Beforeyoubegin,werecommendyouuninstallany
othermodemsyouhaveinyoursystemandunplug
alltelephonelinesconnectedtothesemodems.
Refertoyouroldmodem’sdocumentationfor
instructions.IfyouhaveanolderU.S.Robotics
modem,seethe“UninstallingaU.S.Robotics
Modem”chapterinthemanualthatcamewithyour
older modem.
WritethenewU.S.Roboticsmodem’sserialnumber
intheboxbelow.Theserialnumberislocatedonthe
whitebarcodestickeronthemodemandonthe
modem’s box.
NOTE:Itisveryimportantthatyouhaveyourserial
numberwrittendownforfuturereference.Ifyou
everneedtocallourTechnicalSupportdepartment,
youwillneedthisnumbertoreceiveassistance.
Step 1
Insert the modem into the
empty PCI expansion slot.
Turnoffandunplugyourcomputerandall
peripherals.Removethecomputer’scover.(Ifyoudo
notknowhowtodothis,refertoyour
computer’s documentation.)
CAUTION:Toavoidriskofelectricalshock,makesure
yourcomputerandallperipheraldevicesareturned
offandunpluggedfromelectricaloutletsandthat
anytelephonecableshavebeenremovedfrom
existingmodemsandtheirwalljacks.
Removetheexpansionslotcoveratthebackofan
emptyPCIexpansionslot.PCIslotsare3.5inches
longandareusuallywhiteplasticlinedwithmetal.
Theslotcoverisonthebackofthecomputerand
coversanopeningonthecomputer’scase.Mostslot
coversareheldinplacewithascrew.Insertthe
modem,goldedgefirst,intotheslot.Youwillneedto
pressthemodeminfirmlysothatitisseated
properlyinitsslot.Whenthemodemisinstalled
correctly,youwillnolongerseeanypartofthegold
edge.Themodem’smetalbracketwillcoverthe
openingonthebackofthecomputer.Securethe
modemwiththescrewyouremoved.Replacethe
computer’scover.Reconnectandturnon
all peripherals.

Step 2
Install the modem drivers.
NOTE:Ifatanytimeduringtheinstallationyouare
promptedtoselectthelocationofyourinstallation
drivers,thefollowingarethecorrectlocationsonthe
InstallationCD(assumingD:isyourCD-ROMdrive).
Windows XP/2000/Me/98/95 drivers:D:\Drivers
Windows NT4 drivers:D:\Drivers\WinNT4
NOTE:WindowsXP/2000/NT/Meusersmustbe
loggedinusinganaccountwithadministrative
privilegesbeforeattemptingtoinstallthemodem

Verify that the modem is
properly installed.
IfyouhaveWindowsXP
Category View:ClickWindowsStart,andclickControl
Panel. Click NetworkandInternetConnections,Phone
and Modem Options,andthenclicktheModemstab.
Youshouldseeadescriptionofyourmodemanda
COMportsetting.Click Modem,highlightthe
descriptionofyournewmodem,andclickProperties.
Click the Diagnosticstab. ClicktheQueryModem
button.Youshouldseeaseriesofcommandsand
responsesfromthemodem. Thismeansthatthe
installationwasasuccess.Ifyourmodemisnotlisted
and/oryoudonotseeaseriesofcommandsand
responses,makesurethatyourinternalmodemis
physicallyinstalledcorrectlyinyourcomputer.With
poweroff,pressthemodeminfirmlysothatitis
seatedproperlyinitsslot.Whenthemodemis
installedcorrectly,youwillnolongerseeanypartof
thegoldedge.Ifyourmodemstilldoesnotwork,you
mayneedtoremoveitandreinstallitinanother
availablePCIslot.ShutdownandrestartyourPC.

Step3
Connect the modem to an
analog phone line.
Plugoneendofthephonecordintothejackon
themodemlabeled andplugtheotherend
intoananalogphonewalljack.
Whenyouarenotusingthemodem,youcanusea
telephonebypluggingthetelephone’scordinto
themodem’s jack.

