Thismanualcoverstheoperationandmaintenanceof allinstrumentsintheWaveRunner8000HDand
MDA8000HDseries. TheMDAisbuilt onthe8-channelWaveRunner8000HDplatform andsharesall
operationalspecificationsandfunctionalitywith theWaveRunner.Theonlydifferenceistheadditionof
theMotorDriveAnalysissoftware,whichisonlyavailableonMDAs.Therefore,anywheretheterm

Cooling
Thereliesonforced air coolingwith internalfansandvents. Take care to avoidrestrictingthe airflow to
anypart.Inabenchtopconfiguration,leaveaminimum of 15cm (6inches)aroundthesidesbetweenthe
instrument andthenearest object.Thefeet provideadequatebottom clearance.Follow rackmount
instructionsfor proper rack spacing.
Caution:Do not blockthecoolingvents.
Theinstrument alsohasinternalfancontrolcircuitrythat regulatesthefanspeed basedontheambient
temperature.Thisisperformed automaticallyafter start-up.
Cleaning
Clean only theexterior of the instrumentusinga soft cloth moistenedwith water or anisopropyl alcohol
solution.Do not useharsh chemicalsor abrasive elements.Under no circumstancessubmerge the
instrument or allow moisture to penetrate it. Drythoroughlybefore connectinga live voltagesource.
Caution:Unplugthepowercordbeforecleaning.Do not attempt toclean internalparts.

Front Panel Front panelcontrolsduplicatefunctionalityavailablethroughthetouch

Knobsonthefront panelfunctiononewayif turnedandanotherif pushed
likeabutton.Thefirst labeldescribestheknob’s“turn”action,thesecond
labelits“push”action.Actionsperformedfrom thefront panelalwaysapply
totheactivetrace.
Manybuttonslight toshow theactive tracesandfunctions.
MiscellaneousControls
AutoSetupperformsanAutoSetup.Afterthefirst press,you willbe
promptedfor a confirmation.Pressthe buttonagain or use the touch
screento confirm.
Default Setupsetsallvolatile setupstothefactorydefault settings. After
thefirst press,you willbe prompted for a confirmation.Pressthe button
again or use thetouch screento confirm. SeeRestoreDefault Setup.
ClearSweepsresetstheacquisition counterandrestartsanyaveraging,
cumulativemeasurementsandhistograms.
TouchScreentoggleson/off touchscreenfunctionality.
Save/Userbuttoncanbe configuredasyou choose,for example:to save a
screen capture using your current ScreenImagePreferences;to savea
LabNotebook or other typeof file.See Configuring the User Buttonfor
instructionsonmakingtheselection.
TriggerControls
Thefront panelLevelknobchangesthetriggerthresholdlevel(V). The
numberisshownontheTrigger descriptor box. Pushing theknobsetsthe
triggerleveltothe50%point of theinput signal.
TheREADYindicatorislit whenthetriggerisarmed.TRIG'Dislit
momentarilywhenatrigger occurs.
SetupopenstheTriggerSetupdialog.Pressit againto closethedialog.
Autosets Auto trigger mode,which triggersthe oscilloscope after a set
time,evenif thetriggerconditionsarenot met.
NormalsetsNormaltrigger mode,whichtriggerstheoscilloscopeeachtimeasignalispresent that meets
thetriggerconditions.
Single setsSingletriggermode.Thefirst pressarmstheoscilloscopeto trigger.Thesecondpresstriggers
theoscilloscopeonce(single-shot acquisition)whentheinput signalmeetsthetriggerconditions.
Stoppreventsthescopefrom triggeringonasignal.If youstart theinstrument withthetriggerinStop
mode,a"Notraceavailable"messageisshown.Select atriggermodetomakeanacquisitionanddisplaya
trace.

