This manual contains important information on proper use and maintenance
of the Converge Hydraulic Stretcher. Allpersonnelinvolvedintheuseand
maintenance of this equipment must carefully review and comply with
thewarnings,cautionsandinstructionscontainedinthismanual.These
instructions are important to protect the health and safety of personnel
operating a Converge Hydraulic Stretcher and should be retained in a
conveniently accessible area for quick reference.
Complete instructions for uncrating and connecting utilities, as well as
equipment drawings, have been furnished. If missing, contact STERIS for
replacement copies, giving the serial number and model numbers of the unit.
STERIS carries a complete line of accessories for use with this stretcher. A
STERIS representative will gladly review these with you.
The Hausted®Converge Hydraulic Stretcher is intended for use in patient
OB-GYN applications, as well as emergency treatment, transport or
recovery.
Indications for Use
A thorough preventive maintenance program is essential to safe and proper
unit operation. This manual contains maintenance schedules and proce-
dures which should be followed for satisfactory equipment performance.
You are encouraged to contact STERIS concerning our comprehensive
Annual Maintenance Agreements. Under the terms of these agreements,
preventive maintenance, adjustments, and replacement of worn parts are
done on a scheduled basis to assure equipment performance at peak
capability and to help avoid untimely or costly interruptions. STERIS main-
tains a global staff of well equipped, factory-trained technicians to provide
this service, as well as expert repair services. Please contact your STERIS
representative for details.
Service Information
A listing of the safety precautions to be observed when operating and
servicing this equipment can be found in Section 1 of this manual. Do not
operate or service the equipment until you have become familiar with this
information.
Any alteration of this equipment not authorized or performed by STERIS
Engineering Service which could affect its operation will void the warranty,
could adversely affect use, could violate national, state, and local regulations,
and could jeopardize your insurance coverage.

The following Safety Precautions must be observed when operating or servicing this Hausted® Converge Hydraulic
Stretcher. WARNING indicates the potential for personal injury and CAUTION indicates the potential for damage to
equipment. For emphasis, certain Safety Precautions are repeated throughout the manual. It is important toreview ALL
Safety Precautions before operating or servicing the unit.
Strictly following these Safety Precautions enhances your ability to safely and effectively utilize the unit and helpsthe
customer avoid improper maintenance methods which may damage the unit or render it unsafe. It is importantto
understand that these Safety Precautions are not exhaustive; customers are encouraged to develop their ownsafety
policies and procedures to enhance and compliment these Safety Precautions.
WARNING–LACERATION HAZARD:
When cutting bands always use a tool specifically designed for that purpose. This will help to avoid personal
injuries frequently incurred when bands are cut and tension released.
WARNINGS – PERSONAL INJURY HAZARD:
Do not sit on end – tipping may occur.
The fowler gas spring is only an assistant. The force that is required to lower and/or support the backrest may
vary, depending on the patient size and position.
Never stand on the footrest.
Maximum patient weight capacity is 227 Kilograms (500 pounds).
Do not transport patient in chair configuration (tipping may occur).
WARNING – PROPER OPERATION HAZARD:
Floors must be smooth and level to maintain optimum fifth wheel steering. Fifth wheel steering functions can be
influenced by floor irregularities (bumps or dips) greater than 1/2" (13 mm) across the span of the stretcher.

IMPORTANT: Report any shipping damage immediately! Inform shipper of
any damages – leave carton intact. Leave the Converge Hydraulic Stretcher
in the receiving area until inspection is complete.
Your Converge Hydraulic Stretcher has been carefully packaged at our
manufacturing plant to ensure safe shipment to you medical facility. There are
several procedures you must follow to put your new Converge Hydraulic
Stretcher into service. These procedures only take a few minutes to complete
and are required to ensure proper operation of the Converge Hydraulic
Stretcher.
Step 1 – Cut the two bands around the shipping carton.
Step 2 – Remove the top half of the carton and cut one side of the bottom half.
Step 3 – Remove the Horizon Stretcher from the carton. Cut the bands from
around the stretcher.
Step 4 – Check to see if all features of the stretcher work properly. If all features
work properly, go to step 5. If any of the features of the Horizon
Stretcher do not work properly, call STERIS for service.
Step 5 – Clean the Horizon Stretcher using a mild detergent to remove any dirt
accumulated during shipment.
Step 6 – Place the stretcher into service.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 Braking and
Steering Operation
3.1.1 Applying The Brakes The four wheel central braking system is activated by depressing the red
pedal at any of the four corners of the unit (Figure 3-1). To fully engage the
brakes, the pedal should be pressed to approximately 45º. All four caster
wheels should be locked from swiveling and rotating.
3.1.2 Releasing The
Brakes
Depress the green pedal at any of the four corners of the unit, until the pedal
is in a horizontal position (Figure 3-2). All four wheels should rotate and swivel
freely.
NOTE: Brakes should always be activated when unit is not in transport.

