1.2 Service Information
A thorough preventive maintenance program is essential to safe and proper sterilizer operation. Comprehensive
instructions for routine preventive maintenance are in the operator manual.
You are encouraged to contact STERIS concerning our annual maintenance agreement. Under the terms of this
agreement, preventive maintenance, adjustments and replacement of worn parts are done on a scheduled basis to
assure equipment performance at peak capability and to help avoid untimely or costly interruptions. STERIS maintains a
global staff of well equipped, factory-trained technicians to provide this service, as well as expert repair services. Please
contact your STERIS representative for details.
1.3 Advisory
This equipment is specifically designed to only process goods using the cycles as specified in this manual. If there is any
doubt about a specific material or product, contact the manufacturer of that product for the recommended processing
technique.
A summary of the safety precautions to be observed when operating and servicing this equipment is include in the
manual. All operators and department heads must carefully review and become familiar with the warnings, cautions
and instructions contained in this manual. These instructions are important to the health and safety of personnel
operating the equipment and should be retained in a conveniently accessible area for quick reference.
Alteration of the equipment, not authorized or performed by STERIS Service Engineering, voids the warranty and could
adversely affect sterilization efficacy, violate national, state and local regulations and jeopardize insurance coverage.
To help ensure operators are adequately trained in the safe use of the equipment, STERIS recommends initial training
and periodic proficiency training of all personnel concerned with the operation and maintenance of the equipment; that
attendance records be maintained; and that evidence of understanding can be demonstrated.
Serious incidents that have occurred in relation to this medical device should be reported to the manufacturer and
competent authority in the country where the incident occurred.
1.4 Sterilizer Safety Devices
A door lock mechanism, pressure relief system and door obstruction switches are built into the sterilizer.
The AMSCO 600 sterilizer is equipped with pneumatic door locks which automatically lock the sterilizer door (s) when
closed. The door locks prevent the door(s) from opening under pressure or when compressed air is not present due to
utility failure.
Should pressure become too high, doors remain closed and pressure is relieved through a relief valve, as follows:
• Chamber Relief Valve, opens at 310.3 kPa (3.1 bar)
• Steam Generator (Integral Electric), opens at 689.5 kPa (6.9 bar)
• Jacket Relief valve, opens at 248.2 kPa (2.5 bar)
An additional safety feature is that of the door obstruction switch. This component is a pressure-sensitive linear switch,
which activates when an obstruction is sensed. If the pressure-sensitive linear switch activates during a door close
command, the system alarms, the door automatically reverses travel and returns to its fully open position.

1.5 Intended Use and Clinical Benefit
The AMSCO 600 Steam Sterilizer is intended for sterilization of heat and moisture-stable materials used in healthcare
facilities.
The sterilizers are generally operated by technicians in a central service or sterile processing department of healthcare
facilities.
The AMSCO 600 Steam Sterilizer provides a sterilization process with appropriate microbicidal activity intended to
sterilize medical devices. The sterilization process is both reliable and reproducible so that predictions can be made,
with reasonable confidence, that there is a low level of probability of there being a viable microorganism present on a
medical device after sterilization.
The sterilizers are equipped with the following factory-programmed cycles:

2.2 Safety Precautions
The following Safety Precautions must be observed when operating or servicing this equipment.
• WARNING indicates the potential for personal injury.
• CAUTION indicates the potential for damage to equipment.
For emphasis, certain Safety Precautions are repeated throughout the manual. It is important to review all Safety
Precautions before operating or servicing the unit.
Strictly following these Safety Precautions enhances the Customer’s ability to safely and effectively utilize the unit and
helps avoid improper maintenance methods which may damage the unit or render it unsafe. It is important to
understand that these Safety Precautions are not exhaustive; Customers are encouraged to develop their own safety
policies and procedures to enhance and complement these Safety Precautions.
IMPORTANT: Read this document to get the best understanding and to help ensure best performance of this equipment, which
has been thoroughly inspected, tested and adjusted by factory-trained personnel. Equipment operation or maintenance other
than described in the manual (unless by authorized representatives of the STERIS Corporation), shall be at the risk of
invalidating the equipment warranty.
WARNING
ELECTRIC SHOCK AND BURN HAZARD
Disconnect all utilities to sterilizer before servicing. Do not service the sterilizer unless all utilities have
been properly locked out. Always follow local Lockout-Tagout and electrical safety-related work practice
standards.
Do not open the control power box. The control power box contains no user-serviceable parts and
presents an electric shock hazard. Do not service the sterilizer unless all utilities have been properly
locked out. Always follow local Lockout-Tagout and electrical safety-related work practice standards.
Do not use the single phase power switch to isolate power. The single-phase power switch (located on
front face of control power box) isolates single-phase power only; three phase power is not affected by
this switch. Disconnect all utilities to sterilizer before servicing. Do not service the sterilizer unless all
utilities have been properly locked out. Always follow local Lockout-Tagout and electrical safety-related
work practice standards.

