1. About This Document
1.1 Version Information
This document contains the information necessary to use the end-user software applications
of the Vaisala AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS). The manual is mainly
intended for air trac controllers, observers, and forecasters at the airport.

2. Product Overview
2.1 System Introduction
Vaisala AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS) is a ground-based low-level
windshear alert system. It provides visual and audio alerts on calculated windshear and
microburst conditions for air trac controllers and other airport personnel.
The system measures, processes, displays, stores, and distributes meteorological
information. It consists of sensors located along the runway, one or two central data unit
computers (CDUs), and one or several workstations.
The sensors are located along the runways at specific measurement sites and communicate
with the central data units (CDUs), which distribute the data to the workstations. The system
can be single-CDU or duplicated, that is, it can include one or two CDUs. The CDU validates
the measurement data, calculates the values based on the data, and distributes the weather
data and alarms to user workstations.
Vaisala AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS) consists of wind speed and
wind direction sensors located around the runway area perimeter. The CDU processes the
horizontal wind speed and direction data using the LLWAS III algorithm, developed by NCAR
for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Windshear and microburst alerts are
provided when the data generated by the system exceeds the airport-specific threshold
values for possible windshear conditions.
In user workstations, users can view weather data, trends, and alerts with the WeatherView
application. Historical values can be viewed in the ASCII Log View application. The
Diagnostics application is for monitoring and handling system error situations.

2.2 AviMet Product Platform
Vaisala AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS) is part of the AviMet
technology platform. Other major systems based on the platform are:
• Vaisala AviMetâAutomated Weather Observing System (AWOS)
• Vaisala AviMetâRunway Visual Range System (RVR)
The LLWAS system can be an independent system or fully integrated into the AviMetâ
AWOS system. The instructions in this manual generally cover both versions, but if using the
integrated version, note the dierences specified in the manual.
The systems can be one of the following types:
• A single-CDU system with workstations
• A single-CDU system without workstations
• A duplicated system with two CDUs with workstations
• A duplicated system with two CDUs without workstations
In a duplicated system both central data units process the same data. If one of the CDUs
fails, the other CDU continues working transparently to users and without any disruption to
system performance. A CDU may be used as an end-user workstation, too.

2.3 System Configuration
Vaisala AviMet systems are always configured individually for each airport to meet the local
requirements. During system delivery, Vaisala personnel will define the system parameters
and the layout of some application windows. This is typical especially with end-user
applications. For instance, the content of the weather data screens in the WeatherView
application can be configured according to user preferences.
System configuration is only allowed by authorized Vaisala personnel.CAUTION!
This manual provides a description of the end-user applications and functions of the system.
Your system might not include all the applications that are available in AviMet systems. Thus,
your system might dier slightly from what is presented in this manual.

2.4 Use of Anti-Virus Software
To ensure proper functioning of the AviMet software, always consult
Vaisala about using any anti-virus software. When AviMet system is in operational use,
software anti-virus functionalities, especially automatic updates and blocking, cannot
be used.
WARNING!
AviMet software has been designed to be run on closed and secured networks.
Although typically the AviMet software runs on computers that have anti-virus software
running, it is known that anti-virus software can have functions that significantly consume
computer resources. This may aect the AviMet software performance and some of the anti-
virus software functionalities cannot be used when AviMet system is in operational use. Also
functions that block vital AviMet software functionalities cannot be used.
Especially if anti-virus software updates itself after AviMet system installation, no guarantee
of the AviMet software functionality and performance can be given.
2.5 End-user Software Applications
The AviMet software consists of two sets of applications: end-user applications and system
maintenance applications, which are the tools needed for system troubleshooting.
The following sections include brief descriptions of what each end-user application is used
for.
The AviMet LLWAS software focuses on the following aspects of airport weather
observation:
• Displaying wind data (WeatherView and Graphical Windshear Display)
• Displaying windshear and microburst alerts (WeatherView and Graphical Windshear
Display)
• Viewing past weather data (ASCII Log View)
• Ensuring the validity of data by monitoring the operation of the system (Diagnostics)

in this manual.
2.5.1 Viewing Current Data
WeatherView
The WeatherView application displays windshear and microburst alerts and current
meteorological data in numerical and graphical format. It can also display the status of the
data. Optionally, the WeatherView application can include the audiovisual alarm function.
Graphical Windshear Display
The WeatherView application typically also contains the Graphical Windshear Display which
displays wind data and windshear alerts in graphical format on the airport image.

2.5.2 Viewing Past Data
ASCII Log View
The ASCII Log View application is used for viewing history files that contain stored
meteorological data and events.
2.5.3 Monitoring System Operation
Diagnostics
The Diagnostics application is typically a tool for maintenance personnel for monitoring the
overall AviMet system operation. Depending on system configuration, also observers can use
it for viewing relevant system events.
2.6 System Maintenance Software
Applications
The system maintenance software applications are used for performing daily system
monitoring tasks and for troubleshooting tasks that are needed less frequently. These
applications are tools for maintenance and administrator level users.

Diagnostics
The Diagnostics application is the main tool for system maintenance personnel. The
Diagnostics application is used for monitoring the status of the CDU(s), internal components
(ROA processes/objects), workstation applications, sensors, and other devices in the
system, and for viewing system events.
Depending on system configuration, other AviMet maintenance applications, such as ASCII
Log View and IO Terminal, can be accessed directly through Diagnostics.
IO Terminal
The IO Terminal application is used for connecting to sensors and field devices through a
communication port. When there is an open terminal connection to the device, you can
monitor the messages it sends and send commands to check and modify the device status.
Sensor Selector (Optional)
With Sensor Selector you can disable a faulty sensor or a sensor that is being maintained.
Data from the disabled sensor will not be published for use in other system processes.
Playback Feature (Optional)
Playback is a feature that allows the user to replay data from a specific period of time in the
past as it was displayed on the screen. The feature can be integrated with an AviMet
application, typically with a WeatherView screen.

