Safety and Standards
Please read and understand all safety information before operating this equipment.
Intended Use
The 3M™ SelfCheck™ System allows library patrons to check out and check
in library items on their own. The library items must have barcodes or RFID
tags attached that can be read by the scanner. The system performs check-
in and checkout procedures through communications with the automated
circulation system (ACS) interface module.
This product has not been tested or proven safe for uses other than
those stated above.
3M™ SelfCheck™ System Operations
The SelfCheck system performs the following tasks:
 Check-in and checkout (includes securing and unsecuring library items)
 Offline processing (when the automated circulation system (ACS) is not
operational)
 Receipt printing
Please review this guide before you begin using your SelfCheck system.
Automated Circulation System Provisions
Make certain that you have an automated circulation system server and a
license for each SelfCheck system, and that the server is properly installed
and configured prior to installation of the SelfCheck system.

This product contains laser devices. Do not allow
the scanner laser beam to reflect off a shiny,
mirror-like surface into anyone’s eyes. Observe
the labels on the unit.
Note: Barcode laser power up to 0.95 mW with an average power of 3.9 µW at 630 to 670 nm can be
emitted onto the book cradle

Assembled unit weighs 125 lbs. [56,8 kg]. Do
not attempt to lift assembled unit alone.
Never lift unit from the front. Lifting from the front
may cause the coil assembly to break and falling
parts may cause injury.
Caution
Danger of explosion if internal battery is incorrectly replaced.
Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended
by the manufacturer.
Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.

3M™ SelfCheck™ System Overview
Welcome to the 3MSelfCheckSystem!
Please take the time to read this guide to help you understand how your
SelfCheck system works. Keep it accessible when the system is in use. It will
serve as a reference guide when questions arise.
The SelfCheck system allows library patrons to check out books by
themselves. The system emulates the check-in and checkout procedures
performed by a librarian. In addition, the system can operate in off-line mode
when the library's automated circulation system is unavailable.
The system can be configured with a barcode and/or an RFID scanner that
identifies items being checked out of the library. It sends this information to
the library's circulation database. A desensitizer unit then desensitizes the
security strip placed in or on the item.
SelfCheck systems can read most barcode formats used by libraries
throughout the world. The SelfCheck system barcode scanner can read up to
seven different barcode formats. Codabar and Code 39 are the most
common formats used in libraries.
Online Help
The library staff and administration can configure how the SelfCheck system
works through a utility called the 3M™ SelfCheck™ System Manager. The
SelfCheck System Manager has online assistance that includes this
document. To read this document on-screen, click Help Topics on the
SelfCheck System Manager Help menu.

Color Monitor
A color monitor mounted on top of the SelfCheck system displays graphic
instructions, diagrams, and other information to guide the patron through the
operation of the SelfCheck system.
Barcode Scanner
Your SelfCheck system may use one of two types of scanners, depending on
the configuration of the SelfCheck system and the placement of barcodes on
your library items. A visible single-line scanner reads perpendicular
barcodes. The scan line should be visible whenever the system is on. An 8-
line raster scanner with an approximately 1-inch wide read area reads
parallel barcodes.
A status LED is mounted on top of the scanner. The LED is visible through
the observation hole in the scanner housing. When a good barcode reading
occurs, the LED changes from orange to green. When a bad barcode
reading occurs, the LED changes from orange to red.
Keypad
The keypad is primarily used to enter personal identification numbers (PINs).
PINs can only contain numeric data (0 through 9).
The keypad may also be used by the library staff to select certain
administrative or diagnostic functions. It has 12 keys styled after the standard
touch-tone telephone keypad, and includes a *and a #key.
Magnetic Card Reader
The magnetic card reader can read magnetic stripes that conform to the ABA
(American Banking Association) industry standard. It can read both numeric
and alphanumeric data from the magnetic stripe whether the data is recorded
on track 1, track 2, or track 3. Typically, alphanumeric data is recorded on
track 1, numeric data is recorded on track 2, and alphanumeric data is stored
on track 3. The track that should be selected for SelfCheck system operation
is the track that contains the patron ID.
VCU (Video Checkout Unit)
The VCU (video checkout unit) is designed to allow patrons to check in and
check out videotapes. To be checked in or checked out successfully,
videotapes must have a barcode applied near one end of the cassette. To be
properly sensitized or desensitized, a 3MDVM-1 Security Strip must be
applied to the spine of the cassette. For further information, refer to the DVM-1
Security Strip Installation Instructions.
As a videocassette is inserted into the slot, a sensor is blocked. A signal is
sent to the processor and the patron screen changes. If the videocassette is
fully inserted, a second sensor at the rear of the slot is blocked. If the tape is
not fully inserted, an error message appears on the screen. When the video-
cassette is properly in place, the barcode is directly under the barcode scan-
ner. The barcode number is sent to the processor and then to the circulation
system. When the video has been checked in or checked out on the circula-
tion system, the patron is instructed to remove the videocassette, which
sensitizes or desensitizes the security strip.

