Advantech warrants to you, the original purchaser, that each of its products will be free from
defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.
This warranty does not apply to any products which have been repaired or altered by persons
other than repair personnel authorized by Advantech, or which have been subject to misuse,
abuse, accident or improper installation. Advantech assumes no liability under the terms of this
warranty as a consequence of such events.
Because of Advantech’s high quality-control standards and rigorous testing, most of our
customers never need to use our repair service. If an Advantech product is defective, it will be
repaired or replaced at no charge during the warranty period. For out-of-warranty repairs, you will
be billed according to the cost of replacement materials, service time and freight. Please consult
your dealer for more details.
If you think you have a defective product, follow these steps:
1. Collect all the information about the problem encountered. (For example, CPU speed,
Advantech products used, other hardware and software used, etc.) Note anything abnormal and
list any onscreen messages you get when the problem occurs.

2. Call your dealer and describe the problem. Please have your manual, product, and any helpful
information readily available.
3. If your product is diagnosed as defective, obtain an RMA (return merchandize authorization)
number from your dealer. This allows us to process your return more quickly.
4. Carefully pack the defective product, a fully-completed Repair and Replacement Order Card
and a photocopy proof of purchase date (such as your sales receipt) in a shippable container. A
product returned without proof of the purchase date is not eligible for warranty service.
5. Write the RMA number visibly on the outside of the package and ship it prepaid to your dealer.
CE
This product has passed the pretest of CE test for environmental specifications when shielded
cables are used for external wiring. We recommend the use of shielded cables. This kind of cable
is available from Advantech. Please contact your local supplier for ordering information.

Safety Precaution - Static Electricity
Follow these simple precautions to protect yourself from harm and the products from damage.
1. To avoid electrical shock, always disconnect the power from your PC chassis before you work
on it. Don’t touch any components on the CPU card or other cards while the PC is on.
2. Disconnect power before making any configuration changes. The sudden rush of power as you
connect a jumper or install a card may damage sensitive electronic components.

Introduction
Description
EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W are fast and cost-effective 802.11b wireless networking-enabled
board modules. EDG-4100W provides one RS-232 port, while EDG-4110W provides one
RS-422/485 port. The modules enable nearly any device to communicate with 802.11b wireless
LAN and shared networks, and they allow those devices to be remotely monitored, managed, and
controlled. Functionally transparent and efficient, EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W provide a
complete software and hardware solution. The modules effectively eliminate the need for OEMs
and systems integrators to invest engineering resources to develop 802.11b wireless Ethernet
networking solutions, and reduce the time it takes to bring intelligent devices to market. Thus, the
modules are especially suitable to provide remote management and data accessibility to
thousands of devices that cannot connect to the network, such as factory machinery, security
systems, heating and ventilation systems, lighting control systems and Point-of-Sale devices.
EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W are 54 x 59mm wireless networking-enabled boards, so they can
easily fit into almost any device. A wireless antenna is provided to connect to the 802.11b wireless
LAN, and pin headers are provided to connect DI/O, power, and RS-232/422/485 into your boards.
There are also 8 DI/O slots, which allow additional flexibility.EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W
replace expensive dedicated PC’s and lengthy serial cables with fast, reliable networking
technology.
EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W also provide development kits to develop your own applications.
Using these kits, you could easily develop serial and/or DI/O applications on EDG-4100WDK.
EDG-4100WDK also comes with: a debug LED, driver CD, RS-232 loop back test connector,
RS-422 loop back test connector, a standard male DB9 connector, 8 channel DI/O slots on the
terminal block, a null modem cable, and a 100~240 VAC to 5 VDC power supply.

Flexible Design and Easy-to-Manage S/W Support
EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W have been designed to be very flexible and easy-to-use to assist
OEM/ODM customers. EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W can easily fit to almost any serial device
available. EDG-4100 provides pin headers to connect the Wireless LAN, DI/O, power, and
RS-232/422/485 onto the customer’s own boards. EDG-4100W/4110W applies the same
configuration and COM port mapping utility as ADAM-4571W. When EDG-4100W/4110W, with
the EDG-4100WDK powered on, the utility will automatically detect the module as ADAM-4571W.
DI/O Function
Different from the ADAM-4571W, EDG-4100W and EDG-4110W also provide DI/O functions. Use
the UDP (port: 1024) command to control DI/O, which are divided into 2 categories. You also could
refer to the DI/O sample which is developed using Visual Basic®.
•Set DO status command:
Set the EDG-4100W/EDG-4110W’s DO status command. The command format is: #0100FF. FF
is hexadecimal, and the first F digit means to set the DO status, the second F digit is redundant but
must be sent to fulfill the protocol limit. For example, send command as: #01005F, binary of 5 is
0101 which means to set DO0 and DO2 to low, DO1 and DO3 to high.
•Read DI/O status command:
If the command: $016 is sent to the EDG-4100W/EDG-4110W, you will get the DI/O status
response: “!FF”. The “!” digit is the format character and FF is hexadecimal. The first F means D0
status, the second F means DI. For example: “!5A”, means the binary of 5 is 0101, which means
DO0 and DO2 are low, and DO1 and DO3 are high. The binary of A is 1010, which means DI0 and
DI2 are high, and DI1 and DI3 are low.

Troubleshooting
Configuration Utility can not find EDG-4100W/4110W
This chapter explains how to solve some of the most common problems you could encounter while
using EDG-4100W/EDG-4110W. If you are still having problems after reading this chapter, contact
your dealer, or e-mail Advantech support for help.
1. Check the WORK LED. If it is off, make sure the EDG device power cable is plugged in, and
make sure the input voltage is set to +5V DC
2. Check the WLAN LED. If it is off, check to see if the wireless network connection is OK.
3. Check to see if the EDG-4100W/ EDG-4110W and the host are on the same LAN. Your host
and the EDG-4100W/ EDG-4110W should be set on the same mode, channel, SSID, and network
domain.
4. Check to see if the wireless AP’s signal is too weak, and if there are too many wireless AP’s in
your area.
5. Check to see if your wireless network needs an encryption key, and if so, set the encryption.
6. Refer pg.10 and pg.11 of the ADAM-4571W User Guide, under the section, “Diagnostic mode to
search EDG-4100W and EDG-4100W”, and try to set your wireless environment the same as the
diagnostic setting of EDG-4100W/ EDG-4100W.
