Thank you for purchasing the Socket Bluetooth Cordless Hand Scanner
(Bluetooth CHS) 7X or 7XRx. The Socket Bluetooth CHS combines the power of
2D and 1D barcode scanning with the convenience of Bluetooth wireless
technology so you can collect barcode data without being tied to your mobile
or desktop computer.
Compact, lightweight, and ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in a
hand, the Socket Bluetooth CHS is ideal for high volume data collection
applications. It features a ruggedized exterior that is water, dust and shock
resistant and withstands multiple drops to concrete.

The Socket Bluetooth CHS features a stylus tip in the tail of
the Bluetooth CHS that you can use on Pocket PC and other
device touch screens.
WARNING: Do not use the stylus if damaged. A
damaged stylus may scratch the display screen of your
computer.
Note: The stylus does not work with tablets using Active Matrix displays.
Antimicrobial Protection
The Socket Bluetooth CHS 7XRx is made with antimicrobial materials to provide
an extra layer of protection to the device against the multiplication and spread
of potentially harmful bacteria and microbes.
•Socket recommends using Sani-Cloth® Plus brand disposable cloth wipes as
the standard disinfectant wipe for the Bluetooth CHS 7XRx.
Do not use a bleach-based or Dispatch® brand cloth wipes, as they negate
all antimicrobial properties that have been added to the device.

2 long beeps (same tone) Scanner unsuccessfully tried 10 times to connect to
computer. After these attempts, the scanner will go
into sleep mode and power off after 5 minutes of
inactivity.
1 beep with green LED Data successfully scanned and sent to computer.
5 consecutive tones The scanner detects an internal fault and will reset
itself. If the scanner is connected to a host computer,
it will disconnect during the reset.

CHARGING THE SCANNER
Charge the internal battery by using the included cable. The scanner must be
fully charged before its first use.
WARNING: Do not remove the pre-installed battery!
The LED will emit a solid red light while charging and turn green
when the battery is fully charged. The LED will flash red every
second when the battery is less than 20% charged.
The adapter rating is 5V, 2A, positive pole center. A new, fully
charged battery lasts ~10 hours under normal usage conditions. The
power jack fits a 4mm barrel connector.

You can also charge the scanner with AC and DC adapters of the
Socket SoMo®650 handheld computer. Use Socket recommended
chargers only. Using other chargers may damage your scanner and
will void your warranty.

ATTACHING THE TETHER
1. Use a coin or screwdriver to unlock and remove the battery cover. Turn
the lock underneath the scanner to a horizontal position to unlock.
2. Remove the battery cover. Make sure you do NOT remove the battery.
The Bluetooth Device Address is printed on a label inside the battery
compartment. The address is used to identify the Bluetooth CHS.
3. Wrap the string loop of the tether around the inside part of the lock on
the battery cover.
4. Replace the battery cover and turn the lock to a vertical position to
secure it.
5. If desired, attach the tether to a lanyard or belt.

BASIC FUNCTIONALITY
Function Procedure
Powering on /off
Power On: Press and hold down the power button until you
hear two (low-high) tones.
Power Off: Press and hold down the power button until you
hear two (high-low) tones.
Scanning barcodes
Press and hold the trigger button to activate the scanner. An
aiming beam will appear for 3 seconds. Position the red
aiming beam over the 2D (or 1D) barcode. The CHS will beep,
flash a green LED, and vibrate to confirm the barcode was
decoded and data recorded in your application.
Enabling/ Disabling
Symbologies Please refer to the Command Sheet in Chapter 5.
Modifying Scanner
Mode Please refer to the Command Sheet in Chapter 5.
Data Editing Please refer to the Command Sheet in Chapter 5.
Disconnecting Disconnect through your device’s Bluetooth software or
simply turn off the CHS.
Factory Reset
Reverts CHS back to factory default state. You can do this to
remove a pairing or revert to the default Bluetooth device
class (keyboard for Windows, “other” for iPad).
1. Power on CHS
2. Press and hold down the Trigger button and momentarily
press the Power button while still holding down the
Trigger button.
3. After 15 seconds, the scanner will beep. Release the
Trigger button.
4. The scanner will beep 5 times and power off.
5. The next time you power on the scanner, it will take
longer than normal. After the scanner finishes powering
on, it will have factory default settings.
Pairing Reset
Releases the Bluetooth pairing from the last system the CHS
was paired to. This allows new pairing to another system.
1. Power on CHS
2. Press and hold down the Trigger button and press the
Power button until you hear a series of 3 tones.
Retrieving Scanner
and Firmware
Information
1. Power on the scanner and pair via Bluetooth with system.
2. Open Notepad or Notes application and set cursor in
application.
3. Press and hold down the trigger button for 15 seconds or
until data outputs in text into Notepad/Notes application.

