Marking Directive (93/68/EEC).
About these instructions
The K8 amplifier with its seven output stages is extremely versatile: if all the output stages are not required for the
surround system in the main room, they can be used to provide sound in up to three additional rooms or listening zones
in the main room. It is possible to adjust the volume separately in the adjacent rooms or listening zones, or in parallel
with the main room.
All the controls and functions of the K8 which are frequently used are described in the first section of these operating
instructions.
The second part - 'Basic settings, Installation, Using the system for the first time' covers connections and settings
which are very seldom required; they are generally required only when the machine is set up and used for the first time.
Here you will also find a detailed description of the network settings required for connecting the K8 to your home
network.
For newcomers to networks we have prepared explanations of some of the important terms used in this technology and
other background information in the Chapter 'Network Terminology'.

K8 Multi Source System
Controls
All the important functions of the K8 can be operated using the buttons on the front panel. Direct operating buttons are
available for the basic functions, such as source / track selection, whereas rarely needed functions are controlled using
menus, which are called up using the // buttons.
All information regarding the state of the machine, the current track and the selected station are displayed on the screen;
the main items are displayed in highlighted form in a context-sensitive manner, and are clearly legible from some
distance. The following section describes in detail the function of the front panel buttons and the information displayed on
the screen.
On / Off switch
(On and Off switch)
A brief press on the button switches the machine on and off.
C
aution!
The mains button is not a mains isolation switch. Even when the screen
and the ON LED are switched off, parts of the machine are connected to
mains voltage.
If you know the machine will not be used for a protracted period, disconnect it
from the mains supply by withdrawing the mains plug from the socket.
For information on energy consumption please refer to the Chapter entitled
‘Notes on Energy Saving’.
Status LED
The LED above the button indicates the operational state of the K8.
LED State
off Energy Saver switched on
The machine is switched off; minimal current drain
red Energy Saver switched off
The machine is switched off; expanded stand-by function with
slightly higher current drain
blue Machine switched on - the K8 is fully ready for use.
ECO standby is the K8’s basic, default setting. If you wish to use
the expanded functions of Comfort stand-by, you must switch that
function on in the ‘System settings / Standby mode’ menu.
For a fuller explanation of the different stand-by modes, the exact
range of functions and the stand-by current drain please refer to
the Chapters “System settings / Standby mode” and “Economical
use of energy”, and the Specification in the Appendix.

7
Front panel sockets
USB BD
USB 2.0 socket for USB memory sticks, as storage medium for BD-Live functions,
and playing back audio and video files.
This USB socket can be used to play DivX, WMA, JPEG or MP3 files. The
method of operation is described in the Chapter 'Operating the disc player
(media player)'.
The USB storage medium can draw power from the USB socket, provided that
the device’s current drain is within the USB norm (< 500 mA). Hard disks with a
current drain of >500 mA can also be connected, provided that they are
powered by their own mains PSU.
To use BD-Live you must connect a memory stick with a capacity of at least 1 GB to
the USB socket.
The memory medium must be formatted using the FAT16 or FAT32 file system.
(Phones / headphone)
Socket for stereo headphones with an impedance of at least 50 Ω.
When headphones are plugged in, the loudspeakers connected to the K8 in the
main room are automatically switched off.
When headphones are in use, the - button (menu loudspeaker and
headphone modes) can be pressed to switch on the Dolby headphone function,
which provides spatial surround reproduction via headphones.
The use of headphones
Continuous listening to programme material via earphones or head-
phones at very high volume can result in permanent hearing loss. You
can avoid damaging your health by not listening via headphones or ear-
phones at high levels for long periods.

Disc drawer
A long press on the front panel button opens and closes the disc
drawer.
Alternatively the drawer can be opened with a long press on the - button
on the remote control handset, and closed using the - button on the
handset.
Place the disc in the depression in the drawer;
the
side to be played must
face down.
If the drawer should jam, it is possible to open it manually. For more information
please refer to the Chapter entitled ‘Trouble Shooting’.