Receipt Printer
The receipt printer is mounted inside the SelfCheck system. It is a thermal
printer, and does not require toner or ribbons. Patrons can receive a receipt
upon checking library items in or out. You can control what is printed on
receipts through the SelfCheck System Manager.
Multiple Book Detector
The multiple book detector (MBD) prevents patrons from desensitizing more
than one item at a time at checkout. This helps to prevent patrons from
desensitizing materials without recording the transaction in the automated
circulation system (ACS).
If more than one sensitized strip is detected, the system displays an error
message and interrupts the checkout process.
Desensitizer
The desensitizer contains electronics housed beneath the book cradle of the
SelfCheck system that desensitize and resensitize security strips. When a
book is approved for checkout by the circulation system, the detection strip in
the book is desensitized. The MBD on the SelfCheck system is designed to
prevent patrons from checking out more than one item on the same item
barcode.
Network Interface Card
The network interface card allows you to connect your SelfCheck system to
the library's local area network (LAN). Your SelfCheck system can communi-
cate with the library's automated circulation system through the LAN.
RFID (Model 7210 only)
SelfCheck System Model 7210 can read 3M™ RFID tags by using radio
frequency identification (RFID). RFID tags are placed within the library
material. Each tag is encoded with item identification information by using the
3M™ Staff Workstation or 3M™ Conversion Station. The SelfCheck System
Model 7210 uses the information recorded in the RFID tag to check materials

Communication
The SelfCheck system communicates with the library’s circulation system
using the Standard Interface Protocol (SIP 1.0 or SIP 2.0).
The system communicates with patrons by reading the patrons' IDs and
leading them through the process of checking out materials. The SelfCheck
system displays instructions to help the patron solve problems. If this process
fails, the system instructs the patron to ask for help at the circulation desk.
Barcodes
Bad or Unreadable Barcodes
When the scanner tries to read a barcode that is not configured on the
system, or if the barcode is unreadable (damaged or incomplete), an error
screen appears and the patron is instructed to seek help at the front desk.
Barcode Formats
The SelfCheck system identifies library cards and library materials by reading
barcodes on the library cards and items. Several different barcode formats
have been developed. The SelfCheck system is pre-programmed to read the
following barcode formats:
 Codabar
 Code 39
 Plessey
 Telepen Numeric
 Code 128
 EAN-13
 UPC-A
If your library uses a barcode format that is not in the preceding list, your
administrator can use SelfCheck System Manager to replace one of the
standard barcode formats with the one your library uses.
Barcode Placement
Consistent barcode placement on library materials is necessary for easy and
consistent patron use. If the barcode placement on library materials varies,
the system must be set up in the center-scanning configuration.

Starting the 3M™ SelfCheck™ System
1 Turn on the power switch on the back of the SelfCheck system.
2 Log in using your designated password, if required. The system
automatically starts the SelfCheck system program.
Shutting down the 3M™ SelfCheck™ System
Press **316# on the keypad, wait for a screen message indicating it's safe
to turn the system off, and then turn off the power switch on the back of the
system.
To shut down the SelfCheck system when the SelfCheck program is not
running, click Shut Down in the Windows® Start menu.
Starting 3M™ SelfCheck™ System Manager
SelfCheck System Manager is the SelfCheck system’s management and
configuration utility. Access to its features is password-controlled. Only
administrators have complete access to its hardware and policy configuration
options.
SelfCheck System Manager requires the use of the keyboard and mouse.
To start SelfCheck System Manager
1 Choose one of the following options:
 If the keyboard is not plugged into the SelfCheck system, start at
step 2.
 If the keyboard is already plugged in and the SelfCheck system is
running, start at step 7.
2 Press **316# to shut down the SelfCheck system.
3 Turn off the power switch on the back of the SelfCheck system.
4 Open the right side panel on the SelfCheck system.
5 Plug the keyboard into the keyboard port.
6 Turn on the power switch on the back of the SelfCheck system.
 The SelfCheck system patron interface starts.
7 Press the Esc key on the keyboard anytime after the clock appears on
the SelfCheck system screen.
 The Windows® desktop appears.
8 Double-click the SelfCheck Manager icon on the Windows® desktop.
 SelfCheck System Manager starts.
9 Log in using your designated password, which is staff.

