1. Check supplied components against list and pictures.
•Relay block including 3x relays
•Wiring harness supplied with wire ends bared or pre-terminated
•3 way switch with green and amber illumination.

3. Installation of automatic and manual torque converter lock
up controller.
Step 1: Run Wiring
•Remove glove box (2 screws at lower hinge).
•Unclip SRS connector panel by pulling forward and then passing back through the hole.
•Remove black plastic panel (3 screws) to access the car’s ECU behind the glovebox.
•Loosely place the LOCKUP CONTROLLER below the ECU.
•Locate the bared ends of the red, black, white and brown wires of the LOCK UP CONTROLLER and route
these wires to the ECU connector area.
•If installing AUTOMATIC LOCK UP CONTROLLER
oRoute the end of the orange wire out through the firewall from behind the glovebox area.
oJoin the end of the orange wire with one wire of the supplied fuse holder.
oAttach the supplied eyelet to the other wire of the fuse holder.

oAttach the fuse holder eyelet to the battery positive + terminal.
oEnsure orange wire and fuse holder is secured in such a way that it won’t chaff or abrade.
oConnect Grey wire to Battery Negative with eyelet supplied
Do NOT install the supplied fuse into the fuse holder at this time.
Step 2: Locate ECU wires
•Turn ignition OFF and remove key from ignition.
•Remove the appropriate connector from the ECU for your model of Land Cruiser. See diagram above.

With connector removed from ECU,
•Expose about 100mm of wiring from the connector back along the harness.
•Locate the SLU+ wire (PINK wire with GREEN trace) wire and the SLU- wire (BLACK wire) beside it.
Double check WIRING COLOURS against PIN LOCATION to ensure you have the correct wires. Diagrams are
above.
Step 3: Insert AUTOMATIC LOCKUP CONTROLLER into circuit
•Cut SLU+ and SLU- wires approximately 50mm from where they enter the connector
•Bare the ends of the wires and solder to previously run (Step 1) and positioned AUTOMATIC LOCKUP
CONTROLLER wires as per diagram below.

•SOLDER all wire joins to ensure a secure connection.
•INSULATE all wire joins with heat shrink and/or electrical tape.
•Double check WIRING COLOURS with location details in diagram to ensure correct
installation.
•Lay kit wiring back along ECU connector harness and secure with cable ties and electrical tape (or
similar) to ensure no strain on soldered connections and cabling is protected.
•Install connector securely back into ECU
•If installing AUTOMATIC LOCK UP CONTROLLER, you will also need to connect the orange wire to
the positive terminal of the vehicles starter battery. See Step 7.
•Replace the connector into the ECU.
Step 4: Pickup vehicle Speed signal
The vehicle speed signal might be referred to as SP1 for HDJ100 and SPD for UZJ100. For our purposes it is the
same thing.
With the appropriate connector removed from ECU,
•Expose about 100mm of wiring from the connector back along the harness.
•Locate the SP1/SPD (violet)
Double check WIRING COLOUR against PIN LOCATION to ensure you have the correct wires. Diagrams are
above.

•Access the Speed signal wire and about 80mm from the connector bare the insulation from the wire and
solder the purple kit wire to the bared wire.
•Insulate the soldered connection appropriately
•Lay kit wiring back along ECU connector harness and secure with cable ties and electrical tape
(or similar) to ensure no strain on soldered connections and cabling is protected.
Step 5: Install AUTOMATIC LOCKUP controller, relays, earth and
resistor
•Install the resistor to the underside of the metal bracket at the upper right of the glovebox opening using
the supplied self-tapping screws with the earth wire lug under one of the screws (The bracket is visible
once the black plastic trim behind the glovebox is removed)

•The controller and relays can be located behind the carpet lining the transmission tunnel in the passenger
foot well. Take care to ensure the carpet is massaged back into place to leave a neat appearance.
(Alternatively, the components could be located under the transmission console, but wiring might need to
be extended.)
Step 6: Switch installation and loose Red wire
•Run the switch to one of the switch blanks behind the gear lever on the console. Extensive filing of the
blank opening is required to fit switch. Be sure to test for fitment regularly while filing to avoid making the
hole too large. The switch can be removed from the harness using the white 4 pin connector. This helps to
pass the loom through the switch blank hole. Be sure to orientate the switch with the Green light facing
the front of the vehicle. Switch wiring colours can be found in Section Error! Reference source not found.

