh Computer
You may f ind t hat t he inst ruct ions here do not exact ly mat ch t he screens you see, t his is
because t hese st eps were creat ed using Mac OS 8. 5. Mac OS 7.x and above are all very similar,
but may not be ident ical t o Mac OS 8. 5.
1. Pull down t he Apple Menu. Cl ick [ Cont rol Panel] and select TCP/ IP.
2. In t he TCP/ IP dialog box, make sure t hat [Et hernet ] is select ed in t he [ Connect Via: ]
field.
If [Using DHCP Server] is already select ed in t he [ Conf igure] f ield, your comput er is
already conf igured f or DHCP. Close t he TCP/ IP dialog box, and skip t o St ep 2 Disable
HTTP Proxy (bot t om of t his page).
3. All t he informat ion t hat you need t o record is on t he [TCP/ IP] dialog box. Use t he space
below t o record t he informat ion.
4. Select [Using DHCP Server] in t he [ Conf igure] f ield and close t he window.
5. Anot her box will appear asking whet her you want t o save your TCP/ IP set t ings. Click
[Save].

CHAPTER 5 | Configuring the Wireless Cable Modem
Gateway
Af t er you have conf igured TCP/ IP on a client comput er, use a web browser t o conf igure t he EZ
Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway. The Gat eway can be configured by any Java-
support ed browser including Int ernet Explorer 5. 0 or above, or Net scape Navigat or 5.0 or
above. Using t he web management int erface, you may configure t he Wireless Cable Modem
Gat eway feat ures and view st at ist ics t o monit or net work act ivit y.
Before you at t empt t o log int o t he Wirel ess Cable Modem Gat eway’ s Web-based
Administ rat ion, please verif y t he f ollowing:
1. Your browser is conf igured properly. (see below)
2. Disable any firewall or securit y soft ware t hat may be running.
3. Confirm t hat you have a good [ link] LED where your comput er is plugged int o t he
Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway. If you don’ t have a [ link] light , t ry anot her cabl e unt il
you get a good link.
5. 1 | Browser Configuration
Conf irm your browser is configured f or a direct connect ion t o t he Int ernet using t he Et hernet
cable t hat is inst alled in t he comput er. This is conf igured t hrough t he opt ions/ preference sect ion
of your browser.
5. 2 | Disable Proxy Connection
You will also need t o verif y t hat t he “ HTTP Proxy” f eat ure of your web browser is disabled. This
is so t hat your web browser will be able t o view t he web-based configurat ion pages. The
following st eps are f or Int ernet Explorer and f or Net scape. Det ermine which browser you use and
follow t he appropriat e st eps.
Internet Explorer (5. 0 or above)
1. Open Int ernet Explorer. Click [ Tools] , and t hen select [ Int ernet Opt ions] .
2. In t he [Int ernet Opt ions] window, click t he [ Connect ions] t ab.
3. Cl ick t he [ LAN Set t ings] but t on.
4. Cl ear al l t he check boxes and click [ OK] t o save t hese LAN set t ings changes.
5. Cl ick [OK] again t o close t he [ Int ernet Opt ions] window.
Note: To ensure proper screen ref resh af t er a command ent ry, be sure t hat Int ernet Explorer
5. 0 is configured as f ollows: Under t he menu “ Tools/ Int ernet Opt ions/ General/ Temporary
Int ernet Files/ Set t ings, ” t he set t ing f or “ Check for newer versions of st ored pages” shoul d be
“ Every visit t o t he page. ”
Netscape (5.0 or above)
1. Open Net scape. Click [Edit ], and t hen select [ Preferences] .
2. In t he [Preferences] window, under [Cat egory], double-click [ Advanced], t hen select
t he [ Proxies] opt ion.
3. Check [Direct connect ion t o t he Int ernet ].
4. Cl ick t he [ OK] but t on t o save t he changes.

