GENERAL PRESENTATION
When installed in line with these instruction, the product will be compliant with standards EN 13241-1,
EN 12453.
The instructions referred to in the installation manual and instructions for use of this product are
designed to prevent damage to property and personal injury along with compliance with the above
standards. Failure to comply with these instructions absolves Somfy from any liability resulting from
damage that may be caused.
FREEROLL is a product that must be installed inside the garage with an integrated back-up control
system (refer to the instructions of RDO CSI motors).
Somfy hereby declares that the device is compliant with the essential demands and other relevant
requirements of directive 1999/5/CE.
A declaration of compliance is available from the web site at www.somfy.com/ce (FREEROLL RTS).
This product is suitable for use in the European Union and in Switzerland.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1. Caution
These are important safety instructions. Always follow the instructions, incorrect installation may lead
to serious injury.
2. Safety instructions
Refer to the rolling door and RDO CSI motor safety instructions before installing the control receiver
unit.
To prevent undesired operation by children, locate all control systems at least 1.5 meter above floor
level, making sure that they are visible from the entrance to the garage but safe from moving parts.

2. Type of door
Rolling garage door only for residential use.
POINTS TO CHECK PRIOR TO INSTALLATION
1. Preliminary checks
Never splash water onto the system and never install FREEROLL in a location where water may
cause damage.
The bottom edge of the door should be fitted with a safety edge device compatible with the
FREEROLL solution.
If the garage door is the only entry point into the garage, fit an external release for using the crank and
the manual override of the RDO CSI motor.
If the garage door opens on to a public road, we recommend the installation of a warning light, such as
the Somfy orange warning light (ref. 9011084).
Make sure that the door does not comprise of any accessible parts.
2. Safety instructions
Safety instructions must be complied with throughout the installation process:
. Take off any personal jewellery (bracelet, chain or others) during installation work.
. During drilling and welding work, always wear safety glasses and suitable protection.
. Always use suitable tools.
. Take care when handling the motor drive system.
. Never connect the Mains power supply before completing the installation process.
. Never use high pressure water systems for cleaning purposes.

QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE
Warning ! From Step 1 to Step 3, you must use a test lead to operate the rolling garage door.
Do not connect the FREEROLL control unit until the end-limits have been set.
1. Set Motor end-limits
Set the UP and DOWN end-limits of the RDO CSI motor with a test lead (not-provided).
Refer to the motor instruction guide.
2. Position the TOP and BOTTOM Magnets on the door guide

on the same side of the door

Place the back of the Safety Edge Transmitter against
the bottom slat of the door respecting the space of
10
mm maximum with the edge of the guide.
Warning! The Magnets are used to activate and
deactivate the safety edge.
They must be positioned as indicated and
never
removed (autonomy and safety managements).
Fit the TOP Magnet: the door must be in the OPEN end
-
limit position. Remove the backing strip and screw the
magnet on the guide respecting the distance (height) of
50 mm minimum and aligning with the edge of the guide.
Fit the BOTTOM Magnet:
the door must be in the
CLOSED end-
limit position. Remove the backing strip
and screw the magnet on the guide respecting the
alignment with the Safety Edge Transmitter.

4. FREEROLL RTS: Fit the unit to the wall and wire the control unit
. Fit the FREEROLL unit to wall.
. Unplug the test lead from the motor.
. Connect the 4-wires from the motor to the FREEROLL (refer to wiring diagram).
. Connect the FREEROLL to the Mains.
. Fit the cover.
5. Wire and Fit the Safety Edge Transmitter
. Connect the resistive safety edge connector to the 2 pin connector on the board of the Safety Edge
Transmitter cover.
. Fit the cover of the Safety Edge Transmitter.
6. Commissioning
. Press the button on the cover to move the door to the open end-limit position.
. Press the button on the cover to close the door completely without pressing the safety edge.
. Then reopen pressing the button.
. Press the button on the cover to close the door and test that the safety edge is working simulating
an obstacle.
THE COMMISSIONING PHASE IS COMPLETE – THE FREEROLL RTS CONTROL SYSTEM IS
NOW READY-TO-USE.

FULL INSTALLATION
Warning! From Step 1 to Step 3, you must use a test lead to operate the rolling garage door.
Do not connect the FREEROLL control unit until the end-limits have been set.
1. Set Motor end-limits
Test lead (ex. Ref. 9686027)
Set the UP and DOWN end-limits of the RDO CSI motor
with
a test lead (not-provided) connected as mentioned above.
Refer to the motor instruction guide.
Remove the protective cover from the end-
limit switch
housing.
Set the UP end-limit switch in accordance with the R
DO
CSI motor instructions.
Set the DOWN end-limit switch
in accordance with the RDO
CSI motor instructions.
Replace the end-limit switch protective cover.


