1.1 About This Manual
1.2.1 General Notes
This manual is the field service reference for troubleshooting, repair, adjustment, and calibration of
the SL 800. The manual is intended for use by field service engineers who have completed specific
service training on ZEISS slit lamps, especially an SL 800 upgrade training.
This service manual describes the full scope of activities that can be performed on site by service staff
who have completed appropriate training. More extensive activities require that the system or defect
modules be returned to ZEISS for factory repair.
The procedures described in this manual assume that the reader is familiar with the operation of the
system. A user manual with complete operating instructions is contained in the delivery package of
every system. Information presented in the user manual is not repeated in this service manual
Update revisions to this service manual will be issued as required.

1.2.2 Conventions
The following conventions apply in this manual:
Unless otherwise specified, front and back of the system are as viewed from the front (patient
side) of the system.
Unless otherwise specified, right and left of the system are as viewed from the patient side of the
system (front).
Unless otherwise specified, all tool dimensions for screws and nuts are metric values.
Please be informed that the illustrations in this service manual only represent one possible look of the
device. Labels and pictures may differ depending on the country and configuration.

1.3 SL 800 Service Strategy
The service strategy for SL 800 envisages that field service must only be performed by appropriately
trained technicians authorized by ZEISS. These activities are described in this service manual and are
dealt with in detail during the service training for this product.
Some procedures can also be performed by the end user or customer and does not require a
dedicated training. All of end user repair procedures are also described within the instruction of use.
Only original spare parts must be used.
For maintenance and repair adequate ESD protection measures must be taken.

2.1 System Check-Out Procedure
The system check described below can be used in order to verify the proper function of the SL 800
after completion of any corrective maintenance activity.

The motorized microscope changer can be turned
easily to all magnification steps without any
friction, by using the plus and minus buttons at the
operator panel.

Check the eyepieces
The eyepieces are clean and free of any scratches
or damage.
10 Check the fixation of any additional
accessory, e.g. the tonometer.
The accessories are properly fixed and functional.

Check the full height adjustment of
the instrument base.
The instrument height adjustment can be properly
moved, by the joystick, to both end positions (up
and down) without any friction or obstacles.

the x-y instrument base.
The instrument base can be properly moved, by the
joystick, to all lateral end positions without any
friction or obstacles.

Check the function of all brake
knobs.
All brake knobs can be used without any friction.

friction or obstacles. The slit image edges should be
parallel and can be fully closed. The LED
illumination can be set via the illumination setting
knob within the full range.

2.2 Preventative Maintenance Procedure
2.3.1 Perform the instrument check out
The system check described below can be used in order to verify the proper function of the SL 800 in
case of preventative maintenance activities.

2.3.2 Cleaning the rail system
Tools and aids:
Air blower with valve
Optional, a small paintbrush
Procedure
1) Remove the rail cover on each side, one
after the other by pushing them manually
parallel outwards, see Fig. 1.
2) Use an air blower or a paintbrush to clean
the rail and cogwheel.
3) Mount the rail cover after cleaning.

2.3.3 Cleaning the front objective lens
Tools and aids:
Air blower with valve
Optic cleaning mixture L or an equivalent optic cleaning liquid
Cotton swaps or alternative cleaning swaps
Note
It is recommended to start with the air blower. If using canned compressed air, do not
allow liquid propellant to strike optical surfaces, as spotting may result on the surfaces. If
liquid cleaning is necessary (e.g. fingerprints), proceed as showed in the following
procedure.
Be careful while cleaning components near painted surfaces. Use small quantities at one
time – do not “flood” the instrument. Keep the cleaning mixture clean (do not dip the
dirty wiper into the mixture bottle).
Procedure
Use the cleaning liquid and start at lens center.

2.3.4 Cleaning the mirror
Tools and aids:
Air blower with valve
Optic cleaning mixture L or an equivalent optic cleaning liquid
Cotton swaps, alternative cleaning swaps or cleaning tissues
Hand gloves
Note
It is recommended to start with the air blower. If using canned compressed air, do not

Procedure
1) Use gloved hands to slide the mirror in
upwards direction out of the mirror holder.
2) Place the mirror at a clean and flat surface
and clean it either with cleaning tissues or
cleaning swaps.
3) Re-attach the mirror with gloved hands, after
cleaning.

2.3.5 Firmware Update
Tools and aids:
Empty USB flash drive with FAT32 format
Precondition:
Check the service bulletin or the software download area for the latest software update
Download and copy the software file to the empty USB flash drive
Procedure:
1) Switch off the SL 800 at the power supply unit.
2) Remove all USB cables from the power supply unit (any connections to a PC, fixation lamp and
wide field illumination).
3) Insert the prepared USB drive into the lower USB-A port labelled with “USB 2A” at the power
supply.
4) Switch on the device at the main power switch.
The update starts automatically. After a brief moment, the successful completion of the first
module update is confirmed by two beeps. The data of all modules connected to the slit lamp
are now transmitted successively. Conclusion of each module update is confirmed by two
beeps. Depending on the number of modules to be updated, this process can take up to 10
minutes. The end of the update is confirmed by five beeps.
5) Switch off the SL 800 at the power module unit after successful update.
6) Remove the USB flash drive.
7) Reconnect the removed USB cables to the corresponding USB sockets at the power module.
8) Switch the SL 800 on at the power module unit to continue working with the device.

2.3.6 Create Log-Files
Tools and aids:
Empty USB flash drive with FAT32 format
Procedure:
The SL 800 is able create a log file if required. It contains information on configuration, status of
individual modules or any errors that may have occurred.
1) Remove all USB cables from the power supply unit (any connections to a PC, fixation lamp and
wide field illumination).
2) Turn on SL 800 at the power supply unit.
3) Insert the prepared USB drive into the lower USB-A port labelled with “USB 2A” at the power
supply.
Writing of the SL 800 log file starts automatically. After a few seconds, the SL 800 confirms
completion of log file creation by three beeps.
4) Switch off the SL 800 at the power supply unit after the log life has been written successfully.
5) Remove the USB flash drive.
6) Reconnect the removed USB cables to the corresponding USB sockets at the power supply.
7) Switch the SL 800 on at the power supply unit to continue working with the device.
8) Check the log file for errors codes and plan further corrective maintenance measures, if
necessary.

2.3 Electrical Safety Test
Warning! Electrical hazard due to aging and wear
The electrical safety of the device may deteriorate due to aging and wear.
Please obtain information on the relevant regulations in your country regarding
electrical equipment inspections. These must be adhered to!
Unless legal requirements dictate otherwise, the operator is advised to carry out an
annual inspection in which the electrical safety is tested in accordance with IEC
62353. When performing the inspection, observe the following instructions.
Procedure
1) Perform a system check out,
see Chapter 2.1, to ensure the SL 800 is in
proper condition.
2) If there are doubts about the effectiveness
of the insulation (such as multiple triggering
of the fault circuit interrupter or other
protective devices in the physician's
practice, or traces of liquid on the device
which suggest the penetration of liquid),
measure the insulation resistance with a test
voltage of 500 V.
The measured value may not be less
than 7 MΩ.
3) After this, the device leakage current must
be measured. This is preferably done by
using the differential current method while
the device is in its operating state. Press the
measuring tip onto the measurement points
shown in Fig. 5.
The measured value may not exceed
0.1 mA.
4) Record the measured values.
