This device has been manufactured according to the state of the art of technology.
Recognized safety-related rules and standards were observed in this process.
The device must nevertheless be operated properly and carefully at all times.
Incorrect operation can put the user and other persons in danger. Damage to the device,
environment and material assets is also possible.
Use the device only
- if it is not damaged
- for the purpose for which it is defined
(see "Intended use" chapter)
- in accordance with these operating instructions.
3.1 Intended Use
Terminal boxes 8150/1 (increased safety) and 8150/2 (intrinsic safety) are exclusively
intended for distributing electrical energy and/or electrical signals. They are explosion-
protected equipment.
The terminal boxes are produced in different sizes. They can be combined with each other
to produce larger distribution units.
"Intended use" includes complying with these operating instructions and the other applicable
documents, e.g. the data sheet.
3.2 Personnel Qualification
All activities on the device may only be performed by a qualified specialist. This primarily
applies to work in the following areas:
• Product selection, project engineering and modification
• Mounting/dismounting the device
• Installation
• Commissioning
• Maintenance, repair, cleaning
The specialist who performs these activities must be familiar with the relevant national
standards and regulations for electrical engineering.
Additional knowledge is required for activities in hazardous areas! R. STAHL recommends
having a level of knowledge equal to that described in the following standards:
•UL 60079-17 (Electrical Installations Inspection and Maintenance)
•National Electrical Code (NEC NFPA 70 Article 504 or ISA-RP 12.6)
•Canadian Electrical Code (CEC Part 1, Appendix F)
The nature of these instructions is only informative and does not cover all of the details,
variations or combinations in which this equipment may be used, its storage, delivery,
installation, safe operation and maintenance.
Since conditions of use of the product are outside of the care, custody and control of
the manufacturer, the purchaser should determine the suitability of the product for his
intended use, and assumes all risk and liability whatsoever in connection therewith.

3.3 Residual Risks
3.3.1 Explosion Hazard
Explosion hazards cannot be entirely eliminated in hazardous areas.
Perform all activities in hazardous areas with the utmost care at all times!
Possible hazards ("residual risks") can be categorized according to their cause:
Damage to the device
The device may be warped, dented or scratched during transport, mounting or
commissioning. This can cause it to no longer be leak-tight. A lack of leak-tightness can
render the device's explosion protection partially or completely ineffective.
This may result in explosions causing serious or fatal injuries to persons.
To prevent this, comply with the following safety measures:
Before transport or mounting, determine the weight of the device – see specifications on
the packaging.
Only use transport and lifting equipment that can reliably bear the size and weight of the
device.
Transport the device only in its original packaging or in equivalent packaging.
Check the packaging and the device for damage. Report any damage to R. STAHL
immediately.
Store the device in its original packaging in a dry place (with no condensation), and make
sure that it is stable and protected against the effects of vibrations and knocks.
Do not damage the enclosure, built-in components and seals during mounting.
Too much heating or electrostatic charge
A subsequent conversion or painting can change the state of the device in such a way that it
is no longer explosion-protected. Improper cleaning can also cause the device to heat up
severely or become electrostatically charged. This can cause sparks. This may result in
explosions causing serious or fatal injuries to persons. To prevent this, comply with the
following safety measures:
Commission the device within the prescribed operating conditions only
(see the label on the device and the "Technical data" chapter).
Only have the device painted or coated by the manufacturer.
Do not have the paintwork touched up by anyone other than the manufacturer.
We recommend providing a protective roof or wall for any device that is operated outdoors
or exposed to weathering.
Regularly inspect the device for a material change (plastic).
If any changes are identified, test or replace the device.
Only attach additional adhesive labels made of plastic according to the surface
specifications in UL 60079-0.
Observe the maximum number of conductors (see chapter 5.3).
Terminals can be added within the physical limits of the enclosure (see catalogue)
and the thermal limits as explained in chapter 5.3.1.
Wires/cables shall be rated for min. 75 °C/167 °F.

