During recording and pla back the recorder ke s have the standard
recorder ke functions.
If no recording or pla back is taking place these ke s have a different
function. The and ke s can be used to scroll through a selection
of recordings, numbers in a list or through a settings menu. The ke
will alwa s exit the current operation. When editing text the function
as explained in the table of the alpha-numerical functions below.
In normal operating mode, when no recording is taking place, pressing
the ke will temporaril brighten the LCD background lightening.

1. Introduction
The Call Recorder Single Digital is a digital audio recorder for two-wire
(Up0) or four-wire (S0) telephon .

The Call Recorder Single Digital has an SD Card interface and a network
interface. The SD Card interface ma be activated ‘off factor ’, if not, it
is possible to activate it an time, using the activation card, which is part
of the SD option. The SD option also contains the actual SD card and the
Quick SD access software.
This manual is written for the Call Recorder Single Digital with the SD
card option activated. If ou purchased a Single Digital without SD card
option, the ‘Cop to SD’ button will not work and the option SD-CARD
will not be visible in the displa .
1.1 Basic Functions
The Call Recorder Single Digital is designed for continuous unattended
recording. All recordings are stored digitall on the internal Compact
Flash Card (Solid-State Drive). The large storage capacit of the Compact
Flash Card ensures the abilit of long term unattended recording.
Recordings are randoml accessible. The capacit of a (16GB) Compact
Flash Card is in recording time at least 500 hours uncompressed and
2500 hours with compression, and therefore it takes a long time before
existing recordings are wiped out b new recordings. When the drive is
getting full, the oldest recordings will be overwritten b the newest
(first in first out archive).
The available space on the drive is shown in the Information menu.
Stored recordings can also be accessed on PC’s via the LAN using the
optional Call Recorder Access S stem software. Using the LAN and this
software is the best wa to backup all our recordings.
If ou have a Call Recorder Single Digital with an activated SD interface,
ou can cop recordings from the internal drive to a removable SD card.
Cop ing recordings to SD card is ment to be used in the case one or
more important recordings must be transferred in a fast and eas wa . It
is possible to cop single recordings or cop a selection of recordings.
The Single Digital allows the user to listen to ongoing calls through the
internal speaker; this is called the Monitor function. The volume of the
internal speaker can be adjusted. The Single Digital also allows for the
connection of a headset. The headset can be used to monitor ongoing
calls and to listen to stored recordings.

1.2 Speech Compression
The Single Digital compresses recordings according to the GSM 6.10
format. GSM 6.10 compression has a good balance between audio
qualit and recording size and can be reproduced on most PC’s with
Microsoft Windows versions. Compressed recordings take up 1/5 of the
size of uncompressed recordings. Therefore the compression has a
profound effect on the storage capacit of the recorder in terms of
recording time.
1.3 Network
The Call Recorder Single Digital features an Ethernet interface. The
Single Digital can be connected to a PC or computer network through
the Ethernet interface. With its own IP address The Single Digital acts as
an FTP-server from which recordings can be downloaded using an FTP
client. The Call Recorder Access S stem software can be used to connect
to the Call Recorder Single Digital over the network to retrieve
recordings and archive them on the PC. The Call Recorder Access S stem
software has extensive archiving capabilities including the creation of
special archives suited for backup on CD.
The Single Digital can email its status in case of a malfunction. To do so,
the e-mail address and SMTP server address must be entered in the
Network Settings menu.
Another application of the Ethernet connection is Real Time Remote Call
monitoring over the network. The optional RTR Call Monitor software
can be used to monitor the connected telephone line over the network
and provides live call listening while the call is in progress.
1.4 Search recordings
The Call Recorder Single Digital has its own menu driven search function
to find and pla specific recordings. Recordings can be searched for
according to date or phone number. The Single Digital has an internal
speaker for pla back of internall stored recordings.
1.5 Encr ption
All recordings can be encr pted. The Call Recorder Single Digital uses the
Cr ptoCard option for this feature. Pla back of encr pted recordings is
not possible without the Cr ptoCard the recording was made with.
Pla back of encr pted recordings on a PC is possible onl with the

optional Cr ptoCard reader in conjunction with the original or a
matching Cr ptoCard.
1.6 Digital telephone connection
The Call Recorder Single Digital can be connected to two t pes of digital
telephon , ISDN (S0 or S/T interface) or two-wire digital telephon (Up0
interface). In both situations the are connected in “pass through mode”
meaning that the recorder is installed between the network and the
telephone s stem and all digital channels pass through the recorder.
Pass Through mode is also occasionall called “In-Line mode”.
Connecting the recorder in this wa has the advantage that it is assured
an ongoing call is recorded; the line is passing the recorder and if that
fails the phone won’t work.

