Photo Imager 2
Components
The Photo Imager is a basic stand-alone gel documentation system, no computer required. The system is
designed to fit over a transilluminator. The system combines the equipment below. Refer to the Inventory
List/Photo for components.

Hood Enclosure
The Photo Imager’s hood enclosure provides a darkroom environment to reduce ambient and reflective light
when taking pictures. Two handles allow the hood to be easily moved.
Camera
The 10.0 megapixel digital color camera includes a built-in optical zoom lens.

Ethidium Bromide Filter
The EtBr orange-colored UV blocking band pass filter is installed inside the hood at the factory. The filter is
used to absorb UV and IR radiation from the transilluminator and to enhance the bands generated by
Ethidium Bromide stained gels. The filter can be removed when imaging non-fluorescent media (protein
gels, colony plates, etc.) in order to produce brighter images. Additional filters are available, such as SYBR
green.
Transilluminator
An ultraviolet transilluminator may be shipped with the system. The transilluminator includes an ultraviolet
blocking cover; however, the cover should be removed when the transilluminator is used with the system.
View Port
The View Port window is comprised of a UV blocking material to provide safe viewing for users. Opening
the View Port window allows users to view their actual gel without exposure to UV and without having to turn
off the UV transilluminator.
Color Printer
Print 4x6” lab quality color prints on the compact color printer supplied with the system. A supply of 108
sheets is included with the printer.
Combination Lock
A three-digit combination lock is supplied for securing the camera to the hood. The combination can be reset
as required. The cable is two feet long allowing flexibility when moving equipment.

System Set-Up
The Photo Imager is easy to set up. No tools are required.

CAUTION: Do not install the system in places with high moisture, dust or high temperature. Do not use any
oil or petroleum based cleaner for the cabinet. Use only mild soap or detergent solution for cleaning. Ensure
that the system is turned OFF during cleaning. Keep the equipment away from motors or other large
magnetic equipment apparatus.
Place the Hood on top of the Transilluminator
The hood enclosure is used with a transilluminator. Additional instructions for the transilluminator are
supplied in a separate manual.
CAUTION: All transilluminators are powerful sources of UV radiation that will cause damage to unprotected
eyes and skin. Before operating any unit, be sure all personnel in the area are properly protected. UV
Blocking Eyewear should be worn as well. Refer to Replacement Parts/Accessories for UV Blocking
Eyewear.
1. Remove the UV blocking clear cover from the
transilluminator if it has previously been
assembled. The UV blocking cover is
recommended for use when operating the
transilluminator out of the hood.
2. Connect the power cord to the back of the
transilluminator and to a power source. The
transilluminator switch is on the front of the
unit.
3. Place the Photo Imager’s hood on top of the
transilluminator.

Ethidium Bromide Filter Installation
The Ethidium Bromide filter is installed inside the hood enclosure at the UVP factory. To replace the filter,
turn the hood upside down, loosen screws and slide the filter into the filter tray. Retighten screws and place
the hood upright.

Camera Installation
Locate the camera’s power input at the side of the camera. Plug the camera’s power supply into the camera
and into the wall outlet or surge protector.
Plug the camera USB cable into the camera and the printer. This cable includes a controller button for
switching the camera to printer connection on or off.
To remove the camera from the hood, using the
Allen wrench provided, unscrew the black screw on
the front of the bracket. Use a Phillips head
screwdriver to remove the three screws from the
top of the bracket. Remove the bracket
components for access to the camera.

Printer Installation
1. Install the ink cartridge: Open the panel on the right side of the printer. Insert the ink cassette into the
printer until it clicks firmly into place. Close the cover.
2. Insert the paper cassette: Open the panel on the front of the printer. Slide off the lid on the paper
cassette. Place paper in the cassette with the shiny side up. Try not to touch the shiny side of the paper.
Close the lid. A portion of the paper should be seen through the opening. Insert the cassette into the
slot on the printer.
3. Attach the power cord to the printer and plug into a wall outlet or surge protector.
4. Attach the camera interface cable under the terminal cover on the side of the camera to the USB port
on the left side of the printer.
Connect the Combination Lock
Attach the cable lock through the key ring on the camera and through the white handle on the hood.
System Operation
Ensure Correct Camera Settings
The following camera settings are preset at the factory before the system is shipped. Check to ensure the
camera settings are preset correctly.
Press Menu (8) to check the settings.
1. AF Frame should be set to Face AiAF
2. Digital Zoom should be set to Off
3. AF-Point Zoom should be set to Off
4. AF-assist Beam should be set to Off
5. Flash Settings should be set to Off
Press the Menu (8) to complete setup
To Capture an Image
1. Turn off the transilluminator.
2. Remove the hood from the top of the
transilluminator.
3. Place the sample to be imaged in the center of
the filter glass.
4. Place the hood on top of the transilluminator.
5. Turn the transilluminator ON.
6. Press the Power ON/OFF Button to turn the
camera on.
NOTE: Prior to taking a picture, ensure that the
Controller Button switch is pressed to O (off).
7. Ensure that the flash is deactivated prior to
taking pictures with the Photo Imager. Press
the flash indicator on the right of the Selector
Button. Use the Selector Button to advance
the options left or right until the screen
indicator shows a symbol with the flash,
crossbar and circle.

