or stamped on the chassis. The first number or letter
designates the country of manufacture. The last five digits

The Tektronix 7623AlR7623A Storage Oscilloscope is asolid-stateinstrumentdesigned for fast writing rate storage
applications. The 7623A operates inthreedisplay modes-NON STORE, STORE, and SAVE, and has four storage modes-
BISTABLE, VAR PERSIST, FAST BISTABLE, and FAST VAR PERSIST. This instrumenthas three plug-incompartments

OPERATING INFORMATION
PRELIMINARY OPERATION
To effectively use the 7623AlR7623A Storage Oscilloscope,the operationand capabilitiesof the instru-
ment must be known. This sectionprovides preliminary operating information, describes operationofcon-
trols and connectors, and providesan operating checkout procedure.
AC POWER SOURCES
This instrument is intendedto be operated from a single-phase, earth-referencedpowersource having
one current-carryingconductor (the NeutralConductor) near earth potential. Operationfrom power sources
where both current-carryingconductors are live with respect toearth (such
as phase-to-phaseon athree-wire
system)
is notrecommendedsince only the Line Conductor has over-current (fuse)protectionwithin the
instrument.
AC POWER CORD
This instrumenthas a three-wirepower cord with athree-terminalpolarized plug for connectionto
the power source and safety-earth. The safety-earthterminal of the plug
is directly connected tothe in-
strumentframe. For electric-shockprotection, insertthis plugonly inamatingoutlet with
a safety-earth
cqntactor otherwiseconnectthe frame to asafety earth system. The color-codingof the cord conductors
is in accordance with recognizedstandardsas shown inTable 1-1.

OPERATING VOLTAGE
The 7623AIR7623Acan be operated from either a 110-voltor a220-volt nominal line-voltagesource.
Inaddition, three operatingranges can be selectedwithin each nominal line voltage source. Use the follow-
ing procedure to obtain correct instrumentoperationfrom the line voltage available:

To convert from 110-voltsto 220-volts nominal line voltage, or vice versa, remove the voltage-
selector jumper and replace it with the spare jumper stored on the pins adjacent tothe voltage selector
.
area (see Figure 1-1). The jumpers are color codedto indicatethe nominalvoltage for which they are in-
tended; brown for 110-voltnominaloperationand red for 220-voltnominaloperation. Change the fuse to
provide protection for the selected nominal line voltage. Use the fuse located inthe Alt Fuse holder on the
Rectifier board (see Figure1-1for fuse location and Table 1-2for fuse type). Also, change the line-cord
plugto match the power-sourcereceptacle or use asuitableadapter.

5. To convert the instrumentfrom one regulatingrangeto another, remove the voltage selector
jumper and re-install
it onthe set of pins correspondingtothe desired regulatingrange. The proper reg-
ulating ran& will center about the average line voltage towhich the instrument
is to be connected (see
Table 1-21.

OPERATING TEMPERATURE
The 7623A can be operated where the ambient air temperature is between OOC and +50°c. This in-
strument can be stored in ambient temperatures between -55'~ and +75O~.After storage
at temperatures
,beyond the operatinglimits, allow the chassis temperatureto come within the operating limits before power
is applied.

The 7623A
is cooled by air drawn in through the top, side, and bottom panels and exhausted through
the rear panel. Componentsthat require most coolingare mountedexternally on
a heat radiator. Adequate
clearance must be provided on all sides to allow heat to be dissipatedfrom the instrument. Do not block or
restrict the air flow through the holes inthe cabinetor the heat radiator. Maintainthe clearance provided
by the feet onthe bottom and allow about two inches clearanceon the top, sides, and rear (more if possible).
The R7623A
is cooled by air drawn inthrough the air filter on the rear panel and exhausted through
portson the right side of the instrument. Adequate clearance must be provided at these locations. Allow
at least one and one-half inches clearance behind the air filter and at least one inchon the right side.
Regulating Range'
A thermal cutout interrupts power to the instrument if the internaltemperatureexceeds asafe oper-
ating level. Power
is automatically restored when the temperaturereturnsto asafe level. Operationin
confinedareas or close to
a heat source may cause the thermal cutout to open.

PLUG-INUNITS
The 7623A will accept up to three 7-series plug-inunits. This plug-infeature permits a variety of
display combinationsand also allows selectionof bandwidth, sensitivity, display mode, etc. to meet many
measurementrequirements. Inaddition,
it allowsexpansionof the oscilloscope systemto meet future
measurementrequirements. The overall capabilities of the resultant system are in large part determined
by the characteristicsof the plug-inselected. For complete informationon plug-insavailablefor use with
this instrument,see the current Tektronix, Inc., catalog.
PLUG-ININSTALLATION AND REMOVAL
To installaplug-inunit intoone of the plug-incompartments,align the slots inthe topand bottom
of the plug-inwith the associated guide rails inthe plug-incompartment. Push the plug-inunit firmly into
the plug-incompartmentuntil
it locksinto place. To remove aplug-in, pull the release latchon the plug-in
unitto disengage
it and pullthe unit out of the plug-incompartment. Plug-inunits can be removedor in-
stalled without turningoff the instrument power.
It is not necessary that all of the plug-incompartmentsbe filled tooperate the instrument;the only
plug-inunits needed are those requiredfor the measurementto be made. However, at environmental ex-
tremes, excess radiation may be radiatedintoor out of this instrumentthrough the open plug-incompart-
ments. Blank plug-inpanels are available from Tektronix, Inc., tocover the unusedcompartment; order
Part No. 016-0155-00.
When the 7623A is calibrated in accordancewith the calibration proceduregiven inSection 5,
the vertical and horizontal gains are standardized. This allowscalibrated plug-inunits to be changed from
one plug-incompartmentto another without recalibration. However, the basic calibration of the individual
plug-inunits should be checked when they are installed in this system toverify their measurement accuracy.
See the plug-inunit instruction manual for verification procedure.
Special purpose plug-inunits may have specific restrictionsregardingthe plug-incompartments in
which they can be installed. This information will be given inthe instruction manual for these plug-inunits.

MANual: When pressed, initiates an erase cycle to erase the storeddisplay and

PERIODIC: Controls the time betweenautomaticerase cycles. Ifthe erase period
ends during
a sweep, the erasure is delayed till the end of that sweep.

@ PERSISTENCE-Controls theview time of the VAR PERSIST and FAST VAR PERSIST

thefast transfer storage modes of either FAST VAR PERSIST or FAST BISTABLE.
@ VAR PERSIST-Selects the Variable Persistencestoragemode. The storeddisplay is of variable
intensitydependent uponthe setting of the STORAGE LEVEL, density of charge deposited
when storing, etc. The storeddisplay can be erased
at a controllable, continuous rate determined
by the setting of the PERSISTENCEcontrol. When not being erased, the view time
is limited by
the natural brightfading of the storage target.
@ BISTABLE-Selects the BISTABLEstorage mode. The stored display is substantiallyof two
fixed intensity levels; written (bright)and unwritten (background). An erase cyclereturnsthe
display to the unwritten state.
@ POWER-Switch and indicator. Switch appliespower to the instrumentand the indicator illumi-
nates to indicatethe power

@ CALIBRATOR-Positive going square wave or dc voltage selected by an internaljumper. Output
