Yes. The general duties imposed by The Health and Safety at Work et A t 1974 supported
by Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) regulations 5&10)
mean that you are obliged to keep your lift in safe working order. This means you must
arrange for regular maintenan e of your lift.

Yes. Regulation 9 of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
(LOLER) requires that a lift undergoes an inspe tion/thorough examination by a ompetent
person at regular intervals (twi e a year for passenger lifts, on e for goods lifts or
a ording to the lifts’ situation) and applies to all lifts and lifting equipment used at work.

You should arrange for the lift to be maintained (regularly servi ed and kept in good
repair) and, if the lift is in a pla e of work, thoroughly examined at intervals in line with
legislation.

Maintenan e is the regular servi ing of the lift, en ompassing the routine adjustment to
omponents, repla ement of worn or damaged parts, topping up of fluids and so on, and
should be arried out by an experien ed and ompetent lift ompany, su h as Stannah Lift
Servi es. Maintenan e is arried out to ensure the lift runs effi iently and safely.
Thorough Examination

Thorough Examination is the systemati and detailed visual inspe tion of the lift and all its
asso iated equipment and would usually be arried out by a third party, or an appointed
‘ ompetent person’. Thorough Examination provides a good he k that maintenan e is
being arried out properly. It fo uses entirely on the safety of the equipment.

Supplementary Testing of In-Servi e Lifts published by SAFed. Thorough Examination may
also be referred to as Form 54 or F54 inspe tion – the ode given to the form pres ribed
by repealed Fa tories A ts. Although no longer pres ribed, the term remains in use. Other
ommon terms used are: periodi inspe tion, statutory inspe tion (be ause it is required by
law) or insuran e inspe tion (inspe tions are often on behalf of insuran e ompanies).