IfyouhaveWindowsNT
Click Windows Start, Settings, andthenControlPanel.
Double-clicktheModemsicon.IntheModems
Propertiesscreen,youshouldseeadescriptionfor
yourmodem.Ifyourmodemisnotlisted,makesure
thatyourinternalmodemisphysicallyinstalled
correctlyinyourcomputer.Withpoweroff,pressthe
modeminfirmlysothatitisseatedproperlyinitsslot.
Whenthemodemisinstalledcorrectly,youwillno
longerseeanypartofthegoldedge.Ifyourmodem
stilldoesnotwork,youmayneedtoremoveitand
reinstallitinanotheravailablePCIslot.Shutdown
andrestartyourPC.Checkyourmodemagainusing
ControlPanelasdescribedpreviously.Checkfor
hardwareconflictsbyclickingWindowsStart,
Programs, AdministrativeTools(Common),Windows
NT Diagnostics. Select the Resourcestab.
IfyouhaveWindowsMe/98/95
Click Windows Start, Settings, andthenControlPanel.
Double-clicktheModemsicon.IntheModems
Propertiesscreen,youshouldseeadescriptionfor
yourmodem.ClicktheDiagnosticstab.Makesure
thatthecorrectCOMPort(modem)ishighlighted.
Click the MoreInfobutton.Youshouldseeaseriesof
commandsandresponsesfromthemodem.This
meansthattheinstallationwasasuccess.Ifyour
modemisnotlistedand/oryoudonotseeaseriesof
commandsandresponses,makesurethatyour
internalmodemisphysicallyinstalledcorrectlyinyour
computer.Withpoweroff,pressthemodeminfirmly
sothatitisseatedproperlyinitsslot.Whenthe
modemisinstalledcorrectly,youwillnolongersee
anypartofthegoldedge.Ifyourmodemstilldoes
notwork,youmayneedtoremoveitandreinstallitin
anotheravailableslot.ShutdownandrestartyourPC.
CheckyourmodemagainusingtheControlPanelas
described previously.
Classic View:ClickWindowsStart,andclickControl

IfyouhaveWindows2000
Click Windows Start, Settings,andthenControlPanel.
Double-clickthePhoneandModemOptionsicon. Click
the Modemstab.Makesurethatthecorrectmodemis
highlighted.ClickthePropertiesbutton.Clickthe
Diagnosticstab.ClicktheQueryModembutton.You
shouldseeaseriesofcommandsandresponsesfrom
themodem. Thismeansthattheinstallationwasa
success.Ifyourmodemisnotlistedand/oryoudonot
seeaseriesofcommandsandresponses,makesure
thatyourinternalmodemisphysicallyinstalled
correctlyinyourcomputer.Withpoweroff,pressthe
modeminfirmlysothatitisseatedproperlyinitsslot.
Whenthemodemisinstalledcorrectly,youwillno
longerseeanypartofthegoldedge.Ifyourmodem
stilldoesnotwork,youmayneedtoremoveitand
reinstallitinanotheravailablePCIslot.Shutdownand
restartyourPC.CheckyourmodemagainusingControl
Panelasdescribedpreviously.