5. 3 | Accessing the Wireless Cable Modem Gateway’s Web Management
To access t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway’ s web-based management screens, f ollow t he
st eps below:
1. Launch your web-browser.
NOTE: Your comput er does not have t o be ONLINE t o conf igure t he Wireless Cable
Modem Gat eway.
2. In t he Address Bar, t ype: ht t p:/ / 10. 1. 10.1
Note: For some browsers, it may be necessary t o include: 88 aft er t he management IP
address. For example: ht t p:/ / 10.1. 10.1: 88
3. When t he Gat eway’ s Login screen appears, ent er t he default username and password,
and click t he [ Login] but t on t o access t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway.
There are 2 default login account s, one f or t he User and one f or t he Inst aller, bot h set s
of informat ion are l ist ed below:

NOTE: Username and Password are case sensit ive
4. Once you have logged int o t he Gat eway’ s web-based admin screen, you have several
opt ions and f eat ures which can be configured.
All f eat ures available and how t o conf igure each one is out lined in t he next sect ion

CHAPTER 6 | Navigating the Web-based Administration
The EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway’ s management int erf ace all ows you t o
configure bot h basic and advanced f eat ures and opt ions. Some of t hese advanced f unct ions
include: hacker at t ack det ect ion, IP and MAC address filt ering, int rusion det ect ion, virt ual
server set up, virt ual DMZ host s, as well as ot her advanced f unct ions.
6. 1 | Making Configuration Changes
Once a configurat ion change has been made on a page, be sure t o click t he [ Apply] or [Next ]
but t on at t he bot t om of t he page t o enabl e t he new set t ing.
6. 2 | System
This sect ion is used t o conf igure t he device mode and administ rat ion opt ions.
On t he screen shown below, you can configure t he Rout er Name.
6. 2. 1 | Password Settings
From t his sect ion you can conf igure a new administ rat ion password t hat is used t o access t he
web management from your local LAN or by remot e management from t he WAN (int ernet ).
To access t he Remot e Management conf iguration page, on t he Side Navigat ion bar, click on
[Syst em] link and t hen click on t he [ Password Set t ings] link.
If your password is lost , or you cannot gain access t o t he user int erf ace, press t he Reset but t on
on t he rear panel (holding it down f or at least five seconds) t o rest ore t he f act ory default s.

6. 4 | LAN
From t his sect ion you can conf igure t he f ollowing set t ings:
•The privat e LAN set t ings, including t he IP address of your Wireless Cable Modem
Gat eway
•The IP Address Pool range for DHCP client s
•Enable or Disable t he int egrat ed DHCP server
•Conf igure t he DHCP Lease t ime f or your DHCP client s
To access t he LAN conf igurat ion page, on t he Side Navigat ion bar, click on [ LAN] link.
LAN IP
Use t he LAN sect ion t o configure t he LAN IP address for t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway and
t o enable t he DHCP server for dynamic client address allocat ion. You can also configure t he
Lease Time for t he DHCP client s on your net work.
Note: Set a period f or t he lease t ime if required. For home net works t his may be set t o
[Forever] , which means t here is no t ime limit on t he IP address lease.

IP Address Pool
A dynamic IP st art address may be specif ied by t he user, e.g. 10.1. 10.1 (default value). Once
t his st art IP address has been assigned, IP addresses running f rom 10.1. 10.10 t o 10. 1.10. 199
wil l be part of t he dynamic IP address pool. IP addresses f rom 10.1.10. 200 t o 10. 1. 10. 253 will
be available as st at ic IP addresses.
Note: Do not t o include t he address of t he EZ Connect ™Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway
(10. 1.10.1 – default IP) in t he client address pool.
6. 6 | NAT
Net work Address Translat ion (NAT) allows mult iple users at your local sit e t o access t he
Int ernet t hrough a single public IP address.
6. 6. 1 | Port Forwarding
The Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway has a built -in virt ual server f or port forwarding. You can
configure t his f eat ure t o redirect t he ext ernal service request t o t he appropriat e int ernal
server and port .
For example, if you are running a WEB server, you can conf igure all t raf f ic on port 80 t o be
redirect ed t o t he IP address of t he WEB server running on your net work.
To access t he Port Forwarding conf igurat ion page, on t he Side Navigat ion bar, click on [ NAT]
link and t hen click on t he [Port Forwarding] link.
This Virt ual Server f unct ion support s 2 t ypes of Services:
•Predef ined Service
•Cust omer Service