Standard connections for right hand
mount and rolling door cover internal

2. Position the TOP and BOTTOM Magnets on the door guide
Warning! Position the Magnets, the Safety Edge Transmitter and the FREEROLL control unit on
the same side of the door
Remove the Safety Edge Transmitter from the box.
Place the back of the Safety Edge Transmitter
against the
bottom slat of the door
. If needed, adjust the back of the
Safety Edge Transmitter respecting the given dimensions
(photo).
Feed the cable from the safety edge through the hole and
secure the back of the Transmitter to the door with the screws
provided. The flat edge of t
he Transmitter must be
mounted within 10 mm maximum of the guide where the
magnets are to be fixed.
Warning! The Magnets are used to activate and
deactivate the safety edge.
They must be positioned as mentioned below and
never
removed (autonomy and safety managements).
To position the TOP Magnet, position the rolling garage
door at its top end-limit. Measure down
50 mm minimum
from the bottom of the back of the Safety Edge Transmitter.
The TOP Magnet housing should be placed flush with the
edge of the guide (See photo).
Clean the area first with the wipe supplied and allow to dry.
Fix the TOP Magnet to the guide using the adhesive pad
provided and secure it with the 2 fixing screws provided.
To position the BOTTOM Magnet, close the door
to the
down end-limit.
Align both Transmitter and BOTTOM
Magnet.
The BOTTOM Magnet housing should be placed flush with
the edge of the guide.
Clean the area first with the wipe supplied and allow to dry.
Fix the BOTTOM Magnet to the guide using the adhesive
pad provided and secure it with the 2 fixing screws provided.

Carefully remove the control unit from its box.
Remove the light cover from the top of the unit by pressing in at the
bottom on both sides (see arrows) and lifting it away from the unit. The
front cover can now be lifted a few centimetres clear of the unit.
While holding the front cover
, push the LED from the front side of the
cover until it exits at the back.
Unplug the front cover buttons connector lead from the circuit board
socket, gripping it firmly between finger and thumb. Plac
e the lid to one
side.

b. Wiring of the control unit
Refer to the page 42 for the general electrical diagram (with accessories).
Disconnect the motor from the test
lead.
Warning! Check that the FREEROLL
is not connected to the Mains.
Connect the 4-
wires from the motor to
the FREEROLL terminals
as indicated
opposite.
Take the two aerials from the packaging and connect them to the unit
(See entry point and terminals in top left hand corner). Make sure that the
aerials are not touching and that they po
int in opposite directions (one up
and one down parallel with the side of the control unit).
Hold the control unit against the wall and mark the position of the fixing
holes. Using the installation kit (other hardware might be necessary
depending on the wall material), secure the control unit to the wall.
The unit must be installed with the courtesy light holder at the top.
Warning! The distance from the control unit to the Safety Edge
Transmitter must be less than 4 meters.
Warning! The FREEROLL control unit is supplied with a
2.50 meters
supply cable
. Try to ensure that a power socket is situated within
this distance.
Reminder! Mount the unit on the same side of the door as the Safety
Edge Transmitter and Magnets.

5. Wire and fit wire the Safety Edge Transmitter
Attach the socket to the connector pins on the
circuit board.
Warning! Check carefully that the 2 pin
are
connected.
As it is not polarized, there is no specific way to
connect it.
Fit the fr
ont cover of the transmitter to the back with
the screws provided.
Warning! Do not use a power screwdriver or
use excessive force or you may damage the
printed circuit board.
Warning! You do not have to program the
Safety Edge Transmitter as it is factory pre
-
programmed.
Nevertheless, if you have mixed products from
different kits, please refer to the
troubleshooting guide pages 38 and 39 and
follow the procedure to program the Safety
Edge Transmitter again.
Re-
connect the front cover buttons connector lead to
the circuit
board socket and the LED into the cover as
illustrated in the pictures.
Warning! The control buttons will not function
correctly if the connector is connected the wrong
way.
NB: The cover LED connects to the white 3 pin terminal
block on the printed circuit board.
NB: Ensure all switches on DIP 1 are off (down) and
that the LED is solid GREEN.
Fit the cover.
Fit the light bulb in its holder.
Connect the FREEROLL to the Mains.
 The control unit beeps
 The cover LED goes RED, AMBER, GREEN twice.
 The cover LED goes SOLID GREEN.