6.
Step 5
Install software and register
your modem.
IfyouhaveLinux
RebootthePCandnotethatanotherserialportis
listedalongwiththedevicename(/dev/ttyX),
indicatingthemodemispresent.Logintothe
system.Checkthatthemodemiscommunicating
properly.Ifworkinginashellenvironment,starta
Minicomterminalsessionfromtheterminalprompt.If
usingXWindows,useMinicomthroughashell
windoworusethedial-upprogram(Kpppor
equivalent).Makesurethatyourinternalmodemis
physicallyinstalledcorrectlyinyourcomputer.With
poweroff,pressthemodeminfirmlysothatitis
seatedproperlyinitsslot.Whenthemodemis
installedcorrectly,youwillnolongerseeanypartof
thegoldedge.Ifyourmodemstilldoesnotwork,you
mayneedtoremoveitandreinstallitinanother
availablePCIslot.ShutdownandrestartyourPC.
UsingKpppinXWindows:
1)ExecutetheKpppprogram(orotherdial-up
program)fromtheInternetsubmenu.
2)Within theKpppprogram,clicktheSetupbutton,
then the Devicetab,andthenselectthedevice
nameofthemodemfromthepull-downmenu.
3)ClicktheModemtab,thenclicktheQueryModem
button.About15secondslaterawindowshould
appearwithI-screeninformationfromthemodem,
indicatingasuccessfulinstallation.
Using Minicom:
1)Launchaterminal(shell)session.
2)Createasymboliclinkforthemodemusingthe
following commands:
cd/dev<enter>
rmmodem<enter>
ln-sttySX<enter>
3)TypeMinicom<enter>tostartMinicom.
4)IfthemodeminitializesunderMinicom,type“AT”
<enter>.Ifyoureceive“OK,”yourmodemhas
installed successfully.
Re-inserttheInstallationCD.TheCD’sinstallation
utilityshouldstartautomatically.TheSetupWizard
ontheCDguidesyouthroughinstallingtheprogram
group(includingInternetCallNotification,
ControlCenter,andoptionalfaxmodemsoftware)and
registeringyourmodem.
NOTE:IftheInstallationCDinterfacedoesnotrun
automatically,clickWindowsStartandthenclickRun.
Inthe“Run”dialogbox,typeD:\setup.exe.Ifyour
CD-ROMdriveusesadifferentletter,typethatletter
inplaceof“D.”

7.
Troubleshooting
Having problems with your
modem? Try these basic
troubleshooting steps first.
1) Isyourphonecordproperlyconnected?Thephone
cordshouldbepluggedintothejackonthemodemandinto
thewallphonejack.Usethephonecordincludedinyour
modem’sboxifpossible.
2) Isyourmodemproperlyinstalledinyour
computer?
Possiblesolution:Refertothe“Verifythatthemodemis
properlyinstalled”section of thisInstallationGuide for
possiblesolutions based onyour particular
operating system.
OPTIONAL: Enabling the
Gaming Mode Feature
YourmodemincludestheGamingMode featurefor
enhancedonlinegamingperformance.Turnonfor
fasterresponsetimesinonlinegames;turnofffor
Webbrowsing,e-mail,anddownloadingfiles.
GototheD:\Drivers\Gamingdirectoryonthe
InstallationCDanddouble-clickthegmtray.exefile.
(IfyourCD-ROMdriveusesadifferentletter,goto
thatletterinplaceof“D.”)Thiswillautomatically
installtheGamingModefeaturetoyoursystem.
Using the Gaming Mode
Feature
1)OnceyouhaveenabledtheGamingModefeature,
youwillseeamodemicon onthetoolbarof
yourWindowsdesktop.Thisiconisusedtoenablethe
GamingModefeatureonyourmodem.
2)ToenabletheGamingModefeature,simplyright-
clickthe iconwhenyouareNOTonlineand
select GamingModeEnabled.
3)InordertodisableGamingModefornormalWeb
browsing,right-clickthe iconwhenyouareNOT
onlineandselectGamingModeDisabled.
NOTETOLINUXUSERS:Thissystrayiconwasnot
designedforusewithLinux.YouwillhavetoissueAT
commandstothemodemtocontrolGamingMode.
•ToenableGamingMode:AT&FG