Predefined Service
The Predef ined Service opt ion has a pull-down menu wit h several popular Service Applicat ions,
such as HTTP (80), FTP (20/ 21), and AIM/ ICQ (5190).
To configure t he virt ual server for a Predefined Service, f ollow t he st eps below:
1. Select t he [ Service] t hat you want t o have access t hrough t he f irewall t o your LAN f rom
t he pull-down menu.
2. Ent er in t he [ LAN Server IP] for t he LAN PC t hat is running t his service or applicat ion
3. You can also configure [ Remot e IPs] opt ion t o allow access t o t his specif ic port f rom
t he WAN side. This can be conf igured for 3 different access t ypes:
a. Any IP Address [Any] – choose t his opt ion t o allow access t o any public IP
address.
b. Single IP Address [Single Address] – choose t his opt ion t o allow access t o a
single public IP address.
c. IP Address Range [Address Range] – choose t he opt ion t o allow a range of public
IP addresses.
4. Cl ick t he [ Apply] but t on t o save your changes and ret urn t o t he Port Forwarding main

Customer Server (custom)
The Cust omer Defined Service sect ion all ows you t o conf igure t he Virt ual Server opt ion t o any
Traf f ic t ype (TCP/ UDP/ TCP and UDP), any Public Port , and any Privat e Port .
To conf igure t his cust om opt ion, please f ollow t he st eps below:
1. Ent er in a Descript ion [Name] for t his cust om set t ing

2. Configure t he Traf fic or Dat a [ Type] t hat you want t o f orward
3. Set t he [ LAN Server IP] of t he PC t hat you want t his t raf fic/ dat a redirect ed t o
4. You can also configure [ Remot e IPs] opt ion t o allow access t o t his specif ic port f rom
t he WAN side. This can be conf igured for 3 different access t ypes:
a. Any IP Address [Any] – choose t his opt ion t o all ow access t o any public IP
address.
b. Single IP Address [Single Address] – choose t his opt ion t o allow access t o a
single public IP address.
c. IP Address Range [Address Range] – choose t he opt ion t o allow a range of public
IP addresses.
5. Set t he [ Public Port ] t hat t his applicat ion will use on t he WAN (Int ernet ) side
6. Set t he [ Privat e Port ] t hat t he LAN PC wil l be wait ing for t his t raf fic/ dat a f rom
Below is an example set t ing f or a WEB server on an int ernet connect ion, where port 80 is
blocked f rom t he WAN side, but port 8000 is available.
Name: Web Server
Type: TCP
LAN Server IP: 10.1. 10. 100
Remot e IPs: Any (allow access t o any public IP)
Public Port : 8000
Privat e Port : 80
Wit h t his configurat ion, all HTTP (Web) TCP t raf fic f rom any IP Address from t he WAN side will
be redirect ed t hrough t he f irewall t o t he Int ernal Server (192.168. 2.100) on port 80.
Note: This configurat ion is useful because you don’ t have t o reconf igure your web server t o
accept t raf fic on a dif ferent port , you can do t his configurat ion f rom t he f irewall.

6. 7 | Firewall
The Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway provides a st at eful inspect ion f irewall (SPI), which is
designed t o prot ect against Denial of Service (DoS) at t acks when act ivat ed. It s purpose is t o
allow a privat e local area net work (LAN) t o be securely connect ed t o t he Int ernet . To provide a
flexible solut ion, t he f irewall sect ion has t he f ollowing f eat ures:

Access Cont rol allows users t o block access t o users on your net work f rom t he Int ernet . Access
Rules can be configured t o a specif ic LAN IP Address or a range of LAN IP Address’ s.
To access t he Access Cont rol conf igurat ion page, on t he Side Navigat ion bar, click on [Firewall]
link and t hen click on t he [ Access Cont rol] link.
To enable t his f eat ure, check t he [Enable Filt ering] checkbox.
From t his sect ion, you can also choose t o have t he Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway t o [ Respond
t o Ping on Int ernet WAN Port ] . If you check t his opt ion, t he Gat eway will respond t o PING
request s t o t he WAN IP address. By Def aul t t his opt ion is disabled, so t he Wireless Cable
Modem Gat eway will NOT respond t o PING request s f rom t he WAN side.