HorizontalControls
TurntheDelayknobto changetheTrigger Delayvalue(S). Pushtheknobtoreset Delaytozero.
If thetracesource isaninput channel,turntheHorizontalAdjust knobto set theTime/division(S) of the
oscilloscopeacquisitionsystem.ThevalueisshownontheTimebasedescriptor box.When usingthis
control,the oscilloscopeallocatesmemory asneeded to maintainthe highest samplerate possiblefor the
timebase setting.If theactive trace isa math,zoom or memory,usethisknobto change the Horizontal
Scale,effectively"zooming"in or out. Thevalueisshown onthecorresponding descriptor box. Push the
knobtoadjust scaleinfineincrements;pushit againtoreturntosteppedincrements.
VerticalControls
TheOffset knobadjuststhe zero level of the trace (thismakesit appear to move up or down relative to the
centeraxisof thegrid).Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptorbox.Pushit toreset Offset tozero.
TheVerticalAdjust knobsets VerticalGain(V/div) for channeltracesor VerticalScalefor math,zoom and
memorytraces. Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptor box. Pushtheknobto toggle betweenfineand
steppedincrements.
TheChannelbuttons(1-8) turn ona channel that isoff,or activate achannelthat isalreadyon. Whenthe
channelisactive,pushingitschannelbuttonturnsit off.Alit buttonshowstheactive channel.
TheZoom (Z) buttoncreatesaQuickZoom of eachopentrace.Theresultingzoom tracesare1/10 of the
source channelscale andcenteredon the display. Use the Horizontal knobsto adjust this,or touch the
zoom descriptor boxtwicetodisplaythezoom dialog controls. TouchtheZoom buttonagaintoturnoff
thezooms.
TheDigital(D) buttonenablesdigitalinput on instrumentswithMixedSignalcapabilities.
Math,Zoom,andMemIndicators
TheseLEDslight toindicatewhenatype of trace otherthananinput channeliscurrentlyactiveand
controllableusingtheFront Panel.Touchatracedescriptor boxtomakeit activeandcontrollable.
CursorControls
Cursorsidentifyspecific voltageandtimevaluesonthewaveform.Thewhitecursormarkershelpmake
thesepointsmorevisible,aswellasprovideasimplewaytorepositionthem. Areadout of theVertical
valuesappearsonthetracedescriptorbox,while theHorizontalvaluesappearbelow theTimebase
descriptorbox.
Therearefivepreset cursortypes,eachwith auniqueappearanceonthedisplay.Thesearedescribedin
moredetailintheCursorssection.
PresstheCursorTypebuttonto applyor removecursors. Continuepressing to cyclethrough allcursor
typesuntilthedesiredtypeisfound ("Off"occurswhennocursorsarevisible).
TurntheCoarse knob toadjust theposition of absolutecursors(dashed-dottedlines).Pushit toreturnthe
cursorto thedefault 2.5divisionsetting. If you'reusingtheBothRelcursor type,eachpushwilltoggle
betweentheHorizontalandVerticalabsolute cursors.Withthecorrect cursor selected(highlighted),turn
theknob to adjust theposition.
TurntheFineknobtoadjust thepositionof relativecursors(dashedlines).Pushit to returnthecursor to
thedefault 7.5 division setting,or to select the other relative cursor when using the Both Relcursor type.

Whenanumeric valuefieldisselected,theseknobsserveastheAdjust knobs.TurntheCoarseknobto
make1-,2-,5-,10-stepped adjustments;turntheFine knob to makesingle-increment adjustments.Push
eitherknobto returntothedefault setting.
When awaveform trace isselected(bytouchingthe descriptor boxor the trace itself),these knobs
increase/decreasetraceintensity.
Signal Interfaces
Teledyne LeCroyinstrumentsoffer a variety of interfacesto input analogor digitalsignals. Seethe
oscilloscopeproduct pageat teledynelecroy.com for a list of compatibleinput devices.
ProBusInterface
ChannelinputsC1-C8 utilizetheProBusinterface.TheProBusinterfacecontainsa6-pinpower and
communicationconnection anda BNCsignalconnectionto theprobe,with sense ringsfor detecting
passiveprobes.It offersboth 50 Ωand1MΩinput impedance and providesprobepower andcontrolfor a
wide rangeof probessuchashighimpedancepassiveprobes,highimpedanceactive probes,current
probes,highvoltageprobes,anddifferentialprobes.
TheProBusinterfacecompletelyintegratestheprobewiththechannel.Uponconnecting aTeledyne
LeCroyprobe,theprobetypeisrecognizedandsomesetupinformation,suchasinput coupling and
attenuation,isperformedautomatically.ThisinformationisdisplayedontheProbeDialog,behindthe
Channel(Cn) dialog. System (probe plusinstrument) gain settingsareautomaticallycalculatedand
displayedbased ontheprobeattenuation.
TheProBusinterfacemayhaveaBNC-terminatedcable connecteddirectlyto it.DependingontheBNC
connector usedon the cable,theinterface isratedfor upto 4GHz with 50 Ωcouplingor 1 GHz with1MΩ
coupling.
Note:Operationalbandwidthisequal to themaximum input frequencyof your oscilloscopemodel.