Note: The ISDN connectors (connectors 3 and 4 of page 4) are speciall
adapted for this purpose. The can not onl take RJ-45 ISDN connectors,
but can also accept the RJ-11 connectors used in t pical two-wire digital
telephon s stems.
1.7 Privac related functions
In some situations Call Recording is perceived as an intrusion of the
privac . The Call Recorder Single Digital has several functions that allow
the user to protect the privac of an one involved.
In most applications the recorder is set up to record all calls
automaticall . The Single Digital can however be used to record specific
numbers onl or can be set to exclude certain numbers from recording.
For this feature the recorder has a numberlist that can be used as
“blacklist” or as “whitelist”. See Chapter 8 for more details.
The Single Digital can be used as a securit recorder. For this purpose the
recorder has a feature where the number of da ’s can be set for the
recorder to keep the recordings (in the settings menu this function is
called Auto Delete). In case of an emergenc , recordings can be accessed
while dail recordings are removed after the set number of da s. This is
used when for matters of privac it is not desirable to keep recordings of
the people involved for a long period. See § 4 for details.
The Cr ptoCard option can be ver effective to protect privac . When
the Single Digital is set up to record with the Cr ptoCard the privac of
the people involved can be guaranteed because the recordings can onl
be pla ed with a card matching the card the recording was made with
and the password that belongs to it. Without the Cr ptoCards the
recordings are not accessible. There are Cr ptoCards that can onl be

used to encode and not to decode recordings, so even when the
recorder is stolen the privac of its users remains protected.

2.2 Connecting the Power suppl
The Call Recorder Single Digital is powered through an AC power
adapter. It does not have an On/Off switch; The Single Digital is turned
on or off b connecting or disconnecting the power suppl .

2.3 Connecting the digital lines
As explained in the introduction, the Call Recorder Single Digital works
in pass through mode where it is processing the complete data stream.
The figure below is an example of a possible setup of the recorder.
2.3.1 Connecting to a single telephone
Most often the Single Digital will be used to record conversations of just
one single telephone, and be placed on the same desktop as the
telephone. This must be a telephone that operates on a digital line.
It doesn't matter if the telephone is using a four-wire (S0) protocol or a
two-wire digital telephon (Up0) protocol, in both cases the Single
Digital is connected in the same wa . The line coming from our PBX is
plugged into the PBX connector (4 of page 4), and the Phone connector
(3 of page 4) is connected to our digital telephone.
Connectors 3 and 4 accept both S0 (RJ-45) and Up0 (RJ-11) connectors.
Because the electrical interface is different the Single Digital must first
be configured for the correct interface setting, see § 0. If ou connect
the wires the wrong wa the Single Digital will periodicall emit beeps
displa ing the message “Line disconnected!”.
If the Single Digital is turned off, the telephone is turned off as well.
When using a two-wire digital Up0 or the four-wire S0 s stem, several
protocols could be in use. If ou configure the wrong protocol our
telephone might still work but the conversations might not be recorded.

2.3.2 Connecting to a Basic Rate ISDN line
Where the recorder is used as an ISDN recorder and placed in between
the ISDN line (NT) and and the ISDN PBX (TE), it is recording all incoming
and outgoing traffic. The line coming from the ISDN network provider is
plugged into the PBX connector (4 of page 4), and the ISDN PBX or
telephone is connected to the Phone connector (3 of page 4).
Normall an ISDN line uses RJ-45 connectors.
Also note that in all operating modes the line is terminated with 100
Ohm resistors, except for the TE input in ISDN (S0) mode. The TE input is
designed for a short, (less than 50 meters) point to point connection,
and therefore is not terminated. If ou want to use a longer cable, or
point to multipoint connection, ou ma want to add our own
terminating resistors, between pins 4 and 5, and 3 and 6 of the ISDN
connector. In Up0 mode all connections are terminated.
The figure below is an example of a possible setup of the Call Recorder
Single Digital on a Basic Rate ISDN line.
Note that although a PABX is connected, it is still connected to the
“phone” ISDN output connector, while the “PBX” input connector is
connected to the ISDN NT1 adapter (with a short cable).

3 Configuration and operation
After ou have connected the hardware it is time to configure and use
the Call Recorder Single Digital. This chapter explains ou how the user
interface works. In the following chapters we guide ou with the
configuration. You must:
• Go through the recorder settings and make changes if required
• Go through the LAN settings so the recorder will fit in with our
network
• (Optional) Install the Call Recorder Access S stem software on
our PC and test the network connection to the recorder
3.1 Operation basics
The Call Recorder Single Digital has a common menu driven user
interface. Most functions and operations are initiated b pressing a
function ke followed b a sequence of menu ke s of which the function
is determined b the text in the displa . The use of function ke s and
menu ke s is as follows:

The most frequentl used functions of the Single Digital have been
grouped in the function ke s. Throughout the entire manual s mbols
representing the function ke s are used to indicate the function ke
corresponding to the described function.

After pressing a function ke the available functions are assigned to the
four menu ke s. The operation of the menu ke s is determined b the
text in the displa right above the corresponding ke . Throughout the
entire manual figures representing the displa with or without the
menu ke s are used to show the required action corresponding to the
described feature.
Example:
In this example we will open the recorder settings menu. Press the
“Settings function ke ”, to open the Recorder setting menu.
The displa will change, and text will appear on the displa above four