WARNING
BURN HAZARD
Sterilizer, rack/shelves and loading car will be hot after cycle is run. Always wear protective gloves and
apron when removing a processed load. Protective gloves and apron must be worn when reloading
sterilizer following the previous operation.
Wear heat-protective gloves and apron prior to cleaning the chamber drain strainer.
Failure to shut off the steam supply when cleaning or replacing strainers can result in serious injury.
Jacket pressure must be 0 kPa (0 mbar) before beginning work on the steam trap.
Steam may be released from the chamber when door is opened. Step back from the sterilizer each time
the door is opened to minimize contact with steam vapor.
Emergency Door Opening Procedure should only be performed by properly trained personnel. Prior to
performing the procedure review all WARNINGS and CAUTIONS associated with the sterilizer and review
the facilities Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures, which must meet or exceed local Standards. Failure to do so
can lead to serious injury.
After manual exhaust, steam may remain inside the chamber. Always wear protective gloves, apron, and
a face shield when following emergency procedure to unload sterilizer. Stay as far back from the chamber
opening as possible when opening the door.
Allow sterilizer to cool to room temperature before performing chamber cleaning.
WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY HAZARD AND/OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE HAZARD
Do Not Test Safety Valves – Sterilizer safety valves are factory tested to ensure proper operation.
Sterilizer safety valves should not be retested due to the likely-hood that they will not fully re-seat.
Safety valves must be replaced yearly by qualified service personnel. Should a safety valve release, stay
clear of the sterilizer as exhaust from the valve will be hot and could cause severe burns. Should a safety
valve release, the valve must be replaced by qualified service personnel.
The performance of the sterilizer is validated as a system including components defined by STERIS in the
Operator and Maintenance Manuals for the sterilizer. Substitution of unauthorized components can
potentially lead to personal injury, damage or premature failure of the product and result in a unit
configuration that is inconsistent with the validated product. STERIS warranty is void if components are
used that are not approved. DO NOT USE components that are not validated as part of the sterilizer.

Repairs and adjustments to this equipment must be made only by STERIS or STERIS-trained personnel.
Maintenance performed by unqualified personnel or installation of unauthorized parts could cause
personal injury, result in improper equipment performance, void the warranty or result in costly damage.
Contact STERIS regarding service options.
Turn off steam and vent jacket to 0 kPa (0 mbar) prior to servicing the steam pressure regulating valve.
Regularly scheduled preventive maintenance is required for safe and reliable operation of this equipment.
Contact your STERIS service representative to schedule preventive maintenance.
When closing the chamber door, keep hands and arms out of the door opening and make sure opening is
clear of obstructions.
Do not load transfer carriage, loading cars or rack and shelf assembly beyond specified limits.
Ensure transfer carriage is locked to chamber rails before pushing loading car into, or removing from,
chamber.
Removing panel below chamber door(s) presents a crushing hazard. When panel is removed, raise door to
its full up position and insert both tethered door pins. Be sure pins (2 per door) are removed before
activating doors. If doors must be free to travel while panel is removed, use extreme caution and station a
person to activate Emergency Stop, if needed. Failure to do so can result in trauma, dismemberment or
death.
WARNING
ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD
Disconnect facility power or place control disconnect switch, located on control box, to OFF before
removing or replacing any fuses or printed circuits boards from the sterilizer control.
WARNING
EXPLOSION HAZARD
This sterilizer is not designed to process flammable compounds. Do not use this sterilizer in the presence
of flammable compounds.