OtherAnalogInputs
EXT Incanbeused toinput anexternaltrigger pulse.
REFIncanbeused to input anexternalreferenceclocksignal.
These inputshave asimpleBNCinterface with nopower supply. Seeyour product datasheet for voltage
andfrequencyratings.
MixedSignalInputs
Thedigitalleadset shippedwiththeMSOoptionconnectstotheMixedSignalInput on thefront of the
oscilloscopetoinput of up-to-16linesof digitaldata.Physicallinescanbepreconfiguredintodifferent
logicalgroups,Digitaln,correspondingtoa busandrenamedappropriatelydependingonthegroup.The
transitions for each linemaybeviewed throughdifferent displays.

Probes
Theoscilloscopeiscompatiblewiththeincludedpassiveprobesandmost TeledyneLeCroyactiveprobes
that areratedfor the instrument’sbandwidth. Probespecificationsand documentationare availableat
teledynelecroy.com/probes.
PassiveProbes
Thepassiveprobessuppliedarematchedtotheinput impedanceof theinstrument but mayneedfurther
compensation.Follow thedirectionsin theprobeinstructionmanualtocompensatethefrequency
responseof theprobes.
If usingotherpassiveprobesthanthose supplied,besuretoperform alow frequencycalibrationbefore
usingthem tomeasuresignal.Youcanusethesignalfrom theCalOut hookonthefront of the
oscilloscope.
ActiveProbes
Teledyne LeCroyoffersa variety of active probesfor use with your oscilloscope.Most active probes
matchprobeto oscilloscoperesponseautomaticallyusingproberesponsedatastoredinanon-board
EEPROM.Thisensuresthebest possiblecombinedprobeplusoscilloscopechannelfrequencyresponse
without theneedto perform anyde-embeddingprocedure.
Beawarethat manyactive probesrequireaminimum oscilloscopefirmwareversiontobefully
operational.Seetheprobedocumentation.

Powering On/Off
PressthePowerbuttontoturnontheinstrument. TheX-Stream application loadsautomatically
whenyouusethePower button.
Thesafest waytopowerdowntheoscilloscopeistousetheFile>Shutdownmenuoption,whichwill
alwaysexecuteapropershut downprocessandpreservesettings.QuicklypressingthePowerbutton
shouldalsoexecuteapropershut down,but holdingthePower buttonwillexecutea“hard”shut down (as
onacomputer),whichwedonot recommenddoing becauseit doesnot allow theoperatingsystem to
closeproperly,andsetupdatamaybelost.Neverpower off bypullingthepowercordfrom thesocket,or
bypowering off a connectedpower strip or battery without first shuttingdown properly.
ThePowerbuttondoesnot disconnect theinstrument from theACpowersupply.Theonlywayto fully
powerdowntheinstrument isto unplugtheACpowercord.
Werecommendunplugging theinstrument if it willremainunusedfor along periodof time.
Caution:Do not changetheinstrument’sWindows®PowerOptionssettingfrom thedefault Never
toSystem Standbyor System Hibernate.Doingsocancausethesystem tofail.
Caution:Do not power on or calibrate with asignalattached.
Connecting to Other Devices/Systems
Usethemenuoptionslistedbelow toconfigureconnectionsto otherdevices.
LAN
Theinstrument ispreset to accept a DHCPnetworkaddress over a TCP/IPconnection. Connect a cable
from anEthernet port onthebacksidepaneltoanetworkaccessdevice.GotoUtilities>UtilitiesSetup>
RemotetofindtheIPaddress.
Toassignastatic IPaddress,chooseNet Connectionsfrom theRemotedialog.Usethestandard
Windowsnetworkingdialogstoconfigurethedeviceaddress.
ChooseFile>FileSharingandopentheEmail&Report Settingsdialogtoconfigureemailsettings.
Audio/USBPeripherals
Connect the device to theappropriateport onthe front or sideback of the instrument. These connections
are"plug-and-play"anddonot requireanyadditionalconfiguration.
Printer
MAUIoscilloscopessupport USBprinterscompatiblewiththeinstrument'sWindowsOS.GotoFile>Print
Setuptoconfigureprintersettings. Select Propertiestoopen theWindowsPrint dialog.