This chapter explains how to install and use the
Bluetooth Cordless Hand Scanner (Bluetooth CHS) 7X
or 7XRx with a Bluetooth enabled computer running
Windows 7, Vista or XP
Before you begin the instructions in this chapter, make
sure you have charged the scanner, as described in
Chapter 2, “Hardware Setup.”
Note: No software installation is required for normal operation.
STEP 1: TURN ON THE BLUETOOTH CHS
Press and hold the small power button for 3 seconds, or until the LED
turns blue and the scanner beeps twice (low-high). The LED should blink blue
once per second to show that the Bluetooth radio is on but not connected.

STEP 2: START BLUETOOTH ON YOUR COMPUTER
Note: Refer to your Bluetooth hardware/software documentation for full instructions.
1. If using an add-on Bluetooth adapter plug it into your computer.
2. Start your computer’s Bluetooth software. For some computers, the Bluetooth
software will automatically launch after you turn on the Bluetooth radio.
3. Turn on the Bluetooth radio. For some computers, the Bluetooth radio must be
enabled through the software. Other computers have a hardware switch.

STEP 3: CONNECT COMPUTER TO SCANNER
Follow the appropriate instructions for your Bluetooth stack. Refer to your
Bluetooth software manual for full instructions.
Microsoft Bluetooth Stack:
1. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in the task tray. In the pop-up menu,
click Add a Device (Windows 7) or Add a Bluetooth Device (Windows
Vista/XP).
2. Windows Vista/XP: Check the box My device is set up and ready to be
found. Click Next.
3. After the device search, select Socket CHS 7x [xxxxxx]. Click Next.
Note: The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the scanner’s
Bluetooth Device Address, which is labeled inside the battery compartment.

4. A passkey or pairing option screen will appear.
-Windows 7: Select Enter the device’s pairing code and enter the
default PIN 0000 (four zeroes). Click Next.
-Windows Vista/XP: Select Use the passkey found in the
documentation and enter the default PIN 0000 (four zeroes).
Click Next.
5. Your computer will connect to the scanner. After connecting, the
Bluetooth CHS will beep once, and the LED will blink blue once every 3
seconds. Complete the remainder of the wizard.

Toshiba Bluetooth Stack:
1. Double-click on the Bluetooth icon at the bottom of your screen.
2. In Bluetooth Settings, click New Connection.
3. The Add New Connection Wizard will launch. Select Express Mode and
click Next. The tablet will search for Bluetooth devices in range.
4. In the list of devices, select Socket CHS 7x [xxxxxx]. Click Next.
Note: The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the scanner’s
Bluetooth Device Address, which is labeled inside the battery compartment.
5. If a passkey is requested, enter the default PIN 0000 (four zeroes). Click
OK. To indicate the connection, the Bluetooth CHS will beep once.

6. After connecting, an icon for the Bluetooth CHS will appear in the
Bluetooth Settings screen.
7. In the last screen, click Finish.

