1Introduction
1.1 The GW2040 Series router
Virtual Access GW2040 Series routers are versatile, rugged and compact 3G wireless
routers suitable for a variety of business and industrial applications. The routers have
dual SIMs for 3G network redundancy.
You can configure the GW2040 Series routers to receive SMS messages to improve
ongoing management and support.
1.2 Document scope
This document describes:
SIM features and functionality on the GW2040;
how to configure and manage single and dual SIM features;
how to receive SMS messages; and
how to diagnose SIM issues

This document is for engineers who need to configure and manage a GW2040 router.

2SIM failover overview
The GW2040 router can be configured to failover to an alternate SIM if the main SIM fails
to register. When this feature is enabled the GW2040 router will monitor the network
registration status of the 3G data card on start up. There are two steps to setting up a
successful data call: registration to a network and establishing a call.
If the GW2040 router fails to register to a network after a configured time, it will switch
to the secondary SIM.
When there is a successful registration, the 3G data card will attempt to establish a call.
If the call fails, after a configurable number of call attempts it will switch to the
secondary SIM.
If the secondary SIM registers correctly and the data call using this SIM is successful, the
GW2040 router can be configured to either continue with this SIM, or to switch back to
the main SIM after a specified period of time. If either the registration or the data call
using the secondary SIM is unsuccessful, the router will switch back to the main SIM
again and the process will be repeated.
2.1 Configuring dual SIM functionality
To configure dual SIM functionality, on the Start page, click Advanced.
In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
In the Expert View menu, select interfaces -> modem-0 -> gsm. The Modem Interface
GSM page appears.
Click Advanced to view advanced options.

Enter the parameters listed in Table 1 and then click Update. You can leave saving your
configurations until you have made all the configuration changes you need to.

2.2 Setting a secondary SIM username and password
To set the secondary SIM username and password, in the Expert View menu, select
Advanced > interfaces > ppp-1 > ppp > authentication > name and password
Click Advanced and enter in the secondary username, password and password
confirmation.

You can manage dual SIM operation using the 3G Info applet or the command line. To
view 3G information, on the Start page, click Status.

In the Status menu, click 3G info. The 3G Info applet appears.

From this applet, you can change the active SIM and reset the modem.

3.1 Changing an active SIM
To change the active SIM to the alternative SIM, click Change Active SIM. The SIM
Switch Configuration pop-up window appears.

Select the alternative SIM and click Update.
The 3G Info applet now shows the alternative SIM.

The command line parameter to change the active SIM is:
set modem interface gsm active sim modem-0 sim1|sim2
3.2 Reset modem
The reset modem button resets the 3G module on the GW2040. You may need to do this
to clear an unstable connection. You can monitor this reset through the Trace Analyzer.
To view the Trace Analyzer, in the Expert View menu, select Advanced > diagnostics >
trace analyzer) and select tracing of MODEM events, or use the command line.
To monitor on the command line, set
++modem (note: to stop tracing type –sign)
The command line parameter to reset the modem is:

The GW2040 has a reset feature that you can use when a single SIM is deployed. This
feature reboots the GW2040 3G module in the event that certain failure criterion have
been reached.
To access the reset parameters, in the Expert View menu, click interfaces - > modem-
0 - > gsm. The Modem Interface page appears.
Click Advanced to view the advanced options and automatic reset parameters.

Note: the automatic reset feature and SIM switch are exclusive of each other. Do not
enable them at the same time.