WARNING
SLIPPING HAZARD
To reduce slippery conditions, keep floors dry by immediately wiping up any spilled liquids or
condensation in sterilizer loading or unloading areas.
WARNING
STERILITY ASSURANCE HAZARD
Load sterility may be compromised if the Bowie-Dick test or air leak test indicates a potential problem. If
these indicators show a potential problem, refer the situation to a qualified service technician before
using the sterilizer further.
According to EN285 standards, a measured leak rate greater than 0.13 kPa/min (1.3 mbar/min) indicates
a problem with the sterilizer. Refer the situation to a qualified service technician before using the
sterilizer further.
WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY HAZARD
Before entering chamber for cleaning or servicing, turn main power switch OFF.
Area must be properly vented to prevent buildup of fumes. Wear eye protection and gloves when pouring
descaler into unit.
The sterilizer door weighs approximately 75 kg (167 lb). Always use care when removing the door. Two
individuals are required when removing the door.
CAUTION
POSSIBLE EQUIPMENT DAMAGE
Insufficient Service Clearance will make repairs more difficult and time consuming.
Piping sized too small may cause water hammer, resulting in damage to the sterilizer and facility.
If 0 dry time is selected, sterilizer automatically initiates a vapor removal phase in place of drying. This
phase can still draw a vacuum to 84 kPa (840 mbar). Consult manufacturer's recommendations to ensure
your equipment can withstand this depth of vacuum before selecting 0 dry time.
Never use a wire brush, abrasives or steel wool on door and chamber assembly. Do not use cleaners
containing chloride on stainless-steel surfaces. Chloride based cleaners will deteriorate stainless steel,
eventually leading to failure of the vessel.

Removing the door seal gasket with a tool, such as a screwdriver, is NOT recommended as, in most
cases, it will cut or damage the gasket so that it cannot be further used. Do not remove the gasket unless
absolutely necessary. Do not use a sharp tool to install the gasket.
Allow thermostatic traps to cool to room temperature before removing cover. Since there is nothing to
limit expansion, the diaphragm may rupture or fatigue if trap is opened while hot.
When disassembling or assembling steam pressure regulating valve, handle syphon and bellows
assembly gently to avoid damage.
Actuation of the safety valve at less than 75% of rated pressure can allow debris to contaminate the seat
and cause the safety valve to leak. A leaking safety valve must be replaced.
Whenever handling electronic components, use of a grounding wrist strap is mandatory to prevent static
discharge damage.
Gasket must be fully retracted prior to closing sterilizer door.
During Emergency Manual Operation, gasket must be fully retracted prior to operating sterilizer door.
Make sure door opening is clear of any obstruction before closing the door(s).
Do not attempt to open sterilizer door during manual operation unless chamber is at 0 kPa (0 mbar).

WARNING

Do not use control box shutoff switch to isolate power. The switch does not turn off single-phase power.

Do not open the power box. The power box contains no user-serviceable parts and presents an electric
shock hazard. Do not service the sterilizer unless all utilities have been properly locked out. Always follow

• Control Box Shutoff Switch – The switch, located on the front right of the control box, turns off power to the
system control. Three-phase and single-phase power to the rest of the sterilizer remains; see associated warning.
• Power Box – The power box is located on the upper left side of the sterilizer, at the front of the unit (operating
end), behind a hinged access panel. Refer to Figure 3-2. The power box includes electrical junctions and a 3-phase
circuit breaker which, if tripped or manually opened, disconnects power to the sterilizer control. The breaker is not
accessible to the operator, and is to be opened or closed only by qualified service technicians. The power box
contains no user-serviceable parts and is only to be opened by experienced technicians following proper lock-
out/tag-out procedures. See associated warning. If the breaker should trip on its own, call for service.
• MV1 - Water Supply Valve (Manual Valve) is located behind the front access panel, below the chamber. Refer to
Figure 3-2. Ensure the water supply valve is in the open position before operating the sterilizer.
• MV2 - Steam Supply Valve (Manual Valve) is located above the right side of the chamber (when facing the
operating end), behind the access panel. Refer to Figure 3-2. Ensure the steam supply valve is in the open position
before operating the sterilizer. Units equipped with an integrated steam generator will have a 3-way valve
installed. Ensure that this valve is open to the generator flow path.
• MV3 - Air Supply Valve (Manual Valve) is only used in emergency or maintenance situations. The valve is to remain
closed for normal sterilizer operation. The valve is located behind the front access panel, below the chamber.
Refer to Figure 3-2.
• Sterilizer Control (Located On Touch-Screen) –This control is visible on the touch-screen whenever the sterilizer is
in the In Standby mode.
3.2 Control Panel – Operating End
AMSCO 600 sterilizers are controlled, aside from manual valve and disconnects, from a touch screen located on a
control panel. Control buttons appear on the touch-screen as needed during each operation. Available controls change
as the sterilizer steps through different operations.
The control panel on the operating end (OE) of the sterilizer includes the components shown in Figure 3-3.