Possiblesolution:Youmaynothavethecorrectmodemtype
selectedinyoursoftwareorinWindows.ClickWindows
Start, Settings,and ControlPanel. When ControlPanel
opens,clickModems.Youwillseealistofinstalledmodems.
Mycomputerisn’trecognizingmymodem.
Windows XP/2000/Me/98/95:IfPlugandPlayfailstofindthe
modemasnewhardware,youneedtocheckthefollowing:
•ConfirmthatthemodemisfirmlyseatedinthePCIslot.
Themodemshouldsitevenlyintheslotwithnopartof
thegold edge showing.
•TryinstallingthemodeminanotherPCIslot.
•CheckyourcomputermanualtomakesurethatthePCI
slotisconfiguredproperly.
WindowsNT4.0: Youwillneedtorunasetupprogramfor
WindowsNT4.0.This programislocatedonyour Installation
CDatD:\Drivers\WinNT4.
Mymodemappearedtoinstallcorrectlybutseems
tobeperformingerratically.
Possiblesolution:AlthoughPCIdevicescanshareIRQs,there
aredevicesonthemarketthatdonotshareIRQsproperly.If
themodemhasbeenassignedtoanIRQwithoneofthese
devices,themodemmayperformerratically.
Windows Me/98/95:Right-clicktheMyComputericonon
yourdesktop.ClickProperties, and then the DeviceManager
tab.Double-click the Computericonatthe topofthe device
list.Youwillseealistingofyoursystem’sIRQsandthe
devicestowhichtheyareassigned.Locateyourmodemand
theIRQwhichitisassigned.IfthisIRQisbeingusedbyany
otherdevices,itmaybecausingthemodemtowork
improperly.Eitheryourmodem orthedevicewhichshares an
IRQwithyourmodemwillhavetobereassignedtoanother
IRQinordertoresolve yourconflict.Youmaywantto try
installingthemodeminanotherPCIslot,orrefertothe
sharingdevice’sdocumentationformoreinformationabout
removing,disabling,orrelocatingit.
Problems
Mysoftwareisn’trecognizingmymodem.
Possible solution:Your communications softwaremay not
functionproperlyifyouhavemorethanoneversionofthe
softwareinstalled,youareusinganolderversion,oryouhave
morethanonecommunicationssoftwarepackageinstalledon
yoursystem.Wehighlyrecommendusingthe
communicationssoftwareprovided with yourmodemon the
Installation CD.
Possiblesolution: Yoursoftware’sCOMport settingsmaybe
incorrectormaynot havethecorrectmodemtype selected.
Windows 98/95:Someoldersoftwareprogramsrequireyou
toselectaCOMportmanually.Thissoftwaremaynot
recognizeCOM5,whichis theonlyCOMportthatthis modem
canbeinstalledon. Toreconcilethisdiscrepancy,DOS Box
Supportmustalso be installed.Right-clickthe MyComputer
icon and then click Open.Double-clickyourCD-ROMdriveand
thendouble-click the Driversfolder. Right-click the
dosbox.inf fileand then left-clickInstall.Thiswill
automaticallyinstallDOSBoxfunctionalityonyoursystem.
RestartyourcomputertoenableDOSBoxfunctionality.As
longasthesoftwareisconfiguredtoCOM4,DOSBoxSupport
willautomaticallyenablethesoftwaretofindthemodem
onCOM5.
Possiblesolution:Ifyouareusingsoftwarethatusesa
Windowsmodemdescriptionandyouhadapreviousmodem
installed,youmayneed toupdateyoursoftware’ssetting to
reflecttheuseoftheU.S.Robotics56KPerformance
Pro Modem.
Windows Me/98/95:TheU.S.Robotics56KPerformancePro
ModemwillinstallonCOM5onlyinWindowsMe,98,and95
andcannotbemovedtoanotherCOMport.Toconfirmthatthe
modem installed on COM 5, click Windows Start,Settings,
and Control Panel.Double-clickModems,selectyour
modem,and select Properties.Check your communication
software’sdocumentationforinstructionsonadjustingthe
portsettingsinyoursoftware.
Windows XP/2000/NT:Checkyourcommunicationsoftware’s
documentationforinstructions on adjustingtheport settings
inyoursoftwareandusethenextavailableport.