External Monitor
Youmayoperate the instrument usingthe built-intouch screenor attach anexternalmonitor for extended
desktop operation. See your product datasheet for thesupportedmonitor resolution.
Connect themonitor cabletoavideooutput ontheinstrument.Youcanuseanadaptor if themonitor
cablehasadifferent interface.GotoDisplay>DisplaySetup>OpenMonitorControlPaneltoconfigure
thedisplay.Besuretoselect theinstrument astheprimarymonitor.
TousetheExtendGridsfeature,configurethesecondmonitortoextend,not duplicate,theoscilloscope
display. If theexternalmonitor istouchscreenenabled,the MAUI user interface can be controlledthrough
touchontheexternalmonitor.
Remote Control
Goto Utilities>UtilitiesSetup>Remotetoconfigureremote control.Connect theoscilloscopetothe
network/controller using the cabletype required byyour selection.
lVICP( TCP/IP) andVXI-11(LXI) over Ethernet aresupportedstandard,asisUSBTMC.
lGPIBissupportedwiththeuse of theoptionalUSB-GPIBadapter.
Note:If using TCP/IP,youcan connect over the LANor directlyto thecontroller. Be sure the
oscilloscopeisonthesamesubnet asthecontroller.Dependingonthehost,youmayneedtouse
a cross-over cable to makea direct connection.
Sample Clock
Toinput anexternalsampleclocksignal,connect aBNCcablefrom theEXT input totheotherdevice.Go
toTimebase>HorizontalSetup>ClockSourcetoconfiguretheclock.
Reference Clock
Toinput/output areferenceclocksignal,connect aBNCcablefrom theRef In/Out connectortotheother
instrument.GotoTimebase>HorizontalSetup>ClockSourcetoconfigure theclock.
Auxiliary Output
Tooutput signalfrom theinstrument toanotherdevice,connect aBNCcable from AuxOut totheother
device.GotoUtilities>UtilitiesSetup>AuxOutput toconfiguretheoutput.

Configuring the User Button
Thefront panel User buttoncanbe configuredto perform your choiceof actions,such assavinga screen
imageor other file type.
1. GotoUtilities>Front PanelSetup,thentouchSelect UserActionandmake your User button
selection.
2. Optionally,touchConfigureActiontomakeanyothersettingrelatedtothat action,suchasScreen
Image or Print preferences.
Oscilloscope Application
Waveform rendering andmeasurement functionsareperformedbytheXStreamDSOoscilloscope
software,whichrunsontheMicrosoft Windows10 platform.MAUI,the Most Advanced User Interface,
formsthe front-end of XStreamDSO,providinga single interface for all standard andoptional oscilloscope
applications.
Theoscilloscopesoftware(firmwareandstandardapplications)isactive upondelivery.At power-up,the
instrument loadsthesoftwareautomatically.
Freeupdatesareavailableperiodicallyfrom theTeledyneLeCroywebsiteat:

Registereduserscanreceive an emailnotificationwhenanew update isreleased.Follow theinstructions

Volatile vs. Non-Volatile Settings
Most of theoscilloscopesettingsarevolatile,meaning theywillautomaticallyrevert tothefactorydefault
whenever theoscilloscopeisrebooted,or when you choose to recall thedefault setup using the front
panel Default Setup buttonor theRecall dialog.
Thosesettingsthat aretheexceptiontothisrulearecallednon-volatile.Thesesettingswillberetained
session to sessionuntilyoumanuallychangethem. Non-volatilesettingsinclude:
