anexactA4size andless weightinanaim tosavethemostspace
possiblewhilemaintainingthehighestqualityscanningresultsas
well asqualityopticalresolutionat300 x600 dpi.
Usingthismanual
Thismanualincludescompleteinstructionsforscanner
installation,use,andmaintenance.Notethatse,Óinthis
context,referstoscanneroperationindependentofthetask
performedwiththeapplicationsoftware.Thisguideisorganized
inaoasyoureadÓformat.Forbestresults,performthetasksas
theyarepresented.
Thismanualassumesthatyouhaveabasicunderstandingofthe
DOSandWindowsoperatingsystem.Asaconvention,thisguide

TWAINistheinterface thatlinksthescannerwithscanning
softwareapplications.TWAINisanindustrystandardthatenables
youtousetheImageReaderwithanyTWAIN-compliantsoftware
application.
WiththeintroductionofWindows95,theTWAINspecification
hasbeenoverhauledtotakeadvantageofthe32-bitarchitecture.
YourscannerinstallationsoftwarecontainstwoTWAINsources
—oneforusingyourscannerwith16-bitapplications(i.e.
InfoCenterLite)andoneforusingyourscannerwith32-bit
applications(i.e.AdobePhotoshop).Usethefollowingasaguide
toselecttheappropriatesource.
16-bitapplicationsarelegacyWindows3.xprogramsthatyouare
runningunderWindows95.
32-bitapplicationsareprogramsspecificallydesignedfor
Windows95,totakeadvantageofperformance enhancements
providedbythenewarchitecture.
PleaseNote:Windows3.1xdoesnotsupport32-bitapplications,
thereforethe16-bitscanningsource shouldalwaysbeselected
whenrunningWindows3.1x.Youmayexperience scanning
problemsifyoudonotusetheappropriatesource.

Thescannerhardwarebyitselfisnotveryuseful.Ittakesa
combinationofthescannerhardwareandapplicationsoftwareto

performanytask.Beforescanning,youneedtochoosethe
appropriateapplication(s)touseforthetaskathand.Pleaseread
thissectiontogainanunderstandingofthetypesofscanning
softwarethereare.
Scanningsoftwaregenerallyfallsintotwogroups,Graphics
(imageediting),orOCR (OpticalCharacterRecognition).Each
typehasspecificfeaturesdesignedtoaddress thetechnical
challengesfacedinthescanningofgraphicsoroftext.
Graphics:Softwareprovidestheuserwithimageeditingtoolsfor
performingextensivemodificationstoart,photographs,orother
continuoustoneimages.Whilehavingtheabilitytoscantext,
unlikeOCR softwareitisnotdesignedtospecificallyidentify
individualcharacters.Anyimagescannedusingagraphics
programcanonlybesavedinagraphicsfileformat(i.e.Tiff or
Gif).Itcannotbesavedasaneditabletextfile.Yoursystem
softwareCDincludesiPhotoExpress imageeditingsoftwareto
facilitateyourimageeditingrequirements.
OCR:Softwareinthiscategoryisdesignedtorecognize
alphanumericcharactersinpreparationforexporttoword
processinganddesktoppublishingapplications.Inotherterms,it
createstextfiles.OCR softwarewill notprovideimageediting
capabilities.Ifthereisnointentionofeditingagivenpiece oftext
(withorwithoutgraphics),itmaybesimplertoscanandsaveitas
agraphic.OCR isoneofmanyscanningcontrolfeaturesincluded
intheInfoCenterapplicationsoftwareincludedonyoursystem
softwareCD.
Additionaltypesofapplicationsareavailablethatoffersolutions
forspecialoruniquetasks.Theseincludedocumentstorage,form
scanning,faxutilities,copyutilities,customscreensavercreation,
photoalbumcreation,andsoon.Ifapplicationsareintendedto
linkdirectlytothescanningdevice,lookfortheTWAIN-

compliantspecification.Ifcompliant,youmayusethese
applicationtoscanwithyourImageReaderscanner.

Systemrequirementsarelargelydependentonthe”workÓ
performed.Bywork,wearereferringtothetaskoroperation
performedusingthescannerinconjunctionwithapplication
software.
Becausescannersarecapableofinputtinglargeamountsofdatain
relativelyshortperiodsoftime,theycommonlypushcomputer
systemstothelimitsoftheircapabilities.Beforebeginningany
scanningtaskoroperation,carefullyconsideryoursystem
processingcapabilities,especiallyprocessorspeed,RAM,and
availableharddiskspace.OCR processes,faxoperations,andthe
processingofsimpleblack&whitegraphicsareleastdemanding.
Highresolutionscanningoflargeimagesinfull colorcreatesan
extremedemandforprocessortimeandmemory.
WhenyouarescanningwiththeTWAINinterface,thenumber
labeledimagesize (calculatedinbytes)providestheworkingfile
size thatistheresultoftheselectedscanningmode,resolution,
andimagesize.Takecarefulnoteofthisinformation.