Mymodemisn’tachievinga56KInternetconnection.
TheV.92andV.90protocolsallowfordownloadspeedsofup
to56KandtheV.92protocoladdsuploadspeedsofupto48K,
butlineconditionsmay affecttheactualspeedsduring a
givenconnection.Duetounusualtelephoneline
configurations,someuserswillnotbeabletotakefull
advantageofV.92orV.90technologyatthistime.Inorderto
achievea V.92 orV.90 connection:
•Theserveryou’redialling intomustsupportand provide
adigitalV.92,V.90,or56Ksignal.YourISPcanprovide
youwithalist ofdial-upconnectionsandinformation on
whatthoseconnectionscurrentlysupport.
•ThetelephonelinebetweenyourISPandyourmodem
mustbecapableofsupportinga56Kconnectionand
containonlyoneanalog-to-digitalconversion.The56K
signalfromyourISPbeginsasadigitalsignal.
SomewherebetweentheISPandyourmodem,therewill
beadigital-to-analog signal conversionsothat your
modemcanreceivethedata.Theremustbenomore
thanoneanalog-to-digital signal conversioninthe path
fromyourISPtoyourmodem.Ifmorethanoneanalog-to-
digitalconversionoccurs,yourconnectspeedswill
defaulttoV.34(33.6Kbps).Theremayalsobe
impairmentsonthelocallinesbetweenyourISPand
yourmodem.Theseimpairmentscanpreventorlimit
V.92connectionspeeds.Alltelephonecallsarerouted
differently,soyoushouldtrymakingyour56Kconnection
severaltimes.Onewaytotestthisistodialintoalong
distancelocation.Long distance linesareoften much
clearerthanlocallines. Itisimportanttonote that
telephonecompaniesareconstantlyupgradingtheir
systems.Linesthatdonotsupport56Ktodaymay
support56Kinthenearfuture.
•YourmodemmustbeconnectingtoaV.92,V.90,or56K
server.Apairof33.6Kmodemswillnotconnecttoeach
otherat 56K speeds.
WindowsXP/2000/NT4.0:Thisissueshouldnotapplyto
WindowsXP,Windows 2000, orWindowsNT 4.0.
Mymodemwon’tdialoutordoesn’tanswer
incoming calls.
FORBOTHDIALINGANDANSWERINGPROBLEMS:
Possiblesolution:Youmayhaveabadphonecordconnection
toyourmodem,oryourphonecordmaybepluggedintothe
wrongjack.Thephone cordshouldbepluggedinto the
jackonthemodemandintothewallphonejack.Usethe
phonecordincludedinyourmodem’sboxifpossible.
Possiblesolution: Youmayhavedevices betweenthemodem
andthephonejack.Thereshouldbenolinesplitters,fax
machines,orotherdevicesbetweenthemodemandthe
walljack.
OFFICE USERS:
Possiblesolution: Youmayhaveplugged yourmodem’sphone
cordintoadigitalline.Thiscandamageyourmodem.Contact
thedepartmentresponsiblefor yourphonesystemifyou are
unsurewhetherornotyourphonelineisdigital.
Possiblesolution:Ifyourphonesystemrequiresdialing“9”to
accessanoutsideline,be suretoadd“9”beforethe number
youaredialing.
VOICEMAILUSERS:
Possiblesolution:Ifyouhavevoicemailprovidedbyyour
localphonecompany,yourdialtonemaybealteredwhen
messagesarewaiting.Retrieveyourvoicemailtorestore
yournormal dial tone.
Mymodemsoundslikeit’stryingtoconnectto
anothermodembutfails.
Possiblesolution:Youmayhaveapoorconnection.Allcalls
arerouteddifferently,sotryplacingthecallagain.