8. Press the Mode Button then use the Selector
Button to advance to the left or right and
select the P option. Press the Function Set
Button to set the Poption.
9. Use the Zoom Button to zoom in and out to
obtain the appropriate image size.
10. Press the Shutter Button halfway to focus.
When the camera focuses it will beep twice.
One or more Green AF frames will appear
where the subject is in focus.
11. Capture the image by pressing the Shutter
Button fully.
12. If the image is too dark, use the Selector
Button to set the ISO value to a higher
number. Press the Function Set Button to
set the higher value. Retake the picture.
To Print an Image
1. Turn ON the printer. Note: Printer shown here may look
different than shown here.
2. Push the Controller Button switch to I (on).
3. Make sure the printer is connected to the camera.
4. Ensure that the camera is on. Press the Selector
Button to advance the images to the left or right and
find the image to print. Press the Function Set Button.
5. Press the Selector Button to advance to the Print
option then press the Function Set Button. Printing
will start.
For additional printer instructions, refer to the separate
printer manual.
NOTE: Always change the switch mode back to camera
prior to taking the next picture. USB cable supplied with the
camera must be connected to the side USB port on the
printer.
NOTE: To save images to a computer or for additional camera and printer instructions, refer to the camera
user’s guide for further information.
To Operate the Optional LCD Screen
Once the LCD screen is connected to the camera, push the far right button on the LCD panel to operate the
screen.

Replacement Parts/Accessories

Replacement paper/ink is available for the printer.
For transilluminator replacement parts, refer to the separate manual for the transilluminator included with
shipment.
Accessories (optional) are available for use with the Photo Imager.
Doc-It®Analysis Software can be loaded on your computer for image enhancement, analysis, reporting and
documentation.
Converter Plates convert the UV to either white light (UV to White Light Plate) for Coomassie blue or silver
stained gels or 460-470nm (Visi-Blue Converter Plate) for SYBR green stained gels. Order the SYBR green
filter when using the Visi-Blue Converter Plate.

Warranty
UVP's quality instruments are guaranteed to be free of defects in materials, workmanship, and manufacture
for one (1) year from date of purchase. Transilluminators are similarly warranted for two (2) years from the
date of purchase. Consumable and disposable products, including, but not limited to lamps or light tubes,
filters, or rechargeable batteries are guaranteed to be free from defects in manufacture and materials for
ninety (90) days from date of purchase. If equipment failure or malfunction occurs during the warranty
period, UVP shall examine the inoperative equipment and have the option of repairing or replacing any
part(s) which, in the sole and absolute discretion of UVP, were originally defective or became so under
conditions of normal usage and service. No warranty shall apply to any instrument, or part thereof, that has
been subject to accident, negligence, alteration, abuse or misuse by the end user. Moreover, UVP makes no
warranties whatsoever with respect to parts not supplied by UVP or that have been installed, used and/or
serviced other than in strict compliance with the instructions appearing in this installation and instruction
manual. In no event shall UVP be responsible to the end-user for any incidental or consequential damages,
whether foreseeable or not, including but not limited to property damage, inability to use equipment, loss of
business, loss of profits, or inconvenience arising out of or connected with the use of instruments produced
by UVP. Nor is UVP liable or responsible for any personal injuries occurring as a result of the use, misuse,
installation and/or servicing of equipment. Representations and warranties made by any person, including
dealers and representatives of UVP which are inconsistent or in conflict with the terms of this warranty
(including but not limited to the limitations of the liability of UVP as set forth above), shall not be binding
upon UVP unless reduced to writing and approved by an expressly authorized representative of UVP. THIS
WARRANTY IS EXPRESSED IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED,
INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