Display elements / Remote control receiver
Remote control
receiver
(behind the Perspex screen)
When operating the
FM100
remote control system, please point the handset
towards the receiver.
There must be no obstacle which blocks the line of sight between the FM100
and the remote control receiver in the K8. The function of the remote control
system can also be adversely affected if the K8 is set up behind glass cabinet
doors.
Certain types of lamp, including fluorescent and energy-saving bulbs, cause
interference to the remote control system. It is essential to avoid such light
falling directly on the receiver, otherwise the effective range of the system may
be markedly reduced.
If there is no direct line-of-sight connection between the remote control handset
and the K8 (e.g. machine installed in a cabinet), an alternative is to use an
E2000 external remote control receiver, which is connected to the socket
marked ‘E2000 MAIN’ on the back panel. The receiver can be set up in any
position within the range of effect of the remote control handset.
Screen
All the information regarding the machine’s status, the current music track and
list navigation is displayed on the graphic screen of the K8. The display is
context-sensitive, and its content may vary according to the capabilities and
facilities of the service or medium currently selected.
The essential information is highlighted on the screen in context-sensitive form.
Additional information is shown above and below the main data in the form of
symbols. The table below lists and explains the symbols employed.
The screen’s brightness can be reduced to suit your personal preference and
requirements (see the Chapter entitled ‘System settings (System con-
figuration menu)’.
In Standby mode the screen can display the time of day (see Chapter ‘Alarm
timer, Alarm timer menu, Screen brightness menu (Stdby)’.

Basic functions of the K8
This chapter describes the basic functions of the K8, which are always available, regardless of the currently selected
source.
Source switching
F
M
100
K8
The desired source is selected by pressing the source button
on the
front panel, repeatedly if necessary.
The source buttons on the FM100 remote control handset can be used to select
the desired listening source directly. The buttons are assigned as follows:
Streaming Client
(incl. digital USB Audio iPod connection)
Disc Player
Radio
A brief press cycles through the audio sources AUDIO 1 (IN 1), AUDIO 2 (IN 2),
AUDIO 3 (IN 3) and iPod (analogue iPod connection with AV function).
A brief press cycles through the video sources TV, HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, AV
IN1, AV IN2, AV IN3 and AV IN4.
Inputs to which no source device is connected can be disabled in the “System
configuration menu / Source names” menu. These sources will then be skipped
when you cycle through using the and buttons.
To make them easier to identify, a plain text name can be assigned to the
external source devices TV
AUDIO 1 (IN 1), AUDIO 2 (IN 2), AUDIO 3 (IN 3),
AV_IN1 ... AV_IN4, HDMI1 ... HDMI3 in the “System configuration menu /
Source names” menu.
Internal sources, iPods connected to the
K8
and source devices connected via
the E
LINK
system, can be controlled using the FM100 remote control
handset or the front panel buttons, provided that they are selected as the
current listening source. For details on operating the K8’s integral source
devices please refer to the following chapters.
The audio signal from the selected source is available at the LINE-OUT sockets
for purposes such as recording using an audio recorder.
Volume control
F
M
100
K8
- +
The volume of the K8 can be adjusted in fine increments using the
/
buttons on the machine’s front panel, or - +rocker on the
remote control handset. A brief press of one of the volume buttons increases or
reduces the volume level by one increment. Holding one of the volume buttons
pressed in changes the volume level continuously.
The buttons on the K8 always control the volume in the main
room.
The volume in adjacent rooms can be adjusted remotely using E2000 infra-red
receivers installed in those areas.

15
Tone control settings
(Tone menu)
FM100
K8
/
Tone settings
The
K8
features a range of facilities for fine-tuning the sound to suit your
personal preference, the listening environment and the particular recording cur-
rently being played. All the tone control settings are grouped in the TONE
menu.
A brief press on the button calls up the tone control menu as a “Pop-Up”,
whereas a long press calls up the on-screen display on a screen connected to
the system.
The tone control menu can be called up either using the buttons on the
remote control handset, or on the machine itself using the Tone (tone control
settings) menu point in the menu.
Balance L/R
This menu point is used to alter the balance in level between the left and right
loudspeakers. The setting affects the front, surround and rear speakers.
Balance F/B
This menu point is used to alter the balance in level between the front and rear
loudspeakers.
The balance can be adjusted in increments of 1 dB; the screen always displays
the current value.
The primary purpose of the Balance setting in the Tone menu is to compensate
for inadequacies in the audio mix of the recording currently being played. For
the basic calibration of your loudspeakers you should adjust the settings in the
“Loudspeaker / Level” menu.
Subwoofer level
Adjusting the volume of the sub-woofer.
In our experience the mix of the LFE channel (Low-Frequency Effects) can vary
widely from recording to recording. This menu point provides a quick means of
adjusting the sub-woofer volume to suit the recording being played.
Tone Control
This menu point can be used to disable (by-pass) the K8’s tone controls.
To switch off the tone controls, select the “OFF” setting. When the tone controls
are switched off, any adjustments you make to the following menu points
“BASS” and “TREBLE” have no effect.

