1.0 General
1.1 The 3M™4300 Stake-Mount Cabinet Series consists of three sizes of cabinets which can accommodate cross-
connect termination frames or simple splice storage. These cabinets are designed for stake-mounting
applications, however, they will also mount to a concrete pad using the attachment clips provided.

1.2 The following tools are needed for cabinet installation:
• 3/8" and 1/2" socket wrench sets
• Long handle shovel
• Sledgehammer
• Level
• Module/connector splicing tools
• Standard hand tools
1.3 Cabinet mounting methods and materials:
• Stake-mount directly into the ground
• Mount on a Pour-in-Place concrete pad using 1/2-13 UNC anchor inserts (4)
• Pea gravel for cabinet support and base sealing
• 3M™4411 Expandable Foam is an alternative for base sealing.

2.0 Description of Cabinets
2.1 The 3M™4300 Series of cabinets are fabricated with 14-gauge mill-galvanized steel. They are finished with a
baked on polyester powder paint. All external hardware is stainless steel.
2.2 Three cabinets are designed for cross-connect applications. The SS6N 600-pair frames are used with the
3M 4300 Series of cabinets.
* Capacity is based on the 3M™4320 Self-Strip System Cross-Connect Blocks.

4.0 3M™Tools and Test Equipment

5.0 Cabinet Mounting with Stakes
5.1 Carefully remove dirt from around cables and level ground for cabinet.

5.2 Fill excavation with pea gravel to within 4" of ground level.
5.3 Open cabinet door(s) and remove the SS6N loaded frame(s) and the lower frame support. Lift the base cover
upward and remove it from the cabinet.
5.4 Remove the four knock-out rectangular holes from the cabinet end walls. The stakes attach to the cabinet
using these holes.
Note: If a lift boom truck is used, reposition the two side lifting straps for attachment of a sling. Attach lift device
(sling) to cabinet lift straps.
5.5 Place cabinet over cables and center on excavation. Cables should be positioned near the back of the cabinet.
5.6 Determine if the stakes will be located on the inside or outside of the cabinet. Mark the stake location directly
in line with the two bolt holes in the end walls.
Position the stakes so that the smooth face is adjacent to the cabinet wall.

5.7 Move the cabinet away from the stakes and drive the stakes into the ground until the top ends are 5" above the
ground and level with each other. Protect the top of the stake with a wood block while driving.
5.8 Position the cabinet next to the stakes and attach with four 3/8" carriage bolts, flat washers, lock washers and
nuts. The head of the carriage bolt must be to the outside. Hold cabinet in a vertical position and tighten nuts.

5.9 Replace base cover and fill excavation with pea gravel level to ground surface.
5.10 Add additional pea gravel inside the cabinet up to the height of the base cover.
5.11 When the cabinet is in place, remove the lifting straps bolted to the sides of the cabinet. Replace the bolts with
the carriage-bolt heads to the outside of the cabinet.
5.12 Identify the cabinet (street address) on the street-side door according to your company procedure.
6.0 Cabinet Mounting with Pour-in-Place Pad
6.1 Prepare desired cabinet location ground surface and build pad form to the dimensions below.
6.2 Block off cable entry area to keep clear of concrete.
6.3 Pour concrete, making sure surface is level.
6.4 Place anchor inserts at specified locations.
Note: If a lift boom truck is used, reposition the two side lifting straps for attachment of a sling. Attach lift device
(sling) to cabinet lift straps.
6.5 Position cabinet onto slab and secure with 1/2" bolts and the attachment clips removed from the shipping
pallet.
6.6 Install base cover and fill cabinet with pea gravel up to the top of the base cover. 3M™4411 Expandable Foam
may also be used as an alternative moisture barrier in the bottom of the cabinet.
6.7 When the cabinet is in place, remove the lifting straps bolted to the sides of the cabinet. Replace the bolts with
the carriage-bolt heads to the outside of the cabinet.
6.8 Identify the cabinet (street address) on the street-side door according to your company procedure.

7.0 Cable Preparation and Bonding
7.1 It is desirable to have 14 feet of cable extending above ground/pad.
7.2 Remove cable sheath 18" above ground/pad.
7.3 Install shield bond connectors and attach bond straps to all cables according to your company's practice.
Attach all bond straps to the cabinet bond plate at left side. Identify cable bonds on log label on cabinet door.
7.4 If moisture seals are required for the cables, put them on at this time. Follow the instructions that come with
the moisture seals.
8.0 Cable Termination
8.1 Break feeder and distribution cables into 100-pair groups. Route the groups up to the tie bar and to the
appropriate frame location according to the frame count.
8.2 Install the bottom frame support (not required with 4306).
8.3 Install the left-hand-side frame into the cabinet, rest the frame on the pivots and attach the safety cable to the
frame, or support the frame in a horizontal position by laying on a splicer's box.

8.4 Mount the splice head alongside the frame so that the modules/connectors can be stored in one of the two
methods shown below.
8.5 Splice the frame stubs and cable groups together following your company's procedures.
Note: If you are using non-sealed 3M™MS2™ Modules, install 3M™4075 or 4077
Series Sealant Boxes.
Note: Carefully follow safety, health and environmental information on sealant
box label or Material Safety Data Sheet.
8.6 After the splicing is complete, bundle and store connections.
8.7 Repeat this procedure with the middle frame.
8.8 Use a splicer’s box or equivalent to support the right-hand frame to keep it off the ground and to prevent
damage.
8.9 Untie the frame stubs from the back of the frame and lay it on the metal side. Bring the stubs to the cabinet.
8.10 Mount the splice head in the cabinet so that the modules/connectors can be bundled and stored in the same
method as shown above.
8.11 Splice the frame stubs and cable groups together following your company's procedures.
8.12 After the splicing is complete, install this frame by resting this frame on the pivots and attach the safety cable
to the frame.
8.13 Bundle and store the connections as shown above.

9.0 Identify Cross-Connect Block Counts
9.1 Determine desired feeder/distribution layout. Recommended Feeder/Distribution layouts shown are for
1:2 ratio.
9.2 Remove protector tape from identification pads on the blocks in the cabinet.
9.3 Select proper sequence of labels (blue = distribution; green = feeder) and detach strip of 20 labels from sheet.
Carefully remove protective backing from strip.
9.4 Align number 1-6-11, etc. with identification pads on left and press into place. Align numbers 5-10-15, etc.
with right identification pads and press in place. Remove the outer liner as shown.
9.5 Fill in Binding Post Log on cabinet door.