Broadcom (Widcomm) Bluetooth Stack:
1. Click the Bluetooth icon in the task tray.
2. On the left side, under Bluetooth Tasks, click Add a Bluetooth
Device.
Note: Do not use Quick Connect | Bluetooth serial devices as the scanner does
not support Serial Port Profile.
3. After the device search, select the Bluetooth CHS 7x, which will appear as
Socket CHS 7x [xxxxxx].
Note: The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the scanner’s
Bluetooth Device Address, which is labeled inside the battery compartment.
4. If a passkey is requested, enter 0000 (four zeroes) and click Pair Now.
5. In the Bluetooth Service Selection screen, click the checkbox CHS7x and
click Finish. After the connection starts, the scanner will beep once, and
the LED will blink blue once every 3 seconds.

STEP 4: OPEN YOUR APPLICATION
1. Start the application that you want to feed scanned data into. Make sure
a document or spreadsheet is open.
Note: If you scan into Microsoft Word, if the first character of scanned data is a
letter, it will be capitalized by default.
2. Place the cursor where you want data from the next scan to be entered.
STEP 5: SCAN DATA INTO YOUR APPLICATION
1. Press the trigger button and aim the scanner at the barcode. The red
scanner beam should cover the entire width of the barcode. For example,
try scanning the barcode below:
Note: Press and hold the trigger button until either data is read and sent
to the computer (it may take a few seconds depending on distance,
lighting, barcode print quality, and other factors), or the scanning beam
turns off because no data was read. After data is read, the scanner will
beep once, the LED will flash green, and the beam will turn off. If no data
was read, you must try again.
Keep your hand steady when aiming to scan a barcode.
2. After a successful scan, data should appear in your document. By default,
the cursor automatically advances to the next cell or line, ready for the
next scan.
DISCONNECTING
To disconnect, turn off the scanner
Turning off the Bluetooth CHS
To turn off the Bluetooth CHS, press and hold the power button for at least 3
seconds, until the Bluetooth CHS beeps twice (high-low) and the blue LED
turns off.

4 | SETUP FOR WINDOWS MOBILE
This chapter explains how to install and use the Socket
Bluetooth Cordless Hand Scanner (CHS) with the SoMo 650
handheld computer or other device running Windows
Mobile or Windows CE.
Before you begin the instructions in this chapter,
make sure you have charged the scanner, as
described in Chapter 2, “Hardware Preparation.”
Note: No software installation is required for normal
operation.
STEP 1: TURN ON THE BLUETOOTH CHS
Press and hold the small power button for 3 seconds, or until the LED
turns blue and the scanner beeps twice (low - high).
The LED should blink blue once every second to show that the Bluetooth
radio is on but not connected.

STEP 2: CONFIGURE BLUETOOTH SETTINGS
Follow the instructions for the scenario you want to set up for.
1. Turn on your Bluetooth radio. Tap Start | Settings | Connections tab.
2. Tap on the Bluetooth icon.
3. Tap the Mode tab. Make sure the Turn on Bluetooth box is checked.
4. Tap on the Devices tab. Tap Add new device… or tap Add at the bottom of
the screen.
5. After the device search, select the Bluetooth CHS 7x, which will appear
as Socket CHS 7x [xxxxxx].
Note: The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the scanner’s
Bluetooth Device Address of the Bluetooth CHS.

6. If a passkey is requested, enter 0000 (four zeroes). Tap Next.
7. If you are prompted to Select services to use from the device, select the Input
Device check box and tap Finish. After the connection starts, the scanner will
beep once, and the Blue LED will blink once every 3 seconds.
STEP 3: OPEN YOUR APPLICATION
1. Start the application that you want to feed the barcode data into.
2. Place the cursor where you want data from the next scan to go.
STEP 4: SCAN DATA INTO YOUR APPLICATION
1. Press the trigger button and scan the barcode. For example, try scanning
the barcode below:

beep once, the LED will flash green, and the beam will turn off. If no data
