1. INTRODUCTION
Forewords
This manual describes the electrical part, PLC and MMI of the additional automation installed on the Haas
Mini Mill preparation machine. It is intended mainly for the service engineers but also for the end user
operators. It gives complementary information and particular handlings concerning the preparation machine.
Warning!
This manual is an additional document of the mechanical, electrical and electronical
suppliers own manuals. It does not replace the suppliers’ manuals. Only the specific
handlings and particularities of this machine are described here.

Brief Description
The preparation machine is composed by a Haas Mini Mill milling machine, a pneumatic vice, a positioning
axis, a measuring system and a robot access window.
The introduction of a sample can be done manually or automatically following the selected mode.
The pneumatic vice and the measuring system give a automatic positioning of the sample in the pneumatic
vice.
The milling cycle, the choice of the milling program and the selection of the milling tool of the Haas Mini
Mill are controlled by the AMP.
Electronic Control
The items added on the Haas Mini Mill are controlled by a Siemens S7-300 PLC and through a Siemens
TP177mobile panel. This document describes all the items and their interactions with the Haas Mini Mill.
PLC AMP Manage communication with the Haas Mini Mill.
Manage communication with the automatic system TMO.
Manage the digital I/O.
Interface between the display and the external world.
Mobile panel MMI Display the information of the PLC, allows the operator to control different functions
of the machine, to introduce data and to modify the settings, etc.

2. MACHINE OPERATION
The operation of the machine is made through a mobile panel (ARL SMS panel) and the panel of the Haas
machine (Haas panel).
Simatic Mobile Panel

Start Up
This section describes the main commands in order to start up the machine.
Start Up Procedure
♦The main power switch on the principal rack of the PM must be on.
♦Press on the POWER ON button of the Haas panel (#3 on the Haas panel above).
♦Remove all ES that could be on.
♦Wait that the ARL SMS mobile panel screen shows MILLING 1/2 : ROBOT
♦Press on the POWER ON function touch of the Simatic mobile panel to switch on the AMP (#6 or )
on figure 2.1).
♦Press on the RESET button as long as you have alarm message on the screen of the Haas panel (#9 on
the Haas panel above).
♦Do a cycle door (open/close) of the PM.
♦Press on the POWER UP - RESTART button to put the PM in origins position (#10 on the Haas panel
above).
♦Press on the MEM button to select the memory mode (#11 on the Haas panel above).

Stop Procedure
♦Press on the POWER OFF function touch of the Simatic mobile panel to switch off the AMP (#5 or (
on figure 2.1).
♦Press on the POWER OFF button of the Haas panel (#4 on the Haas panel above).
Powering Up the PM
♦Switch the Haas MAIN POWER switch ON.

♦Open the PrepControl cabinet and check that all circuit breakers are switched ON.
♦Press on the POWER ON button on the Haas panel (#3 on figure 2.2).
♦Press on the POWER ON function touch of the Simatic mobile panel to switch on the AMP (#6 or )
on figure 2.1).
♦On the Haas Control Panel, press on the RESET button (#9 on figure 2.2) until no error are displayed.
♦Open and close the Operator Door as instructed on the screen.
♦Press on POWER UP – RESTART (#10 on figure 2.2), this will initialize the XYZ axis.
♦On the Simatic mobile panel go in SYSTEM 2/4 : Users and log yourself in with the SERVICE
account.
♦If the machine wasn’t used for more than 4 days, you will need to launch the Spindel Warm-up program.
To do so follow this procedure:
♦Log in SERVICE mode
♦Go in MEM mode
♦You can start to work.
One general rule: do not switch on the power immediately after having switched it off

Power Supply of the AMP
The main power switch on the Haas electrical rack must be on.
The power cables of the AMP are plugged on the PM after the relays of the powering up As soon as the
POWER ON button is pressed on the Haas panel, the AMP is powered up.
At start up of the AMP, the electronic runs several checks and the PLC and the screen starts up.
If the mobile panel screen of the AMP does not switch on:
♦Check the main power supply of the PM (3x400V).
♦Check the main circuit breaker 2Q1.
♦Check the circuit breaker of the 24 VDC supply, 3Q3.
Press the buttons #4 (&) and #6 ()) on the Simatic mobile panel (see figure 2.1) to reset all the error on
the top of the screen. At the start up, the language is set in French. To change the language, press
SYSTEMEand the select the desired flag.
In the example below, the English language has been selected.

Emergency Stop Button
By pressing the ES on the Simatec mobile panel (#3 on figure 2.1) or on the Haas control panel (#5 on figure
2.2), you immediately switch off the power of the machine. To switch it back on, first release all the pressed
ES.
Press the RESET button on the Haas control panel (#9 on figure 2.1) as long as you have warnings or errors,
then press on POWER UP – RESTART (#10 on figure 2.2) to initialise all axes.
