1.2 Safety and Health Hazard Notes
DANGER
Danger of explosion due to static electricity and other eects
▶Never operate the device in explosive areas!
WARNING
Thunderstorms can cause overvoltages in the AC power.
Overvoltages can lead to malfunctions and dangerous voltages between
housing and other components.
▶Do not use equipment connected to AC power during thunder‐
storms!
WARNING
In extreme positions, stands with horizontal extension arms can fall
over.
Danger of destruction!
▶Avoid such extreme positions! Use the stand only on a safe and steady
ground!
WARNING
Large measuring objects can fall over.
This can lead to serious bodily harm or death.
▶Make sure that you comply with the respective valid accident preven‐
tion regulations!

WARNING
Epileptic seizures or loss of awareness caused by certain light patterns
or flashing lights
A very small portion of the population (approx. 1 person out of 4000) have
a condition which may cause them to experience epileptic seizures or have
momentary loss of consciousness when viewing certain kinds of flashing
lights and patterns or when playing video games. Certain conditions may
induce previously undetected epileptic symptoms even in persons who
have no history of prior seizures or epilepsy. The measurements with struc‐
tured light show a significantly lower contrast. Even though it cannot be
guaranteed to a 100% that an epileptic seizure will not occur, GOM esti‐
mates the risk to be low. Until now, we do not know of a single case in
connection with GOM sensors.
▶If you or anyone in your family has experienced symptoms linked to
an epileptic condition (e.g. a seizure or loss of awareness) due to
flashlights, do not look directly on certain light patterns or flashing
lights of the sensor!
▶If you experience any symptoms, switch o the sensor or leave the
room!
WARNING
Repair work
Repair work can cause serious bodily harm and considerable material
damage.
▶Only authorized and qualified service personnel is allowed to perform
repair work!
▶Always comply with the accident prevention regulations!
CAUTION
Artificial optical radiation, EN62471 - risk group 2
Looking directly into the light source can be harmful for your eyes.
▶When you operate the device, do not look into the light source or into
the reflected light for a longer time!
CAUTION
The local supply voltage must be within the operating voltage range of
the device!
An incorrect operating voltage can cause malfunctions or the risk of fire.
▶Operate the equipment only with the operating voltages printed on
the housing!
CAUTION
Damaged cables can cause short circuits and the risk of fire.
Replace damaged cables.

Company-specific firewall settings
Company-specific firewall settings of the Ethernet data connections can
cause system failures.
▶Never change the factory-set firewall for the Ethernet cards for the
cameras or the controller!
NOTICE
Temperature variations can cause condensation.
The ambient temperature must be between +5 °C and +40 °C.
▶Do not expose the device to rapid temperature variations because
such variations can cause condensation!
▶Always operate the device within the given temperature range!
NOTICE
When the housing is open, there is risk of electric shock.
Only with the housing closed, the device is ready for operation.
▶Only open the housing when no voltage is supplied!
NOTICE
Strange objects in the device can jeopardize the operational safety.
Electric shocks and malfunctions can occur.
▶Do not stick any strange objects into the housing!

Overtemperature causes malfunctions.

2 Product Description
The GOM Scan 1 sensor (Fig. 1) is designed for full-field 3D scanning. GOM
Scan 1 systems are available with a wide range of accessories.

4 Information About the Sensor
Each configured GOM Scan 1 sensor comprises a defined 3D area in scan
direction within which a measuring object can be scanned.
Such a 3D area is referred to in the following as a “measuring volume”
(MV).
The measuring volume defines the distance of the sensor to the measur‐
ing object.

Depending on the measuring task, dierent measuring volumes are
required.
Each GOM Scan 1 sensor only has one integrated measuring volume
which cannot be changed.
Each individual measuring volume requires a separate GOM Scan 1 sensor.

You get to the web interface in the GOM Inspect software via Help ►Sys‐
tem Analysis ►Sensor ►Sensor Status.

puter. The GOM Inspect software is started. The sensor is not yet initialized

8 Calibrate the Sensor
A calibration is a measuring process in which a calibration object is meas‐
ured. Thus, the measuring system is adjusted and its dimensional consis‐
tency is ensured. During this process, the software determines geometrical
parameters, for example position and orientation of each camera, based
on the recorded camera images. Furthermore, the software determines
the image characteristics of the camera lenses and of the camera chip.
These settings are the computation basis of the software. From the points
of the calibration object in the 2D camera image, the software computes
the 3D coordinates of the points.
The software then calculates the 3D coordinates back again into the 2D
camera images. For the position of the reference points, this results in the
reference point deviation (intersection error).
Generally, each measuring volume (MV) has its own calibration object. The
table in section 4.1 informs you about which calibration object is required
for your measuring volume.
For the GOM Scan 1 measuring volumes, dierent calibration objects are
available.
The corresponding holding device enables dierent tilting and tipping of
the calibration panel during the calibration procedure.

Inappropriate calibration objects can aect the measuring accuracy.
▶For calibrating, only use the calibration object which is intended for
the measuring volume!