3M™ SelfCheck™ System Manager Procedures
This section contains common procedures for configuring and adjusting the
SelfCheck system using the SelfCheck System Manager.
Operating Modes
You can put the SelfCheck system into different modes of operation by using
the Mode menu.
To choose an operating mode
 On the Mode menu, click the mode you want to put the SelfCheck
system into.
 In all modes, press the Esc key to return to the SelfCheck System
Manager.
Mode menu
SelfCheck Mode
Click SelfCheck for normal patron operation.
Out of Service Mode
Click Out of Service to display the out-of-service graphic on the SelfCheck
system screen.
Demonstration Mode
Choose Demonstration to put the SelfCheck system into Demonstration
mode. This mode allows checkout of items for training or demonstration
purposes. While in the demonstration mode, the SelfCheck system uses an
internal database and does not communicate with any external system.
The demonstration database can be configured using the Demo Database
Manager, which is described in the appendix to the SelfCheck System Model
6210/7210 Administrator’s Guide.

Circulation Properties
SelfCheck Use
The SelfCheck system can be set to allow
the patron to choose check-in or checkout
operation (if licensed), or it can be set for
check-in or checkout operation only.
To set the SelfCheck system use
1 On the Configure menu, click Policy.
2 In the Policy Properties dialog box, click
the Circulation tab.
3 In the SelfCheck Use area, click the
option button for the desired use.
4 Click OK.

can be changed only by an administrator. Policy Properties Circulation tab
Fines and Fees
The fines and fees options enable patrons to immediately pay any fines and
fees by debiting their smart cards. To use this feature, the 3M™ Public
Access Management System must be installed at your site. All debits are
synchronized with the library’s circulation system. If the circulation system
does not accept the fee payment, the transaction is canceled and the
patron’s smart card is credited.
To set the fines and fees options
1 On the Configure menu, click Policy.
2 In the Policy Properties dialog box, click the Circulation tab.
3 In the Fines policy and Fee policy areas, select the desired options.
Fee Collection
Select to enable the collection of fees.
Fine Collection
Select to enable the collection of fines.
Allow Partial Payment
Select to allow partial payment of fines.
Fine Notification Amount
Type the minimum unpaid fine that will cause the system to ask if the patron
would like to pay the fine.
Maximum Fine Allowed
Type the maximum unpaid fine that will allow the patron to check out
materials. A patron whose accumulated fines exceed this amount will not be
allowed to check out library materials.

Display Properties
Display properties control the presentation of
information to the patron. Information can
include automated circulation system (ACS)
messages, fines, fees, item names and
barcodes, patron identification, and patron
record information.
To set the display properties
1 On the Configure menu, click Policy.
2 In the Policy Properties dialog box, click
the Display tab.
3 Select the check box for each item that
you want to be displayed to the patron.

Message Procedures
Most of the messages that are displayed to patrons can be customized. For
instructions on how to do this, see “Message Procedures” in the SelfCheck
System Model 6210/7210 Administrator’s Guide.

General Maintenance
Replacing the Printer Paper
When the printer paper runs out, use the following procedure to replace it
with a new roll of paper:
To order printer paper rolls, see "Obtaining Service and Supplies" on
page 19.
1 Shut down the SelfCheck system (see "Shutting down the 3M™
SelfCheck™ System" on page 12).
2 Open the right side panel of the SelfCheck system.
3 Slide the printer assembly out of the SelfCheck system chassis (1).
4 Locate the print head lever and move the lever from the Engaged
position to the Full Release position (2).
5 Lift the empty paper roll and roll pin out of the printer assembly (3).
6 Remove the paper roll from the roll pin (4).
7 Place a new paper roll on the roll pin (5).
8 Place the paper roll and roll pin on the printer assembly with the tag end
of the paper coming off the bottom of the paper roll (6).
9 Feed the leading end of the paper roll into the printer assembly. Be sure
the end of the paper roll is not ragged, or it will not feed properly (7).
10 Press the line feed button on the side of the printer assembly until the
paper feeds completely through the print head area of the printer (8).
11 Move the print head lever from the Full Release position to the Engaged
position (9).
12 Tear off any excess paper (10).
13 Slide the printer assembly back into the SelfCheck system chassis (11).
14 Close the side panel.
