Cooling
Theinstrument relieson forced air cooling with internalfansandvents. Take careto avoid restrictingthe
airflow toanypart. Inabenchtopconfiguration,leavea minimum of 15cm (6inches) aroundthesides
betweentheinstrument andthenearest object.Thefeet provideadequatebottom clearance.Follow
rackmount instructionsfor proper rackspacing.
Caution:Donot blockthecoolingvents.
Theinstrument alsohasinternalfancontrolcircuitrythat regulatesthefanspeedbasedontheambient
temperature. This isperformedautomatically after start-up.
Cleaning
Clean onlythe exterior of the instrumentusing asoft cloth moistened with water or anisopropylalcohol
solution. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive elements. Under nocircumstancessubmergethe
instrument or allow moisture to penetrate it. Dry thoroughlybeforeconnectinga live voltagesource.
Caution:Unplugthepowercordbeforecleaning.Donot attempt tocleaninternalparts.

Front Panel Front panelcontrolsduplicatefunctionalityavailablethroughthe
touchscreenandaredescribedhereonlybriefly.
Knobsonthefront panelfunctiononewayif turnedandanotherif
pushedlikea button.Thefirst labeldescribestheknob’s“turn”
action,thesecondlabelits“push”action.Actionsperformedfrom
thefront panelalwaysapplytotheactivetrace.
Manyfront panelbuttonslight toindicatewhichfunctionsand
tracesare active.Thelabels for Trigger,Horizontal,Verticaland
Cursors/Adjust willlight inthe color of thetrace that iscurrently
associatedwith theseknobs.TheMath,Zoom,andMem
indicatorsbetweentheHorizontalandVerticalknobswilllight
when theyare controlling a math function,zoom,or memory
trace(insteadof achannel).
MiscellaneousControls
AutoSetupperformsanAutoSetup.Afterthefirst press,youwill
bepromptedfor aconfirmation. Press the button again or usethe
touchscreento confirm.
Default Setupresetstheoscilloscopetothefactorydefault
configuration. After the first press,you willbe promptedfor a
confirmation.Pressthebutton again or usethe touch screen to
confirm.
TouchScreentoggleson/off touchscreenfunctionality.
Save/Usercan beconfiguredas you choose,for example:savea
screen capture using your current Screen ImagePreferences;
save other file types;or clear sweepsandrestart measurement
counters.SeeConfiguringthe Save/ User Button for instructions
onmakingtheselection.
TriggerControls
Thefront panelLevelknobchangesthe trigger thresholdlevel(Vor A). Thenumber is shown onthe
Triggerdescriptor box. Pushingtheknobsetsthetriggerlevelto the50%amplitudeof theinput signal.
TheREADYindicatorlightswhenthetrigger isarmed.TheTRIG'Dindicator lightswhenatriggeroccurs.
SetupopenstheTriggerSetupdialog.Pressit againtoclosethedialog.
AutostartsAuto trigger mode,whichtriggersthe oscilloscope after a set time,evenif the trigger
conditionsarenot met.
NormalstartsNormaltriggermode,whichtriggerstheoscilloscopeeachtimethesignalonthetriggering
channelmeetsthetriggerconditions.