16
Bass / Treble
(tone settings)
These two menu points can be used to alter the high-frequency (treble) and
low-frequency (bass) settings when required.
The primary purpose of the settings in the Tone menu is to compensate for
inadequacies in the audio mix of the recording currently being played.
If you wish to alter the fundamental tone settings for your loudspeakers, you
should make adjustments in the “Loudspeaker / Tone” menu.
Loudness
The K8 is equipped with an automatic level-dependent volume control system
(LOUDNESS), designed to compensate for the frequency-dependent sen-
sitivity of the ear at very low volume, caused by the physiology of the human
auditory system.
This set-up option switches the level-dependent volume control on and off.
Dynamics
This menu point can be used to limit the dynamic range of audio reproduction,
i.e. to reduce the difference in volume between very quiet and very loud pas-
sages.
Set-up options:
Nightmode Greatly reduced audio dynamic range. Quiet passages are
amplified significantly, loud passages are considerably
quieter. This setting is particularly suitable for listening at low
volume, e.g. when neighbours must not be disturbed.
Normal (Medium)
Quiet passages are amplified slightly, whereas extreme
volume peaks are reduced. This setting is ideal for normal
listening at room volume.
Full Full dynamic range, without compression. Since quiet pas-
sages are not lifted at this setting, it is important not to select
too low a listening volume, otherwise very quiet passages
may not be properly audible. There is no automatic reduc-
tion in the volume of loud effects, i.e. very high maximum
volume may be obtained at this setting.
If the Dolby Volume function is activated (see next page), this menu item is not
available because the dynamic range is set automatically in this case.
Lip

Sync
(sound delay)
Some video monitors - especially 100 Hz types, plasma screens and
progressive-scan monitors - generate the picture with a slight delay. In such
cases this may result in loss of synchronisation between sound and picture.
Since various source devices feature different picture transmission processes
(analogue, progressive, SDI, HDMI), the sound delay may also be caused by
the source device.
The Sound Delay menu point can be used to set a delay in sound reproduction
in the range 0 ... 500 ms, with the aim of synchronising sound and picture
perfectly (“lip-syncing”).

Dolby
Vol
ume
Dolby Volume is a new type of process which maintains an impression of con-
stant volume regardless of the source selected and the current programme
material. Dolby Volume eliminates the major fluctuations in volume level which
can occur when, for example, advertisements appear on the TV.
Dolby Volume also automatically matches the reproduced frequency response
to suit the sensitivity of the human auditory system at low volumes.
The overall result is improved naturalness and comprehensibility when listening
at low volume, below the original volume.
Leveler: The Leveler setting determines the extent to which the Dolby
Volume function compensates for volume differences.
Off The Dolby-Volume function is switched off
High The function almost completely compensates for
volume differences
Medium The function compensates about half-way for major
jumps in volume
Low Differences in volume are reduced slightly
Half Mode: The “Half-Mode” setting affects the range of effect of the
automatic frequency response adjustment.
Off The frequency response adjustment affects the full
range of volume.
On The frequency response adjustment only takes effect
at low volume.
The K8 remembers this setting for each source separately.
Mode (
SRND Processing
)
(loudspeaker playback)
At this point, the main room loudspeakers can be switched between the
following modes of operation:
Stereo: Stereo sound, via the two main loudspeakers only (left / right).
Ideal for playing stereophonic music recordings without a screen
display.
Disco: This sound field is particularly suitable for providing an even
spread of sound over a dance area. The sound signal is
reproduced with equal power by the main and surround
loudspeakers, without echo or delay.
Surround: The decoder detects an encoded digital multi-channel signal,
decodes it and passes it to all the output channels. The front
panel screen displays the current decoder mode. If the signal is
analogue, the decoder always uses Dolby Pro Logic IIx
decoding.
PL IIx: The Dolby Pro Logic process is used to generate surround in-
formation from the two-channel music signal, so that the music is
reproduced through all the loudspeakers of the surround system.
Particularly recommended when playing programme material
encoded with Dolby Pro Logic.
IN PL II. mode the following choices are available:
Cinema for movies
Music for music videos and concert.
Matrix for mono programme material
NEO:6 A process for generating surround information from the two-
channel audio signal, in a similar manner to Dolby Pro Logic. This
provides spatial reproduction via all the surround system’s
channels.
In NEO:6 mode the following choices are available::
Cinema for movies
Music for music videos and concerts
The SRND Processing setting only affects reproduction through loudspeakers.
For headphone operation the “Headphone Processing” setting is available.

