1. Introduction
Detailed below is the installation procedure for the spectrometer. It is very important that
these procedures are followed, in correct order and taking account of the time delays
required. Failure to do so can result in extended installation and possible damage. The
procedures and delays are designed to prevent problems with purge, software, firmware and
hardware.
The installing engineer should read the optical problems on installation section of the
installation documentation.
The boxes at the end of each section should be initialled by the installing engineer to indicate
completion of the section, before proceeding to the next section.
Standard engineer tools, C-Term software (from Cetac Automation), a water flow meter
and an air flow meter are required.
It is essential that an overnight purge has occurred and has been checked before the manual
performance testing occurs.
Several instances for customer training and customer practice are essential.

2. Installation
2.1 Pre-Installation Requirements
Ensure that the requirements detailed in the Pre-Installation checklist are provided in the
location chosen by the user. Read each section of the site Pre-Installation guide to verify site, gas,
chiller, extraction and waste requirements are met or set during the installation process. Tick each box
in the check list as each requirement is met.

instrument)
Corrosion inhibitor/testing and set-up solutions – supplied with instrument.
(Also available in the Installation and Maintenance Kit)

2.2 Package Inspection
Check the contents of the shipment for
completeness and possible damage in
transit.
Confirm the damage indicators below are
correct.
If the contents are incomplete, or damaged,
a claim should be filed with the carrier
immediately. The local Thermo Fisher
Scientific organisation should be notified of
any damage and of any missing items, in
order to facilitate repair or replacement.
2.3 Packing List
The packing list consists of a number of items sent with the Spectrometer and accessories
necessary to made the system operational. In addition a number of consumable items are
included which may be used when commissioning the instrument. Check the packing list

supplied with the equipment.
2.4 Locate Instrument
Once the site requirements are confirmed as acceptable, prepare to install the
instrumentation.
2.4.1 Position iCAP
Lift spectrometer on to the bench (using 4 pe
ople to lift).
2.5 Connection of Power
2.5.1
Power Cable Connections
The spectrometer may have been supplied with a power cable with no plug fitted. Fit a suitable
3-pin plug to the free end of the cable, connecting individual leads as follows:

Earth/Ground (E) Green/yellow Green
WARNING: Ensure that, if the earth connection is not connected to the equipment
through the power outlet socket, a separate earth connection is made to the green and
yellow wire of the power input connector, capable of carrying 20 to 32A.
The power plug must be inserted into a single phase socket outlet provided with a protective
power earth contact.
2.6 Connection of Extraction
Connect the exhaust to the instrument using the 125mm internal diameter flexible hose.
Secure both ends of the tubing.
2.6.1 Turn fume extraction on
Set/check extraction flow :
♦4.5 to 5.5meters/second for a Radial system
♦8.5 to 10.5meters/second for a Duo system
Note: the Pre-Installation section of the iCAP Reference Guide provides details of how
to measure extraction.
2.7 Connection of Gasses
Before connecting the argon/nitrogen gases place a cloth over the iCAP end of the gas
tubing and vent the gases for at least 1 minute. Check the cloth for any contamination.
Do the same for the gas supply for the Additional Gas module on the 7600.
2.7.1 Connect Gas supply
Connect argon (and nitrogen if used) to the
instrument using the gas filters supplied as
shown in the picture. 6mm tubing is used
with push-fit connectors.
7600 only: Connect compressed air to the
instrument via the supplied gas filter (4mm
tubing is used with push-fit connectors).

Be sure to orientate the filter correctly
,
using the arrow marking the direction of gas
flow.
Make sure the customer is aware that they must check the gas filters periodically.
Set the argon pressure gauge to 80psi/ 5.5bar*, the nitrogen purge pressure to 45psi/ 3.0bar
to 80psi/5.5bar (if used) and the additional gas (7600 only) to 30psi/2.0 bar (if used).
*Important - Do Not Exceed 6.0 bar!
For best results purge gas should be left on all the time.
2.8 Spectrometer Power-up
2.8.1 Connect Main instrument
power supply
Connect the spectrometer power cable to a
suitable voltage supply.
Switch on the iCAP, using the switch on the
left hand side rear, and check that the
relevant LEDs on the right hand side of
iCAP are illuminated as shown below
LED 1 Starts flashing once the RF has
initialised (approximately 30 seconds)
LED 2 Off
LEDs 3-7 On
LED 8 Flashing
LED 9 Off (see section below)
2.9 Start Purge
2.9.1 Turn on the fast purge
For DUO instruments, ensure the radial
plasma view window is fitted at this
stage so a good purge can be achieved.
(Push button below LEDs on side of
instrument).
2.9.2 Check LED 9 lights up.

2.10 Connection of Coolant
2.10.1 Install water chiller
♦ Follow the instructions supplied with
the chiller.
♦ Connect up the water chiller to the
push-fit ports on right hand side of
instrument (taking care to connect
the output connection from the
chiller to the input connection on the
instrument, after removing the
shipment plugs).
♦ Make sure the supplied water filter
is fitted onto the input to the
instrument and does not leak (check
tightness of filter cover).
♦ Fill the water chiller with coolant
The coolant should be distilled, or
deionised water, with 2.5% v/v corrosion
inhibitor (842312052621).
(This volume equates to 190ml for a
ThermoFlex900 chiller with standard 3m
pipes).
The inhibitor is included with the instrument
and as part of the Installation and
Maintenance Kit.
(Full coolant information is included in the
Pre-Installation guide).
WARNING: do not use any
other cooling liquid mixture.
Note:
Do Not switch on the chiller until starting the performance tests
. This is
to avoid ice damage to the CID camera if water has not been removed from the
optical system.
Note: When disconnecting push fit connectors - first push in the sleeve as far as possible as
this will then release the tubing.
Reminder: Soak the spray chamber in a 10% laboratory cleaning solution (for
example Decon) for 30 minutes. This will save time later in the installation.
Remember to remove the o-rings.

3. Setting the Cetac Personality for all iCAP 7000 Series
Follow the unpacking and assembly
instructions for the autosampler.
Connect the serial cable between the PC
and the autosampler and the power supply
to the autosampler:
NOTE:
It’s imperative that the Cetac Autosampler firmware Personality is configured for the
iCAP. In the event that communication does not occur, or is not working correctly, check and
change the personality for the correct instrument.
Verifying Connection to
Autosampler from PC
:
Once connected to the autosampler (using the C-Term application – available as a download
from cetac.com) type the command “ver”.
A response that details the version string information should be displayed. If the autosampler
does not respond with a version string, verify the connection settings. The string should be
similar to the following:

Checking the Personality
To check the personality type, in the C-Term window, the command “gettype”.
A string similar to the following indicates the correct personality:
gettype[0D]
CETAC Std 520[0D]
Changing Personalities
To change the personality we will type in to the C-Term window the command “settype=0”.
You should see a string similar to the following;
settype=0[0D]
OK:[0D]
Verifying Personality Change
Power off and on the autosampler.
Verify the personality to make sure the change has been accepted by the autosampler.
To check type the command “gettype”. A string similar to the following indicates the correct
personality:
gettype[0D]
CETAC Std 520[0D]
“Std 520” is reference to the personality that is currently on the system. Std 520 is standard
personality.
Autosampler is now setup for the correct personality