8.1 How to Handle Calibration Objects
NOTICE
Calibration objects are very sensitive.
Treat the calibration objects with care.
▶Do not touch the surface of the calibration object!
▶After each use, duly accommodate the calibration objects!

Clean the surface of the calibration object with the enclosed microfiber
cloth from the standard tool box. Wipe the surface gently only. Never
exert any pressure.

8.2 Calibration Conditions
•When the system reports a possible decalibration.
8.3 Prerequisites
•Allow the sensor to warm up for about 20 minutes (camera and pro‐
jector switched on), so that the calibration can be performed under
operating conditions.
•Adjust the measuring distance to the calibration object. The distance
depends on the sensor used. You find the measuring distance in sec‐
tion 4.1.

At the beginning of the calibration procedure, you need to enter the tem‐
perature of the calibration object in the GOM software. To prevent the
sensitive point markers from being scratched, measure the temperature
on the rear side of the calibration object.
8.4 Calibrate Sensor with Calibration Panel CPA
This section describes the calibration using the calibration panel CPA with
the sensor on a desk stand.
The calibration panel is available in dierent sizes according to the meas‐
uring volume.

The calibration panel CPA consists of black points on a white background.
The larger points in the middle inform the GOM Inspect software about
the calibration panel type, for example, calibration panel CPA30 for meas‐
uring volume 200.
Each point was measured photogrammetrically in the factory. The system
does not only use the black points for calibration but the white spaces as
well (calibration of single cameras). Therefore, always ensure that the cali‐
bration panel is clean (see section 8.1 How to Handle Calibration Objects).
Each calibration object has its own calibration data (file extension .calobj)
and its certificate. The calibration data is stored in the GOM Scan 1 sensor.
A unique serial number provides for correct matching of calibration
object, certificate and calibration data.
All documents are included in the delivered storage medium.

8.4.1 Handling Instructions for Calibration Panel CPA
•The surface of the calibration object is very sensitive. Therefore, never
touch the surface directly with your hands.
•All calibration panels of the larger measuring volumes remain in the
case during the calibration procedure. Only remove the case cover. To
prevent any damage to the surface of the panel, remove the case
cover carefully.
•Clean the point surface with the enclosed microfiber cloth from the
standard tool box. Wipe the surface gently only. Never exert any pres‐
sure.
•The system does no longer use damaged points for calibration.
•The system ignores dirty white areas during calibration. The process
uses the clean neighboring areas.

NOTICE
You probably cannot calibrate successfully with a dirty or damaged cal‐
ibration panel.
The GOM software might not recognize dirty or damaged calibration pan‐
els.
▶Do not soil or damage particularly the area around the larger calibra‐
tion points in the middle!
NOTICE
When you use a wrong calibration object, the calibration is incorrect.
When the calibration object does not match the calibration object data in
the software, the measuring system provides inaccurate data. The soft‐
ware only checks the correct type of the calibration panel but not the
serial number.
▶If you use several sensors, check the serial number of the calibration
object!
▶Compare the serial number of the calibration object with the serial
number of the calibration object in the GOM software!
8.4.2 Prepare the Calibration
Procedure:
1. Open the calibration dialog in workspace Set Up with Cal‐
ibrate Sensor ►.
2. Enter the current measurement temperature in the dialog.
3. Confirm the prompt with OK.
The software resets the settings to the recommended calibration set‐
tings.

8.4.3 Calibration Procedure
The software guides you through the remaining calibration steps. In the
first step, make sure that the calibration object is in the center of the
measuring volume.
Enable ( ) the Automatic exposure time.
In exceptional case, option Automatic exposure time cannot work cor‐
rectly.
Then, disable this option. To set the optimum exposure time for the cam‐
era image, use the exposure time wheel.
When the red overexposed areas are just no longer visible, an optimum
exposure time is given.

The following 12 calibration steps ask you to place the calibration object
in defined positions perpendicular to the sensor.
The GOM software guides you to the correct positions in the measuring
volume.

The GOM Scan 1 sensor is not equipped with laser pointers. The red mark‐
ing in figure Fig. 9 shows the starting position for the calibration. In the
first calibration position, the calibration object is in the center of the meas‐
uring volume.

From calibration step 13, the calibration panel is only tilted and rotated in
the center of the measuring volume. The new holding device for the cali‐
bration panel facilitates the positioning due to the dierent images for the
calibration panel.
If you have not set the automatic exposure time, readjust the exposure
time for each new image.
Follow the further instructions on the GOM software until the procedure is
complete.
8.4.4 Calibration Result
At the end of the calibration procedure, the software displays the calibra‐
tion result. The green icon indicates a good calibration result. The red
icon indicates an insucient calibration result.
If the calibration result is insucient, repeat the calibration and check the
sensor settings and the correct camera lenses. Ensure that the cameras
and lenses are mounted tight.
If only the projector calibration is insucient, check if the projector lens
and the lens settings are correct and ensure that the lens is mounted tight.