2.7 User Profiles
The Vaisala AviMet systems typically include workstations for using the AviMet software. The
number of dierent workstations in the system depends on the configuration of the system.
Vaisala configures the user profiles for the system. The applications available for each user
profile depends on the configuration of the system. To access the applications, the user must
log in to the workstation with the appropriate user profile.

2.8 LLWAS Algorithm
In the AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS) the windshear conditions are
calculated using the latest version of the LLWAS phase III windshear algorithm developed by
National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) for the U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA). The field sensors create a set of geometrically reasonable
anemometer triples (triangles) and pairs (edges). The windshear algorithm is implemented
in C++ language.

Windshear and microburst conditions exist when the data generated by the system exceeds
the airport-specific threshold values for possible windshear conditions. The data is based on
horizontal wind speed and wind direction measurements. Windshear and microburst alerts
are generated when the calculated windshear conditions exist.
The following paragraphs briefly describe the operation of the formulas used to calculate
and present windshear conditions:
Edge divergence is calculated by making the dot product of the edge direction vector and
the velocity dierential between the endpoints of the edge. Triangle divergence is
calculated by computing the derivative, in the x and y directions, of the linear interpolation
functions for the wind components, based on the wind at the vertices of the triangle.
These values are compared to airport-specific thresholds to determine if persistent
windshear conditions exist. If this is the case, the headwind loss estimate and the location of
the first encounter is calculated and a microburst alert is generated. Typically, the limit for a
microburst alert is a 30‑knot loss. If headwind loss or gain is less than the microburst limit
(typically 30 knots), but more than windshear limit (typically 15 knots), a windshear alert is
issued.
In cases where there are multiple windshear condition situations, the cases are arbitrated
and only the most hazardous alert for that runway is issued. The arbitration order is:
1. Microburst
2. Windshear with large loss
3. Windshear with large gain
4. Windshear with small loss
5. Windshear with small gain
In these cases the location reported is the location of the first encounter with any of these
phenomena.
2.9 Regulatory Compliances
The AviMet systems are designed according to the recommendations of international air
trac authorities as presented in the following sources.
The algorithm used for calculations in the Vaisala AviMetâLow-Level Windshear Alert
System (LLWAS) is the latest version of the phase III windshear algorithm developed for the
U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by UCAR:
• United States Patent number 5,221,924: Wind shear alert system, W. Wilson, UCAR, CO
• United States Patent number 5,208,587: Low level wind-shear alert system, L. Cornman,
UCAR, CO
• FAA LLWAS-III Specification
The wind sensors of the LLWAS system are positioned and implemented in accordance with
the M.I.T., Lincoln Laboratories and the National Center for Atmospheric Research system
design guidelines specified in:
•Siting Guidelines for Low Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS) Remote Facilities. FAA

3. Getting Started
3.1 Logging In
Log in to your computer with your Windows user name and password. The AviMet system
starts and applies your profile automatically, giving you all the AviMet application rights that

If you receive error messages when trying to log in, contact system maintenance personnel.
3.2 Starting and Exiting Applications
Depending on your user profile and the system configuration, some applications, for
example, WeatherView, start automatically when you log into an AviMet workstation. These
applications also need to be open at all times.
If the AviMet applications do not start, the software license may not be available or
activated. Contact your system maintenance personnel.
To view meteorological data and alarms, keep the WeatherView application
and the Notifications pane open at all times.
CAUTION!
To start the applications that do not start automatically, click the corresponding icon on the
desktop, or for example, in the WeatherView application. Depending on system
configuration other options may be available.
3.3 User Interface
For introduction to the user interface of the applications, refer to the corresponding
chapters in this manual.
3.3.1 AviMet Application Icons
The icons available in your system and workstation may dier from the one listed below
because AviMet applications are configured for each user profile and system separately.

If the icons for the applications you need are not visible when you log in to the workstation,
you are perhaps trying to log in with a username that does not have the appropriate user
profile.
Some software functionalities are part of other applications and their location depends on
the system configuration. For example, the Sensor Control functionality may be part of
WeatherView application, or another application, as configured.
The following table shows the typical icons used for AviMet applications.

4. WeatherView
4.1 Introduction to WeatherView
The WeatherView application displays windshear and microburst alerts in text format.
Windshear and microburst alerts are warnings generated by the system when the calculated
windshear and microburst conditions exist.
WeatherView also indicates wind direction and wind speed at each runway for arrival,
centerfield, and departure, the estimated location of the first encounter with the windshear
conditions, the estimated headwind gain or loss, and the status of the windshear calculation.
WeatherView typically also contains the Graphical Windshear Display, indicating the
windshear alerts in graphical format on the airport image.
Optionally, WeatherView can also include weather data fields for other weather parameters,
or a notification pane containing information about weather reports.

4.2 WeatherView User Interface
The WeatherView user interface consists of dierent data elements, arranged and displayed
depending on system configuration. Typical data elements include the LLWAS screen, wind
roses, identification data, graphical windshear display, and optionally, fields for other
weather data.
There are standard display options available for dierent user profiles. In addition, optional
features may be selected and customized displays designed. The following sections describe
the typical elements and options, including options available only when the LLWAS system
is integrated with an AWOS system.
WeatherView displays are individually configured for each system. Thus, the display
elements and functionalities presented in this chapter may dier from the ones in your
system. Always refer to your system-specific documentation or training material to get the
most accurate information corresponding to your system.
If the LLWAS system is integrated with AviMet AWOS system, the LLWAS screen is part of
the WeatherView application in AviMet AWOS.