SinglestartsSingletriggermode(single-shot acquisition).Thefirst pressarmstheoscilloscopeto trigger.
Thesecondpresstriggerstheoscilloscopeoncewhenthetriggeringsignalmeetsthetriggerconditions.
Stoppreventsthescopefrom triggering onasignal. If youboot uptheinstrument withthetrigger inStop
mode,a"Notraceavailable"messageisshown.Select anothermodetobeginacquisition.
HorizontalControls
TurntheDelayknobtoraise/lower theTriggerDelayvalue(S).Pushtheknobtoreset Delaytozero.
If thetracesourceisaninput channel,turntheHorizontalAdjust knobto set theTime/division(S) of the
oscilloscopeacquisitionsystem.ThevalueisshownontheTimebasedescriptor box. Whenusingthis
control,the oscilloscope allocatesmemoryasneededto maintainthe highest samplerate possible for the
timebasesetting.If theactive trace isa math,zoom or memory,use thisknobto change the Horizontal
Scale,effectively"zooming"in or out. Thevalue isshown onthe correspondingdescriptor box.
Pushtheknobto adjust scaleinfineincrements;pushit againtoreturntosteppedincrements.
VerticalControls
TheOffset knobadjusts the zero level of the trace(thismakesit appear to moveup or down relative to the
centeraxisof thegrid).Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptor box.Pushit toreset Offset tozero.
TheVerticalAdjust knobsets Volts/div for channel tracesor VerticalScalefor math,zoom andmemory
traces.Thevalueappearsonthetracedescriptor box.Pushtheknob totoggle betweenfineandstepped
increments.
TheChannelbuttons(1-4) turn on a channelthat isoff,or activate achannelthat isalready on. When the
channelisactive,pushingitschannelbuttonturnsit off.Alit buttonshowstheactivechannel.
TheZoom (Z) buttoncreatesaQuickZoom of eachopentrace.Theresultingzoom tracesare1/10 of the
source channelscaleand centeredonthedisplay. Usethe Horizontalknobstoadjust this,or touch the
zoom descriptor boxtwicetodisplaythezoom dialogcontrols. TouchtheZoom buttonagain toturnoff
thezooms.
TheDigital(D) buttonenablesdigitalinput onoscilloscopeswiththeMSOoption.
CursorControls
Cursorsidentifyspecific verticalandhorizontalvaluesonthewaveform. Thewhitecursor markershelp
makethese pointsmorevisible,aswellasprovideasimplewaytorepositionthem.Areadout of the
verticalvaluesappearsonthetracedescriptorbox,while thehorizontalvaluesappear below the
Timebasedescriptor box.
Therearefive preset cursortypes,eachwitha uniqueappearanceonthedisplay.Thesearedescribedin
more detailintheCursorssection.
PresstheCursorType buttonto applyor removecursors. Continue pressing to cyclethroughallcursor
typesuntilthedesiredtypeisfound("Off"occurswhennocursorsarevisible).
TurntheCoarse knobto adjust thepositionof absolutecursors(dashed-dottedlines).Pushit toreturnthe
cursortothedefault 2.5divisionsetting.If you'reusingtheBoth Relcursortype,eachpushwillselect the
otherabsolutecursor.With thecorrect cursor selected(highlighted),turntheknobtoadjust theposition.

TurntheFineknobtoadjust thepositionof relativecursors(dashedlines). Push it toreturnthecursorto
thedefault 7.5 divisionsetting,or to select the other relative cursorwhenusing the Both Relcursor type.
WhenCursorsareoff anda dataentryfield isselected,theseknobsserveastheAdjust knobs.Turnthe
left knobtomakecoarse(1-,2-,5-,10-stepped) adjustments;turntheright knobtomakefine(single-
increment) adjustments.Pusheitherknobtoreturntothedefault setting.
Signal Interfaces
Teledyne LeCroyinstruments offer a variety of interfacesto input analog or digitalsignals. Seethe
oscilloscopeproduct pageat teledynelecroy.com for alist of compatibleinput devices.
ProBusInterface
ChannelinputsC1-C4utilizetheProBusinterface.TheProBusinterfacecontainsa6-pinpowerand
communicationconnectionanda BNCsignalconnection to the probe,with sense rings for detecting
passiveprobes.It offersboth50 Ωand1MΩinput impedance and providesprobepower andcontrolfor a
wide rangeof probessuchashighimpedancepassiveprobes,highimpedanceactiveprobes,current
probes,highvoltageprobes,anddifferentialprobes.
TheProBusinterfacecompletelyintegratestheprobewith thechannel.UponconnectingaTeledyne
LeCroyprobe,theprobetype isrecognizedandsomesetupinformation,suchasinput couplingand
attenuation,isperformedautomatically.ThisinformationisdisplayedontheProbeDialog,behindthe
Channel(Cn) dialog. System (probe plusinstrument) gain settings areautomatically calculatedand
displayedbasedontheprobeattenuation.
TheProBusinterfacemayhavea BNC-terminatedcableconnecteddirectlytoit.DependingontheBNC
connector used onthe cable,the interface isratedfor upto 4 GHzwith 50 Ωcoupling or 1 GHz with1MΩ
coupling.
Note:Operationalbandwidthisequalto themaximum input frequencyof your oscilloscope model.

OtherAnalogInputs
EXT Incanbeused toinput anexternaltriggerpulse.
Thisinput hasa simpleBNCinterface with no power supply.See your product datasheet for voltageand
frequencyratings.
MixedSignalInputs
Thedigitalleadset shippedwiththeMSOoptionconnectsto theMixedSignalInput onthefront of the
oscilloscopetoinput of up-to-16linesof digitaldata.Physicallinescanbepreconfiguredinto different
logicalgroups,Digitaln,correspondingtoabusandrenamedappropriatelydependingonthegroup.The
transitions for each linemaybeviewedthroughdifferent displays.