Physically disconnect the
modem from the computer.
Turnoffandunplugyourcomputerand
all peripherals.
CAUTION:Toavoidriskofelectricalshock,makesure
yourcomputerandallperipheraldevicesareturned
offandunpluggedfromelectricaloutletsandthat
anytelephonecableshavebeenremovedfromthe
modemandfromthewalljack.
Removethecomputer’scover.(Ifyoudonotknow
howtodothis,refertoyourcomputer’sdocumenta-
tion.)Locatethemodeminsidethecomputerand
removethescrewthatattachesthemodem’smetal
brackettothecomputer.Removethemodemfrom
itsslot.Replacethecomputer’scover.
Uninstalling Your Modem
Uninstalling the
modem drivers.

Click Windows Start, Settings, Control Panel.Double-
click Modems(orPhoneandModemforWindows

Limited Warranty
HARDWARE: U.S. Robotics warrants to the
end user (“Customer”) that this hardware
product will be free from defects in
workmanship and materials, under normal
use and service, for the following length of
time from the date of purchase from
U.S. Robotics or its authorized reseller:
Two (2) years
U.S. Robotics’ sole obligation under this
express warranty shall be, at U.S. Robotics’
option and expense, to repair the defective
product or part, deliver to Customer an
equivalent product or part to replace the
defective item, or if neither of the two
foregoing options is reasonably available,
U.S. Robotics may, in its sole discretion,
refund to Customer the purchase price paid
for the defective product. All products that

are replaced will become the property of
U.S. Robotics. Replacement products may
be new or reconditioned. U.S. Robotics
warrants any replaced or repaired product
or part for ninety (90) days from shipment,
or the remainder of the initial warranty
period, whichever is longer.
SOFTWARE: U.S. Robotics warrants to
Customer that each software program
licensed from it will perform in substantial
conformance to its program specifications,
for a period of ninety (90) days from the
date of purchase from U.S. Robotics or its
authorized reseller. U.S. Robotics
warrants the media containing software
against failure during the warranty period.
No updates are provided. U.S. Robotics’
sole obligation under this express
warranty shall be, at U.S. Robotics’ option
and expense, to refund the purchase price
paid by Customer for any defective
software product, or to replace any
defective media with software which
substantially conforms to applicable U.S.
Robotics published specifications.
Customer assumes responsibility for the
selection of the appropriate applications
program and associated reference
materials. U.S. Robotics makes no
warranty or representation that its
software products will meet Customer’s
requirements or work in combination with
any hardware or applications software
products provided by third parties, that
the operation of the software products will
be uninterrupted or error free, or that all
defects in the software products will be
corrected. For any third-party products
listed in the U.S. Robotics software product
documentation or specifications as being
compatible, U.S. Robotics will make
reasonable efforts to provide compatibility,
except where the noncompatibility is
caused by a “bug” or defect in the third
party’s product or from use of the software
product not in accordance with U.S.
Robotics’ published specifications or
User Guide.
THIS U.S. ROBOTICS PRODUCT MAY INCLUDE
OR BE BUNDLED WITH THIRD-PARTY
SOFTWARE, THE USE OF WHICH IS GOVERNED
BY A SEPARATE END-USER LICENSE AGREE-
MENT. THIS U.S. ROBOTICS WARRANTY DOES
NOT APPLY TO SUCH THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE.
FOR THE APPLICABLE WARRANTY, PLEASE
REFER TO THE END-USER LICENSE AGREE-
MENT GOVERNING THE USE OF

OBTAINING WARRANTY SERVICE: Customer
must contact a U.S. Robotics Corporate
Service Center or an Authorized U.S.
Robotics Service Center within the
applicable warranty period to obtain
warranty service authorization. Dated proof
of purchase from U.S. Robotics or its
authorized reseller may be required.

Products returned to U.S. Robotics’
Corporate Service Center must be
pre-authorized by U.S. Robotics with a
Service Repair Order (SRO) number marked
on the outside of the package, and sent
prepaid and packaged appropriately for
safe shipment, and it is recommended that
they be insured or sent by a method that
provides for tracking of the package. The
repaired or replaced item will be shipped to
Customer, at U.S. Robotics’ expense, not
later than thirty (30) days after U.S.
Robotics receives the defective product.
