1 BACNET EXPLORER DESCRIPTION
The BACnet Explorer provides a discovery tool for any BACnet/IP or BACnet MS/TP network.
The BACnet Explorer has one RS-485 MS/TP port. Configuration is accomplished via a web page
browser.
2 INSTALLING THE BACNET EXPLORER
2.1 RS-485 Connection R2 port
Connect to the 3 pins on the left-hand-side of the 6 pin connector as shown.
The following Baud Rates are supported on the R2 Port:
4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 76800, 115200
2.2 10/100 Ethernet Connection port
The Ethernet Port is used both for BACnet/IP communications. It is also used for configuring the BACnet
Explorer from a Web page. Follow the steps below to connect the BACnet Explorer to a BACnet network
and optionally to a PC for configuration purposes:
Connect an Ethernet cable between the PC and the BACnet Explorer or connect the BACnet
Explorer and the PC to the Hub/switch using a straight CAT5 cable.
Disable any wireless Ethernet adapters on the PC/Laptop.
Disable firewall and virus protection software.

3 OPERATION
3.1 Power up the device
Apply power to the device. Ensure that the power supply used complies with the specifications provided
in Appendix A. Ensure that the cable is grounded using the “Frame GND” terminal. The BACnet
Explorer is factory set for 9-30VDC or 12-24VAC.

4 CONNECTING TO THE BACNET EXPLORER
The FieldServer Toolbox Application can be used to discover and connect to the BACnet Explorer on a
local area network. To connect to the BACnet Explorer over the Internet using Toolbox, add the Internet
exposed IP Address of the BACnet Explorer by clicking on the button, or alternatively enter the
Internet exposed IP Address in a Web Browser directly.
4.1 Using the FieldServer Toolbox
Install the Toolbox application from the USB drive or get it from our website
http://www.sierramonitor.com/customer-care/resource-center?filters=software-downloads
Use the Toolbox application to find the BACnet Explorer, change the IP Address detail if
required and launch the Web GUI.

4.2 Connect Using a Web Browser
Open a Web Browser and connect to the BACnet Explorer’s Default IP Address. The Default
IP Address of the BACnet Explorer is 192.168.2.101, Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0.
If the PC and the BACnet Explorer are on different IP Networks, assign a Static IP Address to
the PC on the 192.168.2.X network.

4.3 Logging into BACnet Explorer
Click the orange “Login” button and enter the user name and password informaiton.
NOTE: Default user name is “admin” and default password is “admin”.
The BACnet Explorer landing page will open once the correct information has been entered and
the “Log In” button is clicked.

4.3.1 Change Password
Once logged in, click on the profile dropdown menu in the top right corner of any
page.
Then click on Settings (gear icon) to open the Profile Settings window.
Fill in the old password and the two new password fields, then click the change password button.
A sucessful password update message will appear, click the “x” in the upper right corner of the
window to exit the Profile Settings window.
4.4 Add Additional Users
Once in the Profile Settings window, fill in the Username, the two Password, and role fields.
NOTE: An administrator role has full access to the BACnet Explorer and user management, while a user
role does not have user management capability.
Click the Add User button to save the new user.
4.5 Manage Users
When more than one user is created on the BACnet Explorer, the Manage Users field will appear
in the Profile Settings window.

NOTE: Only administrators are able to see and edit Manage User fields.
To edit a user entry, select a specific user from the dropdown menu.
This opens up multiple fields that allow editing of user information.
Select the action to perform:
oResent user password –Fill in the two password fields and click the Reset Password
button
oChange user role –Select the desired role in the dropdown menu and click the Change
Role button
oDelete user –Simply click the Delete User button and the user entry will be deleted

5 CONFIGURING THE BACNET EXPLORER
5.1 Configuration Page
By default the BACnet Explorer will open up on the BACnet Explorer page. Navigate to the Configuration
page by clicking on the Configuration button.
NOTE: Each page has a corresponding button in the column down the left side of every page.
5.1.1 Network Settings
The IP settings for the BACnet Explorer are used by both BACnet connections. The IP settings can be
edited in the Network Settings section as shown.

5.1.2 BACnet Settings
5.1.2.1 All connections
Network Number –set up the BACnet network number for the connection. Legal values are 1-
65534. Each network number must be unique across the entire BACnet internetwork.
Save and Reset Buttons –click these to save or reset the settings for BACnet/IP and BACnet
MS/TP.
5.1.2.2 BACnet/IP Settings
IP Port –the BACnet/IP default is 47808 (0xBAC0), but other port numbers can may be specified.
5.1.2.3 BACnet MS/TP
MAC Address –legal values are 0-127, must be unique on the physical network
Max Master –the highest MAC address to scan for other MS/TP master devices. The default of
127 is guaranteed to discover all other MS/TP master devices on the network.
Max Info Frames –the number of transactions the BACnet Explorer may initiate while it has the
MS/TP token. Default is 50.
BAUD Rate –the serial baud rate used on the network.
Token Usage Timeout (ms) –the number of milliseconds the router will wait before deciding that
another master has dropped the MS/TP token. This value must be between 20ms and 100ms.
Choose a larger value to improve reliability when working with slow MS/TP devices that may not
be able to meet strict timing specifications.

5.2 Foreign Device Registration for BBMD Support
The BACnet Explorer uses “Foreign Device Registration” or “FDR” to communicate to BACnet IP devices
on another network. Follow the instructions below to enable FDR between the BACnet Explorer and a
remote network:
Click the “Enabled” checkbox under the Foreign Device Registration section of the BACnet
Settings.
Enter the Remote BACnet Router’s externally mapped IP Address and BACnet/IP Port to the
appropriate Foreign Device Registration fields.
This allows the BACnet Explorer to discover BACnet devices on the remote network.
NOTE: The user must uncheck the “Enabled” checkbox to allow the BACnet Explorer to discover
on the local network.
NOTE: See Appendix B for additional details concerning FDR and BBMD.

6 USING THE BACNET EXPLORER
Click on the BACnet Explorer button on the left side of the screen to go to the BACnet Explorer
page.
6.1 Discover Device List
To discover the devices connected to the same subnet as the BACnet Explorer, click the
Discover button (cycle icon).
This will open the Discovery window, click the checkboxes next to the desired discovery settings
and click Discover to start the search.

NOTE: Allow the devices to populate before interacting with the device list for optimal performance. A
green message will appear in the upper right corner of the browser to confirm that a discovery is
complete.
6.2 View Device Details and Explore Points/Parameters
To view the device details, click the blue plus sign next to each device in the list.
oThis will show only some of device properties for a device

To view the full details of a device, go back to highlighting the unexpanded device (in this case
“555”) and click the Explore button .
oNow additional device details are viewable; however, the device can be explored even
further

Then click on the Explore button again.
A full list of the device details will appear on the right side window. If changes are expected since the last
explore, simply press the Refresh button on the upper right side of the screen to refresh all the
values.
NOTE: “_properties” items cannot be further explored.

6.2.1 Edit the Present Value Field
The only field that recommended to edit via BACnet Explorer is the device’s present value field.
NOTE: Other BACnet properties are editable (such as object name, object description, etc.);
however, this is not recommended because the BACnet Explorer is a discovery tool not a
Building Management System (BMS).
To edit the present value, select it in the property listings.
Then click the edit button in the upper right corner of the screen to bring up the Edit
Property window.

Enter the appropriate change and click save.
A check will appear inside the save button and the window will close. When the BACnet Explorer
page appears the present value will be changed as specified.
NOTE: Attempting to edit any other field will not write and result in a warning message.