Probes
Theoscilloscopeiscompatiblewiththeincludedpassiveprobesandmost TeledyneLeCroyactiveprobes
that are rated for theinstrument’sbandwidth.Probespecificationsanddocumentationare available at
teledynelecroy.com/probes.
PassiveProbes
Thepassiveprobessuppliedarematchedtotheinput impedanceof theinstrument but mayneedfurther
compensation.Follow thedirectionsintheprobeinstructionmanualtocompensatethefrequency
responseof theprobes.
If usingotherpassiveprobesthanthose supplied,besuretoperform a low frequencycalibrationbefore
usingthem tomeasuresignal. Youcanusethesignalfrom theCalOut hookonthefront of the
oscilloscope.
ActiveProbes
Teledyne LeCroyoffersa variety of activeprobesfor use with your oscilloscope. Most active probes
matchprobetooscilloscoperesponseautomaticallyusingproberesponsedatastoredinanon-board
EEPROM.Thisensuresthebest possiblecombinedprobeplusoscilloscopechannelfrequencyresponse
without theneedto perform anyde-embeddingprocedure.
Beawarethat manyactiveprobesrequireaminimum oscilloscopefirmwareversiontobefully
operational.Seetheprobedocumentation.
Micro SD Card
TheMicroSDCardactsastheoscilloscope'sremovableharddrive.Useit tostoreandeasilysharesetup
files,waveform files,LabNotebooks,andother user data.
Toremove thecard,pushinandrelease.Thecardshouldpartiallypopout,at whichpoint it canbepulled
out fully.
Toreplacethecard,pushit intotheslot untilyou hearit click.
Note:WhenusingtheoscilloscopeDiskUtilities,theMicroSDcardislabeledStorageCard,whilea
connectedUSBdriveislabeledUSBDisk.

Powering On/Off
PressthePowerbuttontoturnontheinstrument.TheX-Stream applicationloadsautomatically
whenyouusethePowerbutton.
Thesafest wayto power downtheoscilloscopeistousetheFile>Shutdownmenuoption,whichwill
alwaysexecuteapropershut downprocessandpreservesettings.QuicklypressingthePowerbutton
shouldalsoexecutea proper shut down,but holdingthePowerbuttonwillexecutea“hard”shut down(as
onacomputer),whichwedonot recommenddoing becauseit doesnot allow theoperatingsystem to
closeproperly,andsetupdatamaybelost. Neverpoweroff bypullingthepowercordfrom thesocket,or
bypoweringoff a connected power strip or battery without first shuttingdownproperly.
ThePower buttondoesnot disconnect theinstrument from theACpowersupply.Theonlywaytofully
powerdowntheinstrument isto unplug theACpowercord.
Werecommendunpluggingtheinstrument if it willremainunusedfor alongperiodof time.
Caution:Do not power on or calibrate with asignalattached.
Software Activation
Theoscilloscopesoftware(firmwareandstandardapplications) isactiveupondelivery.At power-up,the
instrument loadsthesoftwareautomatically.
Freefirmwareupdatesareavailableperiodicallyfrom theTeledyneLeCroywebsiteat:
teledynelecroy.com/support/softwaredownload
Registereduserscanreceiveanemailnotificationwhenanew updateisreleased.Follow theinstructions
inFirmwareUpdatetodownloadandinstallthesoftware.
If youdecidetopurchaseanoption,youwillreceivealicensekeyviaemailthat activatestheoptional
features.SeeOptionsfor instructionson activating optional software packages.
Language Selection
Tochangethelanguageof theoscilloscopeapplication:
1. GotoUtilities>PreferenceSetup>Preferencesandmakea Languageselection.
2. Follow theprompt torestart theapplication.

Afterstart up,configuretheoscilloscopeconnectionsusingthemenuoptionslistedbelow.
LAN
Theoscilloscopeispreset to accept DHCPnetworkaddressingover a TCPIPconnection. Connect an
Ethernet cablefrom theport onthebackpaneltoanetworkaccessdevice.
GotoUtilities>UtilitiesSetup>RemotetofindtheIPAddress.
ToconfigureaStatic IPaddress:
1. TouchNet ConnectionsontheRemotedialog.
2. TouchtheMini-port icon(right) toopenthedriver settings.
3. Select SpecifyanIPaddressandenterthenew address.
ToconfigureEmail,goto File >File Sharing>EmailSettings.
Remote Control
Youcanremote controltheinstrument usingTCP/IPoverLAN. Besuretheinstrument isonthesame
subnet asthecontroller.
Note:Youcanalso use theLANport tomakea direct connection,but dependingonthecontroller,
youmayhave to usea cross-over cable.
TheWaveSurfer alsosupportsremote control viaUSBTMC or GPIB(with theoptionalUSB-GPIBadapter).
Tochangetheremotecontrolsettingfrom thedefault TCP/IP,gotoUtilities>UtilitiesSetup>Remote.
USBPeripherals
Connect peripherals(e.g.,mouse,keyboard)toanyUSBhost port on the front or backof the instrument.
Theseconnectionsare"plug-and-play"anddonot requirefurtherconfiguration.
External Monitor
WaveSurfer4000HDsupportsexternalmonitorswith1280x800 ppiresolution.Connect themonitorcable
totheHDMI videooutput onthebackof theinstrument.Theconnectionis“plug-and-play”anddoesnot
requireanyfurtherconfiguration.
Printer
WaveSurfer4000HDsupportsPictBridge-compliant printers.Connect theprinter toanyhost USBport. Go
toFile>Print Setuptoconfigureprinter settings.

