General
Description
The TYCO Model Ultra K34 Standard
Coverage Upright Storage Sprinkler is
an FM Approved standard response,
standard coverage sprinkler for dry or
preaction systems. The sprinkler offers
a maximum coverage area of 100 ft²
(9,3 m²).
The Model Ultra K34 Sprinkler has
successfully undergone full-scale
re testing at FM Global for ceiling-
only storage applications of Class III
commodities.

The Model Ultra K34 Standard Cov-
erage Upright Storage Sprinkler
described herein must be installed
and maintained in compliance with this
document, as well as with the applica-
ble standards of the National Fire Pro-
tection Association (NFPA), in addition
to the standards of any other authori-
ties having jurisdiction (for example, FM
Global). Failure to do so may impair the
performance of these devices.
The owner is responsible for main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. Contact the installing contrac-
tor or product manufacturer with any
questions.

Operation
When the glass bulb reaches its rated
temperature of 286°F (141°C), the glass
bulb bursts allowing the sprinkler to
activate and ow water.

Installation
Install the TYCO Model Ultra K34 Stan-
dard Coverage Upright Sprinkler in
accordance with this section.
General Instructions
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler
if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss
of liquid form the bulb. With the sprin-
kler held horizontal, a small air bubble
should be present. For the Model Ultra
K34 Sprinkler, the diameter of the air
bubble is approximately 9/32 in. (7,0
mm).
A leak-tight 1-1/4 in. NPT sprinkler joint
should be obtained by applying pipe-
thread sealant to the sprinkler threads
and wrench-tightening using only the
W-Type 26 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.
Figure 2).
Sprinkler Installation
Install the Model Ultra K34 Upright
Sprinkler only in the upright position in
accordance with the following steps:
Step 1. Apply pipe-thread sealant to
the sprinkler threads.

Step 2. Hand-tighten the sprinkler into
sprinkler tting. Do not apply force
to the glass bulb, and grasp only by
the lower ends of the frame arms and
wrench ats while hand-tightening.
Step 3. Apply the W-Type 26 Sprinkler
Wrench shown in Figure 2 to the sprin-
kler by fully seating the wrench recess
on the sprinkler wrench ats shown in
Figure 1.
Step 4. Wrench-tighten the sprinkler
to obtain a leak-tight joint, either 1 to
1-1/2 turns beyond hand-tightened or
by applying a minimum-to-maximum
torque of 30 ft-lb to 40 ft-lb (40 N·m
to 50 N·m).
NOTICE
Higher levels of torque may distort
sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage
or impairment of sprinkler.
Care and
Maintenance
The TYCO Model Ultra K34 Standard
Coverage Upright Sprinkler must be
maintained and serviced in accordance
with this section.
Before closing a re protection system
main control valve for maintenance
work on the re protection system
that it controls, obtain permission to
shut down the affected re protection
system from the proper authorities
and notify all personnel who may be
affected by this decision.
Inspection, testing, and maintenance
must be performed as indicated below
and in accordance with the local
requirements and/or national codes.
Any impairment must be immediately
corrected.
The owner is responsible for the
inspection, testing, and maintenance of
their re protection system and devices
in compliance with this document, as
well as with the applicable standards
of any authorities having jurisdiction.
Contact the installing contractor or
product manufacturer regarding any
questions.
Automatic sprinkler systems are rec-
ommended to be inspected, tested,
and maintained by a qualied Inspec-
tion Service in accordance with local
requirements and/or national codes.