Picture
settings
This menu is called up via the menu, or the button on the
FM100.
A brief press on the button calls up the Video Settings menu.
All settings entered in this menu - apart from screen-saver - are stored for the
currently active video source, and managed separately for each source. The
picture settings which you select for the active video source are automatically
restored every time you switch back to this source.
Processing
This menu point is used to by-pass the video processor. In the by-pass setting
the picture signals are passed directly to the TV connected to the system,
without any processing.

D Pass
-
Through
3-D picture signals cannot be processed by the K8, but can be passed through
to the TV set (3-D Pass-Through function). Select the “Bypass” setting if you
are using a source device which delivers 3-D pictures.
Select the Bypass setting if you wish the picture signals to be unprocessed. In
this case the output signal corresponds pixel-perfect to the input signal. This is
the best setting for HDMI source devices whose resolution is an exact match to
the resolution of your video monitor.
Achieving best possible picture quality from Blu

ray
and DVD
discs
To achieve absolutely exact, pixel-perfect picture quality from Blu-ray and DVD
content generated by the internal disc player, the K8’s internal HDMI video
processor is automatically by-passed when a disc is played. The video settings
menu is therefore not available when the disc player is selected as source. The
video settings for the disc to be played should be entered using the disc
player’s setup menu (see Chapter
'
Setup menu (Settings) / Display
category
'
).
Brightness
Please adjust the brightness until black portions of the picture are displayed
solid black. This adjustment is best carried out using a suitable test card (e.g.
universal test image).
Contrast
Please adjust the contrast until white portions of the picture are displayed pure
white. This adjustment is best carried out using a suitable test card (e.g. univer-
sal test image).
Saturation
This setting is used to adjust the strength of colour in the picture. Select a
setting at which the colour reproduction looks natural. Realistic static pictures or
film sequences are best for this.
Hue
This setting is used to alter the colour balance. This adjustment is also best car-
ried out using realistic pictures, e.g. skin tones.

20
Sharpness
These adjustments affect the apparent sharpness of the image. The subjective
perception of the image can often be improved if you adjust the sharpness of
the picture material, especially if the picture source is of poor quality.
Overscan
Overscan is a technique which is employed to trim off the margins of the picture
by a small percentage, and to compensate for this by increasing the remainder
of the image to fill the screen. Since use of the Overscan function forfeits part of
the picture content, and also reduces the picture resolution slightly, it should
only be used for picture sources which produce blurred picture margins
.
Overscan is only available for the analogue picture inputs, as it produces untidy
picture margins when used with HDMI.
Resolution
AUTO, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
In this menu point you can adjust the resolution of the video signal generated by
the K8 to match the resolution of your video monitor.
Framerate
Auto,
50, 60
Setting the frame repeat rate of the video signal generated by the K8
If you select one of the set-up options 50 Hz or 60 Hz, the K8 generates the
output signal at the set rate, regardless of the source material. In the Auto
setting the K8 attempts to select the optimum frame rate setting to match the
capabilities of the TV set connected to the system, taking into account the
source being reproduced.
In Auto mode it takes a few seconds longer to switch between video sources,
since the K8 first has to match the signal characteristics of the source with the
capabilities of your TV set.
Aspect
AUTO, 1:1 (Original), V-33, H-33, V+33, H+V-33
The term Aspect Ratio refers to the width : height ratio of the reproduced pic-
ture. The most common aspect ratios are 4 : 3, which is familiar from the early
years of television, and the 16 : 9 wide-screen format introduced into the home
arena with the DVD.
The K8 is capable of adjusting the signal from a vast variety of source devices
to suit the geometry of your video monitor.
You can also adjust the aspect ratio directly using the button on the
FM100 handset. Repeated brief presses of the button are used to cycle
through the K8’s various corrective factors. Use this method to select the
appropriate corrective factor, so that the picture supplied by the source appears
on your monitor with as little distortion and wasted screen area as possible.
A more detailed explanation of this setting can be found in the Chapter entitled
‘Glossary / Additional information’ under the point ‘Aspect Ratio – choosing the
right corrective factor’.
