1. GENERAL INFORMATION
COMPLIANCE
The Houghton Electric Bed has been tested by SGS and is fully compliant with the following international
standards;
IEC 60601-1 : 2005 + A1 : 2012
EN 60601-1 : 2006 + A1 : 2013
IEC 60601-2-52 : 2009 + A1 : 2015
IEC 60601-1-2 : 2014

It is also CE marked and is FDA and RoHS compliant.
The Houghton hospital bed is an electronically actuated acute care bed which is appropriate for adult
patient care allowing, if required, the patient to adjust their own position in the bed. Alternatively the bed
position can be locked.
The bed is classed as mobile equipment and can be tted with side rails, IV pole and lifting pole. The
height and various angles of the bed can be changed by a hand control which has a battery back up
system. The bed can be powered by mains supply or secondary battery power DC 24V.
Safe working load is 235kg and maximum patient weight 200kg.

3. ASSEMBLY OF BED

A. Installing the bed frame junction block
Take out M10x20 bolt from the 50x30 rectangular tube of bed head frame, pull up the bed frame junction
block, matching the rst bolt hole and fasten using M10x20 with ø10 spring washer and ø10 at washer.
Do not over tighten the bolt, make sure the bed frame junction block can still move (see g. 2)

B. Unpack the bed.
C. Pull out 4 link pins from bed frame (see g. 3) and take out the bed head frame and bed foot frame.
D. Pull out 4 link pins from packing connector (see g. 4)
E. Holding the bed board, lift up the packing connector and take it off (see g. 5)

Insert the 50x30 rectangular tube of bed foot frame into the bed head frame junction block, tighten with
screw (see g. 6)

4. PARTS AND ACCESSORIES
The bed accessories consist of side rails, mattress, IV pole & lifting pole.
The maximum mass for the accessories are below;
Side rails 12.5kg/set (safe working load 30kg)
IV pole 0.6kg/pc (safe working load 5kg)
Lifting pole 2.8kg/pc (safe working load 75kg)

A. At ideal position of the bed frame, insert the side rail base into 50x30 rectangular tube (see g. 12) Put
on with bolt, reinforce sleeve and ø8 at washer then tighten the nut. (see g 12A and 12B)

B. Repeat step A to install the other side rail
C. Pull out the handle button and pull down the side rail to lower it (see g. 13). To raise the side rail, pull
it up until a ‘click’ is heard to make the side rail lock at that position (see g. 13).
D. Please consider entrapment issues when using bed rails - see ‘Safe Use of Bed Rails’ published by
MHRA December 2013.
5. FUNCTIONS
A. The back deck, knee deck, foot deck and bed height can be adjusted upward, downward and tilted.
The movement is controlled by independent motors.
Back-rest tilting: 0º~73º
Knee-rest tilting: 0º~37º
Height adjustment: 360~760mm
Trendelenburg & Reverse Trendelenburg: 0º~12º
B. The emergency controller can stop the bed movement in an emergency.
C. The bed has a backup battery whereby in the event of a power cut or any emergency situation, the
bed can be returned to at position in 30 seconds by pressing the CPR button on the hand control.
D. The bed has collapsible side rails to facilitate transportation, cleaning and nursing.
E. Four castors with brake facilitate the bed movement. Engaging the brake feature will prevent the bed
from moving.
F. The bed operation can be locked by a key attached to the hand controller.
E. IV Pole
It comes with 2 IV pole sockets at two corners of the bed head. Insert the IV pole into the socket, loosen
the screw to raise or lower the IV pole to your ideal position, then tighten it. The height can be adjusted
more than 600mm from the hook to bed surface. When not used, remove the IV pole from the socket
and put it at the head end or foot end of the bed.
F. There are two lifting pole sockets at two corners of the bed head. Insert the lifting pole into the socket
to help the patient get up from the bed.

6. OPERATION
All functions can be achieved by hand control (g. 14)
A. Press and hold the Back Up or Down button to adjust the back deck from 0º~73º. Keep pressing until
you reach your ideal position.
B. Press and hold the Knee Up or Down button to adjust the knee deck from 0º~37º. Keep pressing until
you reach your ideal position.
C. Press and hold the Bed Up or Down button to adjust the bed hi-lo from 360mm to 760mm. Keep
pressing until you reach your ideal position.

• Press and hold the Trendelenburg button to reach your ideal tilting angle
• Press and hold the Reverse Trendelenburg button to reach your ideal tilting angle
• Return to at position: Press the Bed Up button to the at position.
E. CPR Button
Returns the bed to a at position in 30 seconds in case of a power cut or an emergency situation.
F. Operation for emergency controller.
Press the emergency controller in any emergency case of faulty operation. The bed will be power off
and stop working immediately; Rotate the controller in the arrow direction to connect to the power supply
again.
G. Operation for the locking device of hand control.
To prevent the patient from activating the bed movement, the medical personnel can use the locking
device of the hand control. Insert the key to activate the bed movement, and remove the key to lock the
bed (see g.15).

