
Oscilloscope Overview and Set Up
SinglestartsSingletriggermode(single-shot acquisition).Thefirst pressarmstheoscilloscopeto trigger.
Thesecondpresstriggerstheoscilloscopeoncewhenthetriggeringsignalmeetsthetriggerconditions.
Stoppreventsthescopefrom triggering onasignal. If youboot uptheinstrument withthetrigger inStop
mode,a"Notraceavailable"messageisshown.Select anothermodetobeginacquisition.
HorizontalControls
TurntheDelayknobtoraise/lower theTriggerDelayvalue(S).Pushtheknobtoreset Delaytozero.
If thetracesourceisaninput channel,turntheHorizontalAdjust knobto set theTime/division(S) of the
oscilloscopeacquisitionsystem.ThevalueisshownontheTimebasedescriptor box. Whenusingthis
control,the oscilloscope allocatesmemoryasneededto maintainthe highest samplerate possible for the
timebasesetting.If theactive trace isa math,zoom or memory,use thisknobto change the Horizontal
Scale,effectively"zooming"in or out. Thevalue isshown onthe correspondingdescriptor box.
Pushtheknobto adjust scaleinfineincrements;pushit againtoreturntosteppedincrements.
VerticalControls
TheOffset knobadjusts the zero level of the trace(thismakesit appear to moveup or down relative to the
centeraxisof thegrid).Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptor box.Pushit toreset Offset tozero.
TheVerticalAdjust knobsets Volts/div for channel tracesor VerticalScalefor math,zoom andmemory
traces.Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptor box.Pushtheknob totoggle betweenfineandstepped
increments.
TheChannelbuttons(1-4) turn on a channelthat isoff,or activate achannelthat isalready on. When the
channelisactive,pushingitschannelbuttonturnsit off.Alit buttonshowstheactivechannel.
TheZoom (Z) buttoncreatesaQuickZoom of eachopentrace.Theresultingzoom tracesare1/10 of the
source channelscaleand centeredonthedisplay. Usethe Horizontalknobstoadjust this,or touch the
zoom descriptor boxtwicetodisplaythezoom dialogcontrols. TouchtheZoom buttonagain toturnoff
thezooms.
TheDigital(D) buttonenablesdigitalinput onoscilloscopeswiththeMSOoption.
CursorControls
Cursorsidentifyspecific verticalandhorizontalvaluesonthewaveform. Thewhitecursor markershelp
makethese pointsmorevisible,aswellasprovideasimplewaytorepositionthem.Areadout of the
verticalvaluesappearsonthetracedescriptorbox,while thehorizontalvaluesappear below the
Timebasedescriptor box.
Therearefive preset cursortypes,eachwitha uniqueappearanceonthedisplay.Thesearedescribedin
more detailintheCursorssection.
PresstheCursorType buttonto applyor removecursors. Continue pressing to cyclethroughallcursor
typesuntilthedesiredtypeisfound("Off"occurswhennocursorsarevisible).
TurntheCoarse knobto adjust thepositionof absolutecursors(dashed-dottedlines).Pushit toreturnthe
cursortothedefault 2.5divisionsetting.If you'reusingtheBoth Relcursortype,eachpushwillselect the
otherabsolutecursor.With thecorrect cursor selected(highlighted),turntheknobtoadjust theposition.