6. Commission the safety edge
AT THIS STAGE OF THE INSTALLATION PROCESS, THE FREEROLL RTS CONTROL SYSTEM
IS NOW READY-TO-USE.
PROGRAMMING
Warning! The remote controls provided with the kit are factory pre-programmed on the left first
channel button.
They can be directly used to control the rolling garage door.
Add new remote controls
Up to 36 control channels can be stored.
Running this procedure for a previously stored channel will clear it.
Add a Keytis or similar remote controls

Warning! It is crucial to respect the following procedure to
secure the functioning of the door.
Open the door fully pressing the button on the cover.
Close the door fully pressing the button on the cover.
Warning! If t
he cover buttons do not work properly, the
connector lead may be plugged in the wrong way
Warning! At this stage do not press the safety edge
Re-open the door fully pressing the button on the cover.
Re-close the door pressing the button on the cover
and test
during the closing that the safety edge is working by pressing it.
If the safety edge is active, the door will stop and reverse partially.
If not, stop the door (STOP button) manually and please refer to the
troubleshooting guide page 38.
Push the « RTS Prog

inside the FREEROLL for 3

OPERATING TEST
1. Use the remote controls
2. Obstacle detection function
The detection of excessive weight during door opening will stop the door (anti-lift function)
Warning! The torque of the motor must be selected according the size and weight of the rolling
garage door.
The detection of an obstacle during door closure will stop and partially re-open the door.
Make sure that the obstacle detection works when the door encounters an obstacle 50 mm from the
ground.
3. Integral lighting operation
The light will come on every time the control unit is operated. It will go out automatically after 2
minutes once the door stops.

2. Electrical connections for the various peripherals
Warning! Switch off the electric power supply to the control unit before connecting any
peripherals.
Refer to the general electrical diagram page 42.
a. Orange Warning Light
The Orange Warning Light must be connected in parallel with the integral lamp.
The Orange Warning Light will come on with a 2 sec warning every time the control unit is
operated. It will go out automatically after 2 minutes once the door stops.
b. Reflex Photo-electric Cells
Remove the link between T17 – T18.

Two types of connections can be made:
Standard (without self test) With self test
Necessity to check correct functioning every 6
months
Push Switch 1 of the block DIP 1 to the ON
position (PEC self-check software on; cf.
SETTINGS part page 37).
This means that an automatic test is conducted to
check cell operation every time the door operates. If
the test fails, no door movement is possible.
Position of the DIP switches on the cell:
Without self test: DIP switch1 and DIP switch2 on ON
With self test: DIP switch1 on ON and DIP switch2 on OFF

Connection to the control unit
The alarm must be wired to the control unit. The red sheathed cable is wired to T10 and the black
sheathed cable is wired to T16.
If a photo-electric cell is also wired to the control unit, the photo-electric cell must be wired in
standard mode (without self-test).
Alarm activation
Warning! The door must be fully open.
To activate the alarm, push and hold the S-E-C button until the amber LED (above the button) goes
from flashing to solid.
The alarm sounds for five minutes if the roller is lifted manually above the BOTTOM Magnet. To reset
the alarm press the button on a remote control. The rolling garage door will start moving in the up
direction.

Warning! To validate and take into account the new settings
for the Switch 1 of DIP1 and all the switches of DIP 2, press
the RESET button on the top of the electronic board.

Press the « RTS Prog » button inside the FREEROLL until the light blinks (7 s).
This clears all of the remote controls memorised.

TROUBLESHOOTING
1. System Status Indication
The cover control unit LED indicates the status of the control unit and rolling door.
The cover LED is a three-colour: RED, GREEN and AMBER lamp mounted on the front of the control
unit. The status indications are detailed below:

Door opening.
SOLID RED Close end-limit activated.
SLOW FLASHING RED Door closing.
SOLID AMBER Door stationary between open and close
end-limits.
Programming Mode

alternately Unit timed out during processing. You need to press the stop
button.
AMBER rapid flashing Receiver unit in programming mode (Switch 4 of DIP 1 is ON)