3.1.4 Releasing the
Steering Lock/Fifth Wheel
Depress the red pedal at any of the four corners of the unit, until the pedal is in
a horizontal position (Figure 3-2). All four wheels should rotate and swivel freely,
and/or the optional fifth wheel will lift off the floor.

From any corner of the stretcher, depress the green pedal downward into the
locked position. (Figure 3-3). Push the stretcher forward. Either one caster at the
foot end will lock into a non-swivel mode, or the optional fifth wheel will lower and
apply pressure to the floor. This allows straight steering by the attendant.

3.2 Litter Top Height
Adjustment
3.2.1 Height Adjustment Press the pump pedal to the floor (Figure 3-4), then release. Repeat this process
until desired height is obtained. Use smooth strokes on pump pedal to ensure
patient comfort.
3.2.2 Lowering Litter Top
Place the unit at maximum height, see Section 3.2.1 Height Adjustment . Press
down on the release pedal nearest the head end (Figure 3-6) until desired
position is obtained then remove pressure.

Place the unit at maximum height, see Section 3.2.1 Height Adjustment. Press
down on the release pedal nearest the foot end (Figure 3-7) until desired position
is obtained then remove pressure.

3.3 Fowler Backrest
Operation
3.3.1 Raising the Fowler
Backrest
Grasp the fowler frame tube on either corner of the fowler backrest frame tube
(Figure 3-8). With fingertips, grasp the fowler gas spring activating handle
(Figure 3-9). Slowly squeeze activating handle against the fowler frame tube.
With the gas spring activated, adjust the fowler backrest to needed position.
Once the required position is achieved, release the fowler activating handle,
then release the fowler frame tube.
NOTE:Dependingonthepatient’ssize,theforcerequiredtoadjustthebackrest
may vary.

3.3.2 Lowering the Fowler

Grasp the fowler frame tube on either corner of the fowler backrest frame tube
(Figure 3-10). With fingertips, grasp the fowler gas spring activating handle
(Figure 3-9). Slowly squeeze activating handle against the fowler frame tube.
NOTE: Beprepared to support the backrest if needed.
With the gas spring activated, adjust fowler backrest to needed position (Figure
3-10). Once the required position is achieved, release the fowler activating
handle, then release the fowler frame tube.

3.4 Retracto Rail
Operation
3.4.1 Raising Rail to Full
Height
Grasp the rail top cap at the center of the rail (Figure 3-11). Lift the rail all the way
up (Figure 3-12). When the rail locks in the full upright position, you will hear a
clicking sound. Check the rail lock by trying to return the rail to the previous
position.
NOTE: Be sure rail is locked securely before leaving patient.
3.4.3 Lowering the Rail Grasp the rail top cap at the center of the rail (Figure 3-12). With free hand, lift
upward on the rail lock plate (Figure 3-13). Keep the lock plate lifted while
lowering the rail until the half height lock is passed (Figure 3-14). Release lock
plate and lower rail completely (Figure 3-11).
NOTE: Neverleavethe patient unattended withtheraildown.

3.4.2 Raising Rail to Half
Height
Grasp the rail top cap at the center of the rail (Figure 3-11). Slowly lift the rail
approximately half way up (Figure 3-14). Stop lifting when you hear the rail lock
click as it engages. Lower the rail slightly. Check the rail lock by trying to return
the rail to the down position.
NOTE: Be sure rail is locked securely before leaving patient.