Lack of leak-tightness (impairment of IP protection)
The IP degree of protection identifies how equipment must be sealed according to
regulations.
Making structural modifications, e.g. drilled holes, or improper mounting can impair the
device's IP protection. This may result in explosions causing serious or fatal injuries to
persons.
Only drill holes for cable entries exactly according to the instructions in the
"Product selection, project engineering and modification" and "Mounting" chapters of
these operating instructions. Consult with R: STAHL first if there are any discrepancies or
uncertainties.
Install the device only in the prescribed mounting position. More detailed explanations of
this can be found in the "Mounting" chapter.
Conduit entries may be field installed in these enclosures per the instructions in
chapter 6.2.1.
For a Class I, Zone 1 conduit installation, conduit seals are required, refer to
NEC 505.16 (B) (1). For any other cable or conduit installation NO seals are required.
Use only approved wiring methods for the location, with the associate cable/conduit
fittings. Reference your local code.
Improper installation, commissioning and maintenance
The work listed above may only be performed in accordance with the current national
regulations of the country of use. Otherwise, the explosion protection may be rendered
ineffective. This may result in explosions causing serious or fatal injuries to persons.
To prevent this, comply with the following safety measures:
Have mounting, installation, commissioning and maintenance performed only by qualified
and authorised persons (see Chapter 3.2).
Only make modifications to the device in accordance with the directions in these operating
instructions. Have R. STAHL or a certified test body (third-party inspection) carry out
acceptance testing on any modifications made.
Perform maintenance and repairs on the device only using original spare parts.
Consult R. STAHL beforehand.

3.3.2 Risk of Injury
Falling devices or components
During transport or mounting, the heavy device or components can fall. They can crush or hit
people, causing severe injury. To prevent this, comply with the following safety measures:
Before transport or mounting, observe the weight of the device – see specifications on the
packaging.
Only use transport and lifting equipment that can reliably bear the size and weight of the
device.
Use suitable mounting material for mounting.
Electric shock
During operation, high voltages may sometimes be present at the device.
Contact with live components can cause severe electric shock and injury to persons.
Operate the device only on equipment with the internal voltage specified in the
"Technical data" chapter.
Only connect electrical circuits to suitable terminals.
Disconnect the power supply before installing or servicing these devices.
4 Transport and Storage
Transport and store the device carefully and in accordance with the safety notes
(see "Safety" section).
DANGER! Explosion due to damaged seal in devices with enclosure hinges!
Non-compliance may result in serious or even fatal injury.
Devices with enclosure hinges must be transported only with a transport lock.

The installation conditions (see "Mounting" and "Installation" chapters) and specifications on
the rating plate must be complied with. Therefore:
Check whether enough cable entries are provided. Create additional drilled holes if
necessary, see chapter 5.1.
Equip terminals and, if necessary, mount built-in components; see chapter 5.3.
To change or equip the terminal boxes later, the following options are available:
• Additional drilled holes on the flange plate, either by R. STAHL (chapter 5.1.1) or by the
customer (chapter 5.1.2.1)
• Additional drilled holes in the enclosure either by R. STAHL (chapter 5.1.1) or by the
customer (chapter 5.1.2.2)
• External add-on components either by R. STAHL or by the customer (chapter 5.2)
• Internal built-in components either by R. STAHL or by the customer (chapter 5.3)
DANGER! Explosion if the device is painted after receipt from the
manufacturer.
Non-compliance may result in serious or even fatal injuries.
Do not paint the device.
Do not have the paintwork touched up by anyone other than the manufacturer.
DANGER! Explosion due to defective sealing of the device!
Non-compliance may result in serious or even fatal injuries.
Attach plates without making any additional drilled holes.
Equip the enclosure only with suitable components (e.g. cable entries, stopping
plugs, drain valves or breathers) that is verifiably approved for use in hazardous
areas and meets the requirements of the IP protection rating.
Examples: US EC Type Examination Certificate or IECEx Certificate of Conformity
Observe the operating instructions from the manufacturers of the components and
seals that are to be installed.
Only seal unused cable entries with stopping plugs that have been approved for
the type of protection.
Seal all open drilled holes by means of suitable components.
NOTICE!
Non-compliance can result in material damage.
Acceptance testing for work you performed must be carried out in accordance
with national regulations. Otherwise, you must have R. STAHL or a test body
(third-party inspection) (Chapter 3.3.1) carry out acceptance testing. This can be done
by R. STAHL on request for a corresponding quotation. If the work is carried out by
R. STAHL, no additional acceptance is necessary.