H. Castors
Push the bed to the destination, and step down on the brake pedal of the universal castor to prevent
the bed movement. The castors are returned to move in any direction when the brake pedal is in level
position.
I. Power Cord Suspension Device
The bed is equipped with a power cord suspension device at the head end of the bed. To prevent
damage to AC power cords when the bed is moving or not in use, the power cord must be hung on the
device, kept away from the ground and any working components or mechanisms.
7. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
• Not suitable for automatic washing systems or jet stream
The bed can be washed using neutral soapy water, or cleaner. After thoroughly cleaned and dried, the
shaft parts should be lubricated with grease.
DISINFECTION PROCESS
Under normal circumstances, the user only needs to clean the bed surface daily. Most of the micro-
organisms can be removed by wiping the bed surface once a day with a clean wet cloth. When the
bed surface is contaminated by pathogens, it must be strictly sterilized by wiping with 250mg/l-500mg/l
chlorine disinfectant.

MATTRESSES
9. INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
Perform periodical inspection and maintenance to ensure the bed keeps operating in a safe condition.
Quarterly checks and maintenance are recommended. Once a problem has occured, consult the
suppliers maintenance personnel for inspection and repairs.
A. Check electrical components
Check to ensure the emergency controller and hand control work properly.
Check the electrical power cords for damage, cracks and entanglement.
Insert the plugs and verify they are rmly held.
Routinely check the electrical power cords for proper grounding.
B. Check Construction
Check the welding parts.
Check to ensure the screws connect rmly.
Check the mechanical parts for proper and exible operation, including the hinge connection and hi-
lo movement of the bed decks, operation of the side rails, castors and hi-lo system. Lubricate these
mechanical parts with HJ-(20-30) oil.
Check the performance of the lockout controls.
Check to ensure the normal operation of the motors.
C.Rechargeable Battery
It is equipped with OT1.3-12 rechargeable battery with two to four years life span. The rechargeable
battery is lead-acid, it should be placed in a cool and dry place when not in use. Recharge the battery
every month. Replace the scrapped battery as per the following instruction:
Remove the screw form the control box housing, and take out the charging wire connected to the control
box. Replace the original battery with the new one, tighten the housing screw.
D. Product Life
Under normal use, the back section, knee section and the whole bed cab be adjusted up and down more
than 10,000 times with the maximum load.
The equipment and accessories are to be disposed of according to local regulations after their service
lives. Alternatively, they can be returned to the dealer or the supplier for recycling or proper disposal.
The height of the mattress used is at least 20mm higher than any
construction part (e.g., medical bed frame, side structure or the
lowered side rails of the bed at the area of the mattress support
platform) intended for the ingress/egress of the bed.

10. SAFETY

Bed use only for movement within the patient room
for cleaning or patient access.
• The product should be stored in clean room that is: with a temprature of -10ºC~40ºC, at a relative
humidity below 80%, free from corrosive gas and well ventilated.
• Keep away from sun and rain during delivery.
• Requirements for safe operation: temperature to be 5ºC~40ºC, relative humidity ≤80%, atmospheric
pressure range to be 86kPa~106kPa, power supply a.c220V±22V, 50±1Hz.
• The bed should be kept away from equipment or devices that generate strong electromagnetic or other
interference. Electronic equipment may be inuenced by Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Caution
should be exercised with regard to the use of portable communications equipment in the area around
such equipment. If RFI causes erratic behaviour, unplug the electric bed immediately. Leave unplugged
while transmission is in progress.
• When the bed is not in use or is moving, put the power cords onto the suspension device to keep it
away from the ground and any working components or mechanisms. Do not run over leads or cables.
• If there is doubt about external protective wire then the equipment must be checked.
• Never use water or cleaner to clean the electrical components that would cause damage and leakage.
• After product life span, all original electrical components shall be recalled. The recall should be
performed by qualied company.
• The bed should be left in its lowest position when the patient is unattended in order to reduce risk of
injury due to falls.
• If a patient, for example, loses sense of direction due to drugs or clinical conditions, he may be stuck
when unattended. To avoid injury the bed should always be placed in at position (unless the medical
personnel has other requirement for special use.
• To avoid injury the bed should not be operated until all persons are clear of any working mechanisms.
• Connecting the bed to the multiple socket outlet effectively leads to creating an ME system and the
result can be a reduced level of safety.
• Incompatible side rails and mattresses can cause an entrapment hazard.
• The product has been tested through strict inspection in the factory. The user should pay attention to
the assembly of components during use and maintenance. The adjustment of the motor must be carried
out by authorized technical pesonnel.
• The bed shall only be used with certain hoists, becuase of the limited space underneath the bed.
• The bed is limited to a specic group of patients.
• WARNING: To avoid the risk of electric shock, this equipment must only be connected to a supply
mains with protective earth.
• When routing cables from other equipment in or on the bed precautions should be taken to avoid
squeezing those cables between parts of the bed.