Trigger Out
Tosend atriggerout pulsetoanotherdevice,connect aBNCcablefrom AuxOut onthebackof he
instrument totheotherdevice.
WaveSource Waveform Generator
Connect a BNCcablefrom theWaveSourceOutput onthebackof theinstrument tothesignalinput
device.GotoUtilities>WaveSourcetoconfigurethesignal.
Note:WaveSourceisoptionalandrequiresanactivatedlicensekey.
Configuring the Save/User Button
Thefront panelSave/User button canbeconfigured to perform your choice of actions,suchassavinga
screen imageor other filetype.
1. GotoUtilities>Front PanelSetup,thentouchSelect UserActionand make your User button
selection.
2. Optionally,touchConfigure Actiontomakeanyothersettingrelatedtothat action,suchasScreen
Imageor Print preferences.

MAUI(Most AdvancedUser Interface) isTeledyneLeCroy'suniqueoscilloscopeuser interface.
Touch Screen
Theoscilloscopefeaturesa capacitive touchscreenthat supportsfluid,tablet-likeresponseto gestures.
Note:Use your finger or acapacitive stylus (not included) to interact with the touch screen.A
regular styluswillnot work.
Theentiredisplayareaisactive.Manycontrolsthat displayinformationalso workas“buttons”toaccess
otherfunctions,andeventhewaveform tracescanbemanipulated.If you havea mouseinstalled,youcan
clickanywhereyoucantouchto activatea control;infact,youcanalternatebetweenclickingand
touching,whichever isconvenient for you.

Thetopof thewindow containsacompletemenuof functions.Makinga selectionherechangesthe

front panelor launched via the descriptor boxes,the menubar isthe best wayto accessdialogsfor
Save/Recall(File)functions,Displayfunctions,Status,LabNotebook,Pass/Failsetup,optionalAnalysis
packages,andUtilities/Preferencessetup.
TheClearSweepsbuttonto the right of the menubar clearsacquiredwaveformsfrom the history buffer
andresetsallmeasurement countersandhisticons.

Thegridsdisplaythewaveform traces. Everygridis8 verticaldivisionsrepresentingthefullnumberof

separategrids.Regardlessof thenumberandorientationof grids,everygridalwaysrepresentsthesame
numberof Verticallevels.Therefore,absoluteVerticalmeasurement precisionismaintained.
GridIntensity
Youcanadjust thebrightnessof thegridlinesbygoing toDisplay>DisplaySetupandenteringanew Grid
Intensitypercentage.Thehigher thenumber,thebrighter andbolder thegridlines.
GridIndicators
These indicators appear aroundor onthegridto markimportant points on the display. They arematched
to the color of thetrace to whichtheyapply. When multiple tracesappear on the same grid,indicators
refer to the foregroundtrace—theonethat appearsontopof theothers.
Axislabelsmarkthetime andunit representedbyagriddivision.Theyupdatedynamically
asyoupanthetrace or change the scale. Originallyshown inabsolute values,the labels
show deltafrom 0 (center) whenthenumberof significant digitsgrowstoolarge.To
removethem,gotoDisplay>DisplaySetupanddeselect AxisLabels.
TriggerTime,asmalltrianglealongthebottom (horizontal)edgeof thegrid,showsthe
timeof thetrigger.UnlessHorizontalDelayisset,thisindicatorisat thezero(center) point
of thegrid.Delaytime isshownat thetopright of theTimebasedescriptor box.
Pre/Post-triggerDelay,a smallarrow to the bottom left or right of the grid,indicatesthat a
pre-or post-trigger Delayhasshifted the Trigger Time indicator to atime not shown onthe
grid. AllDelayvaluesareshownontheTimebaseDescriptor Box.
TriggerLevelat theright edgeof thegridtracksthelast triggeredvoltagelevel.If you
change thelevel,ahollow triangleof thesame color appearsat thenewleveluntilit has
triggered.Thetrigger levelindicator isnot shownif thetriggeringchannelisnot displayed.
ZeroVoltsLevelislocatedat theleft edgeof thegrid.Oneappearsfor eachopentraceon
thegrid,sharingthe number and color of the trace.
Cursormarkersappear over thegridto indicate the voltage and time beingmeasuredon
thewaveform.Drag-and-dropcursormarkerstoquicklyrepositionthem.