5.1 Additional Drilled Holes
5.1.1 Additional Drilled Holes by R. STAHL
Give the following information to R. STAHL:

5.1.2 Have the Customer create additional Drilled Holes

Observe the following conditions when doing so:
Leave enough distance to the circumferential seal (min. 2 mm/0.08 inches)
(see detail in figure).
Leave enough distance to the earth connection (min. 10 mm / 0.39 inches)
(see bottom of figure).
Modify the device carefully and only in accordance with the safety information
(see "Safety" chapter).
Calculate the usable area.
Create additional drilled holes through lasing or punching (drilling, hole cutting).
When punching and cutting, make sure that the outer surfaces of the enclosure remain flat
and undamaged (without cracks).
Determine the core hole diameter for threads. Do not use an NPT thread!
Observe the mounting distances when creating the drilled holes.
Adjust the hole diameters to the dimensions of the built-in parts or their seals.
ONLY use built-in components with flat seal (gasket).
Observe chapter 5.2 when subsequently equipping components!
If the technical data has changed, e.g. due to the components that are to be additionally
installed, attach the new rating plate with the current values.
5.1.2.2 Enclosure
Calculate the usable area for cable entries in the enclosure
The calculation is performed in three steps:
Calculate the total usable area
Calculate the required area for cable entries
Calculate the remaining usable area.
Important for the following calculation:
Measure the dimensions on the plane surface inside of the enclosure
(not on the outside of the enclosure)
Consider additional space required for blind rivet nuts. The space requirement for the
built-in part is determined using the width across corners of the cable entry plus
additional space for the tool.

5.2 External Attached Components

5.2.1 Fitting of Attached Components by R. STAHL
Give the following information to R. STAHL:

- Quantity, manufacturers and approvals of the components that are to be attached.
- Type of protection

• will mount the components
• will update the order documentation
• will carry out a routine test
• will attach a new rating plate if the technical data has changed.
5.2.2 Fitting of Attached Components by the Customer
Selecting add-on components
We recommend fitting the following add-on components to the enclosure:
Cable entry
• For electrical lines that are permanently installed: Cable entries for electrical lines that are
permanently installed
• For electrical lines that are not permanently installed: Cable entries with strain relief.
Sealing unused entries
• Use stopping plugs that comply with the type of protection required.
Draining and equalising pressure
• Breather.
Equip the device carefully and in accordance with the safety notes (see "Safety" chapter).
Refer to the specifications on the device's rating plate to help you determine which
components and seals to use and what operating temperatures they will need to be able
to withstand.
Calculate the usable area (collision frame) for add-on components, see Chapter 5.1.2 and
5.2.2.
Make the diameter of the drilled holes match the dimensions of the built-in parts or their
seals.
The use of add-on components with a flat seal (gasket) is preferred.
Drilled holes are generally fitted with the components intended for the application at the
factory.
If customers intend to fit the components in the holes themselves, dust and transport
protection is provided for the openings in the enclosure (adhesive tape with a warning
note or plastic caps) at the factory.

5.3 Internal Built-in Components
Ascertaining the maximum number of conductors
5.3.1 Determine the Number of Conductors using the US EC Type Examination Certificate
The maximum permissible number of conductors can be read out of the table in the
US EC Type Examination Certificate for the type. Output data is the current load [in A]
and the conductor cross-section [in mm2/AWG]
Example: Enclosure 8150
Heat is generated in each terminal box. It is generated due to contact resistance at the
clamping units and due to the electrical lines installed in the enclosure.
However, the maximum permissible temperature of the terminal box must not be
exceeded! As a result, the current loads for the electrical circuits and therefore the
maximum permissible number of conductors must be observed.
To correctly use the specified number of conductors, please note:
Each inserted conductor and each internal connection conductor must be counted
individually.
Jumpers and protective conductors do not count.