•The Red with fuses needs to be connected to 12V + Acc power. This can be found at rear of cigarette
lighter. Cut off the fuses (Fuse Tap adaptor) at the end of the red wire. (they are for later model land
cruisers)
At the cigarette lighter the GREEN wire is positive +. Bare this back and solder on.
Be sure not to confuse with the green wire for the cigarette globe illumination.
Step 7: Battery power feed
Power for the unit is supplied via the orange wire directly from the starting battery of the vehicle. Power is only
consumed by the kit if the ignition switch is at the IGN position.
•Run the orange & Grey wire through a suitable firewall grommet to the starting battery. Ensure the wire
secured along its length and protected from possible chaffing.
•Solder one end of the wired fuse holder to the end of the orange wire. Thoroughly insulate the connection.
•Crimp the supplied connector to the free bared end of the wired fuse holder and connect to the positive
terminal of the vehicles starter battery.
•Grey connect to Battery Negative. Or Earth.
Connecting the power wire to an Auxiliary battery may result in unpredictable behaviour of the
unit.

4. Operation
To activate the lock up in High speed Auto Mode; press the bottom down on the 3 way switch. This will illuminate
the Green Led light to show the Auto mode is active. When the vehicle is driven and the lock up speed is
achieved, 85km/h the torque converter will lock, The Amber led will come on to show locked converter. The
converter will remain locked until slowing to below the unlock speed, 80km/h.
When the switch is in the centre position and no lights are illuminated, the lock up controller is in-active, the torque
converter is controlled by the factory ECU signals only.
To activate the Low Speed Lock Up, press the top down on the 3 way switch. This will illuminate the Amber led to
show the Low Speed Setting is active. The Torque Converted will automatically lock at 35km/h and then unlock
below 30km/h. It is important that when driving in this Low Speed Setting you select the gears as if driving a
manual vehicle. This prevents any lugging on the motor by the transmission being in a too higher gear. The Green
Led light will come on when 85km/h is reached to show that high speed auto mode is active in the background.
NOTE: The first use of the electronic torque converter lock up kit may create a hot electrical smell inside the
vehicle. THIS IS NORMAL. The smell is coming from the resistor as it heats for the first time since new. This will
only last for approx. 5 minutes until operating temperature has been achieved. The smell should not re-occur after
this period or after first time use.
The controller is pre-configured out of the shop for automatic lock up at approx. 80km/h. We suggest this is the
ideal speed when driving in the 'D' Mode with a locked converter. When slowing from speeds above 75 where the
converter is locked, you do not have to disengage the converter as it is automatically un-locks the torque
converter at approx. 75km/h.
These settings have been chosen through many processes and testing and allows the best control and subtle
locking and unlocking actions. It also allows the vehicle to slow from highway speeds to 80km/h zones while
maintaining a locked converter for accelerating back to highway speeds, ie traveling through country town.
The Fitting of this kit is done so at your own risk. Richards Auto Electrical will not warrant any failures caused by
modification to your vehicle. Warranty is offered on all components of the kit for 12 months.

HOW TO USE THE AUTOMATIC LOCKUP KIT DUAL SWITCH
AUTOMATIC MODE
To activate the lock up in High Speed Auto Mode; press the top switch called AUTO.
This will illuminate the Green Led light to show the Auto mode is active.
When the vehicle is driven and the lock up speed is achieved (80km/h the torque converter will lock) the bottom
switch led will change from blue to light blue/ turquoise to show locked converter. The converter will remain
locked until slowing to below the unlock speed, 75km/h.
We suggest driving in this mode at all times. When slowing from speeds above 80 where the converter is locked,
you do not have to dis-engage the AUTO button as it is automatically un-locked.
FACTORY MODE
When the switches are off and lights are both blue illuminated, the lock up controller is not active, the torque
converter is controlled by the factory ECU signals only.
LOW SPEED MODE
To activate the Low Speed Lock Up, press the bottom LOW switch. The switch will turn Green. Both switches
will then be green. The Torque Converted will automatically lock at 35km/h and then unlock below 30km/h. It is
important that when driving in this Low Speed Setting you select the gears as if driving a manual vehicle. This
prevents any lugging on the motor by the transmission being in a too higher gear.
The controller is pre-configured out of the shop for automatic lock up at approx. 80km/h. We suggest this is the
ideal speed when driving in the ‘D’ Mode with a locked converter. When slowing from speeds above 80 where
the converter is locked, you do not have to dis-engage the converter as it is automatically un-locks the torque

We recommend when traveling at highway speeds with locked converter, use the ‘S’ mode for tip-tronic selection
in gear S6. This can help to get the transmission to select 6th gear more frequently.
Simply depress the low speed button to go back to Auto mode.