1. Remove any obstacles that may be in the doorway
(once you have removed the obstacle the signal light will
change to SOLID AMBER).
2. Ensure the photocell and reflector are clean.
3. Re-align the photo cell and reflector.
4. Turn Switch 1 of DIP 1 OFF.
5. Replace the link between T17 and T18.
RED flash then 2 AMBER flashes
A motor stall has been detected (anti-lift
function)
1. Disengage optional manual locking device.
2. Remove any objects which may have jammed in the
guide rails, curtain or roll.
3. Ensure nobody is attempting to ride up on the curtain.
4. Ensure a non-approved item has not been attached to
the curtain.
5. In extreme conditions the door may have frozen to the
guide rails or floor.
Try to operate the door again or defrost the frozen
section.
6. Check that the motor is the correct size and capable of
raising the roller shutter door.
RED flash then 3 AMBER flashes
The thermal trip has activated on the motor
or the motor is not connected.
1. Allow the motor to cool for approximately 30 minutes
before attempting to operate the door again.
2. The motor may not be connected to the remote control
unit. Check wiring and re-set the motor limits.
RED flash then 4 AMBER flashes
Door overrun time out; the door has been
opening or closing for over 60 seconds
without detecting a final end limit position.
1. Re-set the motor limits.
2. If the motor limits cannot be set the motor may be
faulty.

System Status

Indicates that a signal has been received
from a transmitter that has not been loaded
onto the system.
Load the transmitter on to the system as per the

1. Check the PEC wiring.
2. Check that PEC has self-check facility.
Long AMBER then 3 short RED flashes
The roller shutter door limits are set on top
of one another.
Swap the brown and the black wires of the motor.
Long RED then short RED flash Check link between T11 and T12 on the terminal.
Reduced operating range
Batteries in transmitter are flat.
Aerials may not be fitted to remote control
unit.
Aerials may be touching.
1. Transmitter LED does not illuminate
when flat and if batteries low it flashes when button
pressed. Replace batteries.
2. Ensure aerials are not touching; replace aerials if
they are missing.
3. The door can be closed by pressing and holding a
close button. Release the button once the door is
fully closed.
The door stops automatically after the
bottom edge of the door has passed the
TOP Magnet when the door is closing
(this only applies when bottom slat
safety edge is installed).
1. Signal interference.
2. Aerials are touching or have been
removed.
3. The TOP Magnet is missing or in wrong
location.
4. Fault detected in safety edge circuit.
1. A local device(a wireless HI-FI helmet, a PIR
detector, weather station or TV signal booster…) is
transmitting on the same frequency. The receiver will
wait for the signal to stop before operating the door.
2. Ensure aerials are not touching.
3. Follow instructions for positioning and fitting top
magnet.
4. If the bottom slat transmitter is flashing 6 or 8
times, contact your supplier.
2. Program the Safety Edge Transmitter
The STOP and CLOSE (Down) buttons used are on the electronic
board.
a. Delete the Safety Edge Transmitter
1. Remove the cover of the FREEROLL unit and follow the
procedure with the control unit idle (no door movement).
2. Put Switch 4 of DIP 1 ON.
 The cover LED flashes AMBER.
CLOSE
STOP

3. Push and hold the CLOSE (down) button, the cover LED will go:
Warning! Release the button WHILE the LED is SOLID GREEN
FLASHING RED - SOLID RED (5 sec) - SOLID AMBER (2 sec) - SOLID GREEN (2 sec).
 The Safety Edge Transmitter is deleted. If successful, it should flash RED-AMBER-GREEN.
To confirm the Safety Edge Transmitter has been deleted, if you try and delete again the first LED
stage is FLASHING GREEN.
b. Learn the Safety Edge Transmitter
1. Make sure the Magnets are correctly fixed on the guides.
2. Make sure there is no Safety Edge Transmitter loaded by setting Switch 4 of DIP 1 to
the ON position, then pressing the CLOSE (down) button.
 The cover LED should be FLASHING GREEN to indicate no Safety Edge Transmitter loaded.
Warning! If LED is FLASHING RED then you need to delete the Safety Edge Transmitter
following the procedure above.
3. Press the STOP button
 The cover LED should flash AMBER.
4. Press the CLOSE (down) button
 The cover LED on FREEROLL will be FLASHING GREEN for learning the Safety Edge
Transmitter on to the FREEROLL.
5. Press the DECOMM button on the back of the Safety Edge Transmitter board 5 times
 On each press the LED on the front of the Safety Edge Transmitter will flash each time until this
LED stays ON solid for 4 sec and will then flash dimly for 7 sec before turning off.
Warning! The Safety Edge Transmitter must be connected to the safety edge with the 2 pins
connector.
 Watch the cover LED on FREEROLL and it will change from FLASHING GREEN to SOLID
GREEN for 2 sec and this is the confirmation that the Safety Edge Transmitter has been
successfully learnt.
 The cover LED on FREEROLL will revert to FLASHING AMBER.
6. Then set Switch 4 of DIP 1 to the OFF position.