3.5 Foot Section

3.5.1 Lowering the Foot

Grasp the top frame tube and squeeze the foot section lock handle (Figure 3-
15). Grasp the foot section lift handle and squeeze the activating handle with
fingers (Figure 3-15). Push down on the foot section. Release the foot lock
handle as soon as the foot section clears the foot locks (approximately 5 inches)
(Figure 3-16). Adjust the foot section to the desired position (Figure 3-17), then
release the foot section activating handle.
3.5.2 Returning to
Stretcher Mode
Grasp the foot section lift handle and squeeze the activating handle with fingers
(Figure 3-18). Lift the foot section all the way up, forcing it past the foot section
locks (Figure 3-19).

3.6 Adjustable
Footrest
3.6.1 Repositioning the
Footrest
WARNING– PERSONAL IN-

onthefootrest.
The footrest has three positions; retracted, lower and the upper positions. With
the pan in the retracted position pull out on the handles on either side of the pan
(Figure 3-20). The footrest will drop into the lower position (Figure 3-21). To place
the footrest into the upper position, grasp the handles on both sides of the pan.
Tilt the pan up while lifting (Figure 3-22). Once the pan is up all the way, tilt the
pan out until it locks into position (Figure 3-23). To return the footrest into the
retracted position, tilt the pan up while letting it slide down, if needed (Figure
3-22), into the lower position (Figure 3-20). Continue tilting the footrest until it is
in the retracted position.
3.6.2 Leg Holder
Operation (Optional
Accessory)
Insert the accessory adapter into the accessory adapter well located under the
litter top. Then tighten the well knob (Figure 3-24). Insert the leg holder rod into
the accessory adapter (Figure 3-25). Adjust the height and the rotation required
on the leg holder rod. Rotate the ball knob that is located on the accessory
adapter, clock (Figure 3-26) locking the leg holder into position. Loosen the T-
handle directly under leg holder (Figure 3-27). Adjust the leg holder to desired
position and tighten the T-handle (Figure 3-28). To remove the leg holder simply
reverse the order of the above instructions.

3.7 Foot Extension
Operation
(Optional Accessory)
3.7.1 Extending Foot
Extension
With left hand, reach under the foot section and support the foot extension
(Figure 3-29). With right hand, turn the T-knob counterclockwise (Figure 3-28).
Pull out on the extension and pivot it to the up position (Figure 3-30). Tighten the
knob by turning it clockwise (Figure 3-31). Check to insure extension is locked
in place by pressing down on it slightly.
3.7.2 Retracting Foot
Extension
With left hand, grasp the foot extension (Figure 3-31). Turn the T-knob
counterclockwise (Figure 3-31). Rotate the foot extension under the foot
section (Figure 3-32). Push the extension all the way up against the foot
section and tighten the T-knob (Figure 3-29).
NOTE: Be sure the foot extension is all the way retracted before lowering foot
section.

3.8 Heel Stirrup
Operation
3.8.1 Extending the Heel
Stirrup
Remove pad from in front of the heel stirrup (Figure 3-33). Grasp the heel stirrup
assembly from under the liter top and pull out (Figure 3-34). After the heel stirrup
has been extended out to the desired length, tighten T-knob on the slide tube
under the side of the unit(Figure 3-36). Grasp heel stirrup and lift up (Figure 3-
37). the heel stirrup can be moved side to side for adjustment (Figure 3-38).
Loosen T-knob on top of the stirrup tube and adjust radial location of stirrup
(Figure 3-39) then re-tighten T-knob.
NOTE:Ifextendedlengthisneeded,thepinintheheelstirruptubecanbemoved
togainfourinchesofextraextension(Figure3-35).Thepinmustbereplacedin
one of the holes before using the heel stirrup.
3.8.2 Retracting the Heel
Stirrup
Simply reverse the above steps with the exception of the radial adjustment
(Figure 3-39). the stirrup must be adjusted into a straight axis with the stirrup
tube (Figure 3-38).
NOTE: Do not raise the foot section with the heel stirrups extended.

be done afterwards.
